The electric motor is an equipment widely used by man inthe industrial development as most of the machines he hasbeen inventing depend on it.

Taking into consideration the prominent role the electricmotor plays on people's life, it must be regarded as a primepower unit embodying features that require special careincluding its installation and maintenance in order to ensureperfect operation and longer life to the unit. This meansthat the electric motor should receive particular attention.

1. INTRODUCTION

IMPORTANT:This manual concerns all Weg three phaseasynchronous squirrel cage and slip ring motors.

For motors built with high number of specialfeatures, contact Weg Máquinas whenever anadditional support is required.All standard and procedures included in thismanual must be followed accordingly to ensurea proper operation to the equipment as well asto ensure safety conditions to the personnelinvolved in the motor operation.Following these procedures is also important forthe warranty policy as explained at the end ofthis manual.Therefore, we strongly recommend to any userof Weg motors to read carefully this manual

before motor installation and operation. In caseyou still have further doubts, please contact WegMáquinas Ltda.

2. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

2.1. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

All personnel involved with electricalinstallations, either handling, lifting, operationand maintenance, should be well-informed andup-to-dated concerning the safety standard and

principles that govern the work and furthermore,they should be advised to heed them.Before work commences, it is the responsibilityof the person in charge to ascertain that thesehave been duly complied with and to alert hispersonnel of the inherent hazards of the job inhand.It is recommended that these tasks beundertaken by qualified personnel and theyshould be instructed to:-avoid contact with energized circuits or rotatingparts,

-avoid by-passing or rendering inoperative any

safeguards or protective devices,-avoid extended exposure in close proximity tomachinery with high noise levels,

-use proper care and procedures in handling,lifting, installing, operating and maintaining theequipment, and

-follow consistently any instructions and productdocumentation supplied when they do suchwork.

Before initiating maintenance procedures, besure that all power sources are disconnectedfrom the motor and accessories to avoid electricshock.

2.2. UNPACKING

Prior to shipment motors are factory-tested anddynamically balanced.The adjusting and sliding surfaces are protectedwith corrosion inhibitors.

Upon receipt, we recommend to check theboxes to see if any damage has occured duringtrasnportation.The motors are shipped with a shaft lockingdevice to avoid any damage to the bearings. Werecommended to keep this device in stock to beused on all further transportation.

If any damage, contact the carrier and WegMáquinas Ltda. The lack of notice will voidthe warranty.

When lifting the boxes, it is important to

observe the locals appropriate for thispurpose as well as to check the weight of thebox and the hoist capacity.The motors shipped in wooden boxes mustbe always lifted by the eyebolts or by forkliftmachines and never by the shaft. The boxnever can be turned around. Lifting andlowering of such boxes must be done gentlyin order to avoid damage to the bearings.Make a visual inspection after the unpackinghas been effected. Do not remove theprotecting grease from the shaft end neither the stoppers from the terminal boxes. Theseprotecting devices should remain at their places until the installation is finished. For motors fitted with shaft locking device, thisdevice must be removed. For motors fittedwith ball bearings, rotate manually the rotor several times. If damages are noticed,contact the carrier and Weg Máquinas Ltdaimmediately.

2.3. STORAGE

When motors are not immediately unpacked,boxes should be stored in their normal unprightposition in a dry temperature place, free of dustdirt, gases and corrosive atmosphere. Any otherobjects should not be stacked over or againstthe boxes.Motors must be storaged in places free fromvibrations in order to avoid damage to thebearings. For motors fitted with space heaters,these accessories must be kept switched-on. Ifpainting has suffered any damage, this must berepainted to avoid rusting. The same appliers tothe machined surfaces when protecting greasehas been wasted.

For slip ring motors, brushes must be lifted andremoved from their pocket to avoid oxidationbetween contacts and rings when these motorsare storage for more than 2 months.

Note: Before operating the motor, brushesmust be reset in their pocket and the fitting mustbe checked

2.3.1. Bearing

When a motor is kept in stock for a period of sixmonths or less, it is not necessary to effect a fullinspection on the bearings before running it.What has to be done is to rotate manually theshaft monthly. However, when motor is kept instock for more than six months, the bearingsmust be regreased, before operation, accordingto item 4.1.2.3 on the other hand, if motor is kept

in stock for approximately 2 year or more,bearings must be disassembled, according toitem 4.2.1.4 and washed with ether andchecked.

All the old grease must be removed. After thereassembly, bearings must be regreasedaccording to item 4.2.1.3 of this manual.

2.3.2. Sleeve Bearings

The performance of sleeve bearings depends on

its proper installation, lubrication andmaintenance. Before assembling anddisassembling it, read carefully the instructionsof this manual. The procedure described underitem 4.2.2 refers to the assembly anddisassembly of bearings in motors with the rotoralready mounted.

2.3.3. Insulation Resistance

When a motor is not immediately put intooperation, it should be protected against

moisture, high temperatures and impurities inorder to avoid damage to the insulation. Thewinding insulation resistance must be measuredbefore operating the motor.If the ambient contains high humidity, aperiodical inspection is recommended duringstorage. It is difficult to determine rules for theactual insulation resistance value of a motor asthe resistance varies according to type, size,rated voltage, condition of the insulating materialused and method of construction of the motor. Alot of experience is required to decide when amotor is ready for operation. Periodical records

will help to take such decision.

The following guidelines show the approximateinsulation resistance values that can beexpected from a clean and dry motor at 40 Ctemperature ambient, when test voltage isapplied for a period of one minute, supplied bythe curve of figure 2.1, as per NBR 5383.The RM insulation resistance is given by theformula:

where:RM minimum insulation resistancerecommended in Mega Ohm with the windingat a temperature of 40 C;Un -Rated voltage of the motor in kV.

If the test is performed at a differenttemperature, it is necessary to correct thereading to 40 C by using an insulation resistancevariation curve in relation to temperature, givenby the motor it self. If this curve is not available itis possible to use an approximate correctiongiven by the curve of figure 2.1, as per NBR5383 Standard.On new motors, lower values are sometimesobtained, as solvents are present in theinsulating varnishes which become volatile in alater stage during normal operation. This does

not necessarily mean that the motor in notsuitable for operation considering that theinsulation resistance will increase after a periodof operation.On old motors, still in operation, higher valuesare normally obtained. The comparison withvalues obtained from previous tests on the samemotor under identical load, temperature andhumidity conditions will be a better indication ofthe insulation conditions in comparison to thevalue obtained from a single test. Any sudden orhigh reduction of the value requires carefulattention.

The insulation resistance is normally measuredwith a Megometer.

If the insulation resistance is lower than thevalues obtained by the above mentioned

formula, motors must be submitted to a dryingprocess, as per item 4.8.

2.4. HANDLING

Use only the existing eyebolts to lift the motor.Never lift the motor by the shaft. Check themotor weight. Lifting and lowering must be donegently in order to avoid damage to the bearings.The eyebolts attached to bearing housing, heatexchanger, endbells, etc, should be used tohandle these components only.

3. INSTALLATION

Eletric motors should be installed in locations ofeasy access for inspection and maintenance. Ifthe surrounding atmosphere contains humid,corrosive or flammable substances or particles,it is essential to ensure an adequate degree ofprotection. The installation of motors in ambientswhere there are vapours, gases or dusts,flammable or combustible materials, subject tofire or explosion, should be done in accordancewith ABNT NBR, NEC Art. 500 (National

Eletrical Code) and UL-674 (UnderwritersLaboratories, Inc.) Standard.Under no circunstances, motors can beenclosed in boxes or covered with materialswhich may impede or reduce the free circulationof cooling air. Motors fitted with external coolingmust be located at least 50mm from the groundto permit free air circulation. The air inlet andoutlet should never be obstruced or reduced byconductors, pipes or other objects. Theinstallation site should permit conditions of airrenewall at a rate of 30m³ per minute for each100 kW motor output.

3.1. MECHANICAL ASPECTS

3.1.1. Foundations

The motor base must be level and free from

vibrations. For this reason, concrete foundationis recommended.The type of base to be built will depend on thenature of the soil at the installation site or on thefloor capacity.When designing the motor foundation, it must betaken into consideration the fact that the motormight, accasionally, be submitted to a torquehigher than the rated torque. If such designing isnot correctly made, vibration problems can occurto the unit (foundation, motor and drivenmachine).Note: On the concrete base, a mettalic plate

to support the leveling bolt must be provided.Based on figure 3.1, the forces over thefoundation can be calculated by the followingformulas:

NOTE: The drawing above shows the forcesover the motor whenrunning clockwise. For counter clockwiserotation, forces are reversed (F1, F2, 4.Cmax.)

Steel or iron blocks, plane surfaces blocks withanchorage devices can be fitted in the concretefoundation to fix the motor feet as suggested infigure 3.2. It is important that all the structureequipment are made in such a way that they cantransmit any force or torque which may occurduring the operation.

3.1.1.2. Types of bases

a) Concrete basesAs mentioned above, the concrete bases are themost commonly used for the fixation of thesemotors.

The type and size of the foundation - as well asother fixing devices for this purpose will dependon the type and size of the motor.

- Installation and examples:The motors can be mounted on a concrete base

with four foundation blocks. See dimensions ofthe installation components in the table below

Examples of preparation

Remove all dirt from the foundation blocks inorder to ensure a perfect anchorage betweenthe foundation blocks and the motor. Fix thefoundation blocks at the motor feet by means ofbolts.Provide shims of different thickness (totaltrickness of about 2mm) between the motor feetand the foundation base to ensure a furtheraccurate alignment vertically.

Inside the feet holes, the fastening bolts must becovered with a metal sheet or presspan in orderto center the foundation blocks exactly to thefeet holes and perform an accurate alignmenthorizontally.Place shims or levelling bolts under thefoundation blocks in order to obtain a perfectmotor levelling and alignment between the motorand the driven machine. After introducing theconcrete, make an accurate control of the

alignment. Eventual small corrections can bedone by washers or metal plates or by means ofa new adjustment of the fastening boltclearences. Tighten now firmly all fasteningbolts.Make sure all motor feet surfaces are supporteduniformly without damaging motor frame. Aftercompleting the test, introduce two tapered pinsfor correct fastening. For this purpose, use thepre-drilled holes in the feet.

b) Slide railsWhen drive system is done by pulleys, themotor should be mounted on slide rails and thelower part of the belt must be pulling.The rail that stays near the drive pulley ispositioned in such a manner that the adjustingbolt be between the motor and the drivenmachine. The other rail must be positioned withthe bolt in the opposite position, as shown in fig.3.3. The motor is bolted to the rails and set onthe base.The drive pulley is then aligned in such a waythat its center be in the same level of the drivenpulley center.Motor and driven machine shafts must be in aparallel position.The belt should not be excessively stretched,see fig. 3.9.After the alignment, rails are to befixed.

c) Metallic basesThe metallic bases must have a flat surfaceunder motor feet in order to avoid framedeformation. The bearing housing surfaceshould be so determined that under the feet ofthe motor one can place shim plates ofapproximately 2mm thickness.Motor should not be removed from theircommon metallic bases for alignment, themetallic bases should be levelled on the actualfoundation.When a metallic base is used to adjust theheight of the motor shaft end with the machineshaft end, it should be levelled on the concretebase.After the base has been levelled, foundationstuds tightened, and the coupling checked, themetal base and the studs are then cemented.

3.1.2.Alignment/Levelling

The electric motor must be accurately alignedwith the driven machine, particularly in cases ofdirect coupling. An incorrect alignment cancause bearing defects, vibrations and even shaftbreaking.The best way to ensure correct alignment is touse dial indicator placed on each coupling half,one reading radially and the other axially.In this way, simultaneous readings can beinformed and one can check any parallel (fig.3.4a) or concentricity deviations (fig. 3.4b) byrotating the shaft. The dial indicator should notexceed 0.05mm. If the operator is sufficientlyskilled, he can obtain alignment with clearancegauge and a steel ruler, providing that thecouplings be perfect and centered (fig. 3.4c)

A measurement at 4 different points of thecircumference should not give a readingdifference larger than 0.03mm.

On the alignment/levelling it is important to takeinto consideration the effect of the temperatureover the motor and driven machine. Thedifferent expansion levels of the coupledmachines can modify the alignment/levellingduring motor operation.

After the set (motor and base) is perfectlyaligned either at cold or at hot, motor must bebolted, as shown in fig. 3.5. There areinstruments which use visible laser ray added byspecific computer programs that can performand ensure high precision alignment.

3.1.3. Couplings

a) Direct coupling

Whenever possible, it is recommended to usedirect coupling due to lower cost, less spacerequired, no belt slippage and lower accidentrisk.In case of speed ratio drives, it is also commonto use direct coupling with a gearbox.

IMPORTANT: Align carefully the shaft endsusing, whenever possible, flexible coupling.

b)Gearbox couplingPoorly aligned gearbox couplings normallycause jerking motions which provoke vibration tothe coupling and to the motor. Therefore, duecare must be given to correct shaft alignment,perfectly parallel in cases of straight gears, andat the correct angle for bevel or helical gears.Perfect gear arrangements can be checked byinserting a strip of paper on which the teethmarks will be traced after a single rotation.

c) Belt and pulley couplingBelt transmission is the most commonly usedwhen a speed ratio is required.

Assembly of pulleys: the assembly of pulleyson shafts featured with keyway and threadedhole must be done by inserting it halfway up to

the keyway merely by manual pressure.On shafts without threaded hole it isrecommended to heat up the pulley to about 80C (fig. 3.6).

DISASSEMBLY OF PULLEYS: for disassemblyof pulleys it is recommended to use the devicesshown in figure 3.7 in order not to damage thekey neither shaft surface.

Hammers should be avoided when fitting pulleysand bearings. The fitting of bearings with the aidof hammers causes spots in the bearing races.These initially small spots increase with usageand can develop to a stage that completelydamage the bearing. The correct positioning of apulley is shown in figure 3.8.

RUNNING: Avoid unnecessary thrusts on thebearings by ensuring that the shafts are paralleland the pulleys perfectly aligned (figure 3.9).

Laterally misaligned pulleys, when running,

transmit alternating knocks to the rotor and candamage the bearing housing. Belt slippage canbe avoided by applying a resin type materialsuch as rosin.Belt tension is only required to avoid slippageduring operation (figure 3.10).Excessively smallpulleys should be avoided; these cause shaftflexion as belt traction increases with thedecrease of pulley size

3.1.3.1. COUPLING ARRANGEMENT FORSLEEVE BEARING MOTORS – AXIALCLEARANCE

Motors fitted with sleeve bearings should bedirectly coupled to the driven machine or evenusing a gearbox. Pulley/belt coupling is notrecommended.These sleeve bearing motors have three

identification marks on the shaft end. The centralmark (red painted) indicated the magneticcenter; the other two indicate the limits for therotor axial displacementWhen coupling the motor, the following aspectsmust be considered:- Bearing axial clearance which is shown on

the chart below for each bearing size.- Axial displacement of the driven machine, if

any.Maximum axial clearance allowed by thecoupling.

The motor must be coupled in such a way thatthe arrow attached to the bearing frame be

positioned exactly on the central mark (redpainted) while motor is in operation.During motor starting or even under operation,rotor should move freely between the twoexternal lots if the driven machine creates anyaxial force on the motor shaft. Under nocircumstance, motor can operate continuouslywith axial force on the bearing.

Sleeve bearings normally used by WegMaquinas are not designed to withstand axialforces continuously.

Figure 2 below shows part of the drive endbearing highlighting a basic configuration of theshaft/bearing set as well as axial clearances.

The figure below shows part of the bearingframe where the arrow indicates the magneticcenter and the three marks on the shaft.

3.2. ELECTRICAL ASPECTS

3.2.1. Supply system

Proper electric power supply is very important.All the wires and protection system must ensure

an excellent quality of electric power supply on

the motor terminals within the followingparameters:- Voltage: it can fluctuate within a rangeof more or less 10% in relation to ratedvalue.- Frequency: it can fluctuate within a rangeof more or less 15% in relation to ratedvalue.- Voltage/frequency: it can occur a combinedfluctuation of more or less 10%.

3.2.2. Connection

In order to connect the supply conductors,remove the covers of the rotor and statorterminal boxes (if any).Cut the sealing rings (standard motors are notsupplied with cable glands) according to thediameter to be used.Insert the conductors into the rings. Cut thesupply conductors to desired length, disbarkt theends and assemble the terminals on them.Connect the metallic covering of the conductors(if any) to the common grounding.Cut the grounding terminal to size and connect itto the existing connector in the terminal boxand/or frame.Fasten all connections firmly.

NOTE: Do not use, for terminal fastening, eelwashers or other material which do not haveexcellent electric conductivity characteristics.

It is recommended to apply a grease protectionon all connections before performing theconnection. Insert all sealing rings into therespective grooves. Screw the terminal boxcover carefully, ensuring that the sealing ringsare correctly introduced.

3.2.3. General connection diagrams

3.2.5.Starting methods for eletric motors

A) DOL STARTING

Whenever possible, three-phase squirrel cagemotors should be started directly at full voltagethrough a contactor.DOL is the easiest method of starting; onlyfeasible, however, when the starting currentdoes not affect the power supply.Normally, the starting current of induction motorsis six to seven times the rated current. Note thathigh starting current can cause supplydisturbances to other consumers due to voltagedrops in the main power supply.

This situation can be corrected with one ofthe following options:a)The power supply rated current is so high that

the starting current is not proportionally high;b)Motor is started under no-load conditions with

a short starting cycle and, as a consequence,a low starting current with a transient voltage

drop tolerable to other consumers.

c)When duly authorized by the regional HydroCompany (utility)

B) STARTING WITH A COMPENSATINGSWITCH

If DOL starting is not feasible, either due torestrictions imposed by the utility or due to theinstallation itself, reduced voltage indirectstarting methods can be used in order to reducethe starting current.The single line connection diagram (b) showsthe basic components of a compensating switchfeaturing a transformer (usually an auto-tranformer) with a series of taps correspondingto the different values of the reduced voltage.Only three motor terminals are connected to theswitch, being the others interconnected as perdiagram for the indicated voltage.Starting duty

F)STARTING OF SLIP RING MOTORSWITH RHEOSTAT

For starting of slip ring motors an externalrheostat is connected to the rotor by means of aset of brushes and slip rings (connectiondiagram F).The extra rotor resistance is held in the circuitduring the starting to reduce the starting currentand increase torque. Furthermore, it is possibleto regulate the external resistance so as to havea starting torque equal to, or close to the motor

breakdown torque.

NOTE: Every time customers intend to useother than DOL, inform WEG Máquinas inadvance so we can analyse the starting torquesrequired by the load .

f) Automatic starting of slip ring motorsfor successive stages.

Electric motors are fitted, under customersrequest, with overheating protective devices (incase of overload, locked rotor, voltage drop,inadequate motor ventilation) such as athermostat (thermal probe), thermistors, RTD s.These overheating protective devices do notrequire other independent devices.

3.2.6.1.Temperature limits for windings

The temperature of the winding hottest pointmust be kept below the thermal class limit.The total temperature corresponds to the sum ofambient temperature plus temperature rise ( T)plus the difference between averagetemperature of the winding and the hottest point.By standard, maximum ambient temperature is40°C. any temperature above this is consideredspecial.The temperature values and the permissibletotal temperature at the hottest point are given inthe chart below:

THERMOSTAT (Thermal probe): these arebimetallic thermal detectors with normally closedsilver contacts and they trip at pre-determinedtemperatures. Thermostats areseries-connected or independent according tothe connection diagram.

THERMISTORS (PTC or NTC): They arethermal detectors composed of semi-condutors

PTC which sharply change their resistancewhen reaching a set temperature. They areseries-connected or independent according tothe connection diagram

NOTE:Thermostats and thermistors areconnected to a control unit that cuts off themotor power supply or switches on an alarmsystem, in response to the thermistors reaction.

RESISTANCE TEMPERATURE DETECTORS(RTD's): RTD's are resistance thermal detectorsusually made of platinum.

Basically, RTD's operate on the principle thatthe electrical resistance of a metallic conductorvaries linearly with the temperature. Thedetector terminals are connected to a controlpanel, usually fitted with a temperature gauge.Normally Weg Motors are supplied with oneRTD per phase and one per bearing wherethese protective devices are regulated for alarmand subsequent switch-off. For extra safetyreasons, it is possible to fit two RTD's perphase.Table 3.2 shows a comparison between theprotection systems.

NOTE: 1) If required by theapplication, other protective devicesmust be used besides the onesindicated above 2) Table 3.3shows the temperature values inrelation to the measured Ohmicresistance.

3) It is recommended to adjust the relaysaccording to table 3, that is:Class FAlarm: 140°CTripping: 155°CClass HAlarm: 155°CTripping: 180°C

The alarm and tripping values can be definedbased on experience. However, they can notexceed the values given previously.

3.2.7. Space Heaters

When motors are fitted with space heaters toavoid water condensation during long periods ostandstill,the space heaters must be connected so thatthey are energized immediately after the motoris switched-off and are deenergized immediately

after the motor is switched-on. A dimensionaldrawing and a specific nameplate existing on themotor indicate the supply voltage and thecharacteristics of the space heaters installed.

3.3.COMMISSIONING

3.3.1.Preliminary Inspection

Before starting a motor for the first time, or afterlong period of standstill,check the followingitems:

1)Is the motor clean? Were all packingmaterialsand cleaning materials removed?2)Make sure the supply voltage andfrequency correspond to those indicated onthe nameplate.3)Ascertain that the endbell and bearinghousing fastening bolts are firmily tightened.4)Make sure the motor is correctly aligned (asper item 3.1.2)Are the bearings correctly lubricated (as peritem 4.2)Are the rotor terminals connected? (Only forslip ring motors).

Are the thermal protector conductors, theroundingterminal and the spaceheatersconnected?Is the insulation resistence of the rotor andstator according to the prescribed value ? (asper item 2.3.3)Were all objects such as tools, measuringinstruments and alignment devices removedfrom the area of the motor?10)Are the brush-holders in order? Are thebrushes making contact? (see item 4.6)11)Are all motor fixing bolts duly tightened?12)When the motor is started at no load, doesit rotate freely without abnormal noise? Is thedirection of rotation correct? (To reverse therotation, invert any of two terminal leads ofthe power supply).13) Is the motor ventilation OK? Note thedirection of rotation of unidirectional motors.NOTES:

1) The gap between brush holder andSlip ringsurfaces should be between 2mm to 4mm.2) Brush pressure on the slip ring should bein accordance with the specified value, and thebrush incidence to the contact surface should beperpendicular.3) If the load (operation rated current) applied tothe motor are not in accordance with the ratedcharacteristics of such motor (above or below),the brushes specification must be analysed inrelation to the actual load requirements. Checkdata given in item 4.6.

4) Before changing rotation direction oftwo-pole motors, contact Weg Máquinas foranalysis.

5) The "H" line motors with special noiselevel are built with unidirectional fan (allRPM´s). To reverse rotation direction, contactWeg Máquinas in order to analyse the fan.

6) The "Master" line motors are also builtwith unidirectional fans. So if rotationdirection has to be reversed, contactWeg Máquinas in order to analyse thefan.

WARNING:The non observation of the items describedabove can lead to serious problems to motorperformance, causing excessive wear tobrushes and slip rings (for wound rotor motors),overheating and possible damage to motorwindings. These problems are not coveredunder the warranty terms included in this

manual.

Three-phase squirrel cage rotor motor:After careful examination on the motor, followthe normal sequence of starting operation listedabove.

Three-phase slip ring motors:The starting method must follow themanufacturer instructions for starting methods.On motors with permanent contact brushes, thestarting rheostat remains in the "run" positionwhile the motor is running. Special speed controlrheostat designed for permanent connection toresistance contacts within a given range ofsettings are an exception to the above.

Fix brush-holder system: (permanent contactof brush with slip ring)Brushes must be correctly set against the slipring.

Adjustable brush-holder system: (manual orautomatic)Brushes must be in contact and correctly setagainst the slip rings.After complete motor acceleration, make surethat the brush lifting system has worked.3.3.2. OperationRun the motor coupled to the load for a period ofat least one hour to check if abnormal noises orsign of overheating occur. If there will be

excessive vibrations in the unit between theinitial operation condition and the condition afterthermal stability, alignment and levelling must berechecked. Compare the line current drawn withthe value shown on the nameplate.Under continuous duty without load fluctuation,this sbould not exceed the rated current timesthe service factor, also shown on the nameplate.All measuring instruments and devices sbouldbe continuously checked in order to correct anyabnormal operation, if required.Before proceeding any task on the motor, it isextremely important to observe the following: to

touch any moving part on a running motor, evenswitched-off, is a danger to life.

a) Three-phase squirrel cage motors:It suffices to open stator circuit switch, and withthe motor stopped, reset the auto-transformer, ifany, to the "start" position;b) Three-phase slip ring motors:Open the stator circuit switch. When the motor isstopped, reset the rheostat to the "start"position.

3.4. ACOUSTICAL PROPERTIES

Day by day, electrical motors are increasinglyused in offices and homes. Under thesecircustances, it is essential that motors operatesilently and safe without contributing to ambientdiscomfort. The solution lies in the ever closercollaboration of the user and the motormanufacturer.The proper planning of home, office and factoryaccoustics requires a knowledge of the sourcesof motor noises and how they affect the ambientnoise level wherever motors are located.The following parts of a motor can generatenoise within the audio-frequency range:1. Cooling system2. Brushes3. Bearings4. Magnetic circuit.The part of the motor mainly responsible asnoise source depends on its size, speed,degree of mechanical protection (casing) and ofthe driven machine design. Cooling systemnoise is airborne and usually affects only thenoise level in the ambient where motor isinstalled. Howerer, it is a different matter if thenoise source is in the bearings or in themagnetic circuit. In this case, the noise is due tomechanical vibration of the part itself, or of theentire motor, and the sound is spreaded throughthe foundation, walls or ducts. This type ofsound propagation, via structural components ofan installation, can be reduced by installing themotor on suitable designed vibration dampers. Itis important to note that improper dampers can

even increase vibration.The graphs in figures 3.11 to 3.18 show noisereduction attainable with different devices. Theillustrations below each graph representimaginary motors.(1) The dotted line indicates the noise level

3.5 - MOTOR USED ON HAZARDOUS AREA –EXPLOSIVE GAS ATMOSPHERES

Motors designed for hazardous areas are fittedwith additional safety features which are definedin specific standards for each type of hazardouslocation, based on its classification.The general requirements for electricalapparatus for hazardous locations are describedin the following Brazilian and foreign standards,respectively:NBR 9815 = Electrical apparatus for explosivegas atmospheres.General requirements (specifications)IEC 79-0 = Electrical apparatus for explosivegas atmospheres.EN 50014 = Electrical apparatus for potentiallyexplosive atmosphere.General requirements

3.5.1 – GENERAL CARE WITH ZHAZARDOUSLOCATION MOTORS

Before installing, operating or carrying outmaintenance services on electric motors usedon hazardous locations, care must be taken onthe following:- The standards listed below, applied to each

case, must be studied and understood;- All requirements included in the applicable

standards must be understood accordingly.

Exe – Increased Safety: IEC 79-7 / NBR 9883 / 

EN 50019Exp – Pressurized: IEC 79-2 / NBR 5420Exn – Non sparking: IEC 7915

3.5.2 – ADDITIONAL CARE RECOMMENDEDFOR HAZARDOUS LOCATION MOTORS

- Before carrying out maintenance services,inspections or repairs on the motor, makesure it is de-energized and completelystopped;

- All motor protections must be correctlyinstalled and duly adjusted before starting

the operation;- Make sure motors are properly grounded;- Connection terminals must be properly

connected so as to avoid poor contactswhich can result in overheating or sparking.

Note:All other recommendations referring to storage,handling, installation and maintenance includedin this manual and applied to the motor inquestion must also be followed accordingly .

4.MAINTENANCE

A well-programed maintenance of eletric motorscan be summed up as a periodical inspection ofinsulation levels, temperature rise (winding andbearings), wears, bearing lubrication and usefullife, and occasional checking of fan air flow,vibration levels, brushes and slip rings wears.In case one of the above items are not followedaccordingly, you might have unexpected stopsof the equipment. Inspection cycles depend onthe type of the motor and conditions under whichit operates.Frame must be kept clean, free of dust, dirt or oilin order to make the cooling process easier.

Transportation care:On any transportation, motors fitted with roller orball bearings must have their shaft locked inorder to avoid bearing damage.To lock the shaft use the shaft locking deviceshipped together with the motor. See item 2.2.

4.1. CLEANLINESS

Motors should be kept clean, free of dust, dirtand oil. Soft brushes or clean cotton rags shouldbe used to clean the motors. A jet ofcompressed air should be used to removenon-abrasive dust from the fan cover and anyaccumulated grime from the fan and cooling fins.The heat exchanger tubes (if any) must be keptclean and free of any obtructing object to

facilitate the air circulation. For the cleanlines ofthe tubes, a stick with a round brush at the endscan be used which, inserted in such tubes,removed all accumulated dirt.

NOTE: To perform such cleanliness, removethe ND endbell of the heat exchanger andinsert the brush into the tubes.

In order to effect this cleanliness, a stick can beused which, inserted into the tubes, remove allthe accumulated dust. If motor is fitted with air-water heat exchanger, a periodical cleanliness is

inside the radiator tube is required to removeany dirt condensation.On slip ring motors, brushes and brush-holdersshould never be cleaned with compressed air,but with vacuum cleaner or any cotton ragsoaked in a suitable solvent (see item 4.4. and4.5).

Oil or damp impregnated impurities can beremoved with rags soaked in a suitable solvent.Terminal boxes of IP54 protection motors shouldalso be cleaned; their terminals should be free ofoxidation, in perfect mechanical condition, and

all unused space dust-free. For agressive

environment, IP(W)55 protection motors arerecommended.

4.1.1. Partial Maintenance

-Drain the condensed water.-Clean the inside of the terminal boxes.-Make a visual inspection of the windinginsulation.

- Clean the slip rings (see 4.4 and4.5)- Check the condition of the brushes.- Clean the heat exchanger.

4.1.2. Complete Maintenance

- Clean the dirty windings with a softbrush.- Grease, oil and other impurities whichadhered on the winding can be removed with arag soaked in alcohol. Dry the windings with a

 jet of compressed air.- A jet of compressed air should be usedto clean the bearings and the air ducts in thestator and rotor cores.- Drain the condensed water and cleanthe inside of the terminal boxes as well as theslip rings.- Measure the insulation resistance (seetable 2.1).- Clean the brushes/brush holdersaccording to items 4.4 and 4.5.-Clean the heat exchanger accordingly.

NOTE: When motor is fitted withair inlet and/or air outlet filters,these should be cleaned with a jetof compressed air. If the dust isdifficult to be removed with a jet of

compressed air, then they should be washed incold water with neutral detergent. After that, drythem in horizontal position.

4.2. LUBRICATION

4.2.1. Grease lubricated bearings

The purpose of this maintenance is to lenghtenbearing life.

MAINTENANCE INCLUDES:

a) Attention to the overall status of thebearings;b) Cleaning and lubrication;c) Inspection in details of the bearings.Motor noise should be measured at regularintervals of one to four months. A well-tuned ear

is perfecty capable of distinguishing unusualnoises, even with rudimentary tools such as ascrew driver, etc.. For a more reliable analysis ofthe bearings, sophysticated equipment isrequired.

Bearing temperature control is also part of routine maintenance. The temperature rise of grease lubricated bearings as recommendedunder item 4.2.1.2 should not exceed 60 C (T=60°C/max. ambient = 40°C, absolutetemperature = T + ambiente) measured atthe external bearing cap.Constant temperature control can be doneby means of external thermometers or byembedded thermal elements.

Alarm and tripping temperatures for ballbearings can be set for 90°C and 100°Crespectively.

Weg motors are normally supplied with greaselubricated ball or roller bearings.Bearings should be lubricated to avoid metalliccontact of the moving parts, and also forprotection against corrosion and wear. Lubricantproperties deteriorate in the course of time anddue to mechanical operation and, furthemore, alllubricants are subject to contamination underworking conditions. For this reason, lubricantsmust be renewed or replaced from time to time.

4.2.1.1. Lubrication Intervals

WEG motors are supplied with lithium-basedUNIREX N2 grease (Supplier: ESSO) enoughfor the running period given on the data sheetand bearing nameplate..Lubrication intervals depend on the size of themotor, speed, working conditions, type of greaseused and working temperature. The lubricationperiod and type of bearings are indicated on themotor nameplate.

Motors kept in stock should berelubricated every six months. Once

a month, shaft must be in order tohave the grease homogenized.

4 .2.1.2. Quality and Quantity of Grease

Correct lubrication is important for properbearing operation. It means to say the greasemust be applied correctly and in sufficient

amount. On the other hand, insufficient orexcessive greasing are prejudicial.Excessive greasing causes overheating due tohigh resistance encountered by the rotatingparts and, in particular, by the compacting of thelubricant and its eventual loss of lubricatingqualities.This can cause leakage with the greasepenetrating into the motor winding, commutatorrings or brushes.A lithium based grease is commonly used for thelubrication of electric motor bearings as it is ofgood mechanical stability, insoluble in water

and has a melting point of approximately 200 C.This grease should never be mixed with sodiumor calcium based grease

4.2.1.3. Compatibility

The compatibility of different types of grease cancreate ocasional problems. When the propertiesof the mixture remain within the individualproperty range of the greases, we can say thegreases are compatible. To avoid any possibleincompatibility grease problem we recommend

to preform an appropriate lubrication which canbe summarized as follows: after removing theold grease and carring out a completecleanliness of the grease cavity, new greasemust be pumped in. When this procedure is notallowed, pump in new grease by pressure. Thismust be repeated until a new grease is drainedout through the grease relief.As a general rule, greases with samesoponification type are compatible. Howeverdepending on the mixture rate, they can then berecomended to mix different types of greasebefore contacting a service agent and/or WEG.

Same and basic oils can not be mixed as theywill not produce a homogeneous mixture. In thiscase, either a hardening or a softening (or dropof the resulting mixture melting point) can occur.

Standard grease used on WEGmotors is lithium-based UNIREX N2(Supplier: ESSO). The specificationof this grease as well as lubricationintervals are supplied on thebearing nameplate attached tomotor frame.

4.2.1.4. Lubricating Instructions

All high and low voltage motors are fitted withgrease fitting for the bearing lubrication.The lubrication system was designed to allow,when regreasing, the removal of all grease fromthe bearings races throught a grease reliefwhich at the same time impedes the entry ofdust or other contaminants harmful to thebearing.This grease relief also avoids injury to thebearings from the already known problem ofover-greasing. It is advisable to relublicate whilethe motor is running so as to allow the renewalof grease in the bearings housing.If this procedure is not possible due to existingparts near the nipple (pulleys, etc), which canbe harmful to the operator, the followingprocedure should be followed:- Inject about half the estimated amountof grease and run the motor at full speed forapproximately one minute;

- Switch off the motor and inject theremaining grease.

The injection of all the grease with the motorstopped can cause penetration of a portion ofthe lubricant into the motor through the internalseal of the bearing housing.

NOTE: Grease fittings must be clean beforegreasing the motor in order to avoid entry of anyforeign bodies into the bearing. For lubrication,

use only a manual grease gun.

BEARING LUBRICATION STEPS

1)Remove the grease relief cover.2)Clean the area around the grease fittingwith aclean cotton fabric.3)With the motor running, add grease with amanual grease gun until the lubricantcommences to expelle from the grease relief,or insert the amount of grease recommendedin Tables herewith indicated4)Leave the motor running enough time todrain all excess of grease.

4.2.1.5. Replacement of bearings

Afther removing the bearing cap, avoid demageto the cores by filling the air gap between therotor and the stator with stiff paper of a properthickness. Providing suitable tooling is

employed, disassembly of bearings is notdifficult. (See bearing extractor with 3 grips in fig.4.2).

The extractor grips must be applied to thesidewall of the inner ring to be stripped, or to anadjacent part.To ensure perfect functioning and no injury tothe bearing parts, it is essential that the

assembly be done under conditions of completecleanliness and by skilled personnel. Newbearings should not be removed from theirpackages until they are assembled. Prior tofitting a new bearing, ascertain that the shaft hasno rough edges or signs of hammering.During assembly, bearings cannot be subjectedto direct blows. To make the assembly easier, itis recommended to heat up (inductive heater)the bearing. The aid used to press or strike thebearings should be applied to the inner ring.

4.2.2. Assembly/disassembly Of SleeveBearings

4.2.2.1. General Instructions

Sleeve bearing performance is dependent onproper installation, lubrication and maintenance.Before assembling the bearing carefully read allinstructions contained herein to become familiarwith the complete bearing assembly procedure.A proper maintenance of sleeve bearingsinclude periodical checking of the level andactual condition of the lubricating oil, checking ofnoise level and vibration of the bearings, follow-up of the operating temperature, and fasteningof the fixing and assembly bolts. The frame mustbe kept clean, free from dust, oil and dirt tofacilitate cooling system.

Threaded holes for connecting the thermometer,oil sight glass, oil inlet, and immersion heater, orcooling coil (for oil sump thermometer orcirculating pump with adapter) are provided oneither side, so that all connections can be madeon the right or left side of the bearing housing asrequired.The oil drain plug is located centrally on theunderside of the bearing housing.In case of circulating oil lubrication, the outletconnection should be screwed into the threadedhole of an oil sight glass.If the bearing is electrically insulated, thespherical liner seat surfaces in the hounsing arelined with a non-conducting material.Do not remove this lining.The antirotation pin is also insulated and theshaft seals are manufactured from a specialnon-conducting material.Temperature monitoring instruments withcontact to the bearing liner should be insulatedappropriately (i.e., insulated protection tubes,synthetic fittings, etc.)Water-cooled bearings are provided with thecooling coil installed. Care must be taken toprotect the conections from damage whenhandling the housing prior to installation.

4.2.2.2. Disassembly Of The Sleeve BearingSystem (Type "Ef")

To disassemble the bearing liner and allassociated parts from the bearing housing, carryout the following instructions. Carefully store alldisassembled parts in a safe location (see fig.4.3.

Drive end side

- Throughly clean the exterior of thebearing housing. Loosen and remove the oildrain plug (1) at the bottom of the bearinghousing. Drain the oil from the bearing housing.

- Loosen and remove the bolts (4)connecting the frame cover (3) to the flange ofthe bearing housing cap (5). Remove the framecover.

- Loosen and remove the bolts (6) at thesplit line of the bearing housing (2) and bearinghousing cap (2 and 5).

- Use the lifting eyebolts (9) to lift (byhand or hoist) the bearing housing cap (5)straight up, so that the cap is completelydisengaged from the lower halves of thestationary baffle (11) labyrinth seals labyrinthseal carrier (20), machine seal bearing housingand the bearing liner (12).

- Pull the bearing housing cap forward outof and away from the bearing area.

- Loosen and remove the bolts (19)securing the upper half of the stationary baffle.Loosen and remove the bolts (10) securing theupper half of the seal carrier (20) to the bearinghousing cap.

- Lift (by hand or hoist) the upper half ofthe bearing liner (13) and remove it.

- Loosen and remove the bolts at the splitline of the oil ring (14). Carefully disengage thedowels holding the oil ring halves together andremove the oil ring.

- Remove the garter springs that encirclethe labyrinth seals. Lift off the upper half ofeach seal, then rotate the lower half of eachseal out of the grooves in the seal carrier andbearing housing.

- Disconnect and remove RTD's,thermocouples, or any other temperaturedetecting instruments that enter the lower halfof the bearing liner.

- Using a hoist or jack, raise the shaftslightly so that the lower half of the bearing linercan be rolled out of the bearing housing.Important: To make that feasible it is

necessary that bolts 4 and 6 of the otherbearing half be loose.- Roll out (be careful not to use excessiveforce) the lower half of the bearing liner andremove it.

- Loosen and remove the bolts (19)securing the bottom half of the stationary baffle(11) to the seal carrier. Loosen and remove thebolts (10) securing the bottom half of the sealcarrier (21) to the bearing housing. Remove theseal carrier.

- Loosen and remove the bolts (4)securing the bearing housing (2) to the motor

frame.

- Loosen and remove the bolts (8)securing the machine seal (7) to the bearinghousing. Remove the machine seal.

- Thoroughly clean and inspect allindividual parts which have been removed.Clean the interior of the bearing housing.

- To reassemble the bearing system,follow the preceeding instructions in the reverseorder.

NOTE:

Non drive end side

-Thoroughly clean the exterior of the bearinghousing. Loosen and remove the oil drainplug(2) at the bottom of the bearing housing. Drain(3) the oil from the bearing housing.Loosen and remove the bolts (19) connectingthe frame cover to the flange of the bearinghousing cap (11). Remove the frame cover.Loosen and remove the bolts (4) securing theend cover (5) to the bearing housing and tothe bearing housing cap. Remove the endcover.Loosen and remove the bolts (6) at thesplitine of the bearing housing and bearinghousing cap(2 and 5).-Use the lifting eyebolts (9) to lift (by hand orhoist) the bearing housing cap (5) straight up,that the cap is completely disengaged from

the lower halves of the labyrinth seal andbearing housing (2) and the bearing liner(12).-Lift (by hand or hoist) the upper half of thebearing liner (13) and remove it.-Loosen and remove the bolts at the split lineof the oil ring (14). Carefully disengage thedowels holding the oil ring halves togetherand remove the oil ring.-Remove the garter spring that encircles thelabyrinth seal. Lift of the upper half of theseal,then rotate the lower half of the seal out the

4.2.2.3.Sleeve bearing assembly

Check contact face and mounting recess of thebracket making sure it is clean and properlymachined. Inspect shaft to ensure it is smooth(Ra 0.4, equivalent to 32 micro-inch finish, or

better), within the dimensions and tolerancesgiven by RENK and free of burr or any roughspots.After removing the upper part of the housing (2)and the bearing liner (12 and 13) the interior ofthe housing and the running surfaces of the linerare to be cleaned thoroughly and checked forany damage caused in transit.With the shaft slightly, locate the bearing baseinto the mounting recess of the machine endshield and bolt into position.Apply oil to spherical seats in the housing baseand the shaft and rotate the bottom liner half(12) into position. Special care must be taken sothat the axial surfaces of the locating bearing arenot damaged.After the split faces of the bottom liner half andthe housing base are aligned, lower the shaftinto place. With a slight hammer blow againstthe housing base settle the liner into its seatingso that the liner axis and shaft axis are parallel.The slight hammer blow produces a highfrequency vibration which reduces the staticfriction between the liner and the housing andallows the correct adjustment of the liner. Theself-alignment feature of the bearing is tocompensate for normal shaft deflection during

the assembling procedure only.The loose oil ring is installed next. The ring mustbe handled with special care as safe operationof the bearing is also dependent on the effectiveand safe functioning of the oil ring. The boltsmust be tightly fastened. Split misalignmentmust be avoided and any burrs or edgescarefully removed in order to ensure smoothrunning of the ring. In any maintenance caremust be taken that the ring is not distorced andits geometrical shape is maintained.The outside of the two liner halves is stampedwith identification numbers or marks near the

split line. Make sure that these marks align andthe split faces are clean when placing the topliner half into position. Incorrect fitting may leadto heavy damage to the bearing liners.Check to ensure that the loose oil ring can stillrotate freely on the shaft. With the top liner halfin place, install the seal on the flange side (seeparagraph "Shaft Seals").After coating the split faces with a nonhardeningsealing compound, place the housing cap intoposition. Care must be taken that the seal fitsproperly into the groove. Ensure also that theantirotation pin is seated without any contactwith the corresponding hole in the liner.

NOTE: Housing or liner may beinterchanged as completeassemblies only. Individual halvesare not interchangeable.

4.2.2.4.Setting of thermal protections (PT100)

Each bearing is fitted with a Pt100 temperaturedetector installed directly in the bearing linernear the point where the load is applied. Thisdevice must be connected to a controllingpannel with the purpose of detecting overheatingand protect the bearing when operating underhigh temperature.

IMPORTANT: The following temperature mustbe set on the bearing protecting system:ALARM 100 CTRIPPING OFF 120 C

4.2.2.5. Water cooling system

When using water cooling system, the oilresevoir at the bearing is equipped with acooling coils through which the water circulates.This circulating water must present at thebearing inlet a temperature smaller or equal to

the ambient one in order to make the coolingpossible.The water pressure must be 0.1 bar and thewater flow must be 0.7 L/s. Ph must be neutral.

NOTE: When connecting thecooling coils, leaks in or on thebearings housing and oil reservoirmust be avoided so that lubricatingoil is not contaminated.

4.2.2.6. Lubrication

The oil change of the bearings must be effectedevery 8000 operating hours, or every time the oil

modifies its characteristics. Viscosity and oil Phmust be checked periodically.

Oil level must be checked daily which must be kept approximately at the center of the oil level sight glass.

The bearing must be filled with the prescribedtype of oil through the oil port after removing thepipe plug.All holes and threads not used are to be closedby pipe plugs. Also check all connections for oilleaks.

Filling the bearing with lubricant beyond themiddie of the oil sight glass (II) does not impairthe function of the bearing, but there is apossibility that excess oil may leak out throughthe shaft seals.

IMPORTANT:The cares taken with bearinglubrication will determine the life forsuch bearings as well as theasurance of motor operation. For

this reason, it is essential to follow theserecommendations:

- The oil selected must have a viscositysuitable for the bearing operating temperature.This must be checked during eventual oilchange or during periodical maintenances.- If the bearing is filled with oil bellow the

required oil level, or if the oil level is notchecked periodically, insufficient lubricationmay lead to damage to the bearing liner. Theminimum oil level is reached when the oil can

 just be seen in the oil sight glass when themachine is not in operation.

4.2.2.7. Shaft seals

The two halves of the floating labyrinth seal areheld together by a garter spring. They must beinserted into the groove of the carrier ring insuch a way that the stop pin is always in thecorresponding recess in the upper half of thehousing or carrier ring. Incorrect installationdestroys the seal.

The seal is to be carefully cleaned and coatedwith a nonhardening seating compound on thefaces in contact with the grooves. The drainholes in the lower part of the seal must be clean

and disobstructed. When installing the bottom

half of the seal, press it lightly against theunderside of the shaft.An additional sealing is installed inside the motorto prevent sugging of oil due to low pressuregenerated by the motor cooling system.

4.2.2.8. Operation

The operation of motors fitted with sleevebearings is similar to motors fitted with rollerbearings.It is recommended that the oil circulating systembe accompanied carefully and also the firsthours of operation.Before the start-up, check the following:- If the oil used has been prescribed

accordingly.- Characteristics of the lubricating oil.- Oil level.

- Alarm and tripping off temperatures set forthe bearings (100 C for alarm and 120 C fortripping off).

During the first start-up, check for vibrations ornoises. In case bearing operation is not quietand not uniform, motor is to be stopped at once.Motor must operate for several hours until thebearing temperature is fixed within the limitspreviously indicated. If a temperatureoverheating occurs, motor must be stoppedimmediately and the temperatures detectorschecked.When bearing operating temperature is reachedcheck for any oil leakage by the plugs joints orby the shaft end.

4.3. AIR GAP CHECKING (Large ODPmotors)

After disassembly and assembly of the motor itis necessary to check the air gap measurementbetween the stator and the rotor by usingappropriate gauges. The gap variation at anytwo vertically opposite points must be less than10% of the average air gap measurement.

4.4. SLIP RINGS (For slip ring motors)

Rings must be accurately centered as at highspeed the mechanical vibrations cause contactfaults, which in turn cause sparking. Rings mustalso be kept clean and polished.As a general rule, cleaning should be donemonthly in order to remove the dustaccumulated between the rings (see item 4.10).Stained or slightly rough ring surfaces can bepolished with fine sandpaper. Oval or roughsurfaced rings will require machining andrepolishing to avoid wear problems to brushes

and brush-holders.

4.5. BRUSH HOLDERS

Brush holders must be set radially to the slip

ring and adjusted approximately 4mm awayfrom the contact surface to avoid brushrupture or injury (Fig. 4.4).

4.6. BRUSHES (For slip ring motors)

There is a factory-specified brush type for eachelectric motor fitted with slip rings.

In case motor is operating below its rated output(low load) or intermittent load, the set of brushes(brush type and quantity) must be adjusted tothe actual operating conditions, avoiding in thisway motor damage.This adjustment must be done with the help ofWeg Máquinas Ltda.

Never use assorted brushes of different types onthe same rings.Any change of brush type must be authotized byWEG Máquinas Ltda, as different brushes cause

performance alterations to the machine inoperation.Brushes should be constantly checked duringoperation. Any brush presenting signs of wearshould be exceeding the mark indicated figure4.5, immediately replaced.

At the time of replacement and wheneverfeasible, all brushes should be replaced. Havingreplaced the first one, the second brush shouldbe replaced after a suitable running-in-period.Replacement brushes should be sanded to setperfectly on the ring surface curvature (min.75%). On machines that always rotate in thesame direction, the brushes should be set in asingle direction only. During the backwardmovement of the shaft the brushes must belifted (fig.4.6)

4.7.2. OPERATION

Brush position or through a signal coming fromthe CCE switch which indicates the brushposition, totally lowered.In case the signal is not indicating the brush

position totally lowered, motor can not be startedbefore adjusting the commanding switch to theposition ofbrushes totally lowered.This can be done manually through the flywheel(7), operating the lever (8) or automaticallyoperating the brake motor (9). If the manualsystem(7) is used, the lever (8) returnsautomatically to the previous position operatingthe brake motor (9). Under this condition(brushes totally lowered), the rings (5) are notshort-circuited, allowing in this way a seriesconnection of the external resistances (rheostat)

with the rotor winding through the brushes (6).NOTE: Perform the commanding tests with the

complete liftable brush holder systembefore running the motor under load.

4.7.2.2. PROCEDURE AFTER MOTORSTARTING:

At the moment motor has reached its ratedspeed, the short-circuit procedure of thecollector rings must be started, operating thelifting and short-circuit device (1), on the reserveway, through the brake motor (9), or manuallythrough the flywheel (7).The short-circuit is done through the slidebrushing (2) which holds the silver contacts (3).Furtherly, the brush lifting mechamism (4) isoperated.When brushes are totally lifted, the device isautomatically switched-off through the CCDswitch.

NOTE 1: The automatic brush lifting system isprovided with an overload protection

system for the operation brake motor (9),

through the torque switches for overloadswitching off during lowering (CLE) or lifting ofbrushes (CLD).

NOTE 2: Before motor start up, make sure CLD,CLE, CCD and CCE switches are correctly

connected to the panel.

NOTE 3: When one of the CLE or CLD switchesoperate, the rense of the system must beavoided before checking the reason they haveoperated

4.7.4. DISASSEMBLY:

For the disassembly of the liftable brush holder,proceed in the reserve way in relation toassembly procedures.

4.7.5. ADJUSTMENT OF THE BRUSHLIFTING SYSTEM:

1.Turn the lifting disc up to the short-circuitposition and then turn it a bit more to release therolls to avoid unneccessary thrusts on the rollerbearings.

2. Fasten the adjusting bolt up to the backstopdisc and then lock the adjusting bolt.

3. Turn the lifting disc up to the position of non

short-circuit (brushes lowered) and repeat thesame procedure carried out for the short circuitposition.

4.8. DRYING OF THE WINDINGS

It is recommended that this task be undertakencarefully and by qualified personnel. The rate oftemperature rise should not exceed 5 C per hourand the winding should not be heated up tomore than 150 C.

Excessive temperature as well as too quicktemperature rise can generate steams whichdamage the windings. During the dryingprocess, the temperature should be controlledcarefully and the insulation resistance should bemeasured at regular intervals.In the beginning, the insulation resistance willdecrease due to the temperature increase, but itwill increase during the drying process.The drying process should be continued untilsucessive measurements of the insulationresistance show a constant insulation resistancewhich should be higher than the minimum value

specified, as indicated in item 2.3.3.It is important to provide a good ventilationinside the motor during the drying processassuring that the moisture is removedeffectively.

4.9. DESMANTLING AND REASSEMBLY

4.9.1. " MASTER" line

A) Squirrel-cage rotor:

. DRIVE-END:

1) Remove the heat exchanger (if any).

2) Remove the temperature detectors fromthe bearing (if any).

3) Unscrew the bolts which fasten thebearing assembly.

4)Remove the external bearing caps (forroller bearing motors).

4.1. For ball bearing motors, follow theprocedures described in item 4.2.2.2.5)Unscrew the bolts of the endslield. Afterbeing removed, the bolts should be screwedinto the extra thread holes of the removedendshields in order to force its removing. Toprevent the rotor falling onto the rotor, providea support for it.6)Remove the bearing(s) (for roller bearingmotors).7)Remove the internal bearing cap (for rollerbearing motors).

A furtheressential factor is the prompt attention to anyabnormal situation such as vibrations, shaftknocks, declining insulation resistance, smokeor fire, sparking or unusual slip ring or brushwear, sudden changes of bearing temperature.When failures of an electric or mechanicalnature arise, the first step to be taken is to stopthe motor and perform a subsequentexamination of all mechanical and electricalparts of the installation.In the event of having a fire, the motor should bedisconnected from the power supply, which isnormally done by turning off the respectiveswitches.In case of starting of fire inside the motor itself,steps should be taken to retrain and sufocate it

by covering the ventilation openings. Toextinguish a fire, dry chemical or CO²extinguishers should be used. Never use water.

6.1. COMMON FAILURES ON INDUCTION

MOTORS

Motors built by WEG Máquinas Ltda arenormally designed for Class F insulation (155 C)and for ambient temperatures up to 40 C(asindicated on the motor nameplate). Most windingfailures occur when temperature limits, due tocurrent overload, are surpassed throughout thewinding or even in only portions thereof. Thesefailures are identified by the darkenning orcarbonizing of the wire insulation.

6.1.1. Short between turns

A short circuit between turns can be aconsequence of two coincident insulationdefects, or the result of defects arisingsimultaneously on two adjacent wires.In some cases, the three-phase currentimbalance can be so insignificant that the motorprotective device fails to react. A short circuitbetween turns, and phases to ground due toinsulation failure is rare, and even so, it normallyoccurs during the early stages of operation.

6.1.2. Winding failures

a) One winding phase burnt

This failure occurs when a motor runs wired indelta and current fails in one power supplyconductor. Current rises from 2 to 2.5 times inthe remaining winding with a simultaneous dropof speed. If the motor stops, the current will

increase from 3.5 to 4 times its rated value. Inmost cases, this defect is due to lack of aprotective switch, or because this switch hasbeen set too high.b) Two winding phases burnt

This failure occurs when current fails in onepower supply conductor and the motorwinding is star-connected. One of thewinding phases remains currentless while theother absorb the voltage and carries anexcessive current. The slip almost doubles.

c)Three winding phases burnt- Probable cause 1: Motor protected only by

fuses. An overload on the motor will be thecause of the trouble. As a consequence,progressive carbonizing of the wires and

insulation will generate a short betweenturns, or a short against the frame. Aprotective switch placed before the motorwould easily solve this problem.

- Probable cause 2: Motor incorrectly connected.- For example: a motor with windings

designed for 220/380 V is connectedthrough a stat-delta switch of 380 V. Thedrawn current will be so high that thewinding will burn out in a few seconds if thefuses or a protective switch incorrectly setfail to react promptly.

- - Probable cause 3: The star-delta switch is

not commutated and the motor continues to

run for a certain time connected to the starunder overload conditions. As it onlydevelops 1/3 of its torque, the motor cannotreach rated speed. The increase of slipresults in higher ohmic losses arising fromthe Joule effect. As the stator current,consistent with the load, may not exceed therated value for delta connection, theprotective switch will not react. Consequentto increased winding and motor losses themotor will overheat and the winding will burnout.

- Probable cause 4: Failures from this causeare caused by thermal overload, due toexcessive starts under intermittent operationor to an overly long starting cycle.

- The perfect functioning of motors operatingunder these conditions is only assured whenthe following values are taken into account.

a) number of starts per hourb) starting with or without loadc) mechanical brake or current inversionc) acceleration of load connected to motor

shaftd) load torque related to speed during

acceleration and braking.

The continuous effort withstood by the higherrotor during intermittent starting brings aboutlosses which provoke overheating. Under certaincircumstances, there is a possibility that thestator winding be subject to damage with the

motor stopped as a result of the heating on themotor.

6.1.3. Rotor failures (squirrel cage)

If a motor running under load conditionsproduces a noises of varied intensity anddecreasing frequency while the load isincreased, the reason, in most cases, will be anunsymmetrical rotor winding.In squirrel-cage motors the cause will nearlyalways be a break in one or more of the rotorbars; simultaneously, periodical stator currentfluctuations may be recorded. As a rule, thisdefect appears only in molded or die castaluminum cages. Failures due to spot heating inone or another of the bars in the rotor care areidentified by blue coloration at the affectedpoints.If there are failures in various contiguous bars,vibrations and shuddering can occur. When therotor core gets a blue or violet coloration, it is asign of overloading.This can be caused by overly high slip, by toomany starts or overlong starting cycles. This

failure can also come from insufficient powersupply voltage.

6.1.4. Slip ring rotor failures

A break in one phase of the rotor winding isnoticed by a strong noise that varies accordingto the slip and, in addition, stronger periodicalstator current fluctuations occur.It is possible, but rarely so, that a rupture couldhave occured in the connection between thewinding and the slip ring. However, it isadvisable to first check if there is a break in therheostat starter connection, or even in the partitself.

6.1.5. Short between turns on slip ringmotors

This abnormal situation occurs only underextremely rare circumstances. Depending on themagnitude of the short circuit, the start can beviolent even if the rheostat is at the first tap ofits starting position. In this case, heavy startingcurrents are not carried through the rings and sono burn marks will be noticed on them.

6.1.6. Bearing failures

Bearing failure are the most frequent causes for

delayed breakdowns.The most common reasons for this failure areidentified as excessive vibration, incorrectoperation, bad alignment, unbalanced couplings,excessive radial and/or axial loads.Check item 4.2 for bearing maintenance.

6.1.7. Shaft breakings

Although bearings traditionally constitute theweakest. part, and the shafts are designed withwide safety margins, it is possible that a shaft

may break by fatigue from bending stresscaused by excessive belt tension. In mostcases, breakings occur right behind the driveend bearing.As a consequence of alternating bending stressinduced by a rotating shaft, breakings travelinwards from the outside of the shaft until thepoint of rupture is reached when resistance ofthe remaining shaft cross-section no longersuffices. At this point, avoid additional drilling onthe shaft (fastening screw holes) as suchoperations tend to cause stress concentration.

The replacement of only one or two belts of abelt drive system is frequently a cause of shaftbreakings, besides being an incorrect practice.Any used and consequently stretched belts on adrive system, specially those closer to the motor,while new and unstretched belts are placed onthe same drive but farther from the bearing, cancause shaft stress.

6.1.8.Damage arising from poorly fittedtransmission parts or improper motor alignment

Damaged to bearing and breaking of shafts areoften resulted from inadequate fitting of pulley,couplings or pinions on the shaft.These parts "knock" when rotating. The defectcan be recognized by the scratches that appear

on the shaft or the eventual scalelike flaking ofthe shaft end. Keyways with edges pitted byloosely fitted keys can also cause shaft failures.Pooly aligned couplings cause knocks and radialand axial shaking to shaft and bearings. Within ashort while, these bad practices cause thedeterioration of the bearings and theenlargement of the bearing on the drive endside.In other cases, motor shaft can break.

These products, when operated under the conditions stipulated by WEG in the operating manual for suchproduct, are warranted against defects in workmanship and materials for twelve (12) months from start-update or eighteen (18) months from manufacturer shipment date, whichever occurs first.However, this warranty does not apply to any product which has been subject to misuse, misapplication,
