Loyola College (Autonomous) Chennai 600 034. Loyola History Association Annual Report 2015 – 2016 It was indeed a great year for the department. As the quotation goes, from the shackles of humiliation, the department has gone to the golden pedestals of glory. The year was very eventful for association activities and department was very much noted for its academic activities and co-curricular excellence. The Loyola History Association was inaugurated on 14 th July 2015 in Lawrence Sundaram Hall by Ms. Moortiswari Kupusamy, Deputy Superintending Archaeologist, Fort Museum, Fort St. George, Archaeological Survey of India. Shri. A. Ravisankar (Assistant Professor) was the President. The elected office bearers were Mr. S. Mahendranath (Secretary), Mr. S. Subash (Joint Secretary), Mr. S. Suresh Kumar (Cultural Secretary), Mr. S. Irudaya Antony Simon (Sports Secretary), Mr. Subash Chandra Bose (Sports Co-ordinator) and along with them office bearers for various other positions were also instituted. The Loyola History Association was inaugurated on 14th July 2015 in LawrenceSundaram Hall by Ms. Moortiswari Kupusamy, Deputy Superintending Archaeologist,Fort Museum, Fort St. George, Archaeological Survey of India. The Department of History collaborated with the Russian Centre for Culture andScience, Consulate of Russian Federation; Chennai to commemorate the 70th Anniversaryof Second World War on 14th July 2015. Mr. R. Rajagopal, Chairman of Indo RussianCentre for Rural Development stressed on the relevance of greater ties between India andRussia. Mr. Alexey Vaskov, Deputy Consul General of Russian Federation in South Indiawas the Chief Guest. Mr. Mikhail Gorbatov, Vice Consul, Russian Centre for Culture andSciences in Chennai delivered the key note address. A special address was delivered byDr. R. Dayalan, Associate Professor, Department of History DRBCCC Hindu College,Chennai. As a part of the programme, a Photo Exhibition on Second World War wasorganized and a historical Russian film “Ballad of a Soldier” was screened for thestudents.

On 16th July 2015 third year students were taken to Mysore and Coorg as a part ofeducational tour under the supervision of Dr. B.P.Jayachandran.

On 17th July 2015 Dr. C. J. Nirmal delivered a lecture on “Capsule Biography”. Thelecture was followed by an interactive session with the students.

Loyola History Association organized the ‘Ithihaasic’ 15, Inter – CollegiateDepartmental Festival on 21st August 2015. Dr. MarthalNalini, Principal, CSI EwartWomen’s College, Melrosapuram, Kanchipuram District inaugurated the programme.Students from other colleges took part in the Ithihaasic ’15. Events such as Quiz, EnglishDebate, Tamil Debate, Face Painting, Try Boss Try, Creative Writing in Tamil andEnglish, Photography were conducted. The Chief Guests for the Valedictory were Ms.VimalaJayachandran and Dr. B. P. Jayachandran, Associate Professor, Loyola College.Madras Christian College won the ‘Ithihaasic’ 15 Overall Championship. The Quiz Showby Mr.George Joseph (13-HT-007) was widely appreciated.

Madras Christian College receiving Overall ChampionshipThe association conducted the teacher’s day celebration on 4th September 2015.

Students shared their experiences about their teachers. The Chief Guest of the day wasDr. G.J. Sudhakar, Former Head of the Department of History, Loyola College. Heremembered his interaction with the students and appreciated the students who sparedtime to honour their teachers.

Our Department organized special lectures on Modern Chinese History “China: FromOpium to Deng Xiaoping” for the UG students and “Israel and Palestine” for the PGStudents on 16th September 2015. Mr. Nagapattinam K. Sendil, a distinguished Alumniand Geopolitical Consultant from France delivered these lectures.

Our students actively participated in various events held as part of the Ovations’15which was celebrated on 30th September and 1st October 2015. Students from ourdepartment created history by winning the events Pot Puri, IvergalSandhithal, Quiz, ShipWreck and reached the finals of the Western Dance. In overall medal tally the departmentstood sixth. The contributions of Mr. R.Suresh Kumar, Cultural Secretary iscommendable. He was awarded the ‘Best Cultural Secretary Award’ for his activecoordination, from the college.

Dr. G. Maheshwari delivered lecture on Archaeology

Dr. G. Maheshwari, Superintending Archaeologist, Temple Survey (South India),Archaeological Survey of India, Fort St. George, delivered the special lecture on 5th

October 2015. A special lecture was organized and dedicated to Dr. Jhaved al – Assad, thegreat Archaeologist of Syria who became martyr for protecting the heritage of Palmyraagainst ISIS militants. She shared her personal experience on the different models ofpotteries extensively excavated from the sites as well spoke in detail about the findings ofher excavations at Satavahana site in Medak, Kondapur. Rev. Dr. Lazar S.J appreciatedthe participants for their performance in Ovations’15.

Our students won the overall championship in the Inter-departmental festival(Historia) held in Ethiraj College on 28th August 2015. We won the Overall Trophy in(B.C. to A.D.) organized by Stella Maris College on 18th August 2015 and Istoria’16conducted by Madras Christian College on 27th February 2016.

The final year students had hands on experience at the Archaeological Survey ofIndia, Government MuseumEgmore, Travel Agencies and the Indian Institute of HotelManagement.The students of our department won several awards and honours by winning variousevents held as part of the Sports Day on 29th January 2016. Our department won theoverall championship in Athletics Category. Mr. Gokulakannan (13-HT-047) wasawarded Individual Championship and Dr.R.Xavier was awarded Best FacultyCoordinator for sports. The laudable leadership of Mr. Irudaya Antony Simon, Mr.Subash Chandra Bose, Mr. Ashley Roshan and Mr. Nagapandian made the department,toppers in sports. Many International and National players are part of the department.

The department organized Endowment Lecture and invited eminent personalitiesto deliver the Endowment lecture. Adv. R.S. Singgaravelan, Senior Counsel, High Courtof Madras, delivered the Dr. G.J. Sudhakar Endowment lecture on “ConstitutionalJudgements on Fundamental Rights” on 27th February 2016.

UGC sponsored special lecture on “Trajectories of Early Modern History” was deliveredby Dr. Pius Malekandathil, Professor of Medieval History, JNU, Delhi, on 7th March 2016.The year-long academic activities under the leadership of Mr.Mahendranath, Secretaryand Mr. Maria Micheal Nithyn must be highly commended. The academic activities gavea new face to the department which was only possible because of the able tutelage ofDr. L. Selvanathan, Head, Department of History. All together seven academic lectureswere conducted this academic year.
