    Aims:to expand students vocabulary related to nature and landscapeto familiarise students with various types of landscape

    to encourage students to comment upon two pictures and find their

    similarities and differences

    Objectives:

    By the end of the lesson the students:

    will have scanned a text and read for specific information will have been able to use the vocabulary related to spectacular nature in a

    correct way

    will have been able to express their opinions clearlySkills: speaking, reading

    Methods: conversation, question-answer, explanation, group work

    Previous knowledge:

    Students have already studied various texts in English and read for specificinformation.

    Anticipated problems:

    Students may have difficulties in expressing similarities and differenceswhen commenting upon two pictures.

    Teaching materials: textbook, blackboard, pictures

    Lesson Stages:

    Activity 1: Warm UpAims: to set the students in the right mood for starting the lessonSkill focus: speakingTiming: 5 min.

    Procedure:

    T greets the Ss and marks the absents.

    T asks the Ss to read their homework. (They had to fill in some sentences with

    words related to travelling.)

    Activity 2: Pre-Reading ActivityAims: to create interest in the new topicSkill focus: speakingTiming: 10 min.

    Procedure:T shows Ss some pictures introducing some of the new items of vocabulary from

    the texts they will study during the class: stunning views, coastline, shipwreck,

    shipping lanes, spectacular scenery, wild game, railroad route, snow-capped peaks.

    T asks Ss to look at the pictures on pages 48-49 in their books. T asks Ss to saywhat the two pictures represent and to speculate upon their location.

    Ss give their answers and T provides further explanation.T announces the title of the lesson and writes it on the blackboard: Spectacular

    Nature.

    Activity 3: Reading Activity

    Aims: to scan the textto read the text for detailed comprehension

    to learn new items of vocabulary related to natureSkill focus: reading

    Timing: 10 min.Procedure: T asks Ss to read the first text. Ss read and T gives them explanationsand synonyms for the unknown words.

    Ss then read the second text and T proceeds as for the first text.

    Activity 4: Text AnalysisAims: to encourage students to analyse texts

    Skill focus: reading, speakingTiming: 10 minutes

    Procedure: T explains Ss that they have to match some specific information to the

    text it belongs (ex. 42 a in their textbooks). Ss work individually; then T elicitsfeedback.

    T asks Ss to decide which text may be from an encyclopaedia and which one froma tourism guide. Ss give their answers also expressing the reasons for their choice.

    Activity 5: Speaking ActivityAims: to encourage Ss to express their opinions

    to enable students to use various phrases in order to compare and contrast

    picturesSkill focus: speakingTiming: 10 minutes

    Procedure: T tells students that they need to decide upon the similarities and

    differences of the two places: The White Cliffs of Dover and the Rockies.T elicits useful language to express contrast (whereas, however, but, on the other

    handetc.) and similarity (also, the same, both,furthermore etc.)

    Activity 6: Homework Assignment (ex. 43/ p. 48)
