LLOWVELD NOMADS (Founded 1996)
May 2019 at Skukuza Golf Club
WELCOME TO THE JEWEL
OF THE LOWVELD
THE KRUGER
NATIONAL PARK
AND
SKUKUZA
GOLF CLUB
FROM OUR CAPTAIN…..
My Captaincy year started at a difficult, yet scenic Skukuza Golf Club. It is ALWAYS a great experience and wonderful break-away weekend if you enjoy the Kruger National Park for longer than just a round of golf. It was wonderful to play with our two new inductees, Mxolisi Zwane (aka MZ), right and Ferenc Nagy left, , who both experienced Skukuza’s tricky Greens and tougher-than-usual rough for the first time – although both beat my score... Well done and welcome to the Lowveld Nomads, chaps!! Thank you to the Captain, Jean Rossouw, members and staff of Skukuza Golf Club, who hosted a very successful Sunday morning golf and afternoon Prize-giving session. I was happy to present to Jean with the iconic photo taken last year on Hole No. 4 when Gary “Oubaas” Botha putted out in front of a very interested (and very large) herd of Buffalo!
THE NOMADS CREED
“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.”
from the Meditations of John Donne (1573-1631)

THE NOMADS CREED
We look forward to the day when the club can again take charge of the catering section as this is the only negative aspect of playing at Skukuza. On behalf of the Nomads, we say farewell to the Club Manager, Ronel de Bruto. We thank her for the years of friendly communication and assistance and wish her well on her future endeavours. While some of us enjoyed a lengthy halfway house, others had the frustration to wait which resulted in a five-and-a-half-hour round of golf. Gentleman, can I please request that we keep the halfway stop to a maximum of five minutes and not to order food that is not quickly prepared. Please be considerate of those behind you… To our Vice Captain, Rob Valentyn – well done on your first prizegiving which is never easy… Rob also announced his 2019 Andrew Mentis Committee (pictured below). Thank you all for volunteering to assist Rob raise funds for those less fortunate. I hope to see all of you at Barberton on Sunday – they really need our support! Until then, please take it easy and stay safe! Arthur Douglass CAPTAIN

THE BOOKIE IS BACK The Bookie re-opened for business at the Skukuza game in an attempt to raise money for the Andrew Mentis Fund. Betting was fairly brisk and a total of R1990 was wagered on various players. Thankfully we had two visiting Nomads who joined us and promptly won the best player of the day and the Matchbox (Iain Ross from Brisbane had 41 points while Brian Bolton from Gauteng had 18 points). Fortunately no bets were placed on either of these two players – bring on some more visitors.
A few successful bets were placed on the best playing fourball which resulted in R350 being paid out – thanks to Rob Valentyn and George Jenkins who had succesful bets on their fourball but kindly donated the money to AMF. Currently R1250 has been transferred to the AMF and a further R710 is in the Bookies float which will end up in AMF. By popular demand betting on the Matchbox winner will continue and you can also bet On the Bunny Ears!!!
Please support this initiative as it should be a fun way of raising money for AMF and you can also walk away with a nice sum of money if you get lucky. See you in Barberton THE BOOKIE

LOCAL NOMAD WINS…
On behalf of the Lowveld, I want to congratulate Alec Blair for winning the finals of the 2018 Imperial/MFC Challenge at the fabulous Champagne Sports Resort recently. Alec progressed to The National Finals after winning the Lowveld annual tournament with an average score of 32.77 out of his best 8 rounds. During the 2-day Medal-Stableford tournament, Alec carded 62 Points, winning on a count out with Tom Barf from Natal. Attended by all 12 provincial winners, members of the National Executive, including Past National Chairman Andrew Bullen, Development Golfers and members of the South African Golf Development Board and Staff and Grant Hepburn of Golf RSA - it was a weekend of good weather, great camaraderie, some serious golf and a local Nomad brought home the trophy!! Well done, Alec - your fellow Lowveld Nomads are very proud of you.

May 2019 All that can be said about Skukuza has probably already been said but I think it is the one game that we pencil in early in the year as a “not-to-be-missed” game. Lots of people make a weekend of it and stay over on the Saturday and some even the Sunday night and it really is enjoyable. Apparently this year some of our Nomads went for a world record and 57 people stayed at Frank Gunn’s house .By all accounts a good time was had by all.
It was a first for me when the matchbox was won by a golfer getting zero points and winning by a couple of points, I played with Peet Rabie who was as sick as a dog and he scraped 20, so I think there was nobody as pleased as him when he heard the results. It was rather disappointing that after last year’s sightings we did not at least have a herd of elephants holding us up but that’s the way it works, I guess.
Last year at Skukuza we had the huge hail storm which caused havoc and damaged Rob and Hannatjie’s caravan and just when they thought that they had got away with a damage- free year an impala ran and jumped into their car causing more damage. Word has it that Rob’s insurance company has had him banned from the park!
We also had the privilege of inducting 2 new members, Ferenc and MZ. We welcome them and we hope that they have long and enjoyable times with us. It is also heartening to see how many new young members we are attracting with Jason Hogg and Michael Ferri being inducted at our next game. A proud moment for them both but particularly for the Hogg family, Brian who unfortunately cannot be there has been a stalwart member from day 1 and it is great to see that his son is now there to carry on the legacy. Big shoes to fill but I’m sure he will be a fantastic Nomad.
I see Rob is battling to fill the field for our next game at Barberton, it is always a fun day and the club and Barberton Ford always make it special for us. Yes, the course may not be in the best nick but it is clubs like this that need our support so let’s try and fill the field guys. Handicaps may also be another reason - because some people feel that they are being punished unduly when they play a course with a low course rating which then rolls over to the next course.
This is a problem at the moment but the powers that be are working hard to find the best solution so please be patient and don’t let it be the reason that you don’t play a game - we are all in the same boat and hopefully there is a solution sooner rather than later.
Once again on that jovial note I conclude my sermon for the month, here’s hoping that there is somebody whose handicap gets cut to ribbons and they play worse than me on Sunday.
See you in Barberton THE CHANGEROOM CHATTERBOX
