    Health Is Wealth

On the cards in the RTI week activities was a health checkup camp organized by Tr treasurerRohit Madan under the aegis of Apollo hospitals. The camp seemed a success what with both circlersand Tablers lining up to take stock of their physical health after the rounds of Diwali party bingeing.Despite the camp being held early in the winter morning of Nov 14, the members turned upinconsiderable numbers to be assessed by the tea of health specialists.

Fellowship Beyond Borders From Africa, with Love:

Mid 2013, Chairman LRT 136, Vinamra Agarwal, had the opportunity to visit Lusaka, Zambia ona business trip. Being the true Tabler that he is, Tr Vinamra made sure he devoted some time to Tableactivity there as well. Here is his report on the meeting in Lusaka:

Recently I had to visit Lusaka, Zambia on a business trip. I took the opportunity to reach out toTablers in the country. I had already been in touch with Tr. Herbert Mwanza, Incoming Chairman ofLusaka Round Table 1 through the RTI International business group for some time - and prior toleaving, I got in touch with him and we decided to meet up when I reached Lusaka.

Post arriving in Lusaka, I was treated to the most unimaginable hospitality and reception. I learntthat there are a total of 18 tables in Round Table Zambia of which 4 are in Lusaka (the capital city). Most interestingly, they have a bar that is privately owned, but provides access only to Tablers andHTs. Some pics of the bar below:

Interestingly, I was told that you can go there on any day of the week and you will invariably findsome Tabler there...

I also had a chance to attend a business meet of Round Table 18 which was being organised in aclub nearby. Pics from the business meet and my exchanging pins with the Chairman, Tr. Jerry Sokobelow:

Area 8 Awards Submission : Tabling Year 2013-14

Interestingly, President Round Table Zambia, Tr. Fred Ng'oma is the Projects Convenor for RT 18and he was present at the meet as well. I also exchanged our pin with him, National Vice President Tr.Chalwe Mwale, Area 2 Chairman & Secretary RT 18 Tr. Sahani Chirwa.

  • 12

    Lucknow Round Table 136

During the business meet, I extended greetings from LRT 136, Area VIII and Round Table Indiaand also invited them to attend our Area AGM at Nainital and the National AGM at Goa. They havepromised that they will certainly try to make it for the event.

Post the meeting we all went to the Table Club where a lot of gossip, exchange of news and viewson Tabling resulted in some excellent fellowship activity...

I also exchanged pins with Tr. Herbert Mwanza, Incoming Chairman of Lusaka Round Table 1and his colleagues.

In addition to the wonderful fellowship, I also took back a lot of interesting takeaways from thisinteraction:

    1. Maybe it's because of the formal environment in Zambia, but business meets are done with anextremely high degree of formality. Everyone in the meeting was attired in suits/ formals. Themeeting was conducted with an extremely high degree of formality with the Chairman firmlycontrolling the discussions. While doing business meets in formal attire is perhaps really not inconsonance with our culture, I felt that it would be a good thing to have business meets with thesame or similar degree of seriousness.

  • 13

Area 8 Awards Submission : Tabling Year 2013-14

    2. Written reports from the various convenors are insisted upon prior to the meeting: When someoneis forced to write a report, even if it's one paragraph, he is forced to think about what he will writeand ensure that there are no loose statements/ commitments. I saw this being implemented inZambia with great effect...

    3. National board members (including the National President) were expected to take up importantoffices in their own office - and were not given a leeway in performing their responsibilitiestowards the table even in light of their holding an important office in the National Association.

    4. The Tablers are passionate about tabling which also reflects in wearing of pins during their non-Tabling time as well as very disciplined in terms of wearing pins during meetings.

    5. I was welcomed in the formal business meet by the entire Table standing up, waving their arms upin the air and singing an African chant together. When I asked them what it was afterwards, I wasinformed that this is a special chant that they all break into whenever something good happens. Itmarks the occurrence of a good event, infuses energy into the group and creates a welcomeenvironment. Definitely one of the things that we should look at taking up

    6. Post the formal agenda, the Chairman gave every person in the meeting - whether it was a Tabler,Guest or a Prospective some time to make comments - These comments were painstakinglyminuted by the Secretary and actionable items identified with timelines at that very moment bythe Chairman - which was duly recorded in the minutes for future reference.

    Young and raring to go

July 2013 also saw a Young Ambassadors ExchangeProgram (YAP) in Lucknow during their trip to India.Traditionally, Square Legs and 41ers send their childrenin groups to other countries for a fun - cum- educationaltrip where these children are hosted by their counterpart41ers, Square Legs and Tablers. This tour is called YAPTour, where YAP stands for 'Young AmbassadorsExchange Programme'.

In 2013, India hosted a North India YAP tour for 12children aged between 18 - 23 yrs, beginning from July14 when they landed in Delhi till Aug 11, the date oftheir departure from Kolkatahi and 11th August departurefrom Kolkata for 12 such children. The young ambassadors to Lucknow also got a tasteof the very Lakhnawi culture and history when they weretaken on a historic tour by the 41ers and LRT. Thechildren from Europe really appreciated Lucknow andmentioned it as a beautiful city that still retains its oldworld charm. They especially made a mention of theexquisite monuments that were built during the ancienttimes and were still preserved.

Sq Leg Rajesh Nigam and Cr. Kavita Nigam tookall the children for a great dinner and drinks party. Theywere also taken shopping, Avadhi Style to noted marketsof Lucknow like Hazratganj and Aminabad. The childrenwere introduced to Lakhnawi Chikan, jewellery andornaments. Beachside fun

It was as if the beaches of Goa had been transported to Lucknow or better still, the fun-filledsea-side ambience of Koh Samui. For that was precisely from where the 4 couples - LMF Tr Vinamraand Cr Stuti Agarwal, GLMF Tr Abhishek and Cr Priyanka Saraff, Tr Gokul Jain and Kanupriya andSq Leg Vivek Jaiswal & Hon Cr Luna Jaiswal - got the inspiration for the full moon party that becamethe theme of the social they organized jointly.

Dancing the night away!Held on March 15, the imminent festival

of colours, Holi, added to the fervor. Of course, the consistent run-up to the event a good weekin advance by the hosts, with regular posts ondress suggestions, etc, did have a lot to do withthe almost 100 per cent attendance. And theparty lived up to all it promised. Encouragingthe guests to do a jig was Lucknow's DJ Monion the console spinning popular tracks andremixes, and as if that were not enough thedance floor was actually a stretch of beachcomplete with cool and soft sand underfootwhich all but dragged us to dance barefoot. Crs Neha, Shalini, Ambika and Neha Garg were among theenthusiastic lot and seeing their example, many others too joined in the fun.

The child within usA welcome surprise at the venue was a giant slide. Yes, the same slippery slope one would associate

with a children's playground! On that night however, the slide was enough to bring out the child withinall of us as the guests pulled, pushed and shoved each other down with great abandon. There was notone among the crowd who did not have a go and there were several who were only too excited abouttaking more than one turn. Another big draw at the event was the tattoo corner and throughout theparty, the guests kept visiting the tattoo artistes for getting interesting tattoos painted on themselves.

Eat, drink and be merryIf there is a beachside do, glasses certainly don't do justice to the ambience. The hosts seemed to

have understood this pretty well and so, greeting all the newcomers to the party were little plasticbuckets of drinks!!

Not just that, the food impressed too. The thai and Mediterranean mixed spread, prepared by achef especially brought in from Kolkata for the do, appealed to the tastebuds

    Publicity

Summary:l LRT 136 generated good publicity during its AGM organized on 3rd August 2013, not least because

of its star performer Comedian Kunal Rao who travelled all the way from Mumbai to tickle ourfunny bones. The AGM was well attended not just by Tablers and Circlers, but also sponsors, supporters and guests who were extremely impressed to note the community service objectivesof Round Table India. We feel that this form of soft publicity is what is very essential towardsbuilding a brand for RTI.

l Extensive Publicity generated during Panache 2013: Panache 2013 was our biggest Fundraiserand Publicity event in the year. During this event extensive publicity was accorded to RTI, LLCand the FTE and Community Service Activities undertaken by RTI. During Panache, in the wordsof our visitors to Lucknow, it almost seemed as if the whole city has been painted Red. LRT136 also tried to publicize its other community service activities throughout the year, whichgained it critical appreciation from our community. Panache generated significant media coverageand excitement on all platforms, including print, radio and television. In addition to the event, many press reports also featured the unique nature of Panache 2013 as an event targeted especiallyat charity! Panache 2013 also featured a live feed from Panache venue, which was carried byRed FM in which the community service agenda of RTI was highlighted.

l One of the Key publicity initiatives taken during Panache was highlighting the branding of LRT136 and LLC 84 on all stall fascia names thereby reinforcing the image and visibility of theTables in the Area

l A self running presentation on Round Table India and our Community Service Initiatives wasalso played continuously during the event thereby generating tremendous visibility for RTI andits activities

Naini-tales!The organizers had termed the Area 8 AGM to be held at the Manu Maharani in Nainital as the

'perfect' opportunity for some networking, and in this they were bang on! For the tablers heading to thevenue really couldn't have asked for more - perfect weather that wasn't too hot or too cold, greatambience and a set of programmes that kept everyone occupied and entertained. The minute attentionto detail by the host Table from Bareilly went a long way in ensuring a smooth and fun-filled three daysin the Queen of Hills.

Even the beginning of the journey was aneventful one, what with the train set to take us theregetting delayed by a few hours. And so a bunch ofbleary-eyed Tablers and Circlers with somegrumpy twinklers in tow, got together at 3 am atLucknow station. But all the tiredness disappearedas soon as the group landed in the reinvigoratingenvirons of Nainital. Not that there was anymoment to lose, for the very same evening thatwe landed was slotted for the 'Informal Night' whenall the tables collected for the Area 8 AGM weremeant to put up the one skit they had prepared inaccordance with the rules set out by the organizers.

Indeed, preparation for the AGM'sinformal night had taken up most week nightsin the preceding days as the brave boys of LRT136 donned the greasepaint, fake beards andmuch more all in a bid to entertain andimpress. With a set of rules that made cross-dressing mandatory, one can well imaginewhat it took to convince vice chairpersonShyamal Gupta to take on the lead role! Butin the end he gamely complied, and the resultsaided in no mean measure by plenty of Dutch

courage, were stunning. Chairperson Vinamra Agarwal and Tr Abhishek Saraff as the funjabi andmallu grooms wooing Shyamal did a superb job, while Tr Ravi and Cr Aparna as the bride's siblingswere a laugh riot. The rest of the circlers and tablers did their bit as baraatis. Fun and games apart, ithad been a hectic two weeks in the runup to the skit preparation and we can only hope our massive'thank you' to Tablers Abhishek, Ravi and Shyamal and their long-suffering wives circlers Priyanka,Aparna and Ambica suffices for all that din and disturbance we created while practicing well into thenight at their homes. At the same time, the results probably wouldn't have been the same without theencouragement and support by Hon Tr Rajat Mathur and Cr Smita. In the end the efforts paid off forLRT 136 walked away with accolade, applause and of course the Award for the best skit at the Area 8AGM.

The next day was a packed one, whilethe men got busy in the day-long meeting toplan and propose for the next year, for thecirclers and twinklers it was a perfectopportunity to bond. While some took off withthe kids to take in the natural delights ofNainital, others indulged the shopper in them.

The evening of 23rd was a formal affairwith the tablers all dapper in black suits whilethe ladies lit up the grounds of Manu Maharaniin chic black or red dresses for Western andethnic. To say that LRT 136 stole the showwould be an understatement, for there was no category where our Table was not mentioned. Frombagging the award for an exemplary fundraiser, to Secretary Mayank Chandra getting the 41ers KanpurTrophy for Best New Floor Tabler, LRT 136 was indeed the star. We also bagged the following:

Certificate of MeritTr. Amit Gujral Trophy for PublicitySq. Leg Nikhil Tandon Trophy for FundraisingTr. Bhupinder Singh Chhatwal (Honey)

Crown for the outstanding services to RTIArea 8 for 2012-13: Rajat Mathur

Best Secretary, Certificate of Merit: TrShyamal Gupta

And so, the Area 8 AGM concludedon a high note for our table and one couldclearly make out the jubiliant mood withwhich the Tablers set out for Lucknow, looking forward to another great year.

Picture perfect endingIf the 2-day trip for the Area AGM to Nainital was fun-filled but hectic, the last day's detour to

Niglat, a picture perfect retreat owned by Akshay Thakur, on the way to Kathgodam from Nainitalproved to be a fitting end to the holiday - relaxing and rejuvenating.

The Tablers and circlers of LRT 136 hadthe day to kill before we caught our train backto Lucknow at night, and so, on the suggestionof Hon Tr Rajat Mathur we trooped down tothe quiet retreat. Everyone was curious abouthow did the owners manage to break even, placed as they were seemingly in the back ofbeyond, but one look at the well-laid gardens, the charming nooks and crannies withstrategically placed iron benches and the riverthat ran at the bottom of the estate, and everyonecould be heard making plans for the next tripalready!

Loud barks of the owners' dogs indicated we had reached even before we got the first glimpse ofthe estate down the winding pathway, and chilled glasses of nimbu-paani awaited us thirsty travelerson reaching the retreat. The twinklers seemed to have a field day and they explored the estate's manygardens with great fun. As the lunch, an authentic Italian spread Smita promised us, was still an houraway, we decided to explore the river bank and gamely trooped down the steep pathway and overrocks. But all that sweat and pain was totally worth it as we reached the bank and it was a mostenjoyable one hour we spent there. Crs Priyanka and Shalini were keen to indulge their adventuresomespirit as they clambered over dangerous looking rocks to explore the bank further while ChairpersonVinamra took some great shots of the people and the surroundings.

Back at the house, the lunch awaited us and it was every bit as awesome as Smita had promised. That entire climb and the refreshing air had sharpened our appetites and we dug in with gusto into thearomatic pizza, pasta, the awesome pumpkin soup and tender chicken, rounded off with a deliciouscake and coffee. Truly a feast fit for the kings.
