After taking a hit in the finalquarter of FY20 due to theCovid-19,NMDC,thecountry’slargest ironoreminer, is stick-ing to last year’s productiontargetof32milliontonnes (mt)this financial year.

“We hope to achieve whatwedid in FY20 and that itselfwill be a great positive for thecompany. April was a com-plete wash out for us as near-ly 50 per cent of productiondeclined. But inMay, ore pro-duction picked up and wehave done 4.1 mt of produc-tion and sales,” Amitava

Mukherjee, director offinance at NMDC, toldBusiness Standard.

State-owned NMDC wasunable tomeet its productiontarget last year. The companyproduced 31.49 mt and sold31.51 mt of iron ore in FY20,againstproductionof32.36mtand sales of 32.36mt in FY19.

“WewouldhavebeatentheFY19target inFY20hadCovid-19 not been there. This fiscal,even if there is production orsales slippage in the firstquar-ter, we should be able to coverit up over the next ninemonths,” addedMukherjee.

The firm’s Q4FY20 resultsshowed earnings before inter-

est, taxes, depreciation, andamortisation (Ebitda) declin-ingby23percentonayear-on-year basis on lower volumesand weaker-than-expectedrealisation.

With regard to realisationsin FY21, where outlook fordomestic steel demand looksbleak amidst slow economicgrowth, NMDC remainedsilent about ore price move-ment during the fiscal.

“We cannot speculateabout ore pricing during theyear. We will have to take acall as and when, so I ratherrefrain from speaking onpricing at this juncture,”said Mukherjee.

Offshore currency tradingstarts trickling in onshoreANUPROYMumbai, 20 June

T he Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s)efforts to bring offshore derivativetrading onshore is slowly show-

ing results, at least when it comes toexchange-tradedderivativeproducts.

But the non-deliverable futures(NDF) segment, themain concern ofthe regulator, is an over-the-counter(OTC) instrument, where the data is pri-vateandonlyavailablewithbanks,ClearingCorporationof Indiaand theRBI.

The offshore volume — on which thecentral bank has almost no control — inNDF OTC is more than the onshore vol-ume.Toallowsomeofthetradestohappenonshore, the central bank, from June 1,allowedlocalbankswithforeignpresencetoparticipate in NDF trading from any loca-tion.TheoffshorevolumeintherupeeNDFsegmentisestimatedtobeover$40billion.

The exchange-traded segment, donemainly inDubai andSingapore, is equallyimportant.ThevolumeisnowhereclosetotheOTCsegment,butunliketheNDFseg-ment, the deals are transparent and datapublicly available.

India INX, which launched itsexchange-traded rupee dollar futures andoptions trading at the GIFT IFSC in Maythis year, saw trading volume reaching asmuch as 15 per cent of total currencyturnover in offshore exchanges. The aver-agesharewas9percentinJune,withaver-age daily turnover of $237 million, IndiaINX’s MD and CEO V Balasubramaniamsaid.“Wetargettoreachatleast25percentoftheoffshorecurrencymarketsharebytheendof thisyear,”he said.

Theexchangecontrolsabout90percentof thecurrencymarketsat theIFSC,whichis based inAhmedabad.Anotherplayer in

the samesegmentatGIFT isNSEIFSC.Atpresent,participantsare IFSCbrokers

andtheir foreignclients, suchasNRIs, eligi-bleforeigninvestorsandFPIs.“Banksareget-tingon-boardedandweexpectvolumestogoupsignificantly,”saidBalasubramaniam.

India INX is also bringing part of theexternal commercial loans (ECB) to India.

According to Balasubramaniam, theexchangehasalreadyestablishedmedium-termnote (MTN) programmesworthmorethan$48billionandbondslistingsofover$21billion.Earlier,thesebondsusedtogetlisted

attheLSEandSingaporeExchange.“Even during the Covid-19 peri-

od,bondsworth$600millionwerelisted on the Global SecuritiesMarket (GSM) platform of IndiaINX. These were SBI Green Bonds

worth $100 million and REC bondsworth$500million. InFebruary thisyear,we had ~850-crore masala bonds listedby theAsianDevelopmentBank,which isa supranational company,” he said.

In the India INXexchange, bondshavebeen listedby firms like IRFC, PFC, EXIM,Adani Group, ONGC, etc. This is partlybecause thewithholding taxonbonds list-edinIFSCis4percent,against5percentonthoselistedononshoreexchanges,accord-ingtothelatestamendmentinFinanceBill.

Now the exchange hopes that it canbecomeamajorcentreinNDFaswell,as13bankshavestartedtheiroperationsinIFSCtotradeinNDF.However,theCovid-19pan-demichasactedasa speedbreaker.

“India INX is operational for 22 hourswhereastheotherexchangeinGIFTIFSCisoperationalfor15hoursand30min.DGCXis operational for nearly 17 hours and SGXaround21hours,” said theCEO.

The exchange wants to use this con-tinuous trading hours in currency as itsselling point, he said.

The exchange is also working to startGlobal Depository Receipt services andexpects Indian companies to raise equityfrom IFSC. Already, Index 50 contract istraded on India INX and the volume isalready about half of SGX-Nifty. Similarly,goldvolumesonIndiaINXarehigherthanDGCXGoldvolumes,he said.
