11.45 Induction Materials: Updates – At the last LR Forum participants did some practical work on new approaches to library/LRC inductions. In this short session participants will be encouraged to tell colleagues – what they did; what worked; what didn’t work; what they didn’t have time to do.

Federated Search – Some BasicsFederated Search – Some Basics

•Is a launching pad for users to help them identify databases best suited to the subjects they are searching•Fed Search has other names too – metasearch; parallel search; broadcast searching;•Allows users to search across multiple resources – subscription databases; library catalogues; web sites•Examples include:

• Google Scholar – produces a ‘results list’ from the search;• WorldCat – with its ‘Refine Search’ uses faceting to guide users in further

narrowing their search;•Other approaches:

• Vendors who offer a similar service for searching across their subscription databases – eg EBSCO; CSA; and ProQuest;

•Purpose built Fed Search products:• More common ones are – 360 Search by Serials Solutions (recently

acquired WebFeat) and MetaLib by ExLibris;• But many others use licences from these – eg EBSCO uses WebFeat

•Consider first what are the ‘must haves’ for your users•Survey of librarians familiar with Fed Search in Autumn 2007 generated top 5 desirable features:

• Limiting results by source, date, range, full text, or peer review;• Speed of results retrieval;• Appearance of the interface;• Sorting of results;• ‘de-duplication’ of results

•Some vendors offer both Fed Search and discovery tool;•Discovery tools are more full-featured and more expensive;•Vendors offering this dual approach include – Encore (from Innovative Features) and Primo (from ExLibris);•Dual tools are not really comparable point by point with single-purpose Fed Search engines•All of the current generation Fed Search products basically do the same thing but do it in different ways.

•Consider the needs of the library professional and the end user•Generally, the Fed Search products include an admin tool where library can customise it (eg connectors; branding);•Admin can sometimes be done by the vendor and not available to purchaser;•Many products allow you to create pre-defined subject categories – so library can group resources by subject;•In this case, the users can select the subjects and not have to search everything;•With admin tools, you need to know can you – make the tool appear like a ‘Googleised’ search instead of a raw database? Make the brand of the library and connections to other resources in your house style?•Open Source Solutions (OSS) – these do exist. Will your IT department be able to provide you with the support that you will need?•Examples of Fed Search OSS include:

• LibraryFind – Oregon State University Libraries;• dbWiz – Simon Fraser University;• Pazpar2 – Index Data;

•For OSS options the key items to analyse are the IT admin tasks involved.14/04/23
