IOT – Gartners Prediction
• The predictions from Gartner is 26 billion IoT units deployed by 2020
• Product and service suppliers positioned to rake in revenue of more than $300 billion.
IOT is a Disruptive Technology
IOT – Challenges
• IoT is not an out of box solution which can be deployed as a plug and play solution.
• Technical and Procedural challenges have to be surmounted before IOT deployment.
• IOT calls for expertise from business and technology teams.
• It is a medley of networks, networking devices, power supplies especially batteries, security, access and data processing.
IOT – Challenges
• Generation of large volumes of raw data poses its own challenges for storing and analytics.
• The challenge is also transforming the organization as a data-driver organization.
• Ownership of Big Data and focus on getting the analytics right.
• Basic data analytical skills will not suffice – we will need people who know analytics and understand what this new data can do for their business.
IOT in Agriculture
• Agriculture - loT-related technologies are used to monitor crops in real time
• Benefits – improved yield – Better quality– Conserve pesticides, fertilizers and water.
• Utility companies – IOT powered smart meters to monitor energy, gas, and water consumption.
• Municipalities – Launch of smart cities to ease traffic congestion, improve waste management, and control street lights
IOT in Utilities
• Utility companies – IOT powered smart meters to monitor energy, gas, and water consumption.
• Benefits
– Better Monitoring
– Improved Revenue Realization
– Conservation of Natural Resources
IOT in Municipalities
• Municipalities – Launch of smart cities
• Benefits
– Ease traffic congestion
– Improve waste management
– Control street lights
– Quality of life for citizens
– Monitor Mobile Cell Tower Radiation
– Air & Noise Pollution
IOT in Law Enforcement
• Smart firearms and accessories• Real time gun monitoring • Wearable (Google Glasses)• Motorola’s Robocop-esque HC1 Headset
Computer allows noise free communication and full vision of the area around the user, responds to voice commands.
• Body-worn cameras which can send video directly to a cloud database where it can’t be altered is gaining momentum
IOT in Health Care
• Health Care Sector - Organizations are connecting their medical devices into a network to monitor their operation of medication management; anaesthesia workstations in operating rooms, to dispensation of medications at nursing stations and inventory management.
• Benefits – Improved efficiency– Lower personnel costs– Seamless integration of prescription to patient for drug
delivery and monitoring – Cost Savings in Drugs

Beacons

Beacons • Beacons are low-cost, low-powered transmitters equipped with
Bluetooth Low Energy or BLE (also called Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth Smart) that can be used to deliver proximity-based, context-aware messages.
• Ideal for detecting smartphones indoors, where GPS isn’t always effective, and sending alerts and data to apps on those devices. Also while GPS operates at a macro range, beacons work at micro range, giving brands an opportunity to interact with customers not only at a store level but also target narrowly at an aisle or a fixture level.
• Range in which beacons function in the interim of NFC (too narrow) and GPS (too broad) ranges, and that is what makes it more effective than the other two.
• Beacons rely on the two-way communication (that the BLE technology allows) between an app and a strategically placed beacon. The technology gives brands and businesses an opportunity to build innovative proximity-aware apps for any Bluetooth Low Energy-capable mobile device.
Beacons • It’s the first proximity technology (wmobile platforms) and are
inexpensive, have a battery life of 2 years and being low-energy, they don’t even eat into a user’s phone battery.
• .The seeds for this revolutionary technological advancement were sown last year, when Apple introduced iBeacon during the launch of iOS7 at the World Wide Developer Conference.
• Apple’s iBeacon is built into all its devices manufactured since 2013. Around 200 million iOS devices are thus, forever enabled to serve as transmitters and receivers.
Barriers to Beacons Adoption
• The only barrier to wide adoption of beacon technology is
– several layers of security
– customers have to turn on Bluetooth,
– accept location services on the relevant app
– and opt-in to receive in-store or indoor
