A message from the Churchwarden . . .2017, for Christ Church, was eventful inmany ways and the annual report detailingour outreach will be presented at the AnnualChurch meeting in April of this year. It is therole of Church to serve its community in allmanner of ways and to do this with love andwithout fuss or acclamation. The Churchalso has to conform to legal standards of stateand prove their public benefit as a registeredCharity. For some, including me, this hasproven to be a difficult subject. How doesone seek to report on the achievements, asChristians, without seemingly gratifyingourselves? I believe we do this in a way thatpleases God [1 Peter 3: 7-11] & [2Corinthians 9: 6-15]. There are many aspects of scripture that

instruct our way and there are other ways aswell. In the annual report you will see boxeswith comments inside them. These arecomments made by Mission Societies andindividuals, all with sentiments of gratitudeto Christ Church for their help and support. One such note was pushed under the organ

vestry door over the Christmas period and Iwant to share with you its contents as best Ican . . .

‘Dedicated to the Divine MERCY’ –Christmas 2017 – Heaven’s Song of Joy

There is such joy up in Heaven, as down uponearth they see a tiny baby sleeping – restingthere on Joseph’s knee with his young wife –Mary – sleeping curled up beside him in thehay. There is such joy in Heaven above fortoday is Christmas Day.

There is such fun here in Bethlehem; no onecan believe the news. How those shepherdsabandoned their sleep and the farmers not

amused. The shepherds all claim to have seena vision from Heaven above and the childborn from Heaven above. And the child bornupon this night is the true Son of God.

There is such consternation now – Threestrangers have just arrived claiming to havefollowed a guiding star and Herod is mostannoyed – ‘whatever has been happeninghere; has everyone gone mad? ‘No Royal Kingwould let his son only in swaddling clothes beclad! No Royal King would let his Son in suchpoverty ever be born; No Royal King wouldlet his own son die and be crowned with acrown of thorns.

The note finishes with this praise ‘For all ofyou at Christ Church Worthing. Thank Youfor showing me such love, companionship andcare at a time when I needed it so much. Youhave no idea what that meant to me’.Signed ‘E’

The note has a Wesleyan tone to it but whatit does say is far greater than any declarationof public benefit I have to declare to satisfythe state. On behalf of Simon and myself I want to

thank EVERYONE, just EVERYONE fortheir love and kindness given to all of thosefolk who have visited Christ Church in 2017,for all those folk who use the Church forcommunity led initiatives and finally to us,His Church family, for bringing the Light ofJesus here in the centre of our wonderfultown, our community, our Parish.May God bless us and lead us through

2018, and in His time bring us a Minister tolead us in love and growth. In His Love . . .

Senior moments are . . .When you decide to pull up your socks and realise you’re not wearing any.

When you try to attract the attention of a friend in the street and are

met with looks of terror as you draw nearer and embrace a complete stranger.

When the strained expressions on the faces of your friends and family

tell you they have heard this story before. Many times!

When your dentist seems baffled when you start to undress for your annual check-up.

When your neighbour remarks on how well your Marigolds compliment your evening dress.

When you call your other half by your pet’s name, and vice versa!

When you automatically convert all metric measurements into “old money” in order to workout what it really is.

When the bobble hat that you’re wearing looks remarkably like your tea cosy.

When you find vegetable peelings in your clothes basket and understand why the waste disposal unit is blocked up. Thanks to Dorothy for these gems!

Apologies from the editor! Last month, we published a delicious recipe for these Lemon Pots, but sadly in the process

omitted to include the sugar, so for those of you who tried to make this without any, and wereunderstandably disappointed with the result, here it is in it’s delicious entirety . . .

Giving Thanks . . .Few precious moments lapse each gifted dayThat gratitude deserts my mindfulness;Few opportune occasions fail to sayWhat faltering word and sound cannot express;Felicitations undeserved abound,Though vain presumption seeks their joy to mar,None my appreciation shall confound,Nor leave within my heart unseemly scar;Encouraged by a simple word of thanks,The soul of low esteem shall be affirmed,As dividends provided by all banks,Thus self-belief shall grow the longer termed. The more we freely offer words of praise,The more self-worth of others we shall raise!©Elliott Allison (Sonnet X ‘16)

Carpe Diem!Tomorrow is the same as Yesterday,Save for the ‘How’ in which we live Today,Each minute of the Now,Our choices do allow,Although the unpredictable holds sway!©Elliott Allison ‘16

Meanwhile…“Oh fiddle on! another bus has gone.I wish they’d put the numbers on the back.I like to know what I have missed.” So longAs we can count the cost, the looming lackOf prospects does not irk, but makes a songTo muse the mind along till fun’s on track,Again.Hugh Hellicar August 2006

A rhyme read to Connie Apps by her father, when she was littleJanuary brings the snow; Makes the toes and fingers glow.February brings the rain; Thaws the frozen ponds again.March brings breezes loud and shrill; Stirs the dancing daffodil.April brings the primrose sweet; Scatters daisies at our feet.May brings flocks of pretty lambs; Skipping by their fleecy dams.June brings tulips, lilies, roses; Fills the children’s hands with posies.Hot July brings cooling showers; Strawberries and gilly-flowersAugust brings the sheaves of corn; then the harvest home is borne.Warm September brings the fruit; Sportsmen then begin to shoot.Fresh October brings the pheasant; Then to gather nuts is pleasant.Dull November brings the blast; Then the leaves are falling fast.Chill December brings the sleet; Blazing fire and Christmas treat. With thanks to Connie Apps, written by Elizabeth Falconer.

A message from our organist . . .As many of you will know, I specialise in

early keyboard music from ca.1425 to1835, with a major interest in the repertoiresfrom England, Italy, Spain and Portugal, although I regularly play pieces from southGermany (including Austria), Holland andBelgium as well as Poland, Slovenia andCroatia. Through the liturgical year I try tofind pieces to play before and after the servicewhich are appropriate to the Sunday inquestion, particularly for major festivals, andduring the Communion I usually play piecescomposed for that part of the service, mainlyfrom southern Europe. This month and nextduring Lent I shall be playing pieces of amore reflective mood in a minor key. Every year I write an article, which is

published in British and American Journals,on composers whose anniversary of birth ordeath is commemorated in the year, many ofthem being little-known and their musicrarely heard, and play pieces by them inservices and recitals during the course of theyear. Amongst composers whose

anniversaries fall this year and whose music Ishall be playing are Adriano Banchierib.1568, Casper Hässler d.1618, Abrahamvan den Kerckhoven b.1618, FriedrichMarpurg b.1718, José de Nebra d.1768,Carlos Baguer b.1768, Francisco Cabob.1768 and Fedele Fenaroli d.1818.As well as playing pieces by composers who

were active centuries ago, I am delighted tobe associated with two composers who arevery much alive and writing extensively forthe organ, Carlotta Ferrari from Italy whowas born in 1975, and Carson Cooman fromthe USA who was born in 1982; I am verymuch hoping to include some of their piecesin future services. Finally thank you all verymuch for your kind appreciation of theVoluntary at the end of the service, it is sucha great encouragement to me. If anyonewishes to ask me questions about any of thepieces I have played, please do, don’t be shy!It is a privilege indeed to be able to serve here, may God bless you all abundantly.

Prayer shoud be the key of theday, the lock of the night

An old lady was examined by herdoctor, who told her not to climbany stairs and to come and seehim again in two weeks. When she returned, he

examined her again and told hershe was a little better.“Does that mean I can climb the

stairs again?” she asked.“Yes” the doctor replied“Thank goodness for that”, the

old lady said, “It’s been hellclimbing the drainpipe everynight to go to bed!”

Service on the Seasmore from Chippy

Every so often one’s attention is caught by a few words or lines in a hymn or a psalm – sometimes quite distractingly so. Here’s another!

“All through the storm your love is the anchor, My hope is in you alone.”

Very early in my training and well beforegoing to sea for the first time it was

explained that it wasn’t the anchor that wasthe important component but the anchorchain. What the anchor does is help theheavy chain cable lay out on the seabed andit is the weight of the cable that holds theship in position. When workinganchors and cableson the foc’s’le (thepointy bit at thefront of a ship) wewere often workingwith fast movingextremely heavy bitsof kit and lives wereat risk and dependent on everyone doingtheir job correctly. Despite the scale andapparent agricultural engineering involvedthere were items such as joining shackles thatconnected each of the ten or more shacklesof cable to make up the total length whichneeded extreme care. We needed to slide thefinely machined parts of these joiningshackles together to make a matched set, clean the tapered holes that took the lockingpin and carefully hammer in the lead pelletthat when driven into the shaped recesswould hold the pin in place. Any failure inthis process and we could lose our anchor. But despite the care we took we could notguarantee that all the other links in the chainwere sound – maybe a forging had beendefective and the testing skimped or maybe

the sub-contractor had substituted a cheapcopy (not unknown) and charged full price. How does this relate to me sitting here this

Sunday morning? We often place great faithin what we are given (or told) and it issometimes too easy not to question theevidence. But with a sound basis for our

faith, carefullychoosing a coherentand authoritativesource of teaching, questioning whenwe don’t understandthe significance of astatement andtrusting the greaterdesign we can move

forward and become confident in faith. On a lighter note translation and

interpretation can play a great part in actions.Paddy was driving the capstan heaving in andveering (letting out) a hawser attached to thetowing ship during an exercise, potentially avery dangerous evolution, when I realisedthings were going wrong. Roaring out theorder to “Clear the foc’s’le” to get everyoneto a safe refuge in case the massive ropehawser suddenly snapped and whipped backwith deadly consequences I realised Paddywasn’t responding. Repeating the orderPaddy turned round and shouted “I amveering.” Luckily, in turning round he sawthat he was a lone voice in the wilderness ofthe foc’s’le and dived head first for safety.
