Welcome to our 2019-20 choral season programmeHaving fi nished our 2018-19 season with a stunning performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius to a packed Town Hall, we start our new season by returning to Elgar and presenting his more rarely heard oratorio, The Kingdom.

As the fi rst of our 2019-20 collaborations with the Leeds International Concert Season (LICS) we’ll be performing The Kingdom in the Town Hall on Saturday 23 November 2019 under our Music Director, David Hill, who was created MBE in the 2019 New Year’s Honours List. We are joined for this concert by the Cambridge University Symphony Chorus (whose conductor is Richard Wilberforce, previously the Phil’s chorus-master) and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

The following week, Saturday 30 November, fi nds us on a short tour, returning the compliment by joining the Cambridge choir nearer home in the glorious Ely Cathedral for a repeat performance of The Kingdom, again under the baton of David Hill.

In December we have two important pre-Christmas dates. On Saturday 14 December we’ll be behind bars, singing Christmas music for the inmates and staff of HMP Leeds, then a few days later on Thursday 19 December it’s a return to the Town Hall for two houses of the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carol Concerts, always enjoyable occasions. The Rothwell Temperance Band will be playing, and the Phil’s chorus-master, Joseph Judge, will be directing the choir items. The ever-ebullient Dr Simon Lindley will be both presenter and ‘whipper-up’ of the audience in the carols for all to sing.

Leap Year Day, 29 February 2020, sees us in the Town Hall again for a fourth collaboration with the Airedale Symphony Orchestra under their conductor, John Anderson. The programme will have an American theme, including show tunes from South Pacifi c, Porgy and Bess and An American in Paris. Then 16 May brings our fi nal LICS concert of the season with our friends from the Leeds Festival Chorus and St Peter’s Singers, and the Manchester Camerata under David Hill. Music by Beethoven and Mozart includes the former’s Mass in C.

We fi nish the season on Saturday 27 June in the delightful surroundings of Bolton Priory Church once again, with a programme of music for a summer’s evening including Ernst Toch’s Geographical Fugue for Speaking Chorus, guaranteed never to go out of tune!

Finally, a big ‘Thank You’ to you, our audience, for all your support in the past. We look forward to welcoming you again this season.

Friends of the Phil Sponsorship and legacies

Leeds Philharmonic Society, like many other cultural organisations, has at its heart a loyal band of Friends who act as a conduit for encouraging support, for keeping interested people informed about the Chorus and who help to raise much needed funds. The Friends help the Chorus to promote its performances and to bring new audiences to support its objective of promoting choral music to the public.

The Friends’ membership consists of many loyal spouses, partners, friends and former members who regularly come to the Phil’s performances, and who welcome the chance to lend their support. In return they are kept informed of our activities by means of letters from the Friends’ Secretary and Chorus Newsletters. Joining the Friends of the Phil is a way of expressing a belief in the value of maintaining high standards of live choral music in Leeds.

For further information about joining the Friends of the Phil please email Rosemary O’Dea via [email protected] or visitwww.leedsphil.com.

As a registered charity, Leeds Philharmonic Chorus does not receive government funding or any other endowments other than members’ subscriptions (which generally only cover music hire and the fees of its professional music team). The cost of performing great music continues to rise, and therefore, particularly in the case of its own-promotion concerts where it must meet all the costs of publicity, venue/orchestra hire and soloists, the Chorus relies on outside funding to help it continue to perform on a regular basis with the highest-quality orchestras, conductors and soloists.

The Chorus is therefore very grateful for the generosity of its commercial and other sponsors, as well as to the people who leave it a legacy. Your association with the Phil may be as a singer past or present, or as an audience member who has enjoyed our concerts. Becoming a sponsor or leaving a legacy is a chance to show how much you have valued this association and what the Chorus has given to you, perhaps over many years.

For nearly 150 years Leeds Philharmonic Chorus has been at the heart of choral music in Leeds. Your support, either as a sponsor or benefactor through legacy, will help to sustain the future of the Chorus for forthcoming generations of singers and concert-goers.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor orin leaving a legacy, please [email protected] – or visitwww.leedphil.com/support-us.

Recently the Phil has partnered with the ‘Give as you Live’ website. By means of a simple sign-up you can help support the Phil every time you buy goods online from many retailers. To sign up visitwww.giveasyoulive.com/join/leedsphilharmonicsociety.
