Skiing has a culture and language all its own. Porter Fox, featureseditor at Powder Magazine and autho r of Deep: The Story of Ski-ing and the Future of Snow, shares some of his favorite lingo fromthe slopes. TERMS FOR TECHNIOUESBackcountry: Skiing in unchar-tered territory in search of fresh,untouched powder. Recom-mended only for expert skierswith specific equipment andknowledge ofthe area.
Big-mountain skiing: Expert-onlyskiing, which can be fast anddangerous. Usually done in thebackcountry.Brazilian: A technique in whichthe tips of the skis are waxed todo tricks.Freeskiing: The newest style ofskiing, free of "race courses, mo-guls and any kind of restrictions."Glades: Skiingbetrreen the treesin the forest.
Tkerkin merkin: A neur trickin which the skier does "two360-degree turns on a rail,"similar to snowboarding orskateboarding.
TERMS FOR FUNPoaching: The act ofduckingropes and sneaking past skipatrol or "breaking the rules" insearch of fresh snow.
Texas Gore-Tex: Someonewho wears jeans on the slopes.Definitely a skiing faux pas.
Touques and dogiers: Touquebeing the Canadian term forhat, this refers to "ski bums orhippies walking around in skihats walking your dog."
Yard sale: After a co[ision or fall,when "all ofyour gear flies offand it looks like a yard sale."
