CHAPTER 2

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

Dhulikhel Hospital has received a grant from Government of Nepal for the implementation of

Dhulikhel Hospital Solar Power Project in the Hospital. The Project is an initiative of the

Hospital towards clean energy. Under the supervision of Mr. Dipesh Shrestha I was involved in

this project as an intern. Dhulikhel Hospital Solar Power Project has been divided into two

different parts. Firstly solar power as main and backup supply for two different blocks of the

hospital and secondly outdoor lighting or street lighting powered by solar energy covering the

whole hospital premises.

During my internship, I was mainly involved in observation of the activities carried out at the

project site i.e. Dhulikhel Hospital. However my activities can be listed as follows:

Detail analysis of system sizing of Dhulikhel Hospital solar power installation.

Supervise the delivery of solar panels and batteries at the project site.

Detail analysis of street lighting system at Dhulikhel Hospital premises.

Observation of installation of poles, solar panels, battery, charge controller and LED light

for street lighting purpose.

Determining the efficiency of LED light and its driver from a local company.

Observation and supervision of installation of structure for holding the solar panels at the

main building.

2.1 System sizing for solar power as main and backup supply

There are two sites for solar power installation. Site 1 is the Dental Building and Skill Lab

whereas site two is the main building comprising different wards.

Dental Building and Skill Lab has been chosen because around 90% of its load is daytime load

which reduces the usage of battery in the system until the system is grid tied in near future. Other

reason is the availability of vacant rooftop with minimum obstacle for sunlight.

As per the energy audit performed the load profile is summarized below:

considering the sensitivity of artificial light requirements at the wards.

As per the energy audit performed the load profile is summarized below:

This system is completely powered by solar energy with no other source of energy. The system

is autonomous .For places where placement of solar panels is difficult centralizes system will be

used.

2.3 Calculation of efficiency of LED light and its driver

During my internship I was involved in determining the efficiency of LED light and its driver

from a local company. Samples contained LED light of wattage 3W, 5W, 7W and 9W.Followingtable shows the calculation of performance efficiency of LED driver for different lights.

2.4 Limitations and Problems encountered

During my internship the project was at its initial stage. Initially activities at the project

site were very less. Project picked up its pace during middle stage of my internship time

frame. So main limitation was the duration of my internship.

There were few problems that crept up during my internship. Main problem was lack of

communication between personnel involved in project at management level. The delivery

of solar panels and batteries were not at the specified time. The structure made as a model

was faulty. It did not include the equal level of the base which emerged as big problem

later on.

CHAPTER 3

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Solar Photovoltaic System has emerged with great potential in the field of renewable energy. Its

advantages like pollution free, sustainability have surpassed its shortcomings of being expensive

at installation phase. Dhulikhel Hospital’s initiative towards renewable energy is exemplary and

praiseworthy. As for internship is concerned being able to be a part of this project provided

exposure towards outer world. I was able to learn management skills along with techniques of

installing solar photovoltaic system. I got to know different standards followed in designing

street lighting system Time spent at this project was the most productive and exhilarating

experience of my learning life.

The internship was successful with the coordination of supervisor of project and the project

manager. These types of project should be held in institutions, public places, hospitals, school,

universities and priority streets. Clean energy helps the environment and society to be clean,

healthy and standard.

Credit goes to Kathmandu University for providing the opportunity for students to go for

internship. However the internship period should be determined for the convenience of all the

parties. It should be beneficial to all i.e. the organization, the university and students. In this

context the concerned authority should focus on extending the time frame of internship so that it

would add extra dimension. Last but not the least LS Solar Asia Pvt.Ltd has played a major role

in making this world place a better place to live. It has done a commendable job in the field of

renewable energy and hope it will continue its work in near future.
