BEYOND THE WALLSW h a t H a p p e n s H e r e D o e s n ’ t S t a y H e r e

Thanksgiving… A day of giving thanks. It is typically supposed to be a time of togetherness and gratitude – to be thankful around that beautiful bounteous table shared with those we love most. For many of us this year, our traditional Thanksgiving get-togethers and Thanksgiving dinners, gathered ‘round the hearth and table will look different. Celebrating the Holy Eucharist may not be the same, with those who wouldn’t dream of missing mass not being able to attend in person.

We give thanks for them though. Thanks for our spous-es, our children, our jobs and our health. Our friends and our family. We are thankful simply for waking up each morning to another day. We are forever grateful for all that God gives us, some of which we may not un-derstand or appreciate at the time.

Some of us are worried or angry that God has given us a global pandemic to try to deal with and understand. We try to figure out how to carry out each day, ever know-ing that God wouldn’t give us anything that we couldn’t handle – although we may not think that at the time.

Some of us aren’t thankful for a lot of things this past year with all of the curveballs we have had thrown at us. It has been a tiresome, ever changing year. Exhausting in fact. Never had we had such unforeseen challenges tossed our way and having no idea what to do with them once we were faced with them.

This is when we need to dig deep and reach within - and way beyond the recesses of our minds and our hearts. We have been brought up to be thankful for all that God has created. We have been taught to be thank-ful, regardless of the uncertainties, and I do believe we are! We are strong Catholics. We aren’t fickle. We don’t waiver. We’re faithful and there is so much strength in that faith!

There has been plenty of time for soul searching during 2020 with so much time spent at home. A lot of time for prayer. Loads of time to go over in our mind just what we are thankful for. If you’ve been inside our church, at some point you would have seen some of our ‘guests’ from De Mazenod Door Outreach. Those who are poor, marginalized, homeless, addicted. Those who are bro-ken in so many ways. That alone should be a reminder of what we all need to be thankful for.

If you are fearful this Thanksgiving, please know that God is with you. There’s a lot of fear out there, every-where we look. So, for the rest of 2020, let’s just be thankful.

Thanksgiving… it’s a day of giving thanks. It’s as simple as that. Let’s take a moment to thank our Creator for all of our gifts and our blessings.

An Attitude of Gratitude

Is it the weekend already!? Another busy week at the Door!

• Well, we did it! Remember our pickle donation from last week from Pickled Canadian? We made the deep fried pickles! Okay… well, we didn’t, but The Columbus Club of Hamilton did! They also did hundreds and hundreds of chicken nug-gets to go with them. Under Grand Knight Dave Rogerson’s leadership, we were able to serve a deliciously different lunch on Monday. Lots of “mm, mm goods” from the crowd outside. Thank you Knights of Columbus, Council 1454! You guys rock!

• Thank you to those who have contacted us about assisting us with daily pickups of food. It is super appreciated!

• A big shout out of THANKS to Natalie Mancini, one of our amazing ‘background’ volunteers! Na-talie works on many of our projects behind the scenes and we are so grateful to her for all she does for us! Thank you Natalie!

• Happy Thanksgiving to all of our volunteers, do-nors & supporters! We could not do this without you!!

As Thanksgiving approaches, I can’t help but think how this has been a year of reflection for us all. We have received an opportunity to slow down, retreat and discern. Though this is something many of us long for, we rarely commit the time to do it. The way that it happened makes we wonder if the reflection was different due to it being thrust upon us, as it was this year. I believe it was. I believe there was a certain vulnerability felt by all as we faced a global pandemic. Would we or our family or friends get sick? How long would we be shut down? Would we have our jobs to go back to? Most things happening to us were beyond our control. However, isn’t it interesting that many of us had felt that we were in control before everything turned upside down?

I think that one of the reasons we long for opportunities of quiet is so that we can take time to listen to what God is saying to us; whether we realize it or not. To hear what God is calling us to. This year we had a chance to discern our place in society and even how society itself functions; especially as we were called to care for one another, and be responsible for each other’s welfare. To know that we have had the opportunity to slow down and hear God’s voice is something that we should all be tremendously thankful for. We have been able to think and pray about what really is important to us, as well as what are some things that we can let go of in our lives. I think that

when we are able to slow down and be present in the moment, we remember that God, rather than ourselves, is in charge of what will happen in our lives.

I pray that we continue to make the time to reflect further on what we may have started. My hope is that through more reflection we will discern what is truly important to us in our lives, as well as how God calls us to live out our lives in the hope of the resurrection. Let us all be thankful for the gifts we have received during this time of pandemic and always.

Here at St. Patrick’s we are blessed to have the Felician Sisters as active members of the parish. They are our prayer warriors, lifting up all of the prayer intentions we receive from our parishioners and friends. The founder of the Felician sisters is Blessed Mary Angela Truszkow-ska, and her feast day is on October 11. She was beatified in 1993. Pictured here is a relic of Blessed Mary Angela. Please lift us a prayer with us in honor of Blessed Mary Angela’s feast day.

“God our Father, we praise and thank you for the gift of Blessed Mary Angela, who lived your will in faith and trust, and lived your love in service to others. We pray, in confidence that through her intercession you will grant us the favours we request, through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

In August 2020, St. Patrick Parish applied for a grant from the Ex Corde Foundation of the Diocese of Ham-ilton. The foundation offers grants to Roman Catholic charities registered under the Income Tax Act of Can-ada.Our hope in applying for the grant was to gain funds that would go towards the continuous development of our virtual ministry and live-streaming efforts. This past week we received news that our grant appli-cation was approved for $6000! Thank you, Ex Corde!

EX CORDE GRANT APPROVAL

ONE BODY WITH MANY MEMBERSIn a very special way, we would like to honor one of our parishio-ners: Ramona Lacsamana! Ramona has been a parishioner here at St. Patrick’s for a very long time. She has dedicated so many loving hours to our parish. From setting up for and serving during mass-es, to cleaning and maintaining the sanctuary, to volunteering at the Rest and Hygiene Station, to surprising the pastoral team with delicious food here and there – she has undoubtedly been such a blessing to us! As a token of our gratitude, Ramona will be present-ed with a statue of St. Patrick’s (similar to the one at the front of our church) at the 9 AM mass on Sunday.

Ramona, we are so grateful for your generosity and dedication. Your humility and heart for service is such an inspiration to us. We know that God is smiling down upon you and that He will shower you and your family with the greatest of blessings.

“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body – Jews or Greek, slaves or free – and all were made to drink of one Spir-it. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” 1 Corinthians 12: 12-14, 27

We will be beginning our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initi-ation for Adlts) journey on Wednesday, Oct 28 at 7 PM. Due to the pandemic, we will be conducting the classes virtually via Zoom. If you are interested in joining, please contact the parish office and leave your name and email address. A member of the team will reach out to you with more information as well as the Zoom link. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact JC Asuncion at [email protected] or call the office (905-522-9828) as ask for her. We encourage you to take the courageous step towards the promise of the greatest joy there is!
