Supper

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Parents , On Thursday n ight of Holy Week we wi l l beobserv ing the Lord ’ s Supper , remember ing theLast Supper of Chr i st with h i s d i sc ip les . Th i s i s aspec ia l read ing that you may do with yourfami l ies that teaches about that n ight withJesus and h i s d i sc ip les , why they gathered , andwhy we celebrate the Lord ’ s Supper . I f you wish ,you may use crackers and grape ju ice , althoughwe have inc luded a spec ia l easy rec ipe forPassover bread if you wish to try that . S imply gather together , read the scr ipt (youmay d iv ide the read ings or have parents read)and fol low the instruct ions . You may choose tol ight candles or have soft worsh ip mus ic p lay ingin the background . We have inc luded a fewhymns in th i s packet for you to s ing together aswel l . Afterward , we have some quest ions youmay ask one another about the exper ience .

The Last Supper and the Lord ’ s Supper Reader 1 : Not long before Jesus d ied , he cal led h i s d i sc ip lestogether to share the Passover meal . The Passovermeal was a holy meal that helped the peopleremember back to the t ime of Moses when God savedthe ch i ldren of I s rael and the Angel “passed over”every home with lamb’s blood on the door . In th i sway, God saved h i s people . Jesus would use th i s lastsupper with h i s fr iends , cal led the d i sc ip les , to letthem know th i s would be the last t ime they wouldcelebrate in th i s way.  

Reader 2 :Jesus took the bread , prayed , and gave thanks for it .He held it up and expla ined , “When you take and eatth i s , it i s l ike my own body g iven for you .” [EVERYONE SAMPLE A PIECE OF BREAD TOGETHER] Reader 3 :Then he took the cup , prayed , and gave thanks forit . He held it out to them and sa id , “Dr ink from th i s ,a l l of you . Th i s i s l ike my blood . My blood wi l l makea new covenant g iven for the forg iveness of s ins . ” [EVERYONE TASTE THE JUICE TOGETHER]

Reader 4 :Th i s new covenant was a new promise between Godand h i s people . No longer would sacr if i ces of an imalsbe necessary for s ins . Jesus was about to d ie on thecross once , for everyone ’ s s ins . Th i s promise would befor everyone . Anyone who wanted forg iveness , couldhave it . That would be the new and better covenant .The new and better promise . Th i s would be the newsometh ing to celebrate . Reader 5 :Jesus ’ d i sc ip les d idn ’t understand everyth ing he sa idat that moment . Some of what he sa id made themworr ied . But they would soon understand everyth ing . They al l sang a hymn together and left the ir mealcelebrat ion .

Reader 6 :Later that n ight Jesus would be arrested andunfa ir ly put on tr ia l and sentenced to death on across . He would d ie and be bur ied in a tomb. H i sd i sc ip les would be very sad . Reader 7:Of course , th i s i s not the end of the story . On theth ird day – what we celebrate as Easter Sunday –he rose from the dead! He arose with a new andglor if ied body that was ready for heaven! H i s fr iendssaw h im and were amazed! Reader 8 :Now, those who have accepted Jesus as the ir Saviorcelebrate the Lord ’ s Supper . When they take thebread , they remember Jesus whose body was brokenfor our s in , but was ra i sed to l i fe aga in . Weremember that that just as he rose aga in , we havehope in H IM that we too wi l l know l ife after th i s ! [PRAY, THANKING GOD FOR CHRIST’SBODY. EVERYONE TASTE THE BREAD AGAIN]

Reader 9 :When we take the ju ice , we remember how Jesusloved us so much , he wi l l ingly gave h i s l i fe ’ s b loodfor us and we pray that we wi l l be fa ithful to alsog ive our l ives for h im . [PRAY, THANKING GOD FOR CHRIST’S BLOOD.EVERYONE TASTE THE JUICE AGAIN] Reader 10:We are so grateful to Jesus for lov ing us eventhough we are s inners – lov ing us enough to d ie forus ! We know the Easter story has the sadness of thecross , but we always remember the joy of theresurrect ion ! Thank you Jesus !
