Through her conversations with them, we learn that Adie was always overshadowed in high school by her sister, who was the star in all the plays, and who always got all the boys. Adie’s never even had a boyfriend before. She has come to college with her best friend, DARREN, who she met in high school while doing stage crew. Adie meets TRENT while working backstage with Darren. Trent is a very talented and gorgeous guy, and the lead in the play. After rehearsal, he casually asks Adie out for coffee, and she develops an intense crush on him. During play rehearsal, we see Adie gushing to Darren about her latest date with Trent. As Darren gets the details from her, it becomes clear that Trent is stringing Adie along. When Darren tries to tell her this, she just blows him off. We see Adie continue to go on dates with Trent, and sneak moments with him during rehearsal. However, Trent still doesn’t officially ask her out. Later, we see Darren and Adie having dinner at the food court. The conversation turns to Trent, and Adie implies that things have gotten somewhat physical between them. Darren is upset to learn she isn’t really dating Trent and yet they’ve already started getting serious. He confronts Adie, telling her she deserves better. She gets upset at Darren, claiming he just thinks a guy like Trent would never really want someone like her, and storms out.

Treatment: FromLeftStageWe see ADIE, a college freshman, meeting the other members of the stage crew for the play.

Page 2: Love From Left Stage Final

We next see Adie in Trent’s apartment, waiting for him to meet her. Darren’s comments have clearly affected her, and when Trent shows up, she nervously asks him why they aren’t boyfriend and girlfriend. Trent blows her off, telling her she should know that she’s the only one for him and asking her to let him show her. Adie tries to confirm that they are dating now as Trent tries to get her to sleep with him. When he shrugs off her question yet again, Adie rushes out of the room in tears, finally realizing Darren was right that Trent was just using her. The next week, Adie is too embarrassed to admit to Darren that he was right, so instead she just keeps to herself backstage. Then, during a rehearsal, Trent is bragging that he had sex with Adie to several of his cast mates. Darren overhears and confronts Trent, telling him that he knows Adie would never have slept with him if they weren’t officially dating. Trent just laughs at Darren and turns back to his friends to continue his conversation. Darren taps him on the shoulder, and then punches him square in the nose. Adie, backstage, has seen the whole thing, and runs out to Darren when he punches Trent. She asks him why he did that when she had been so horrible to him, and Darren reminds her that even if they have a fight, she’s still his best friend. She hugs him, and he holds her tight against him. We see Adie and Darren eating together at a restaurant. They are clearly enjoying themselves, but it is not obvious if it is a date. Adie’s hand is on the table, and we see Darren reach over to hold it, and they smile at each other.

SOUNDTRACK:

1. Opening credits: “Slide” by The Goo Goo Dolls “Could you whisper in my ear The things you wanna feel I'll give you anything To feel it comin'”

2. Montage: “Everything” by Michael Buble “And you play it coy but it's kinda cute. Ah, when you smile at me you know exactly what you do. Baby don't pretend that you don't know it's true. 'cause you can see it when I look at you.”

3. When Adie gets angry with Darren in the dining hall: “King of Anything” by Sara Bareilles “Who cares if you disagree You are not me Who made you king of anything So you dare tell me who to be Who died And made you king of anything”

4. When Addie leaves Trent: “No Good” by Kate Voegele “I never feared the unexpected Till I found myself in this peculiar place Unaware of where I was headed Turns out it was your footsteps I had chased”

5. End of last scene/credit roll: “You’re My Best Friend” by Straight No Chaser “Ooh you're the best friend that I ever had I've been with you such a long time You're my sunshine and I want you to know That my feelings are true I really love you Oh you're my best friend Ooo you make me live Ooh I've been wandering round But I still come back to you”

We picked all of these songs because the lyrics associate with how the main character in the scene is feeling. The song that was particularly difficult was the ending credits song. We wanted to leave the ending open ended and up to the audience’s interpretation whether Darren and Adie are together, as to not make it too cliché, and we think this song does it perfectly.
