2012- 2013 Lower School Program Guide 31 MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY In the Lower School, students are introduced to devel- opmentally appropriate uses of technology, including keyboarding, word processing, electronic presenta- tions, information literacy, and multimedia projects. Gaining an understanding of the uses of technology in society is the motivation of educational technology for Grades 1-5. Students are introduced to the concept of Internet safety, multimedia, and research, as well as simple graphic design and word processing skills. These key technology skills are integrated into class- room projects throughout the year. As students move through the Lower School, more emphasis is placed on an increased understanding and social awareness of the uses of technology in daily life. More attention is paid to Internet research and ethics, and integrated projects are investigated for a longer duration. Group work and exploration are encouraged through- out the Technology Program. Individualized attention is given to allow each student the ability to gain an understanding of the applications of technology in his/her life. Grade 3 In Grade 3 Media and Technology is an integrated part of the classroom curriculum. Lessons are taught using a wireless laptop cart, allowing work to become project-oriented. Students are introduced to develop- mentally appropriate uses of technology, including multimedia design, podcasting, and information literacy. Throughout the year, students work in collaborative groups on episodes of King Kast – King’s LS Podcast. Throughout the King Kast, students are introduced to new ways of communicating and learning, as well as learning valuable 21st century skills. In the third trimester, students work in small groups to create a short video. During this unit the students are instructed on how to create a two-minute commercial from start to finish. Beginning with storyboarding, each group works together through all the different phases of production, ending with an original infomer- cial about simple machines! Grade 4 In Grade 4 Media and Technology is an integrated part of the classroom curriculum. Lessons are taught using a wireless laptop cart, allowing work to become project-oriented.
