October is National Cyber Security Month, and UIC’s Academic Computing and Communications Center has been highlighting how to spot phishing attacks.
Cyber criminals use phishing to obtain log-in credentials and other personal information, such as Social Security numbers. And no matter how savvy you are, it’s not always easy to spot phish.
“Spear phish” emails can be especially difficult to detect, because the attackers have done their homework. They’ve researched the university and know enough that they can sometimes seem official. The senders may use familiar terms or mention specific UIC programs and websites. They also try to match the appearance – design, logo, colors, etc. – of official UIC communications.
The ACCC security website (security.uic.edu/awareness/), outlines some things to look for
in messages, addresses and log-in pages so you can tell phish from official.
After you take a minute to review some clever tactics, you can put your keen eyes to the test.

Stay connected with webmail If you’re having trouble with Outlook or if you just aren’t in front of your computer, but still need to access your email,
you might not know you have an alternative. Your email can be accessed from any browser by going to
http://webmail.peoria.uic.edu. Once there you will see the following login:
Your username will be your netID and your password will be your EMAIL PASSWORD. Once those have been entered
correctly, you will be able to access your email through your browser.
It is important to remember to use your email password. This is an important distinction. Most of you have probably
made your netID password (the one you use to log in to your computer) and your email password the same, but if you
have changed your netID password, your email password does not change with it by default. If you find that you cannot
remember your email password, go to the UICOMP home page and navigate to the CIS department page. From there,
click the Set Outlook Password link to reset it. See the link below, highlighted with a red box:

Backups are running behind the scenes
This little white flag can cause some panic for users. The message “set up backup” leads some users to believe their files
are not being backed up, especially when a user clicks on it and see window below
Under Maintenance it says “Your files are not being backed up.” This warning is present because the backup that is part
of the Windows operating system has not been set up. It is not necessary to have set up, because we do not store any
files on the computer hard drive, labeled C:
Your computer is part of a network, and all files are stored on that network.
You can select “Turn off messages about Windows Backup” just to stop seeing the warning.
Rest assured: Your files are being backed up.

Resetting your web browser Web pages not loading correctly? Downloads not downloading? Frustrated? Just reset!
Every once in a while your internet browser will get caught in a bind and not be able to figure itself out. There are
certain ways to fix specific issues, but the easiest way is to just reset all of your browser settings.
Reset Internet Explorer
1. Go to Tools
2. Click Internet Options
3. Click the Advanced tab and click the Reset… button
4. Click Reset in the window that pops up. You may have to restart internet explorer for the settings to take effect.

Reset Google Chrome
1. Click the three dots in the top right corner of the window
2. Click Settings
3. Click Show advanced settings toward the bottom of the page
4. Click the Reset settings button
5. Click the reset button in the window that appears
Reset Mozilla Firefox
1. In Mozilla Firefox go to this webpage: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-preferences-fix-
problems#w_solution-1-refresh-firefox
2. Click the Blue Refresh Firefox button
3. Click Refresh Firefox in the window that appears.
4. Click Finish.
