PRELUDE 1. EXT. CARRIAGEWAY. PENDULA MANOR. MASQUERADE BALL. NIGHT. In darkest plight’s of love’s lost lease. Carriages of the night people came, their masquerade to seek. Affixed to nobility’s distress, pomp ambitions salt to taste. The extreme excesses of the hungry flesh to waste. Addressed to loose black cloaks that swirl and masks flattery to hid. One the same in groups they hung around. Terraces ebony mantles the watching ground. For who to see, and who has come the waiting be, just for me. Chattering reins and crunching hoofs, bold stallions did draw. Iron wheels with no repose. Scimitar wedges, dainty feet did step down, perfumes and ploy trimmed to the crown. And buckled boots noisy heavy plod, retreated the muddy softness of the sod. Upon polished marble did echo deep high throated laughter screams, about nothing being what it seems. With rigid movements gallant display, all did encroach upon the pass of day. Despite curtains of the clothes, knowing each others fatal dispose. As coming and going, did the trenched rims make. Squeaks and clatter of the tight springs grate. Lord and Lady Pendula of the Manor, to greet. Newcomers, naïve green, through the booming doors, where glimmering smiles of stone gargoyles blind horns vibrate. 1

Beyond blazing lights and tasty smells ,music’s uplift for pretty feet, excitements trance to meet. Bedpans the cold rooms great beds to heat, with servants in disarray, dressed undressed practical for the fray. Plebeian obedient to the least command obey. Regardless of the night of day. Through awnings spiked bushed sheaths, shadow blooms did silently hang into the garden of love. Where soliloquy for the unfound stilled the savage breast. Noises empty sound, did hear the buzz of gossips important ground. From groups still perched to wait about. Fatigues nuptial bliss the bore, fed upon the endless cry for more. Like with like to keep awake and in trance for ever partake. Buck and drake. Bitch and mare, triangles in the elusive fare. Pretties miss and pretties old, all in line out in the cold. Masked eyes, implants to flash and make promising statements without a crash. Shapeless blades large belly bottle at the pump, expectant raptures to empty desires sleep with the hump. Of fashions affectations aching, to act the part of ever awaking. Weak hearts to shout the lumbering gout. Leads the way to a night of amorous pout. So in ribbon discourse entrances refine the perfection of the swirl. And backs to late comers, the drift. Sailing cloaks the rippling pools to shift. Maids and damsels fluff, olds and weepy milady stuff. Lavished Manor entrance with the scents, accompaniments greetings endless swagger. Disgruntled the upkeep of the nagger. 2

Echo’s tunnel down refinements halls, as falling ivy leaves the warm nights calls. Decadents libertines last, in dribbles still wait to make their fast. Until few silhouette’s the shadows take, and verbal plight rations the tongues of the fake. Puffed up peer grope one’s way, relations party left to stay. So wait’s the time to begin. 3

2 . EXT. MANOR BALL ENTRANCE NIGHT ______________________________________ Enter. LORD FOUTTAS. LORD RULLA. BARON RUSCUS. EARL STIPA. SIR NICO. SIR OSPER. SIR REECH. CAPTAIN HAKONECH. Gentlemen attending. RUSCUS Dreams the dreamer, apothecary physician, duck quaking leech still. Alone I spy yonder. What does this Duke not afford his inheritance state. To fumble life’s empty longings away. Rambling in the darkness of his thorny bush head, for something that will never be. Plague on the dog fox. FOUTTA Someone lurks within I’ll be bound. For his likes live in silence of their own apparitions. Somewhere a hen skirt lurks, disguised as a fine young lady, who in neat cold storage has him placed beyond the human race. RUSCUS For deeper freezing, milord. Pox slime on this upstarts indifference, my blood runs cold with his ignoring adversity. 4

Page 9: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Nay, I would say more, but my prime calls me to enjoy this night, and not weep over what has never been. OSPER Worded well. If speaking of yourself my noble trout. For which holds the greatest blame ? Your eternal lose, or his never gain. RUSCUS Varlet, mouthed Clown away. Speak you now of piety. The same. Begone, or my edge will your riddle tongue cut, not play. I speak for all concerning this climate Duke, neither man or boy, who would have us believe he is better isolated from our likes. His hermitage I cannot bear. OSPER Methinks, I hear the voice of the green envy vixen, spouting as a big fish girl. RUSCUS Enough, clodhopper wretch, you have gone too far. Before this dawn I will your dangle mangle. 5

Page 10: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

OSPER Loath sir, for pointing out clearly the nuts of this matter. I think not a vesper for your uncouth threats. This good lord, you do so abuse, carries gentle clout with wealthy arms and cautions sobriety. Despise you such possessions as these, to confirm the tyranny of your inability to truly feel. RUSCUS Speak on clearly, eunuch Clown. Let the lucidity of your insults prose embed our ears. Until the dawn awakening, you will sleep no more. Dewed flower and blood will you adore. Now, why dwell with us further dishonourable gent, when yonder poses your idol companion of minds weakest dent. Answer me that. Prattle wit. OSPER And answer, I shall sir. By the way of my services bond, I am obligated to defend any who cannot for themselves speak. So by guile and humour good, I balance all woes voices as I should. If fault there be in me, then it is for yourself I plea. 6

Page 11: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

FOUTTA Cease this upstart banter, or the desires of our wantoness will be soaked by our fight. Calm yourselves to listening, does not the music give you sensual call and the cloaked legs open to fall. My thirst awaits my spirits. I will away. What good fellows would follow. Of these tribulations I need no further part to stay. Exit: LORD FOUTTA. SIR OSPER. CAPTAIN HAKONECH. RUSCUS ( angry with the remainder.) Pox. Pox, upon that charlatan leech. Strewth, is there no loyalty left after a spout off. Now my blades would abandon me. Purge this infidel, I will have my way with him now. No longer can I tolerate his silent trespass. Stand aside, no shadows will his comfort be. NICO Hold fast Lord this bewitched night, least we all put pleasure to flight. Let us our body’s wits release. For beholden a plan does to me occur, that would your Lordship favour before duals timeless savour. Bringing warrant to your esteem, for all to share by mockery’s hurtful scheme. Adding no more lustre to the dreamers abstract cause 7

Page 12: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

RUSCUS Speak then sir, between the breath of my anger and steaming violence. Hasten, or I will burst as with tigress hurt. NICO Gather closer, noble fellows, in the shade of this gargoyle prince, that I can enlighten in fashions worthy of this able plot. Prose I, this fortune that we with urgency quick, take pen to page and scribble forth a love note. RUSCUS Whores in hell ! What manner of madness do you, Judge, to my ears speak. Me thinks the Clown, Osper, has hold your tonsils weak. NICO O Lord, hard gather the stallions of your loins stirrup, pray hear me out. For the more imagined, the greater your gratification shall be. Let me prattle of this loving notes truth. For it will blanch your blow upon this sorcerer’s floozie. And our word. 8

Page 13: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

STIPA Your word. I’ll not be hog bound, to hammer this enmity into the ground. RULLA Spoken well knight. Clarify yourself Sir Judge, or be through, and let us have peace. NICO Vain eruptions interruptions, the volcano’s of this masquerade’s larva, do cock up your blood without hear me out kind gentlemen. A masterpiece is at foot, unequalled by any painter’s scrub. Let me touch the canvas of humours club. Harry your understanding quickly, before to late it be and our cockerel does crow before the bait. RUSCUS Speak on, if at urgency’s gate you would have us stand waiting. I grow weary to hear. NICO This love note we will have delivered, by a maid wench well versed in such intrigue. Whose body map knows well my wrap. 9

Page 14: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

REECH Here we go ! Clarity, does foresight to my ears, now steer. RUSCUS Then let this Judge, make it see before my rages fit. NICO Thank you that, trust, this man does say. My way will make these money’s play. RULLA Pay forth, least our interests wain the more. Music, drink, and skirting stands on this brink. NICO My listening time will save you, the indulgences of blotto’s empty memory blockages, from excesses body strain. And thanks, will surelly remain my fat. This physician Duke, will read of love’s smitten call. And from our verse, contemplate the food of beauty’s all. 10

Page 15: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

RUSCUS Of what lovely ladyship, I must presume she be. Do you intend to impose. To serve the wantings of this nosegay. None can the breadth and depth of endow know who can embraces bend, to trip before this quack fellows friend. NICO Ay, and none it shall be, for the ultimate pleasures of this rubs, revenging ploy. In sheltered bower garden beyond, where statues stone concealment decoy, a secret place we will allocate. Where our pigeon will alight, to meetings liason, with hungry heart bursting with seeds. Uplifted, reversing, to the treat of this glorious bitter sweet. For low, by the maid courier, gossip hints will she strew around, of who and how, and where and when. So all aristocracy of this masquerades lineage blessed. Will leave to stow within bush, and shrub, and garden’s night. To voyeur’s witness partake, the love stream of his foolish plight. RUSCUS Bids away. Now warm I to the possibilities of your relate, and in minds eye ahead, already enjoy. Except for the fault. 11

Page 16: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Where lies milady, to oblige with such a love toy. NICO Faint hearts haste, I could agree. STIPA This Judge, with all your glamoured charm, and endless bedding cheap, who rocks the foundation of the worn-out drunk, and debtor. Sleeps endless continuation, to leap. This, is where your plan lackadaisically lacks the lackey. The noble lady for the part, whose reputation cannot be blemished by such a fart. As well, my Lord has spoke, none does exist here, this night. RULLA Nay, or any other, I’ll be bound. NICO Then , undo the fetters of your brain, and wrap them about what remains. RUSCUS More riddles of the Clown. Enough, as far as it does 12

go, it goes well. Without a reputable lady attending, you might as well send NICO I read your pause as my own line. A smooth face without a beard , lips coloured to entrance the sight. Cloak, mask and feminine stir, all do contribute to this fop’s purr. Now know we all who is the one. STIPA Speak for yourself, for ignorant I remained be. Your words have no foot in the trough of my commonsense. NICO Aye kind sir, mores the pity. But in betrothal of our company bonded, this common pot does overflow with certainty. For look around. Speak I not, of yourself, who fit’s the plot. Come sir, do not any longer tarry. For time now is wasting for our bird to fly. RUSCUS Enough said. This motion is unanimously carried, or you kind Earl, will regret the day, and our displeasure inherit. Say no more. We will all away 13

and within depart, to seek out Bishop Beacon for the love note art. Exit All 3. EXT. PENDULA MANOR BALL GROUNDS. NIGHT ________________________________________________ Enter. DUKE ONO, the Physician, out of terrace shadows. Sits alone on a stone bench backed by the Garden. The lights of the Masquerade illuminate his expressions as the music drifts with his aspirations. ONO How move I this night’s enchantment of miracles, to rest in the slumber of my endless thoughts. Ever debating matters that contain no answers element. Except, to comfort myself by promises of clarifications celestial wit. For certain, while all things imperfect be. Within, must sleeping lie, the seeds of perfections certainty. No matter otherwise my struggle, no enlightenment comes from muddle. Until I do, in aloneness meditation sit, nothing worthy for me can fit. Distant others may see, and label me so. Whether such reasons, valuable being, I still cannot tell. 14

Page 19: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Or lack, even warrant. Since I wish no man or lady harms bludgeon. For all it would seem certain, are border bound by their own limitations dull lustre. Able only by endow, stream, river or even mere reflections puddle, a bridge to find. What, by fine station, rank and ability, has set me out as task. Devotions precious gain, by self drives holy pain. To register the truth of all matters, so no longer shy the rub. Hampered by not knowing cause, and reason why. And even the way, how to die. Talks my head within, by means of listen. So, the processed fountain of this persons mountain spring, falls to flow. Uncertainty, the smooth dam damps, as first, from my living well the open waters spread. By the sciences of my apothecary flood, for certain, nothing is certain. Even when the way would seem clear, there is that, that occurs to drown the cheer. Neither knowing or not knowing comes this sacred course. Delighting in the exactness of its driving force. So sneezes the wake, for pity sake. And labels it thus, to me as truth. Whose labourer I be. Daydreamer awake. As such the light of night, becomes the night of day, the same. Of my hearts longing, for a lady tender. None seems existing be, that is not by insights protective arm laid aside. For the sweet softness of loves lips and passions 15

caress. Feelings test, does fail. Reproachful of myself, as lacking what others so easily profit by. It transposes, that my shields, have more than justly acted. On hold, the watch, and wait is sufficient to each passing day. Interuptions occupations kindly bower bringing no additions to the most important centre of my failings. Without a betrothed, I am the unhappiest of men. Indeed, if man I be, since no lady has stroked my certainty. Yet, nothing can I do to make amends, but ponder endlessly and wait. Aye, to pray to myself, the enigma to answer, in reality. Unrest to cease, happiness and peace granted. So be my burdens weight, until at last the golden gate. Speaking. I have spoken well to this garden of night. Now upon this bench of stone I will listen to the music within. Lift my spirits and lighten. The masquerade of no interest leaving my nobles to their own problems handle, allows this fop to ramble. Seated aside, while knowing beyond uncertainty, what is one for you. Is one for me. ( he takes the night air) Sweet wafts the breath of honeysuckles perfume. Twinkles high stars, silver light. Moon’s floating globe, does shine so bright. Upon clouds sea of waves, to sight. 16

Page 21: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

No canopy rest for me to touch. By the wand of beauty’s magical hand, the gardens purity land. Were my heart open as to show, and no more lines upon my face to grow. So easy would it be. But words, floating moon upon the willow musk rose stream. Change forms endless realms scheme. Searching in the silver light, mirrors reflected sun to deceive. Alas, so much lost and never found. That I must content myself with the ground. Healing balms, and library of mercy’s psalms. Now. Someone does approach as searching. No distraction noise must I make, least I put fears ghost to haunt the suddenness of this domino persons startled nerves. Lo, the figure has seen me clearly, and approaches with duty’s certainty. Nay, of the body language emulated, I must show cordiality, and respect even though suspicious it most definitely be. 4. EXT PENDULA MANOR BALL GROUNDS NIGHT _____________________________________________ Enter. PHOFIA, a waiting- gentle maid. ( while concealed behind bushes watching artfully is BARON RUSCUS, and his attending gentlemen. NICO. REECH. RULLA. STIPA.) 17

Page 22: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

PHOFIA ( with coquettish guile to Ono ) My Lord, sir, forgive my interrupting your contemplations. But, do I address. Duke Ono. Physician Apothecary to Her Royal Highness. Escallonia. ONO Maid. I am he, and I forgive your intrusion. State your purpose. Please accept my apology if my manner offends you. PHOFIA Nay sir, you cause me no distress. The very reverse in fact, to my expect. ONO You had cause to doubt the worthiness of your intention. PHOFIA No sir, but you are too clever for my humble personage. I do only the bidding of milady mistress. 18

Page 23: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ONO Then it is this noble lady who has created your misinterpretation. PHOFIA Nay sir, now I am confused. Your insight increases my uncertainty. I was directed to give this letter to your very person, and be certain that it was to your very hand given. ONO Then so be it, since I wish you no more embarrassment. Except, what name does the courier bear. PHOFIA Please sir, meaning no offence, your hand, that I may personally dispense , and be away. ONO Cupid’s darts. Not before your name has my ears entered. Privy, I ask you not to remove your mask, but only that which accompanies the nature of your voice. 19

Page 24: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

PHOFIA Pray kind sir, I implore. Do not press me further thus. my mistress forbade me to speak and answer any questions. Just my duty to perform, and I have miserably failed. ONO Forgive my inconsideration for holding you further hence. Here is my hand. Transport your errand. PHOFIA Thank you, sir. Here is your letter. Forgive me thus. (Phofia kisses the Duke’s cheek, and runs off into the darkness) ONO I must declare, I am touched by this gentle maids manner. Her kiss upon my cheek lay. So. Ay, it has no burn, of which I am yet aware. ( he opens the seal, and reads. Deaf to those hiding in the bushes.) 20

5. EXT PENDULA MANOR BALL GROUNDS NIGHT ______________________________________________ Enter. BARON RUSCUS and attending gentlemen, speaking from shrubbery concealment, out of earshot of DUKE ONO. RUSCUS Rascal fishes swear. Well goes your plan, sir, upon this dish. Anger, I do concede, seeing this charlatans grovel. Even tinge I pity’s morsel for his surprise. How foolish we mortal men be, before the hopes of hairs delicate cup. Bait my breath now, I fear to disturb, and ruin. This matter must run its undaunted course. Withdrew I all my tainted doubts noble Judge, for certainty’s success has earned you, fames infamy. NICO Praise indeed O Baron. This art of deceptions exercise wit. Is to fully enjoy, and empty to quit. Savouring each moments mouth, with cunnings enterprise sauce. REECH Harkening magnification, I hear the heart of our 21

bigwig louse, trapped in the tube of our experimentation. Loud, to shuttering sweet music’s gayness. Note his eyes gleam bright. And fidgeting hands slobber, as he reads. RULLA Aye, reads. And reads. And reads again. Lo, rejections hunger crave. My ears do weary before his starving blink. So many words, the few to absorb. Multiplied thus, to make this nights snuff. RUSCUS Nay, kind sirs, now we can readily agree upon our pleasures to come. With thumbs down to the sun. His very bones must surely crumble, with contemplations spritely bumble. And marrows jelly burning, turn to imaginary embers of aspirations ludicrous mood, meeting. But enough of possibilities, this and there. We can quietly steal away content. Ridicules competency nest to bare and spread the words, that we wear. Our chest cards held tight within. That all shall know the time. Aye, the place too. For merriments laughter to disgrace. And finish this shrewd physicians swollen swell. Before those that matter, that can tell. 22

Page 27: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

STIPA The good for you with no distain. The bad for me who has lost his name. A lady’s troth still does not hang prettily. Fool am I to go along, and perform my role. Except firm recompense, there be no other final persuasion. NICO Thou art timbers finest grain. And for certain will long remain. Firm and stalwart to the end, illustrious brother, comrade, friend. Stars academy frame all set to make. RUSCUS Hush now. Although noise matters not, since no sound can penetrate the fog of this lovesick brain. We will away. Once inside to abandon, and ensure that all at random, shall by fever gossip, attend the premiere of his demise. Exit. Baron Ruscus, and his companions. Sir Nico. Sir Reech. Lord Rulla. Earl Stipa. DUKE ONO on the outskirts of the Garden, with Pendula Manor alive with lights, dancing, music and merriment. Reads his letter. 23

Page 28: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ONO Soothe, I read yet again this intrigues mystery. For pity sake, nothing has ever in my hand brought such favours apprehensions mix. Joy and suspicion here unite. * (letter) Beloved, Duke Ono. So gentle. No longer can I contain the pain of my lovesick heart for thee At the chime of three. This night, in maize centre. Just you, and me. For knowing as we do. Trusts compassion must bring us hence. Fine lady, yours. * And still yet, I read again. For this hands delight has put my defence to flight. Who can I reproach for such an opportune approach. O serenity, without a name, who can bear the stigma of the blame. But lo, she who in liason sweet. Promises the arbour of the meet. By joy, there is no way I cannot attend. If sincerity here be, a pure heart must call. Answer I must, in spite of impossibility’s fall. For what living sickness fiend, would be so cruelly impoverished, to hurt the likes of me. Who bears nothing malice intentionally. 24

Page 29: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

What tricksters shadow. Nay, on such a downward path I will not tread. Well able be I to defend myself. No need for companions strong arm wealth. So speak I to all the lonely, lovesick calls unanswered, and broken promised bed. Fine lady, yours, to be. Knowing as she speaks, our eyes have met bearing love to see. Nay, by faith, no such encounter has ever been to cast these aspirations. Counsel myself I must. And by such counsel advance into hopes of my eternal dwelling. Confident that this be my beloved’s tender voice. Within, loves own night garden, will I roam, to find the peace of my hearts home. Idling away the hours. Until yonder tower clock strikes. Three. Nothing ventured is for certain, nothing gained. So learning truth by seeking, can be obtained by a peaking. Or, if my cowardly flight wears no mask to hid, centre will bravely be my task. Lead on gay music of the night. For I am fit, and able for loves great fight. Exeunt 25

My feet aged, must rest alack, afore pleasant dancing become my forte. Now observe I myself, in others pranks, enjoy, remainders none reality ploy. Having so said, all is but a dream misshapen spent and these yawning draps of time, eventually rent. Speaks the rondo music now to me clearly, its melodies, like seasons of the mind, endlessly changing. Ladies prithee welcome to add your verses wandering to my purses stronger coffer. So I can elaborate my fatigue with greater ease. CORDYLN Cleverly reacted are this, Lady Ussa and me. To discover afoot from gossips free spillage, news concerning your Physicians, amorous repertoire unfolding. USSA This very night for all to share, as display. A suspicious liaison to our desertion. Cleverly laid, by diversion. Come what may, we are uncertain. ESCALLONIA Speak you of my Duke. Many would defame his healing cheer, because of my faiths patronage. And, so by doing, demean. lives long before his understood time. Ingredient for sure enemies, who upon muses weak graces lay foundation, as well sciences breach, and even clergy’s abstract demise. How speak you of this Bishop, ear cocked listening, anxiously waiting. ( Embarrassed Bishop Deacon, hastily moves away to Baron Ruscus.) DEACON Caution sir, me thinks, High Highness, has with guiles long experience, rumbled. ESCALLONIA Speak up, Bishop. For my ears are sure, not soar. Don’t under cuff mumble to the floor of deceit. How say you of religions advance, as futures face more clarity shows, the real nature of God’s nose. DEACON Blessed Highness, speak wearily, not in vain, for the Lord hears our ever shame. ( Cordylin aside to Ussa ) CORDYLIN That’s for sure, as make it. His as well the poor. 28

Now Ladies, speak to me of pleasant things, and let me mirth’s laughter take, without drink. And silly hyena noises, loud to hold my pulpit. USSA The fare food of uncertainty that to our ears comes, must we feel, you fill with details to concede. For reputations, pity sake. CORDYLIN This then being the likes of the best gossip we could find. ESCALLONIA Closer to me drew ladies, from spying horns uplifted blight, and preach to me of this rite. ( Aside .Escallonia. Cordyline and Ussa speak quietly of the Duke Ono gossip .) Baron RUSCUS converses with Bishop DEACON. Sir NICO. Earl STIPA and Sir REECH. DEACON Her Highness, speaks out blasphemy to the Lord. We are righteous to improvise our just pressure, for the pleasure of exposure. Duke Ono has addled her brain with his unbridled thinking, and we have become victims of shame. NICO With trials discourse, and tribulations, the extent cannot be fit to reign. RUSCUS Hold these words steady, Sir Judge. Until proven such deliberations will put us all to sword. Lord Foutta suspects our manner. And no domino hiding, no matter how smart, can from, Her Highness, disguise. STIPA Forsoothe, I fear now this intrigue does jeopardize my life’s feast. 31

REECH Science and Church are agreed to cut this cake together in two, upon this moutain cap. Show fear now, sir. And you will surelly before time, die. RUSCUS My Sir, perform your part well to this night’s bell, and a hero’s story will you long tell. STIPA Methinks better, most surelly, that this bells toll will sound in hell’s refuse dump, with science and religion. Ay, and Art , and politic’s, and all the rest, towixt the flames making. REECH Nonsense speaks, a frightened tongue no more relate. Obey the laws formulas, with silences chaotic integrity shake. RUSCUS Depart now, bold comrades swear. Her Highness’s eye, does a hawk look from power’s chair. I wish to know no talon, by her prey. Obviously, now well 32

Ay, if charms chance, as Bishop’s rod strikes, opportunity to serve our prance. Exit. Baron Ruscus with his followers. ESCALLONIA ( calls Lord and Lady Pendula ) How goes the masquerade, my Lord. Better that if truth were expected. I’ll warrant. PENDULA Your Highness, illustrious, sponsorial charity, exportations presence, fills my Manor with Jove’s cordiality. Sensations touch, ever to tempt, awaiting. To mention is my command. The game, one for all to play. Each turn a door to romp behind. Seek the finders mask, to blind. ESCALLONIA Ay. Ay. TATRA Your Highness, for bitterness, the night air draughts, will not suit the bones. ESCALLONIA Lady Tatra, my dear, old friend, your consideration marks you well. I may be old, but I am fair. I really need not the clumbersome chair. Ruling thrones, are but seats, uncomfortable to wear. When best things spoken as we would walk. Or is it lie. Nay, here my head has gone astray, to my brow. Speak to me of your daughter, lady fair. Is she here presented, where thus, do I glimpse her. 34

For not saying, is our blame. 36

His insights into the brain and mind, no rival on this mortal earth, can find. Only they who recommend and steer, will bring him nativity’s good cheer. Now ladies, attend me from this seat. I will with care approach, and rescue her from, Milord Pendula’s fat stomach tread. ESCALLONIA ( speaking to Pendula ) Recall you passed days so sweet, when all these dancing floors we did sweep. So faint our ebbing sound, when life was so easy to be found. PENDULA Recollections are the meanings of every day. My memory never forgets the larks, the ambling jaunts of the sparks. RUSCUS Your Highness , does me great favour. ESCALLONIA Mark it,well, my lord. Before understandings tilt. Nothing escapes me in this country. Where , only for peace and happiness, must we all aim to dwell. Without, our inner heads controlling wranglers. About ambitions, swollen power sore. Or, reductions inhospitality of the dislike. RUSCUS I do pray. Your Highness addresses me as one unfit and disloyal. How comes about this unexpected foil folly. ESCALLONIA By truths condensation of the facts, bandied abridge. For surety, entering a stranger to the eerie worship of dark plots. Know you well, to what reference make I. RUSCUS Direction, would help my dull wit, reply. Clown. For this prop’s purler, is for your crown. HAKONECH Are we not of poor wit to laugh. Doubtless, my vest fat, would rumble with the ingenuity of finality’s jest. FOUTTA Think you not of the season’s fair blush, but tread through winds time with the singing thrush. For yonder repaired, sits an arbor. FOUTTA Then be ignorant no more a moment. Come closer and examine the bower, where myrtles and musk rose do intertwine. Feast full this banquets awe, there is nothing else greater, that’s for sure. Lift the curtains skirt steep, for your eyes to take a peek at at the cornucopia of Jove’s tender grace. OSPER I approach. Soothe, I will not anticipate the contents from my nobles mind captive. HAKONECH Come Sir. Off your breeches. For the leading role this costume you will now wear. OSPER Gawd, it is a nightshirt. FOUTTA Aye, with finest laces embroidery, and best measures trim. I can with this lantern faintly see, without gropings bouncing trip. Something certain must guide my feet. By windings paths, I do journey for a maze. Aye, to find the maze of lifes burden. No moon above does illuminate. White fleece, the satins of clouds precious shimmer only. To lead my way. And on distants note, I have heard the stroke of 12. For 12 to 1. Alas, still 2 to come. For 1 and 2 make 3. Numbers, heavy labour for you, fair lady, and me. Passing, I would sit quiet beneath this tree, and contemplate what could be, yet to come. Which by expectations dice, is never how it will be. But nay, were I to nod, for time has no chair. Dews awakening, could bring me dawn. Then lost, and never to know tenderness of the maze’s anxiety. Wearisome, yet pleased. Abide I must, awake til 3. To allow plenty, a gap betwixt beta and gamma. Help, to make my stealthy step, not late. Fortune has already showed its knowing hand. For their sits a sign, with arrows clear pointing band. ( ONO indicates a sculptured stone.) I do read. To Maze. So certain, directions path I have found. Only times remnant now, to wait around. Fine lady, yours. This night has truelly brought a worthy cause. ( Duke ONO stops abruptly, having lost complete sight of Lady Duotavia ) Halloo, what madness is now folding. One moment all is clear, and full of potential cheer. How gone. My lady, has disappeared to invisibilities wretched sight only. And I am by cause, made to doubt the vision of my own insights, outward release. A prison person do I be. This cannot without illusion occur. For no more dimensions exist. My senses fail me, a trick of light, a wave of cloud mixed with melodies superstition. How could I be, by such shackles led. Still, I do insist, I saw a face so rare in moonlights silver whisper stare. So much mine, that for soothe, no elemental phenomena can fool me. That she is not the truth, personified. Where then, is my fair lady, now. Upon this unblessed spot can I only stand, and reach out for a helping hand. O moon, whose searching light, did expose my beloveds sight. Press away with hopes grace, the clouds of your repression that arthur’s camelot can decay, and bring us wealth everyday. Without a warning, warming course to hearse, the consultant undertakers, not immortality. Dig deep. Away the fluffy gases steam for travel. And reveal to me. What. Is for certain. 60

Wait I now, for your shining. Responses too, from stars angel diadems, about your throne. Come to her fair, and be proven prone. ( ahead in a leafy dell, the moon shines down, and brightens all within with its silver smile ) Behold wonders, even the heavens obey her cause. What manner of lady, can this be. Mysteries bright light, to see. I tremble, aye, within the same. See how my hand ever steady, shakes. For hither, unfolding surelly, is diseases cause, and remedy, mingled without a pause. With sacred steps, will I steal towards this sacrosanct hollow. And by faith, learn with an open, joyful, ever longing heart. Reasons, rhythm rhyme. The why of this events agnostic now, for believing, to transpose. ( ONO enters a hidden glade, which is enchanted by moonlight, and nights strange shadows.) 10. EXT. SUNKEN GARDEN GLADE. PENDULA MANOR. NIGHT _______________________________________________ From concealment, through blossoms, Duke ONO spies Lady Duotavia, upon a bower cradle swing, entwined with vines , soft leaves and flowers. 61

ONO Marry, loves ambassador. It is she before me bright. Moonlights service, rendered to my plea. For what was lost, and methought gone forever. Has returned to my visions, one embrace. See, my heart, how lightly she does move upon this garland swing. To her, for certain goes my string, to tie. Up and down. Silver is her lights golden crown. From nights heaviest darkness, where not a bloom does sing. To lefts dull shadow, chained, cheer ring. Back and forth. Her pyramid swings, black unlearned, white my hearts strings. Pulses momentary centre, moon and stars, the stream. Milky way the path to take. Now do I ache, my impulse rushes. Until 3, must I wait for the blushes. Confusion, be my only comfort. Fie, I say. Away comfort, no enterprise do you make. Away confusion, for your errors, there is no stake. I can no longer busy myself, with the watch of waiting. ( ONO remains concealed, despite his feelings ) Approaches disturbance, fear now, over feasts my head. What order sublime is working here, that makes minutes of the time, stand still. Without reprisals bitch, and crimes soar mouth, to add the clove hitch. 62

Page 67: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Answer me that, word of this night, that my instant reaction bears no screams of terrors satisfaction. How can I appear without reproach, or instant thoughts of hinder. Ladies can play their endless rebuke games. Acting fear, when not afraid. Rebuff and reproval without a gnats care. Ever hiding behind their mothers chair. Using others to apprehend, no thought about themselves, to mend. Riding the high horse of innocence, well marked , and blemished. A laugh. A scream with nothing inbetween. Indifference, to all feelings needing place. Just to conquer for the taste. For the perfection of their male blighted eve, of supreme control to count. Taking the spoils of supposed gentlemen’s ego freak, mad warfare to womb, continuation of the travail lease trickery not yet understood by they. Used pretences, for the abuse created. Aye, ladies, can play their endless rebuke games. By this can I , only a viewer be. Although clearly, she now, looks at me with words. Am I, but a bush with eyes behind which to hid. A pig, to counsel a disguise. O, then with awareness of the fraudulent sweet, for myself, to protect from false powers squeak. I will listen, least she to the night does speak. Her voice in secret, may her letter pursue. ( Lady Duotavia, swings gently from right to left and left to right. Only the quiet swish of the flower chariot disturbs the moon lit dell ) 63

Page 68: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Sweet lady, fair. Forgive my anguish declare. For all, surely cannot be tarred with sameness brush. Hear this poor smitten lovers plea. Remove you the garment cowl from your hair, so all the light of paradise can shimmering share. So hallowed, can be our father head. ( Lady Dutovia strikes back her hood, to let her long flaxen fair hair abound ) Have pity on me night, my holy words she does put to flight. By actions to obey. What power emulates such an effect as this. Yet speaking words, I am denied the ears. So, fie away. Without support confirmations encouragement. I am loath to proceed, without awakening distress to this beautiful call. O frailty. Pity me for the agony of my plights rapture. Only until the chimes are 3, does possibility awaken the enigma to me. Lo, this is not the maze mentioned. So I am undone. Impoverished heart. Hold hard. What occurs thus. Before my sight clear, despite inky black. A weird horror has appeared. Hooked and bent, its uneven form. Cloaked as darkness, upon the air does it stand. To the left of my lady fair, as though ascended from the grail chair of her swinging brain. Enter. Lord VOYCE, as seen by Duke ONO. See how it in silhouette grinds twig like hands, and grins with greeds control. Soothe, I fear for my lady, who seems not bothered. Can I now go forth, and contend. 64

Page 69: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

But caution has me wait. How upon the darkest air, can it stand. No manner known of creation, for sure can do likewise. Now, it speaks where my lady failed. Its rumbling scratch, as though from my very own head, hatch. VOYCE Cast me out again, by nature’s chance have you, strumpet unborn. Thrown by swings muddle by the ear, door puddle. Vixen hen, a great whore for sure, with my guiding hand. Snub me, when from birth no word have I let you rehearse. Nay, tilt your head no more. I have no compassions period, for the likes of thee. Mother will I call, she responsible be. Sweety, hear me clear, a moment of your time I desire. Precious lumbersome hag, too boot. ( Duke ONO from his hiding place, sees another black grey form appear to the right of Lady Duotavia. Standing humped in mid-air.) Enter. Lady EARWIG. ONO Weasel’s eggs. Behold another thing has occurred, like this grand-dad lout, absurd. Upon my left side born, bending as a burnt out stars retire. Feasting on the air of dull wit. Odds, soothe, this is all most strange, even too my 65

Page 70: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Medicines science. I wish I, the fit to contain. This latest creature must by display, be subservient to the man. Whose acts are as pitiful, as a neurotic lamb. EARWIG Hear you well my delight. My spouse. Father. Husband mine control freak keeper. Your Mother sweet, does kiss the feet of your words. Call you now me, from listening see. For what reason, sweety. VOYCE The artful wench, without my art, has thrown me again Through the door. Call me now you, Earwig. From the hiding big. Mother. Pay dearly, must this bitch. Such affront, I will not tolerate. When old, and aged, hagged like thee, at the door of death’s remorse, waiting. Beauty’s power, no longer being. Then, to you sweety earth bag, will she go. But, not until I have had the full life’s show. EARWIG Thank you hubby, for making this clear, for the umpteenth time. I am not deaf of the pattern laid. For ears, I hear beyond your boomings, monotonous 66

Page 71: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

bellow. Because of you, I too have been so cruelly transported thus. I suppose. Although, these ever changing days. Anything for certain fades. VOYCE It is this back and forth swing, that is the rumble. Tried have I not, with scheme might and main, to make her unfit, for the game. But Lord and Lady Pendula, would have their way. Just goes to show, there no loyalty exists. Betwixt ruling kind, and these fists. EARWIG Prithee spouse, cease your bubble rage, or burst. For me, you have too converse. I, and demean. So, what problem is now your sheen. Let us to the Manor go, and with others of our kind mix. Leave this shrew to her fix. VOYCE Silence, unholy cow, wife. I hear. This head do I command, what strife. EARWIG 67

Page 72: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Seems like it. VOYCE Hold hard to your listening, and speak when spoken to, common hag. Your turn comes, alack, only. When she, for the grave prepares, like all women. Dust and ashes. And all that mashes into earth’s stew-pot, to boil. You and she, in ending soil. With cold sod, to everlasting lie. EARWIG And yourself, long dead in her mother’s stately shed. Created from distorted brain, where is your supposed shame. What of you then. Not to blame, hand out begging for the fame. Hosts untouchable fiend. All women’s mouth friend, advisor. What of you. When no false place to guide her. For you have no provider. VOYCE Hold your mouth tight, wife. And give your jaw, a fright. We, will to the party go, and return when she has tired of this show. Nay, woman. An idea passes through my head. 68

Page 73: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

I will punish this upstarts rebellion, with her own sprightly venom. For beauty is a power, shapely jaded to harness, while being paraded. Night loathing trick, upon the dawns cleaning light. Writing on water, lost for ever sight. Acting elusive free, until swell gent, nob, does net. The reproduction make. By recommendations likes, of me. Clothed, all fashionable, smarmy, as loves devoted petal. Cloaks mantle, disrobe. Uncover yourself, my fine beauty’s pet. Mirrors idol, to regret. Know I from this hag, that nothing lies bare beneath. So swing through the labours of this night, stark. Naked for the strive. ( Obedient to her inner voice, Lord VOYCE. Lady Duotavia, throws off her cloak indifferently, to swing unclothed.) Come Lady Earwig, lets away. Fie, on this trout, for soon, by my evil disguise trick. She will be as fat, and ugly as thee. Or my worth has no salt. Exit. Lord Voyce and Lady Earwig arguing. ONO Now cover me, my eyes for shame, and turn my head away. For doctor, that I be. To steal such a heavenly sight, cannot be for me. How bright the silver light begets. 69

Page 74: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

(the moon, cleared of clouds drain, shines a nativity night clear upon the arbour swing. Banishing all the darkness of Lord Voyce and Lady Earwig’s invisible platforms. Unable, not to look at Lady Duotavia, Duke ONO watches her in full moonlight, sailing peacefully back, and forth through the enchanted air. As naïve, and innocent as new driven snows, winter come- uppance.) Lo, my heart beats fast now desire has been added to my review. I feel below awakening. Fallen from the bed of my dreams, shaken. Between my fine heads thoughts. Scholarly mind and body. There is a land, across which I have feared to go. Beauty’s lady fair, bridges this gap. And all I can do, is stand and flap. What vile creatures were those. I am exhausted by their sleaziness. And I feel, I am about to sneeze. ( Duke ONO, sneezes repeatedly.) DUOTAVIA Harken. Who is there. In yonder bush, sneezing. Sneezing. Aye. Sneezing. O, what wonderous miracle has overcome me. That, I can clearly hear, the like of my words, utterances, repeated. Within and without. O, such joy, brings this display. 70

Page 75: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

I possess the voice intent, to enquire boldly, on intrusions jest, content. Truelly, I can hear, for it is no trick. Truelly, speak. No dummy, any longer am I, weak. Sadness, has from me departed. Blockages of my malady, have left me, as newly born, unguarded. Praise be, to who in gentle heavens rest, has sent light, to help me view my latest plight. In yonder shrub lurking. Maybe, dwells that shy presence, working for my cure. Speak, bush that sneezes. Let me not from your face hid. Least you, are ugly cruel. Then I command you, go away. ONO ( appears clearly to her sight ) Nay, kindest, fairest lady, sweet. No bother in me is lurking for deceit. I am a mouse of virtues knightly trace. With good manners, clear and plain to face. DUOTAVIA Come closer sir, that I may view my programmes, without fears pressing change. For, I would practice my new words, and hear you by my own two ears, speak. For giving thanks, this hour long, with my affliction 71

Page 76: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

gone. I know only joy. Kind sir, think me beautiful. My body rare. My bosoms not comely, as my hair. ONO Lady, most fair. Agree I must. For I am a man truelly struck. But, for warning. Such words you should not, to a perfect stranger, so crudely utter. Least not at first meeting, meek. Even if you, as a man and woman do seek, perfections improvisation. DUOTAVIA Very well, corrected. A lady fair, must speak to a gentleman, if that be you, as accepted. Or loves fruit, she will never be, expected. ONO Milady, who I know, not knowing. A gentleman that I be, and gallant, before all circumstances jest. Of this experience, I must report. I have no wisdom, and only as an oaf do act, quietly. DUOTAVIA Sir, your flourish has a chemistry flavour. Your name 72

Page 77: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Sir, and I will grant you mine. ONO Bow I, most deeply, before the loveliness of your climate. I am. Duke ONO, Physcian Apothecary, to Her Royal Highness. Escallonia. Your devoted servant , milady. DUOTAVIA By Jove’s folio, you are well sprung, and well glad I be, that such as thee should lurk within my bush. I am. Lady DUOTAVIA, daughter of Lord Pendula of the Manor, my mother is, Lady Tatra Pendula. This introduction pleases me. ONO For soothe, I know them. DUOTAVIA Aye Sir, and these my private gardens, upon which you trespass. ONO O, I am distressed to bring you vexation. 73

Page 78: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

DUOTAVIA Nay, it is a joke, that we may share. Joviality I wish to master, without the scream of hyena laughter. Now, ONO, upon my swing cradle climb, and I will drive you with one accord. ONO By soothe, that be true. But I wish no unkindly sword to end my day. DUOTAVIA Without hesitations fuss, aboard climb, and kiss me well. My command yours to obey. If that not be, a too forward play. ONO Methinks it is, just a little. DUOTAVIA Then, your being a physician apothecary, instruct me upon all the arts, correct. On blessings too. Sciences few. Politics and love. ONO 74

Page 79: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Your eagerness listen, runs freely to my delights stem. DUOTAVIA Then mount me now, and lets away. Yours tight about my waist to stay. And ever wonder to the curves of my soft fleshy show. For I, with elations happy force spilling, care not what consequence provides. Now with voice and ear. I can with anything cope. ONO Were it possible, that to myself, I could only speak. As well I am used to dream. But this comely presence makes humbug of my fantasy trance. If she, I do deny, what ever her joyful hearts pleasure fee. I will betray both, she and me. DUOTAVIA Come good sir, what words do you talk now, as not directly. Clasp me tighter as my throne, and breath springs blossoms into my ears early blush. Tarry not with squandered times do’s, and don’t’s. For a fair lady I be, like a vine, full graped to climb. ONO Heaven’s pardon, I do implore, the swinging motion 75

Page 80: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

to my head I must adjust. DUOTAVIA O how comes it best for you to please, soft and slow. Or fast and furious, the upward drive. ONO Focus, must I upon these meanings, fairest bliss, with the demands of a kiss. My head is a whirling to my doublet’s unfurling. For movements preference, pray. Nice and slow, for to fast will make to much a show. DUOTAVIA Drifting then is your command. To touch and caress tender, and to look into each others eyes to find. ONO Fay, a spell you cast upon my body drum. My hear knows no more its cage, and races with the enticements of your quime. My lips do seem to palpitate, aye, wet and dry. My tongue to languish, for new homes to breath freely. Yet, hands riddle lay neat, and meek upon your knees. 76

Page 81: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

DUOTAVIA Breath I to, this gardens fragrances rare. Of loves warm call to arms, by beauty’s jubilation prance. So my eyes upon you dance with flashing, and my moist lips draw near, for crushing. Pray sir, there is nothing to fear. ONO A kiss to enjoy, and relish. Waits and swells. But is leading to passions immortal gate, to open. And for my own pity, I draw away. DUOTAVIA Fie, Duke, for speech these things do not belong. Doing is the hunger of this time song. Were I not deprived, from sound, and voice so long, away. I would rebuke your worry approach, as being stalling. Does my demise not please you thus. Is there no pleasantness a place, for the thrusts reservation, awaiting for your endowment. Am I not comely. Attractive, pretty call, forward and shy. ONO Prithee pray, calmed be. All of these inclines you surely be and more. For you have flung open my 77

Page 82: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

heavens door, with beauty’s key. I can no longer resist. DUOTAVIA Stroke then now, my idle brow, and soothe my breasts raptures, wanton haste. For I like other women, now wish to be, no longer parents lackey. So, with kindness sir, make it so. ONO Then drown I must. ( DUOTAVIA and ONO descend kissing warmly in close embrace, into the nest of the arbour. To be concealed by the flowers as the swing moves back and forth. A silence follows, as ONO’s cloak is cast overboard. Loves symphony of sounds is played by the couple, as passion entreats. In the distance. The clock chimes 2. ONO sits up abruptly.) ONO What hour strikes. By soothe. I am undone. DUOTAVIA For pity, on me now. This is not the how, I believed it should be. You pluck my moment of abandonment cruelly away. Fie, on you. Destroyer of dreams 78

Page 83: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

greatest moment. ( DUOTAVIA sits up.) ONO I, not I, this rapture breaks. But times unfeeling lout. Whose charm chimes has done this uncouth thing. Precious love, I wish you no such grief, as you accuse. For this untimely deed, by time, I can offer no excuse. For that which speaks thus, unrepentantly, holds ever loves tender bliss to scorn. DUOTAVIA This is not how first loves touch should be born. ONO Neither think I. But what pray in life, is what our heads expect. DUOTAVIA That is true. But affections, warm caresses arousel, has no place in words, vain dictionary. My fire is now quenched. I fear it will never take flame or spark again. ONO Then cursed be times wrench, if that the truth, will be. 79

Page 84: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Doubt, as goodness arises swift. But prithee, what hour did chime. DUOTAVIA Heaven’s, how you harp on such poultry. Why still speak of the hours chime so fervently. ONO You heard it then, clear. DUOTAVIA Aye, with my new ears, I hear all things clearly. ONO The hour speaks. The hour for my preoccupation was full extended, and all broken was being mended. Was it. 3. DUOTAVIA Still you enquire, who has put my womb to grave, so only ices frigidity can be resurrected. ONO 80

Page 85: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Pray, alas speak not this way. Embers tinders, smoulder deeper. DUOTAVIA By faith, I despair. From such passion did you swing, to this everlasting time theme. And with such brutal anxiety unleashed. To hesitate before such a feast. ONO The hour. Was it 2. Or was it 3. For reasons that make no sense now. I am called to respond. DUOTAVIA Sir, as Sir you must. Me. Duke, as Duke you are, as not for me. The hour was surely coupled as we, uncoupled. By no chance was it 3. Or 4. Or 5. Or 6. Nay, or 12, since long gone. Is that forecast good enough. Or must I just continue to be, not made of the silly stuff. ONO Woe, am I. The most sorrowful of men, that I have disturbed you so deeply, when blossoms the bud of attractions completely. To, insensitively take love from precisions bow. 81

Page 86: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

DUOTAVIA Speak no more of love. I have lost its flavour. The dish is greatly overrated, and tastes better in minds soft bloom, unharmed by time. Fie Sir, priorities have gone amiss. Distraction from organs hot pursuit, brings only dissatisfaction to my kiss. ONO Then dearest, this one who veins love openly. Must away. DUOTAVIA Begone Sir, without further ado. Such remorse I will not share. Return to your bush, hidder of the night. Peek. For I do not care. I will not bat an eye, or shed a tear. Make your haste to another’s bed. Shame is not this lady’s name. ONO Fair thee well, I will depart to hid my broken heart. Your indifference is my autumn’s fall. Let your peace lie over all. For my humble defence, I can only say ,things maybe made clearer another day. Alas, I go. Exit. Duke Ono, leaving Lady Duotavia, swinging. Exeunt. 82

11. EXT. A GROTTO LAWN MANOR GARDEN. NIGHT. _______________________________________________ A statue lined grotto lawn, deeply sunken. By yews and box tree fancy. Paths, geometrical surrounds awaiting. The bedraggled party pair. Humanities duality. Arrival at the empty gate. Searching for another fare. Enter. Lord VOYCE, followed subserviently by Lady EARWIG, arguing. VOYCE Hold your nagging tongue a thrice. What before us plenty, presents itself to entice. Company companions for us, to search select. EARWIG Yea husband, who controls my voice, a sight to behold indeed. Dignity and uprighteousness standing. VOYCE Then, let us mingle, and with cunning tread aspire, 83

a likely new home for our bed. EARWIG Most certainly of youthful perfection are these fine, filly’s naked in a line. VOYCE Behold, over there in yonder bloomed surround. White as the moonlight nights, milk and cream, held by the shower of a beam. So pronounced, awaits our visit. EARWIG Another wench again, to give your voice a wrench again. VOYCE Hush, beloved hag, with your silly. You’re the only thing I’ve ever had filly. Duty bids my call to action. We will approach as lost in vain, and hasten an introduction from the same. Such a loveliness upon a noble pedestal, must for being, help for the likes of us. We will approach with care, and you my turtle dove, while I keep her talking with the splendor of my tongue. Will seek an edifice, with your sharp eye to 84

open. So we can to that bitch, Duotavia, make good reply. EARWIG Have I no choice, but to follow, and obey life’s endless nonsense play. For weak am I to roam alone, without the strength of a man at home. To guide, and protect, and honour. All his fancies, prima donna. Must I endow, while he the full reward takes. VOYCE Prithee me, my dear. Do not speak so forlorn clear. At the end you will conquer, and together be the bonker. EARWIG So you say, and ever speak. Of that fine day, that never, like tomorrow comes. VOYCE Nay, you are deceived, all to the earth must finally concede, to conceive as born again. That is the fruit, and milk, and bread of the storm. 85

Page 90: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

EARWIG Aye, all is mine, when bed and dead are nearly done, and you Sir, have drained away all that could ever come. Dredges age, I inherit. Alas, if this my only dowry before all my subterfuges suffer. Best I away, and change, if the how were possibility. VOYCE Enough rebellion for this, another day. Now understand what to do. As I with her you. EARWIG Yea master, husband , not mine. Generous spouse. I bow before the glory of your new house. If bend I could, and not old, and wretched be. I will attend to your commands upon my knee. VOYCE and EARWIG approach the statue of a naked maiden, humble and as orphans lost in deceptions snow storm. VOYCE ( coughs ) Pardon our untimely intrusions upon your repose, most beautiful young maiden. We are old and bent, and for the house seeking, is our intent. But, alack, we are in this magnificence unwell lost. Could you but help us, on the right way. 86

Page 91: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

STATUE ( silent ) EARWIG There you see. She is fully occupied. With dreams of life’s endless romance. No time aside, for our decay. VOYCE Hush up, gilt. Just do your look-out job. For certain, she can hear, and see, and speak. Even if she pretends not. EARWIG Another thought, thinking swine, what of the tenants of her accommodation. Will they have nought to say about our intrusion squatting occupation. VOYCE ( whispers ) If you must speak out loud, and let ears that would cock hard, hear our oration. Eviction is the word. The audience of our position demands with its own laws. And has more important content gained from long noble experience. But do not threat, honey-pot. The pleasant rub of this bee, is that the tenancy is unoccupied, and we will have run of all the rooms of this silent dreamers 87

house. EARWIG We will soon see. That’s for sure. VOYCE ( coughs to attract the statues attention) Please forgive my wifes dear interuption of our conversation. She is full of fun like that. I think, now I whisper softly. She may be jealous because we get on so well. Perhaps my enquiry has found favour, and you have time aside to consider. And will help us with our whither. STATUE ( silent ) EARWIG There, you see, she doesn’t want to know thee. Let me try. Women to women deeper speak. Only to men, who do not rumble, do they play such a silent game as this tumble. 88

Page 93: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

VOYCE Silence old wench. For your tongue, the same. This is the region of my domain. Can’t you see that I have turned her head upside down, and is shy to be bound. So in kindness waits for the completion of the fates. EARWIG Fie, if you believe that, then a greater fool do you be than that I took you to be. Even greater that I, here with you standing. VOYCE Very well, but I’ll not go to your hell. Of your observations speak, the employment of reasons weak. Have you found an open door. EARWIG Yea, but not for sure. VOYCE If not for sure, when I have long spoken. You are no better than I, and cannot criticise a fly. Again I will approach this uppish maid posh, who 89

could be acting, and all that tosh. ( he coughs and splutters ) Please forgive my state of health, as aged fragility. My helping stick have I lost, has been cruelly kicked away. Lean I upon your pedestal for aid. O my poor breathing is insecure, with heart that ticks not for sure, and lungs and bowels that wither away. Yet, at your tender blessed feet I’ll stay, to put cowslips between your pretty toes at play. How speak you now of such a delight. ( coughs ) Pardon the purse of my phlegm, for you know no such trouble yet. STATUE ( silent ) VOYCE Well spouse, have you yet spied a way sure, a door to enter in this bore. EARWIG Yea, for sure there is only one suitable, where her left ear does dwell. All others are closed by frigidity’s seal. VOYCE 90

Lo, progress intervenes with ever moving change. Betwixt silences nothing response and indifferences lackey. Procrastinations nipple nip, by patience fearful tip. Now we can get on. Come, pretty sprite, vixen wife, your tender foot in my hands cup place, so I can raise you onto the pedestal high, and reach the new abode of our sky. EARWIG Ascend up there to vertigo’s heights, not on you nelly, with my belly. I no twisting, turning athelete be, who will not even lay down for a fee. VOYCE Dove’s winged angel, pigeon pet. Sweetest sweetener. Agility is an illusion, if upon a screen made certain, nothing is ever what it seems. Come lightness feather, and into the air with my muscles straining, you will float, to be obtaining. EARWIG How stupid is this old goat so aged, that he believes these things because he said. What if I do arise, where is place to grip, and pull, And a ledge for my thighs. 91

Page 96: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

VOYCE Vent not aloud, before she hears thee. The kind beauty will oblige, and with legs, and hips, and thighs, and breasts, a rest make for your gnarled hands ache. Won’t you my dear. EARWIG What repore, this idiot jack cock for my sore, with the silence of this whore. Commonsense will I to him, restore. Come Sir, Milord, your cupped hand, not your sword, and I will arise and climb. ( with considerable grunting palaver, Lady EARWIG manages to balance uncertainly on the pedestal holding the statues trim waist.) VOYCE There, at last. What a noble sight for sure. So picturesque, and statue like, mother. EARWIG Cease your prattle, father no love. Another chore do I immigrate. My poor feet are pins and needles striking sharp. My fingers to the bone, conspire to come alone. My balance has no envy’s place, and collapse is for sure it’s disgrace. 92

Page 97: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

My wig is struck crudely out, my ear and names monologue brings no cheer. And all I can see is his face burning brightly, with sickly assume, for this young rag-tail bloom. VOYCE Blossom. EARWIG Harken to how he speaks, yet flowers rot in his shed that passes for a head. If to believe such compost, I would sooner roses green poison take. Aye, and fake, if I could get away. VOYCE Reach up higher, and grasp her bosoms for secure. EARWIG Now, he thinks for sure, he is me. Mirrors tale, a winter bleak makes of my contempt for such reversal. VOYCE You , my trout. 93

Page 98: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

EARWIG Then shut your hooked mouth, and let me be. For sure this maiden hen, is very distant, quietening. VOYCE Forget beauties silence. Just perform your duty. Rise up straight and enter. EARWIG Prithee Sir, I am exhausted. O I feel faint, about to fall. ( unbalancing, Lady EARWIG’S pear rump sits on Lord VOYCE’s head. ) VOYCE Clodhopper woman, you smother me with your skirts. Feel my fingers upward plunging on your fanny, I will push, and you will pull. Together we will overcome all. Make haste, for the smell reproaches me like the fruits of hell. EARWIG Woe, I am so struck. Have you no shame, my toiletries to expose. What facilities had I in 94

Duotavia’s bare humdrum for fine soaps and perfumes fragrance. To bath my skin, until more than tender, and put lotion upon my holy fenders. Speak to me, not a smell, or a rumbling trump will be your bell. And my geezer you will blow, and serves you right for this show. VOYCE Push, and endeavour. EARWIG Pull. So rises this pretty feather. VOYCE ( to the silent statue) Our pardons for this intermission. The old and feeble cannot do things, same as the likes of thee. Why stay with her, do you say. Such a personal question to ask. O very well. I will answer. Because by devotion we are bonded, and separate only can accomplish amalgation for the cause. Does that not make it clear. Eventually, rule the day, when we can no longer have our say. We will just dissolve away. When someone clear, shows the way. 95

EARWIG Who are you speaking to now of tribulations. Is my plight not enough to please you. Never in your sacred chair do I sit, or murmur at your disturbed fit. VOYCE To myself pigeon. Nothing important. EARWIG How surprising. Now listen to this reconnaissance report. While grasp I her bosoms by fingers nipple. I am too short to reach what is here. VOYCE Use your toes, sweet pippin sprout. With dancers points uplift. EARWIG My weary old legs now do ache, and my calves weak to break. Nay, I cannot an entrance make. The door is too small. VOYCE 96

Fie, magnification is your real game. By earth’s small purpose, you have changed the squander of pretence. Making all images into truth’s fence. Shallow use the same supposition, deflate your head, and squeeze up. ( VOYCE speaks to himself ) For sure, when the only talent the wife possesses to extend our agony, she does to the heaven’s turn. ( VOYCE speaks to EARWIG ) How goes your endeavour, my puppet. EARWIG ( gurgling ) My head is stuck. Help. O help, for pity sake. My dilemma is absorbing me. My cheeks bubbling, have gone high. I’ve lost my nose. My nose. I’ve lost my nose. VOYCE Try, my ducky. You can do it. Only endeavours hardest push can bring our nuptual gain. EARWIG I can go no further. All is closed, blocked and sealed. This is not where I am used to roam. Nay, for help, this cannot be my new home. Pity husband, no longer weary me. 97

Enter. Duke ONO on his way to the maze, he glimpses unseen, the strange situation of Lord VOYCE and Lady EARWIG. His curiosity gets the better of him as he watches from behind a box tree. ONO Woe am I, amongst all men. For duties sake, I have hurt most deeply, one of lovelinesses name, Duotavia. Lost have I, what was surelly there to gain, and betroth. Lost for loves note unknown factor, to attend at 3, the cloisters of mazes uncertainty. For my lady, yours to share. Now because of panic’s haste, time I have to spare before find. And I can only stand and stare at this lunacy fair. Depart from hence. I can not. Come what may, this is the ultimate nature of my nights day. These two fiends, so ugly, from what hells gate, I have no pulpit to preach. I am certain surelly part, if part this be the word. Of the lovely lady on the swing. Who now my betrothed heart does sing. How comes this couple, and from where. That bring no armoury to my despair. Fickled, I must be. How could I to one unknown, by a letter feelings. Affections transpose. With darknesses calling, find another in my heart. Am I alien, with two hearts in my stem. 98

Page 103: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Do I blossom with many flowers. Or am I one bloom, certain and true. May the later show, my believing, until the anguish of this night strangeness replies. Wherefore does answers come. Until sureness I gain. Haste not my counsel to wed, or even bed. Least I end up surely dead. Pray now, what are these absurd creatures up to. Perched in grotto’s middle, statue bound. Playing worships ground, to stone throne found. With protections vow, interlaced, I have no intent to encounter face. Or, even offer helps assisting holy hand. For fears uncertainty holding blame, these are devil without fame. Hiding as slug slush, within the blocked cellular caverns of the brain. I, little wonder, there is no mind or truth able to maintain, and we are all to sloths illness doomed. Now, I will listen clear, encased by this tree, so a curing insight I may perceive. For surely if that be granted possible, my plight is but a blessing for me, and all in disguise planted. VOYCE Pratty faced woman, you are nearly there. All this puff, and blow without accomplishment. Thing of your soft chair, a sailing away. EARWIG 99

Page 104: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Let me down, or I will release, and fall. Then maybe, our peace will lie over all. ONO ( speaks to himself. Not able to be heard by Voyce or Earwig.) Of what inky mantle steep, does this imbecile creature speak. What dark hole prepared, would she by sorcery contrive to entice, and cover all man, and mice, and beast. VOYCE Pieces for sure. I will have no more of your disgrace. For failure is the name of your race. EARWIG Pox on you. Insulting varmit with reptile tongue called a tail. Marry worm, I let go. For my own pity sake. To fall what may. Idle pig, reap the squallor of this dig. And squirm. ONO ( speaks to himself) O the creature is going to fall from such a height. With twig bones to crack, and head to squash, and mash like raw boils pus, and hash. Surely, I dream this nightmares real kick. 100

Page 105: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

And dig, and nod, and carry on. This illusions fantasy no sane reality possesses. And yet, I question. Should I address. As a doctor by sacred oath, to heal all woes regardless of the nature of the propose. Fay, something holds me back. Not to interfere, or I like they could disappear. Hysterical then be, this odd hallucinations farcical repertory. Low, she has let go. EARWIG ( Lady Earwig falls upon Lord Voyce, as he is moving, covering him with the burden of her tresses. ) VOYCE Release me kindness, I forbid this extra weight. Phew, the smell of odours bitter, pass from boots location to wrinkled vocation. No pear shape does she be. Nay, full apple over ripe, just like me. Help me, whose ever near, hold your nose, and do not fear. I splutter for death’s refresher. This shrew has been scrumped from the orchard of our previous employ. The rot in her skirts long wear, does squash all credence about my hair. Get off woman. I swear, I am smitten, and mortally injured. 101

Page 106: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

EARWIG Squirm , you unnatural worm. No pity have I for your trough. With body cushion that makes me scoff. I will lay as I please, and you beneath will I squeeze. VOYCE Woe, I suffer on. ONO ( speaks to himself) Are these clowns only. Who not real, can destroy and create all adversity within our naked breast. The reasons for deaths evil sting, and diseases corruption vile. Who now hamper rollicking on the ground. Is this the cursed reason for human failure. If torch were to them put, to quarantine, and quarter. Would they burn flames to the skies. Or does plans vault open up and swallow. As us all, when deaths a hollow. Humanism is their blind sight. Humours bleet are these, the ingredient to complete. Nay, such as this cannot be. And we are the order making. Without even knowing of their taking. Take up heart. Learn I now, the nature of this peer couples active cart. 102

Page 107: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

EARWIG How sits your lot now, no husband house, with the guts of a dead mouse. This elephant has found her nose again. And does cheeks straighten that did uneven bubble. Relaxed, I feel I will here remain in quiet content comfortable. VOYCE Milady, I am no tent, to you lent, for your content. The cause above, who still looks down with silence profound. No clue betray. We must go elsewhere from this sullen maid. ONO O forefoot for folly, I will be late for my feckled hearts meeting. I must away. How now does time grow. Surely it must be nearly 3. VOYCE Mother deary, this for sure, something have you taught me. Better the place we know, than unknown worse trouble elsewhere. EARWIG 103

Page 108: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Father dear, for want of your injury dying, forgot. Have you now by miraculous hand, been cured of your abhor. VOYCE Vain wife, trout. Lift your legs, and let me out. EARWIG Very well, if you ask nicely. With a please. I will undo your body freeze. VOYCE Please. Please. Sweetest pigeon troth. Only heart precious. Please. Release me. ONO ( speaks to himself ) Can I afford forsooth to remain any longer. But for Lady Duotavia, do I tarrying feel. Are these two reprobates declined. Cause and effect of her voice and ear defect. Her deaf and dumb rejection sum. Now, these monsters threaten, alas, to return, and take up further residence, without respect. O quack, charlatan I must be. That I can do nothing To stop this tower’s iniquity. Lackey, alas. 104

Page 109: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

If I go, and run away, for my own ends delight. I will surely fail the sharp edge of my own foil assail. VOYCE Come precious, not alone. My hand I offer, for a walking romance totter. This display without audience is my coffer. Take my hand, wife I say, our marriage is not made in heaven for strife. EARWIG Your kindness, Milord. Unrehearsed still, has the soundings of a hearse. But with practice all the time, your voice may kinder be, and what I hear will not be the death of me. My hand Sir, that us walk, not strut, and return to our Lady Duotavia, to make amends. Together, Lord Voyce and Lady Earwig parade slowly, unknowingly passed Duke ONO, who stands as a silent statue. He observes their expressions. Exit. Lord Voyce and Lady Earwig. ONO Despite the smarm of their end. Faces 105

expressions show no mend. These things maybe inviting, but are only certainly, made for plighting. ( in the distance, 3 chimes ) Heaven has no forbid. It now strikes 3. My 1 to 2, has now come 3. For certain on the path of truth, and knowledge do I stand. For with no uncertainty can I now plea. The die is cast. The decision sure. The one now, is for the resting poor. To bless. Exeunt. 106

12. EXT. THE MAZE PENDULA MANOR NIGHT _____________________________________________ From ivy coach house, steeped in gloom, they came. Early to juxtapose. All cloaked in blacks stately form. Carrying the arbour floral train, in solemn tribute to the pain. Hearse regimental, by the Lords leading. Abstinents promise of nights stealth a creeping. Quiet cobbled courtyards, with no shreds of sound. A leaping to their ribbon cortege. How holds the night, long before 3. To prepare the stage, for players hidden lines to gather. And loins together, for the final act. Rehearsals first night the pact. Through gardens, dark with trees and lawn slopes. Earth’s places where only moss does mope. Solemn their line, without a word of the time. Until in array, to maze centre came. Infernals replacement for the flame. Mays refurbished display, gentle placed. And then to hid cleverly, within branch and bower, to wait until the love note hour of 3. * In dribs and drabs, burly. For the best views early. Masquerade’s frolic came. And lo, as a flower stem, did tower, about the 107

maze at this exact hour. Serene, quiet and well hid. A figure, perfumed to dust, a reeking. With long white ribbon wig a peeking. Bouncing, wrapped in gardens shadows cover. White masked, cosmetic lips and cheeks. Thick with rouge, a peach. Eyes fingers lashes, mascara mounter, earings hoops sparkling, the final touch for larking. With lanterns warm glow beaming, hips did move wantonly seeming. Rasping out the call to raise, arbours hardest lump. Towards mazes puzzled face did go. To meet loves note victim neat. Honey sweet, the wench, the pearly. Or was it only the Earl. * In the closest position to the centre of the maze, as a theatre box and foyer, where the floral arbour sits waiting the arrival of the lady fair. Her Royal Highness, Escallonia, with her waiting-women. Cordylin, Ussa in close attendance, with guards. Together with Lord Pendula, Lady Tatra Pendula, Lady Purpusil Foutta and Agrance Hakonech. Aside, with further good viewing, Sir Reech, Tardina, his wife. Lord Rulla, Lady Ophilo Rulla. Hidden close to the centre maze feeling nervous is Baron Ruscus, Sir Nico with attendants. While hiding opposite is Lord Foutta, Captain Hakonech attended by armed guards. Concealed further is Bishop Beacon with his episcopate attendants. Enter. Earl Stipa ( dressed as a fine lady fair, holding a lantern before the silent maze entrance. ) On the ridges about the maze other masquerade Ball groups arranged strategically, are concealed in shadows, watching. STIPA ( enters the maze) Where art thou my love. My beloved, Sir. Hear me call your name, Duke Ono, kindly. It is I. Your lady fair, who is here, to you approaching. Privy Sir, do not be shy, hiding. I know to the centre quickly, you go, without much ado. Naughty twinkles in your physicians eye, for a cheeky love lorn lass like me. This dull labyrinth I will soonest discover, and hasten prettily to your savage arms enrapture. (STIPA speaks to himself) Soothe, I have never travelled these irksome bushes, ever changing in the day. Now with only meanest lantern light, I am expected to conquer such a puzzle, hampered by a woman’s muzzle. (STIPA begins to pick his way uncertainly along a dark maze path.) * FOUTTA ( speaks to his concealed companions) Harken, the imbecile has arrived all poxed up with silly 109

she words, and poofed to puff. HAKONECH The signal has been carried. I have men ever strange, to ruffle up his paths, geometrical feet. So by the time he arrives at maze centre, he will be more worn to flee. FOUTTA Nay, not to much roughing, or his upset will surelly pause the show. See to it friend, Captain. HAKONECH The tether I will have them loosen, have no fear. * ESCALLONIA ( speaks to her court on maze centre stage) Pray, is that a wasp light I see dithering afar at maze bend yonder. Is this the players beginning. CORDYLINE Aye, mam. For certain, for the pungent perfume drain, that arrow wafts and lacquers overdress for enticements kill. 110

Page 115: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ESCALLONIA Fay, my poor Duke Ono, what has he done to inherit such treatment, crude. USSA We have already at a trice, sent maids of sentinel trust, to conspire harassments clever stalk, to sneak, and make this hedghog a bed most brittle. CORDYLIN And, your Highness pleasing. With agility, banish he, I mean she. To arrive at centre unwept, and well forlorn. ESCALLONIA Nay. Nay, You cannot treat such a refined lady to bust such, unjust. I would that your amazonians, did just buffet quietly. For he to the centre must make his recital, so good fun must not be spiteful spent. See then to a softening of your policy. * DEACON ( Bishop Deacon speaks with his clergy hiding in the bushes.) I have vanity lost, and a curved turn make. For my contribution regret, the Baron’s cruel intent. And must make amends. 111

Page 116: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Send your servants. Let their sermons be sweet temper, with cheeks ably turning to prevent this charades arrival. ARCHPRIEST By steal, knife and dagger do you mean. Or charities prayer book unread. DEACON Heaven’s forbid. Just the very touch of simple. No blood or fuss, or witch brew to cuss. All expect a spectacle of kind to occur. Just flurry up the mind. Yea, the signs change to round about. So like us all by our selfish ways denied. No centre path will he be allowed to take. ARCHPRIEST We will serve the words enigma, and more abstract make. Until life unbearable to take. DEACON Nay, do not over do. Help him backwards to the swain. Surelly that is more than plain. 112

* OPHIO ( she speaks to her concealed group from a good viewing position.) Milord husband. I hope you have obeyed my command, that hampering help will be his woman’s way. RULLA Milady, wife. Understood is your request. OPHIO And acted upon forthwith, no Baron Ruscus’s tricks, or the pity. For headaches will from my bed abound, experience has long shown me the way to treat. RULLA Nay, Milady wife, no need for this kind of strife. Your command set, has been done. TARDINA And my Sir, what of my say, to obey. REECH 113

Page 118: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Likewise, did I see, as your entreat. No possibility will it be, that he will arrive to cement farces legality. TARDINA What, that is not my command to haste. Would you have rejection, even more at our door dwell. If he does not arrive, and we are found to be the pointed out cause. Foolish swain, need I say more of your science frame, if such. One day you will, yea climb the stars of night, such a pretty sight. To discover, all is in your head already solved, but thee. Waste no more the mercenary of your tomfoolery. For lacking physic’s formula, all is like your obedience to me, distorted double talk, pretending one. Do I make myself clear, speaking with your tongue. REECH I, Madam, and the deed is done, in hand. TARDINA Such quickness to the age of discovery. Can only by results be blessed. So let the foolish fool arrive, with only little palaver. * STIPA 114

Page 119: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

( he gropes his way in the dark maze) F orsooth the lantern shows little beam, all is shadows, black to hid, my foot to trip, as I stumble my clandestine path. VOICES ( remarks of concealed masqueraders ) Phew, the reek of it. Whose sty door has this cabbage blasted. Phew, grunting trough descending. Nay, heshe onager he-haw. STIPA Harken. I hear voice pleasantries. But this lady must pretend alone, picking loves tear. Duke Ono, I am coming, my dear. Fret not your ladies tresses, with fears of distresses. I feel my way further. Help. What shadows now block my passage. Hold hard the blow, or I will not a lady show. Now I have fallen. Tripped for sure. What audience is this, that is displeased before actress, this stage does tread. I will hasten, though my knees feel torn by some cudgel’s thorn. Some conspiracy now has my foot. If I hold my lantern higher, yea, I maybe will perceive better, directives clearances. O, the bushes move now, fingers like twigs, pull at 115

me pretty curls. VOICES ( giggles from hidden masqueraders) Hello wench. Plump and dandy. Here’s a penny for your candy. And a hand for your randy. STIPA Heaven’s, that was no branches smacking, and those hands a shyness lacking. All has gone dark. My lantern has lost its clout, and decided to go out. Nay, my wig dislodged, has thrown all meagre lights bone to a dirty dog. I will run, and hedges will guide my gallop. Nay, for pity sake, hop. My ankles now caught at the top. With great dignity I must now survive, or, Milord, will have my hide. Stumble I on. Ay, clearance now for a way for sure. This maze canyon of fatigue seeks to gobble me up. How much further feet, is my uncertain tread. The air here , does distinct taste of incense, and deaths dead flesh hanging on the living. A sign. Nay, two signs. I must read carefully : TO THE GATE IF YOU PLEASE 116

Page 121: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

What help pray is that, so dutifully centre bound. I will read this other I have found : TO THE GATE IF YOU PLEASE Fie, two signs the same pointing opposite ways. Yet my destination remains a fake, for goodness sake. Wherefore can I trust, if the very word does deceive. Forward and back, are the same. Nay, which other yesterday was I born. Now I glimpse a siding concealed. A hedge cave, grotto trick, that maze’s artfulness sets out to cast a doubt. But oft be the real way hidden. I will make my squeeze. O heavens, open wide, and help me here to survive. Fiends do now book end me. (STIPA shouts aloud.) Is that you, my precious Duke Ono, pressing with the rod of your nights prod. ( STIPA whispers angrily) Let go you brutes, there is no root here to tug. Struggle must I to achieve. The struggle I must, with kick and clout. Ever true lady’s prerogative, to sort you out. At last free. But all this endeavour wearies me. With such graceful ease, I had anticipated this elope. Yet a fantasy, aye, what a dope. I should have stood my ground firmer. Instead, damnations ugly route, a cul-de-sac, unrelenting. A back-water drift, that will not shift. A wrong turn back and concealed. I must retrace my steps, and be heavy dashed, to escape adversity. ( STIPA runs and trips over his own skirts, and rolls 117

bedraggled into the bushes ) O woe is me. Bruised and lost. Suffering from yet another cosh. Picking myself up, will be my only advance this night. Brush myself down, a drunken spell. A totter ragtail fop to hell. ( STIPA disappears into the darkness of the maze as one lost ) * RUSCUS Where is the fool. Surely by now he should appear. NICO Lost. Baron. Of repute, no doubt. This is a maze of fine fettle founded, to out wit, even the cleverest of diversions brain. RUSCUS Our fool, that is for sure. People will surely weary of the wait, and no achievement will fall upon our plate. Pox, that Bishop, for his letter hand, who did pick this spot, for such a clot. NICO 118

Page 123: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Patience can be our only ally now. Our good Sir, has some marbles that must play. RUSCUS Nay, certainly not between his legs to hang. And further worry I. Where be pigeon man, set for ridicule’s blasting horn. NICO Hid. My Baron, within the arbour place centre maze, I do presume. This cunning adversary has brought his own bed. RUSCUS Fie, Sir. This was not my scheme. NICO Neither I. But I did assume, you had no information. RUSCUS Something in my stomach questions, and my itches scratch has a regression. Where is our scapegoats perfumes train, to seduction wending. 119

* ESCALLONIA When does, what ever is going to happen, happen. By now, surely the overture is over, and the curtain long raised. The empty stage of darkness awaits. Must I soon clap, and hiss, and stamp my feet. All for the enjoyment of treacheries kiss. CORDYLIN Privy your Highness. Please do not over concern. The stooge is lost in yonder hedges, where at times indifference, a small light does glimmer. For sure, she, if she, she be uncertain, is making progress hence. USSA If it true. There. A lights glow shone quick, and retreated into pitch. For sure, he, if he, he be uncertain, is making progress hence. ESCALLONIA Make up your minds, I can see the twisting bush fence. The light as well. What ever it is. 120

Is under some spell. CORDYLIN For drama’s tension, he must be extending, knowing we all await impending. USSA Climax, the ending. * FOUTTA Trust the Baron’s frown, to make muddle of his clown. For sure, we have for ours supplied, warmth and recreations digging field. HAKONECH Good planning, well performed, will always a quarry beat. For the unexpected is nearest prepared as possible. FOUTTA All I fear, is our clowns body worn with delights, has not embraced deep sleep for the night. 121

Page 126: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

HAKONECH Nay Lord, do not worry, crude wakening will soon bring him around. * STIPA ( Appears out of the maze bushes ) How much further winds my weary way, ever the same passing. All signs are set to deceive with losts curiosity up its sleeve. And with every move, over fingers masquerade I step. While shadows ever seek to waylay me with conquests inhibitions. Yet, to my own praise I will not give, and will further demonstrate determination. I will my full beauty adjust, ever calling as letter bidding. This part will I play out to the full. Fie, on all who would do me ill. For I am as innocent as anyother thee, just serving alacrity. Did I not with determination, try not to condone this formation. Yet, forsooth, now I am, she. I come my good Sir, Duke Ono, with post haste, to see the love upon your face. Our night has not yet been spent, for I am strong smitten without relent. * CORDYLIN 122

Page 127: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Hearken your Highness. I hear a love sick call. She is arriving. ESCALLONIA Fool girl, I’m not deaf. I heard it to, lamentable USSA See there, movements in the shrub, and a light beams rocking song. Not long now for the centre, he will make. ESCALLONIA Then look again, girl surprising. The light retreats back another way. CORDYLIN It is the maze, with uncertain tread. ESCALLONIA For well I know that tread. At this rate without a guide, he will never find centre hid. 123

Page 128: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

* NICO Ay Sir, he approaches. The lantern I perceive. RUSCUS My anger doest seethe, at the ambiguity of this deceive. The clod has gone away again. I shut my eyes, and wish this thing I had not started. NICO Open wide, for trout, here he comes again the lout. Enjoy the pleasures of our success, and the ranking of the climb. As powers adversary, we will give greed another name, and make the rest feel regals shame. Nay, close your eyes, Sir. Do no pursue, he has gone back beneath the hue. RUSCUS Fie, I trust not myself, why should I your report, my eyes are more peaceful, to open to this imbeciles rambling retort. * STIPA ( struggling to reach the maze centre) 124

Page 129: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

I am coming. I am coming, my Duke Ono. Let your heart prepare for my embraces. ( to himself ) Fie, back and forth do I yo yo swing. Nothing is occurring as it seems. This maze is certain, life’s unkind gatter, meaningless even to the patter. Darling, Duke Ono. Think on the words of my letter as I approach. My femininity has no strength, but for thee. Post haste swirling, hold me still, that no movement with you can I thrill. Contained am I, as the letter’s trust, with a pained lovesick heart for thee. Ay, no longer can I contain. Commisions thrust must bring me hence. ( to himself ) If it wasn’t for this blighted fence. Fair Lady yours, will soon endow. ( he comes within sight of the maze centre and arbour.) Awake my Duke, to this call and answer. So I can hear your voices loving tones, and be guided to the harbour of sweet liaison’s nest. OSPER ( answers from within the concealment of the arbour, as Duke Ono.) Who calls this enchanted night to wed, for a happy feast upon this bed. 125

Page 130: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

STIPA Lo, for certain I hear a reply. ( to himself) A sweet duet I will make to take the cherry off his iced cake. My Duke, my all. Your words plain to my feelings fall, are well by my ears received. My passion can linger no more for the touch of your lips. Duke Ono, I approach. No more this maze tangle to encroach. (to himself ) If only this were so. But if upon his beam I find guidance, then I will overcome what so far has eluded me. Aye, there is another sign at this bend. ( he reads ) NEARLY AT BEGINNING Nay, if this be the nature of the beginning, what of this intolerable end. Hearken I hear reply. OSPER Are you not yet arrived before our cradle, to abide loves ferret ladle. STIPA 126

Page 131: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

* FOUTTA At long last they have made some contact. HAKONECH Privy, now it be more definite. The riffraff fop, is calling help from our clown. FOUTTA Then pray his humour lacking, will grant alimony to amend. So with audience granted, all will put this idle farce to shame. HAKONECH Soon may it be so. I believe his lantern approaches. * RUSCUS What now, I hear the prattling of their rattling. Will I soon be able to open my eyes to our excellency. NICO 127

Page 132: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

The night light does still make troubles appear. Whether he is far, or whether near. Could be soon time to welcome good cheer. * ESCALLONIA I hear their voices, verse reply, but can see nothing for the sky of your head, dear Cordylin. CORDYLIN Move I forward, your Highness, for content to clearly see. How now does it apply. ESCALLONIA My dear, with the blanket of nights sheath, voices drifting on a breeze that has no existence to vision. USSA For sure, we will soon comprehend, and be treated to a free for all of truths mustard. ESCALLONIA And how sits my noble physician, whose voice alack, so indistinct and strange, that I could swear bears 128

another name. CORDYLIN Verily, the same have we, together observed. So what oddity in that flower bedecked arbour hids. * DEACON The unholy couple, by wits bans unread, appear by voice near to wed. Making much of certains vows for communities verbal dance. Soon, we will all be treated to the prance. * TARDINA Long has been this masquerades wait. But soon we will be witness to love’s fete. For certain, Her Highness, in her child’s chair, will from a great height, have reason to swear. OPHIO Anticipation is my graces guess, for all with agility do draw closer, and the hedges noble fence does buckle neath the weight of expectancy. To glimpse the undoing of the Physician. 129

Page 134: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

How speak you husband, Milord, of this pretty ado long spun out, as all life’s nonsense bouts. RULLA Silence, do I only speak, Milady. My legs have gone to sleep, and cruel damp about my garments creep. To common sense speak I now. Get it over, and lets to warmths drinking bowl take, to fire our embers belly. * STIPA The centre of this maze riddle at last I glimpse. My courses tightness can no longer divide my venture. I see an arbour like unto Springs sweet mating spurts. Decked in gilted ambers skirts. Curtained containing, my victims shyness retaining. These last steps with upraised tress do I scamper. ( he is tripped ) Pardon, my beloved, Duke Ono, for delay. An angels wing did flutter across my sight, and I did flounder, so contrite. With you so close, so far, our first encounter now can spar. Sing praises hymns, and music lively, so together we can burst , surprisingly. Just you and me, our eyes to see, and make gladness the treasure of our hamper. ( almost off balance, he leans upon the flowery arbour bower for support ) 130

Page 135: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Beloved, breathless have I arrived. With your guidance I will survive. For what care we a firkins fig, for all the others, and their piggy wig jig. How speak you of this, Duke Ono, all knowing. Is our duty so, to be undone. I listen, for words solace, but hear no reply. The bowers curtained shield, I swear, does keep my eyes from your hair. I am your fine lady fair. Rendering dedication of recitals everlasting care. Speak to me of your real feelings. How measure you Her Highnesses might, the court and nobility surrounds, that keep us so captive, and bound. * NICO ( speaks to Ruscus) Sir, surelly your eyes are open wide to see, this fellow making good our plea. With double words that greatly please me. RUSCUS Ay, open with surprise. The wiles of our Stipa, so clever to contrive. There is no compromise in this drive. To throat stab does he seek reply. So all now, to listen, will make the end of he. I do almost congratulate, unless beyond seeing, has definite say, differently. NICO 131

In courts country, fee. Such words if extracted, do lead to definite conviction. Our Earl, has rehearsed his role to perfection. And now plays with an actresses, abstract dimension * PURPUSIL Harken, how this whelp does try to lead on disgrace, by By Her Highness questioning, suggestion. AGRANCE For all the shoes of pity, I would not wear these , this night. For what will happen with this fight. PURPUSIL Nay, I’d like to see Her Highnesses face, eventually, as we, for answers truth wait. The end is sure nigh. * TARDINA The head from this Physicians boil, would seem pus near drawn. OPHIO I can hardly believe what I do hear, but all comes to us loud and clear. And in this maze, darkened glade, the masquerade 132

mask is uplifted. How see you this accomplishment, Milord. RULLA I shudder now for uncertainty afoot. Such demolition is in high office meetings plotted. Not in a garden besotted. * CORDYLIN Your ears I would cover, if I could, your Highness. ESCALLONIA Pray child, I have had your head to block out sight, but this answer is for what I came to hear. To learn truth, regardless of refrain. USSA It is arrogance distorted that we hear. Your good Sir, Physcian, would not disloyalty speak. His tongue is by education, and knowing bound. ESCALLONIA Nay, all of us are prone, when not in the presence of the 133

controlling throne. To put down, just or unjust causes, according to our wits versatility. According to what appears, it is loves bidding that is being called to answer. USSA Then fie, on love, if this is it’s way. ESCALLONIA Listen, he the she, or she the he, speaks again, as a nail driving for an answer clear. Certain I think directed for my listening ears. * 12. EXT PENDULA MANOR MAZE CENTRE NIGHT All the masquerade still concealed in bushes are gathered to watch Earl Stipa before the Spring flower garlanded arbour. Lanterns are still in the early crisp dawning of nights departure. Shadows conceal the closest groups and their attendants as Stipa arrives, dishevelled by those who have faultered his steps. STIPA 134

Page 139: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

My love. My dove. Before our bodies mingle. Who love you most, your fine lady fair. Or she, whose anxiety be our thorns cause. For certain with reply hasten, or I will die of obliteration. * CORDYLIN You will die for something, if I know, Her Highness. But not for that. ESCALLONIA Hush child, let the voice from the flower box answer clearly. * STIPA If your shyness my odes condemn, let your voice with truth speak out. Let your hand, my hands touching. Seek, unbutton, unlace the doublet of your curtain. So we can embrace, without a much. ( Osper’s hand appears out of the arbour. Grasping 135

it, STIPA covers it with passionate kisses. ) Our my sweetness, that’s the rub. Run your strong fingers through my hair. Feel how soft it is to fair. ( Osper tugs the wig forcefully, and were it not for STIPA holding fast the last strands. All would have been exposed.) Such passionate might. Would you my fair skin devour, in the ecstasy of this power. Lend me your hand, my Duke. This servant, my body, waits to serve, not rebuke. ( Phofia puts her hand out, as Osper before. Again STIPA covers it with kisses, to become gradually aware of the change. ) How different feels your skin, from right to left, and size, and softness. But do not fear, none of us are perfect made, or the liked be. Caress my brow, is my request now. ( Three hands begin to caress his brow, before he realises, being so deeply absorbed by the part. Those watching, who by lanterns light observe, begin to titter.) VOICES Ye gawds. He’s got three hands, my dear. Such extra must be a cheer. ( A forth hand appears.) Nay, four. What monster is before us hid. (STIPA is confused as all the hands quickly disappear.) 136

Page 141: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

VOICES Try for the top prize. Milady. What possesses he there. Wonder. * RUSCUS This cry of hands, the be. I cannot see for the tree. Those imbeciles do lampoon our schemes endeavour. NICO Neither can I also, Sir. I am the same situated as thee, and no informed angle is permitted me. * ESCALLONIA Sweet angel of mercy, Milord Physician has not four hands, as well he might with all our plights. This is a clever spoof, by another rogue emulating. And, if guesses be, the best of me, he is seated in yonder yew tree. ( Her eyes search out Lord Foutta.) I am now relaxed, and can with kindnesses mirth, 137

contain the evil intention of this shame. But I must undo with good times haste, lest this pantomime continue for lack of button, and cinder paste. * PURSUIL Something is up, for noises from the cup. At moment unknowing, tempers are now stowing. AGRANCE Serves them rightly, for what is occurring. I have no mercy for this determent. * TARDINA Husband, mine. Why the shouts of the hands. This is all beyond my understand. REECH By analytical fiend, something else has happened Without our knowing, and it taking time for showing. For your regards, to keep away from our Baron, and stay. 138

Page 143: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Will I hope be enough to save our day. RULLA I feel best depart before the chaining up start. OPHIO Cowardly husband, Milord. Nothing is certain disturbed. Only loud voices with no sense to curb. REECH There is plenty of smoke with this fire roaming. But to run, would be showing. TARDINA I am still at lose to understand what you have beheld, that now anticipation makes you slither. * STIPA My troth, do not hid , and dither. I am confused my, Duke Ono. In answer to your letter, you did I suppose come. And all was loves happiness, until this unseemly fun. Why tease me with such pranks. 139

Page 144: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Of your loyalty, there comes no answer. How can I, this lady fair, commit myself to such lair. Pray, Sir. If you have no time to spare, I will away. OSPER ( whispers to STIPA who stands close to the arbour ) STIPA Why do you question me, by whispers thus, my love of my letter hand. Doubt you that I could compose, what, from my aching heart did stem. OSPER ( whispers to STIPA ) STIPA Fie, your doubting causes me headache, a lady should not have to suffer such repose. Very well, for your ears only will I expose the source of my expressions uncertainty lacking. I did ask one, unnamed, to compose. But only, dear joy, because I feared my own passions would run away, and spill as laughable, from a stranger. So a moderator, I did employ. 140

Page 145: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

OSPER ( whispers to STIPA ) STIPA Why whisper your questions so, Duke Ono, we are alone. The name, your enquire. Fie, there can be no harm to our enticement, for me to speak. It was, Lord Bishop Deacon, about whose hand you seek. Gasps and cries of astonishment come from the hiding audience. * NICO Hearken, Sir. We are betrayed. RUSCUS By soothe, I do not believe what I am hearing. Our fool has been outwitted by our adversary physician. All will be exposed, the clergyman will surely blabber. NICO 141

Page 146: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Then all is lost and undone, the plot openly revealed. RUSCUS Fie, my fury is not quenched. This quacking whelp, who I set forth to demean, has by cunning unknown, the tables turned. What further can transpose to liquidate me. NICO And, I me, for sure the same. Because I ever welcome thy name. Behold, there comes more from this black nights centre. * STIPA Kind Sir, my love divine. Duke, Physician, implanted with my favour by your face. Think it not appropriate, that such a high spiritual esteem, I should employ, to give us a blessing, for what my feeble hand could not do. For, I a lady refined, must take notice from the sublime. Why toy so cruelly with my affections thrust, when between us languid the holy lust. 142

Page 147: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

* RUSCUS By Jove’s scrotum, our decoy, is with clever words amending. All may not be lost to exposure. For soothe betrayal is a bitter victory. NICO Ay, well Sir, do I also elate, as listening to learned counsels at the bar gate. Who with clever ploys, can twist a meaning, like a love toy. Our Earl, is no mean vagabond. But ably schooled in the art of deception. So receive all those who listen to the cleverness of his leading perception. * ESCALLONIA By angels myrtle dust flowers, my ears which earlier did burn with fire, now melt with this fine preposition. What before was a silly farce, has become a fight until the last. Only one part of this maze does not fit, and my intelligence is brittle displeased. Without certain knowledge of anything, we all amble in our own deceptions of everything that occurs, which we call life. Trust I my hearts calculate. 143

Page 148: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

I do not trust I, the feeling in my stomach where things do rot, and in creations soup stew, mix. Trust not that. For all I have gathered thus. In that floral arbour, with a refuge effigy hiding, is for certain not, my Duke Ono, Physician enlightened. Yet, the maze riddle if not. What trespasses so lightly to serve his cause, exoneration. While behind for sure, the cleverness of minds plan I know. This identity has no show. For all by folio’s laid out script, are entitled to the names of all the players. CORDYLIN Your, Lady, Ussa and I do certainly agree. But no face give, to a voice that whispers. USSA Ay, or body to hands, on arms that grow in triplets triptych branches. ESCALLONIA For certain then, there must be two persons inside making these amends. 144

Page 149: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

CORDYLIN And one, I do feel sure, of our tender sex, exciting. * STIPA Come good Sir, no longer play, for changing light does follow night. And dawns sprinkling mist will rob us of enchantments magical affection. Hasten my sweetheart to my lips, I hunger now for our first kiss. Open wide the curtain wall, and left our contentment fall. But first answer thou my question asked before. Does not parade with Her Highness, not be a face to hid contempt design. Too, through trusts opening, overthrow, a means for rebellions inverted scheme. A kiss is good payment, for truths unholy answer blessed. ( Phofia’s bare arm appears, and a tantalising finger beckons him seductively closer.) Uncertain am I, of your advances, kind Sir. Privy do not dilly with another silly. My aching does make me faint, and a headache nearly, my bed complaint. Serve me with your words, and I will to your body come, and be planted with your troth. ( Phofia continues to beckon.) Hesitancy does with me remain. If audience there were a watching, I would instantly 145

Page 150: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

come to your strong arms call. But, in the intimacy of our plight, anticipation does my feeble femininity hold. ( taken by his own delivery, STIPA goes closer to the arbour. Arms appear, and pull him inside. A great deal of movement within follows.) * ESCALLONIA Must I hid my face from this passion. Play or fight, I will not yet with might intercede. Oft entertainment fit’s the flow, and all for body, is the real show. * With much activity in the arbour, clothing is thrown out, including a fair hair wig. Finally, STIPA barely clad. He lays bedraggled in the light of his hanging lantern. STIPA Woe, I am undone. All is lost. Whither can I fly. Silence VOICES 147

Page 151: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

That’s no lady. Nor, my wife. Laughter begins with tittering followed by calling, booing and hissing from the masquerade hiding in the maze. Sounds increase and become unruly. * NICO We are exposed now for certain. RUSCUS Pratts ass, nay. What the voice cannot accomplish, the fury of my steel, will this vagabond seal. * FOUTTA ( aloud to Ruscus who he can overhear ) Hark just a few moments longer, dear Sir. Let these antic’s be secured. * In temper’s demand, Ruscus is about to drive his sword blatantly through the arbour covering. Judge Nico holds him back. NICO Strike not this way, I pray. 148

Page 152: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Rages uproar cares not for the soar. Regret will forever be your companion. RUSCUS Hold I now this parry, and for knowing only will tarry. Duke Ono, has been my thorn, since the very day he was born. * ESCALLONIA Comes the time I know to marry, or blood will mar the beams of all the stars. Call my guard. CORDYLIN Attended too, and ready waiting, alert. Your Highness. ESCALLONIA They will act upon my hands advice, waiting quiet for this thrice. * RUSCUS 149

Page 153: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

I open wide the curtains. Reveal yourself for the last time, knave. No more dreaming will be your hiding stave. You are exposed for laughter’s thorn. ( Sir Osper is truely exposed, barely clad, with Phofia, the same.) Ye gawds, it is the Clown. Osper. Where be the charlatan leech. Ono. This sight cannot be. And the wench who carried the letter content. This betrayal has no fury, to spark violence. I am broken. ( silence and uncertainty follows, as Ruscus sinks onto one knee in despair. The hour chimes. 4 ) Even time denounces me. Nay. Nay. This is no play. I will be avenged. ( he rises angrily with his sword to thrust ) I warned you Clown. Before the night be through. * ESCALLONIA Enough Ruscus. Enough. 150

Page 154: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

( she gives her signal ) FOUTTA Stay this execution sharp. (armed attendants appear from all quarters. Ruscus and Nico are apprehended and disarmed. ) OSPER O faith. Sweat I for my dangle. With this maid now, I can further mangle. ( they embrace fondly ) PENDULA Stand aside for Her Highness approaches. These occurrences must be clarified. Fast light all your beacons. Before dawns dusk, does this maze full display. Let all masks of the night be put away. For the coming of the new day. Lords and Lady’s who do attend. Witness that Her Highness, will make the mend. ( a parade appears led by Escallonia, escorted by her attendants, and others. While musicians assemble, and all enter the maze centre) 151

Page 155: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ESCALLONIA Bring forth the offenders, that I may upon their faces gaze. And other apprehended who would stand so innocently by. (Reech and Rulla are brought to stand beside Ruscus and Nico. Also apart. Bishop Deacon ) Now, what is this sorry sight I have before me peering. For entertainment and wit, a cruel night does fit. Expose ye, yourselves, to yourselves for what you be. Fie, the very what, still escapes me. By this love meeting date, you did contrive to demean the innocent of life’s bread. For all sick we surely be, by varying degree. Memories small space of youth, is no escape. They be but, foible handed down. And middling age with its crop, may be able to suspend the past as experience, if minding is their competence. Then comes the rub upon the withering skin, and deaths vain mantle, shows the sin. And underlines without fashion, the reward of life wasted passion. The what, that I see before me now. Are we not all made to judge, not by that hiding in our glove. In our shoe, or in our knock, designated by the clock. But by overcoming, without production, the bothering lies in our heads , conduction. How speak you. Baron Ruscus. Knowing you well as I do. 152

Page 156: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Of your mother’s case, and her mouth’s envious face. Her creation that you are, know you not what you cannot see. As ring leader of this Lordly bunch. Can you speak to defend. Remembering that it is I only who can make your amends. RUSCUS Your Highness, commiseration do I seek, for I am guilty of being weak. But no strength can I find, to give meaning to my mind. ESCALLONIA Then, do I slap your wrists, you naughty boy, or bind in chains, as a toy. For you would with your sword plunder, and turn our land into thunder. Then think you on this well. In. Loves night garden. So bright. Where flowers and plants do peacefully grow, and creatures, by the laws of their making, flourish in the show. With shortest passages to blend from bud to bloom for us to see. Ever gardened by the power that does bid us all to flower. Where kindness rules with certainty, and knows when to flee. For measures just. 153

Page 157: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Where bird and creature in the bleak winds of winter’s barren months. Seek food and shelter. Aye, adjust as we. Bits and scraps to keep the balance. And smooth over all without pretence, or regal spread, as life’s empty bridal bed. How speak you now. If grasp you what I mean, concerning this great scene. If harmony we cannot find, with everything so blessed. Then truth will make light of our tattered chest, when we all lay down to rest. Ours is to learn, and by mistakes to overcome. For mistakes do on their own to all, well appear, of that you can have no fear. The final ends glory, until the likes of us it can trust. Until no longer to others our own suffering we extend. Without brains, looting lottery to expend. Your fine defence, Sirs. Before I make decision, to prune early, such a crop, or pick withered flowers for decorations poor table top. Or make mulch of your offence, so nothing can be wasted. What loose bond has promoted this conspiracy, Sir. Political lord a leaping. Jumping times idleness away with false power, and corruptions intrigue. And a Judge, who does bend and mend, and bend laws, trivial conspiracies to his liking. A scientist of brains delving fame, who would 154

ferret out life’s very sustenance to maim. And later, to the will of private flaw, change without truths confirmation door. And you, Bishop with your flock, recently added. A shepherd or a sham. One of the holy lamb pretending, eating all without fending. Based by oils sacred trance amended. Rituals, ever acting game, the composer of this pathetic lovers encounter. I weary before such an attendance to harm, with such a collected plot. Now, enlighten me and say peace really lies over all. And you Sir, from the ground, pretending a woman to be, dressed in all a ladies livery. Twisting words ornate, a serpents forked tongue grate. What have you from this earth’s floor sore, no clothes to wear, without a store. Sirs, can this teaching change anything. Better defend thyself from all these claims convincingly. Or for certain you will go to where no peace can bestow. NICO Your Highness, with humble respects full meaning. I know I speak for all of us offending. ESCALLONIA 155

Page 159: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

To turn my head the other way Sir, is what you really say. Fie, I pray for such outrage old, be best left to the bold. And you other’s head bending, is the sorry you are intending, which means nothing. Sorry, the word flaunting. Unless yourself, sorry, you can forgive. The punishment must fit this difficult crime for explaining, until more understanding is obtaining. Guards. Remove these from my sight, for detainments confiscation. Exit. Baron Ruscus. Sir Nico, Sir Reech. Lord Rulla. Bishop Beacon under armed-guard. ESCALLONIA Fair, sweeter smells the dawn air and kindness doughty, does smooth my brow, without those louts. Lord Pendula, my noble host, unpretending. Let us with this nights remaining gladness continue. And absent gaiety, good intent bring you. Bid music commence, and lets us all be gay. This can be another may-day. Music plays happily, lanterns swing with light. Dancing commences through the maze. Wooing. Prancing. Laughter and games awaken with the dawn. 156

CORDYLIN With post haste your Highness, I away do go and find. To return soon with this noble, Sir, unoffending mind. Exit. Cordylin. ESCALLONIA Now my dear, Ussa, a small errand also for this night. Before another chime, I will well heal the ailments of this thing, called time. ESCALLONA Yes, yes child. Get on with it. ( Ussa brings Foutta and Hakonech, from the other side of the floral bower, where Osper and Phofia, still spill into each other’s gaze.) FOUTTA Yea, fault knows me well. With such frivolity used to cloak darkness dangerous intention. I was vain foolish to explain, action being necessities claim. As I was mistaken, I beg forgiveness for my lightning, and may my humble apology strike sincere. ESCALLONA Privy, Milord. With these theatrical ploys meaning, your thoughts were only kindness intending. And you dear, Captain. For sure your office was protecting. It was the apprehension of my doubt, not knowing if my Physician, was close involved. As Ruscus believed. So nearly believed I. Although, always upon doubts benefit did I draw. FOUTTA 159

Page 163: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

There was no other way to expose, clean and clear to all present, far and near. Who from gossips exaggerations elaborate waste, had judge and jury tried, and guilty found, with bitter taste. To come to this place, only for spite and scorn. And laughter tease, empty heads to please. ESCALLONIA I understand your intention, and use of May floral fame, for well it did serve to divert the blame. HAKONECH Our direct was to reprimand, and save all innocence from harm. ESCALLONIA Pray do not defend, Sir. I am with weapons understanding well equipped, despite the absence of my whip. By stage props clever ruse, you did calculate the muse to use. And if this your truth be, then our talk in content, shall cease. And I can let you both go your way in peace. Exit. Foutta and Hakonech bowing. 160

Page 164: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

USSA Does your, Highness wish me any other errand to perform. ESCALLONIA Ay, sweet girl, you read my mind, for certain you are knowing the real purpose of my scourges cleansing. USSA Your Highness, has enlightened me with instruction, to see clearly what is lost to others. ESCALLONIA The couple in the arbour bower pending, turtledoves love. Who in the box did hid to give meaning a lid. Cap their spoon and bring them hence. To recompense the attraction of their games action. ( Ussa brings Stipa and Phofia before Escallonia) ESCALLONIA ( speaks to Phofia ) Without ceremonies endless bows and scrapes, pray listen. Whose waiting gentle maid are thee. For maid I 161

presume you must be serving. PHOFIA Your Highness, Phofia am I called. And I serve in the house of the Judge, Sir Nico. Ussa bursts into laughter. ESCALLONIA ( smiling ) No longer Phofia, will Sir Nico, your special service demand. From now, you will enter my instructions hand. Ussa, here, a lady’s attending skills will teach. And proper performance reach. Am I understood. PHOFIA Thank you, your Highness. ( she curtsy’s prettily) ESCALLONIA As for you, Sir Osper, who they call the clown. Your clowning for sure, should wear a crown. Ussa, bring me hence. Nay, Ussa and Phofia, bring me a floral wreath from the bower. 162

Page 166: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Happily, Ussa and Phofia gather a string of roses. ESCALLONIA Kneel Sir, for already a sword point has touched, to be garlanded and reunited. ( he is wrapped in roses ) Arise, Sir Clown. Cheering and appropriate music fills the dawn air of the maze. Exit. Osper and Phofia, hand in hand. Earl Stipa stands by the arbour, frightened to move. ESCALLONIA Now Earl, you affrighted. Last, but not least blighted. Who would a woman’s burden carry. What have you now to say for your conduct unsightly. STIPA Mumble I, so humble this plea. With uncertainty of my position, where to this truth can I only swear. Milord, Baron, did at his behest, a role for me to play request. For reason of his own displeasure, to which I did condescend to assist, without any knowledge of the twist. My charm lack, has always caused me to pursue, 163

the greatest talents allowed to bestow. Within such a woman garb fostered. Was I, as from a strange womb nearly come. That is my only self pity plea, ashamedly deep to displease, and make failure my pain. ESCALLONIA Earl, your dialogues leniency esteem, does intrigue me. As does the correct punishment of this nasty plot, disguised as fun and real liking. You a noble true, must your own blame take. Or, why have two legs upon which to stand. Others may with force compel. But, the decision always is with our faults to dwell. To either overcome and stand firm, to runaway. Or as you obviously did, participate, despite the speaking of your uncertain heel and toe. So you must take responsibility for some of this plot. STIPA Your Highness, most merciful grace, I ask upon my face, as I stand bare. For the innocents judgement chair. ESCALLONIA Then with this bent triangle, how am I to see your prance. 164

Page 168: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Do I reward thee, for a performances perfection, with words and sub-plots bouncing. Or, do I scold you, as naughty girl whose tomboy pranks, have no event, except to vent. Unless you change your vest for ever, and start to live a sprightly life on tether. Aside, my dilemma continues. Do I command as your conspirators, apprehension. Must I rise with iron fist clenched, and strike the pimples from your spleen. STIPA Fay, I ask mercy, your Highness rare, that I be allowed to continue to share. ESCALLONIA Is your mercy, impudence unfair. Since so many have viewed your seat, and earned the treat of their own reflections prancing. Away Sir, I do despair. Let others see in you, my charity. But, if charity for weakness they replace. Then let them learn these old bones, are not so frail. That I am fair, to make compare, with the justice of my chair. And there know the totality of supreme commands mighty force, goes beyond the sound of my voice. Away Sir. 165.

Or the sword stroke will be your next part to play. Exit. Earl Stipa. Enter. Lady Pendula, with her daughter. TATRA If your Highness pleases, may I present my daughter, Lady Duotavia. I have with fingers sign and symbols, informed her of your Highnesses kindness, regarding a cure for her afflictions. ( Duotavia stands puppet stiff before them, expressionless, and obedient to her mother’s will and command ) ESCALLONIA Child, come before me pray, into the fuller light of day. That I may see your countenance. Let no shyness you inhibit, for good friends we will be. ( without hesitation, signs or symbols, Duotavia presents herself in the full lantern light of the maze centre.) There, my Lady Tatra, your daughter already has a mind to understand my wishes .And obeys without hesitations lose. 166

Page 170: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

TATRA Privy heaven, she must by your lips, a reading make. A learning, she has shown of little interest, or understanding, I pray. Until now. ESCALLONIA Then already for greatness, prepare. Now, sweet Duotavia, turn slowly with grace, that I may see the cause of your face. There, see how easily she moves and does display herself. TATRA Amazing, is the word. PENDULA Forgive this imposition. But your Highnesses healing presence shows a change I have never seen. TATRA We are both overawed and speechless now. 167

Page 171: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ESCALLONIA Tilt your head my dear, and raise your chin, so the bows of these nightlights, may slumber on your cheeks. ( Duotavia moves as requested with a change of expression, and stands statuesque.) My lips have even more poetry that I have given them credit. Without sound, but movement flow, to enlighten us all so. Now with quietness reading, turn slowly, as though before glass to well earned bed. ( Duotavia turns a full circle ) My request has become a paslm of loveliness. such exquisite beauty have I never beholden. A rainbow here sings, with a flowers perfection. Such a lustre against storms darkest backdrop, I see to earth has before me descended. Divine are her lines. A paragon sublime. Comeliness with difference to juxstapose. Visions intelligence that can never dim. Here stands beautification in its frame of refinements charm, nectars precious rest for eyes weary, to visit and see hope, eternal. Tatra, my dear. While it may seem too cruel to say, but my long experience does give meaning to this day. Better perhaps that this beautiful child, never words utter, or hears. So many girls supporting loveliness, had no means to hear communicate, or speak. Their arrogances gorgeous power strange, that squeaking voices, they also believe beautiful. 168

Page 172: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Sounds that obliterate sights holy nuptial. Vain hyena’s shrieking high pitch to boot, lending no intelligence to the fend. TATRA Your Highness, pray instruct us upon what we should do. ESCALLONIA Since nothing ventured, nothing can be gained, hurdles that do come for truth to overcome. I have sent for my Physician with hastens urgency. My trust in his ability has no greater grace. By his hand and learning, my own life, long ago frailty cruel, would have withered away. So we will wait for his arrival, and complete examination. To see if he can accomplish this feat, of voice and hearing. Aye, and beauties trick, do not tarry, all things can be changed with trainings instruction. Enter : Cordylin with Duke Ono. CORDYLIN Your Highness, Duke Ono, as requested. 169

Page 173: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ESCALLONIA Aye, with such timing as this, in maze centre, psychic arena dispirit. Something surely will be achieved. Here is my dear Physician Apothecary, Duke Ono. Come closer Sir. And I will explain the reason for my urgent calling. ONO Your Highness, wish is my command. Nothing I pray has disturbed your constitution, with the changes of the night. ESCALLONIA Nay Sir, I am fit and well. Better than all my expectations prone, that tell. Thanks to you. There is a patient, I want you to shortly meet, and examine and treat, with all the skills at your command. Healing is my promise aim by you. No expensive balms from earths remotest corners must you skimp, if necessary to find a cure. But for sure, why explain this to you, who for certainty will find a way where all others, high and low, have failed. 170

Page 174: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ONO Your Highness shows great faith in the properties of my ability to cure all ills. ESCALLONIA Yea, you are the panacea dream incarnate, and it is the rainbow, whose life we must be granted. ONO The rainbow. For this, your Highness, please must clear. The sun is her noble peer. The rain her medicine. ESCALLONA Then I am her patron. The reason for my analogical tale, you will soon know. But the poor child’s ailment must go. ONO You speak then of a patient human, a child so bleak, that none can recommend cure. 171

Page 175: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ESCALLONIA Aye, none can make her speak. ONO And dumbness, is that also her shrew. ESCALLONA Praise be for understanding. Now for your encounter. Duotavia, my child. ( Duotavia has her back to them, and does not appear to hear ) TATRA Daughter, Her Highness, does call you to her side. Her fine Physician to meet. ( TATRA speaks with signs and symbols, but Duotavia does not respond ) ESCALLONIA Have no distress, Tatra dear. If your daughters loveliness, the rainbow be incarnated. This old mountain, with her giant hands will go to her. For certain, when she sees my lips move, she 172

will understand our purpose. Although her body language does twinkle differently now. Escallonia with Duke Ono, followed by Lord and Lady Pendula, approach Lady Duotavia, who has her head bent. Come now child, let shyness pass you by. Raise your head, so this introduction I can make. TATRA She is overawed by the attention, with a mother’s kindness I will adjust. ( TATRA bends before her daughter making signs. Eventually after failure, she looks to Escallonia and Ono ) Readily, Milady does obey, with some help from my sway. I have in detail explained the reason for this season. So her delight, I would imagine, has been flawed by the possibility of the ability, to hear and speak. ESCALLONIA So it would seem. Now leave her with me to converse by the reading of my lips, and the capability of her eye. Which I now perceive is more than fly. My dear, this is Duke Ono, Physician. Who I have given leave to help you. 173

Page 177: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

ONO ( bowing graciously) Your servant, Mam. ESCALLONIA While a man, he also be, your confidence, and full co-operation does he seek. Do you understand my plan. If so. Nod. ( Duotavia remains momentarily rigid, before, but after glimpsing Ono smiling, nods gingerly ) There dear, Tatra, your daughter embarks upon the cure with uncertain anticipations, co-operation. but that is to be expected. Now, Duotavia are you clear. The Duke, my private Physician, an examination will make, of symptoms passed arising, and effect for sure a cure. So be of good cheer and smile, so the frown of night can be put to flight. ( Duotavia smiles gingerly ) There Sir, do not note, how beauty spreads like the dawn. A rainbow to match. ONO Your Highness, for sure I have noticed, even if I were blind the same. A wonderour smile, her touching beam. ESCALLONIA 174

Page 178: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

So be it settled, with no more ado. Take the girl, and do what you must do. ( She speaks openly to Duotavia ) Now child, have no fear, his doctorate will have your throat afloat to speak, and ears the oars to match. The waves of life soon to ride, we all pray without a catch. Sir, a word aside. ( ESCALLONIA gestures to be alone with ONO.) Now, my kind Physician so learned, what think you already, pray. Can she be cured of this mortal prey. ONO For certain with examination of her parts, my art will reveal the nature of her ill. Already my hopes are high. So, for present, may I leave it to the sky, and with my studies accumulation, clarify all questions that abound. This Lady, very fair, has a mystery lurking, about which I already do care. ESCALLONIA Very well, my Physician. Clearly do I know the means of your intentions prescription, and I wish that without a dither, you will commence hither. The night airs change to dawn, I feel arising in my bones, as you did warn, and kindly enquire. 175

Page 179: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

So this masquerade now united, will to the Manor return. To continue with the partying. There no cause for here to stay. While you dear Sir, attending, can use yonder arbour bower for your consultant couch. That is plain, my order to vouch. ONO Your servant, mam. There is no problem here present, to which a fruitful answer cannot be discovered. ESCALLONIA Come, Lord Pendula. Lady Tatra, my dear. Your daughter, Lady Duotavia, will here for examination and consultation stay. While all of us do go away. To leave the gardening to its healing medication planting. PENDULA With deepest gratitude, for the honour you bestow, by your Physician’s mending. We on our knees bending, before your Highness, generous grace lending. We will our masquerade ball take, with mornings feast, music, dancing, merriment, and lanterns 176

entrance bright. Return from where we came, wearisome, maybe, for all the pain. Now, exuberant for the course of healing for our sweet, Duotavia. ESCALLONIA Forward, the Manor’s warmth to seek. Farewell. Exeunt all: ( except Duotavia and Ono ) 13. EXT. PENDULA MAZE CENTRE DAWN ________________________________________________ Now stands the Lady fair, head bowed, awaiting. While uncertain of the real scheme. ONO Comes the time for the greatest opportunity to serve, and not flee. Employment for my earned fee. Stand I now beside the Lady, and wonder. Can she hear the footsteps of my word, speak. 177

Page 181: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

The softness of my mouths voice, as I to myself listen. Or am I but, a buttress man, doomed to ever wither from a fan. I will stand purposely, so she, my lips movements cannot share. Even though her head be bowed beneath her hair. For test, if this is the must, that must apply. Or games torment not to reply. A learning patronage designated, beyond fames fortunes unfortunately related. If she can hear, now hear me now. Lovely Duotavia, who makes me rapture, these words from my heart, for you to capture. Escaped and different from your swinging line, loves mortal lost out of time. Accept my tribute to you, unrequited and what ever should unfold be by loves crystal moulded. Observe you, in this early changing night light, dawns twilight dusk, approaching. See how the lanterns of the masquerade move happily. Fireflies in the breezes wind, encircling maze’s twisted hedged locked time. And hear sweet music, embellishing the sublime. Hearken to the gay voices chime. Melodies cry, to dance and climb. All like flowers, so pretty, in rows to grow, a pity. Leaves and blossoms made to shine, and show the wonder of loves own night garden. While we, dearest Duotavia and I, in our set place do wait, for the accomplishment of our fate. Hear, my sweetest Lady fair, is your head still beneath your hair. 178

Page 182: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

In you hiding, do you vainly twinkle as a sign, to my loves possibility sublime. For what other cause, could have put us together thus. With trust and no endless squabble fuss. Whose hand, but love, that alone understands, could have made this design, as it first began. To this second chance, surely you must concede. Can you hear my voice from beneath your hair so fair. O my words you do abide, swear devotion to our plight, and commitment to the fight. Sweetest heart it is not too late, forget obligation to the fate, for these but comfort be, lost to the anguish of another day hence, that never comes even for recompense. Now as the music grows mute and dim, silence does encroach amending. And only my lonely voice is wending. See, precious Duotavia, how more the night does fade, and morn the tree tops horizon share. Earths bower of leaves living wreath that knows no dying, only eternities crying. Rainbows diadems to please, let them sparkle with delight, and banish all that would harm your inner sight. Help me from the ageing of your plight. The creatures who did lurk, as from your beauties head, did shirk. The blame to hid with deception wit, trickery. Banished by your miseries hurt. No longer present to sort. Or pray, beauty divine, did they return to you, and enter. 179

Page 183: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

And penetrate the mischief of your fate. If so, alack, you most surely cannot hear or tell, with their inner rumbling, as they conspire to make your morrow’s hell. Or beauty, loves hoping dove, faiths kindly messenger. Are they still banished, and away with no more chance to deceive your play. Are you now made blessed by this scam, and no longer reduced into ham. O, such wonder is that thought, with nothing else but centre’s calm to thwart. For, if this is truthfully speaking, my words. O, my heart, you can hear, and will for certainty, eventually reply, when clear. How speak you now. ( Duotavia remains silent, her head still bent ) Shame be the pity. But I will not despair. All is not lost, when care is aware. I have made my statement, to thyself. So be the try. This Duke Ono, Physician Apothecary, to hear also. As keep I to favours pledge, while still, ponder rings in the silence of our plight. My Lady, your hand, that I may begin my task, while two in one, plain to view. An honest face without a mask. ( ONO take Duotavia gently by the hand, and leads her gracefully to the arbour. In his arms he lifts her tenderly onto the bower ) For certain, I still have no knowledge whether my Lady fair. Beautiful as the coming days dawn, unborn. Pretty as a rainbows promise. 180

Page 184: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

Can speak or hear. Only for sure, if true she can. She has been listening like a ram. The ram to play. To tease my longing hearts blind obedience. I will carefully examine her, with the searching certainty of my profession. Your long fair tresses I lift with already knowing. How speak you of this matter now. ( Duotavia remains silent, but cooperative. Like a child by its mother, ordered to obey. ) No answer breaks her soft lips calling. Yet so near am I to paradise. Our two hearts as one must surely entwine this peak. Close, into her eyes I gaze. Such pools of innocence’s bare delight to swim. Or, in murky depths of cellular slime, do those entity fiends, skulking resistors, hid and watch. With cruelty claws in human earth cry. Mine. Precious, open your mouth wide, that I may your throat explore. ( Duotavia’s lips remain firmly tight ) How very odd, my lips to her eyes would seem not to speak. Yet, to Her Highness, did obey. What force must I use to penetrate such sweet lips, blossoms bowed. Surely not, with fingers gripping pull, enough to frighten even a fool. The answer seems a pleasure sparkle renowned, like dew, when nights casement is through, to touch the ground. Draw I closer aching, without due shame. For noble is my hearts arrowed aim. 181

Page 185: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

My lips to touch. ( he kisses her softly, and makes an insertion with his tongue. To which she responds without recourse, or change of attitude ) Such gentleness this caress, though opening wider would be more acceptable for this display. ( he kisses her again, pressing up her bottom lips, followed by the top ) Ay, that is better. Loves harvest by a delightful rub, lips moistures passion ignited. Pray, kindness is my reward. Lo, my Lady, now shows an eagerness to obey, with understanding from the touch so gentle. I will examine her mouth carefully without any hurtful prodding or awkwardness uncomfortable. Hm. Hm. My strange noises vocabulary so close, would make someone with hearing surely choke. With laughter’s bursting, or agitations nursing. Yet, like beauties statue, she does remain. Neither frozen or puppetry with mechanical refrain. Still warm and tender. Voluptuous to heaving breast, a lovers enlistment head to rest. With everything else so tight, and refined. I will close her mouth with the same define. I must then contemplate, the combinations of the variation on her dumbness theme. Forsooth, there seems no deviation, from any other relation. By all the schemes that follow, her voice can have no hollow stone blocking, and should be agile for plenty of pitch knocking. 182

Page 186: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.

But then to follow, does she still pretend, or are these fiends, still at the very end unstable. ( he holds her hand to his heart ) Have no fears beloved, if your ears you will incline. ( again he lifts her fair hair, and tilts her head with ease, standing firm to peer. Her body pressed tightly against his.) What magic does her bosom upon my body perform, I do tremble and shake and flush, yet it be she whose mistake I encounter. Her ear, such a pleasant auditory canal, hid life, a flower, in hairs soft dell. The lobe so smooth to touch, and tympanum to drum, and receive only the holiest sounds. Speak I so close, that here my voice does echo as down a well, and I have only the nicest, most interesting things to tell. Of my adulation and great pull, to serve you always to the full. So wherever else you may dwell, if this the truth be. You may my loving know, as my blush, the feel of our bodies as a rush. This your right auricle to balance your face, and to reverse and sound. I will make cohesion coherent. So privy squeeze my hand. ( ONO speaks this to himself and Duotavia squeezes his hand ) Odd, this is strange. No sound have I yet uttered aloud to comprehend. Yet from equilibrium’s orb. You do make a haste to amend. Then by answer, I will surely, closest to a kiss as possible, breath the words of my own breast, that 183

Page 187: Loves Night Garden - Ronald Hull · CHARACTERS ( in order of appearance.) BARON RUSCUS, the Chancellor. LORD FOUTA , the Protector. SIR OSPER, the Clown. SIR NICO, the Judge.
