Lovat's TBM DesignThe custom designed LOVATMPI46SE has the capabilityof operating in either EPB,semi-c1osed or open mode.TheTBM commenced operation in EPB mode, utilizing thescrew conveyor. As ground conditions change, the screwconveyor is interchangeable with the belt conveyor toallow semi-c1osed or open mode operation.To determine what types of soil are ahead of the TBM,

an exploratory probe drill with a portable control table ismounted on a flat car. The probe drill has access to fiveseparate drilling ports which pass through the cuttingheadof the TBM.The LOVAT MP146SE incorporates an ergonomically

designed air-conditioned eperator's cabin on its back up

system. This design permits tunnelling personnel to oper-ate the machine from a safe distance when mining. Theeperator's console houses all of the electronic remotecontrols necessary to operate the TBM functions.The con-sole also includes an industrial workstation which canrecord and display information with full colour graphics.Precast concrete segments are used to line the tunnel

and are transported to the unloader via segment cars.Thesegments are unloaded and fed by the segment monorailto the arm erector. The segment ring design consists offive pieces plus a key.Mounted on bogey-wheeled gantry sections, the back

up system includes the following auxiliary equipment:• Foam Injection System, consisting of three 500litres/min. foam generators, for foam injection into theface of the cuttinghead, mucking ring and along thescrew conveyor casing.

• Polymer Injection System, with a Moyno Pump and 2m3

tank, to supply polymer to the injection ports.• Grout Injection System, with a capacity of 10m3 Ihourat 50 bar. Grout is pumped in from the surface to a 2m3hopper tank, then distributed through grout injectionlines.

• A workshop station, storage area, lunchroom, first aidcloset, and a chemical washroom are also incorporatedon the gantry to accommodate tunnelling personnel.

Tile ProjectThe "Liaison Auteuil - Saint Cloud" plays a vital role in theprogram to clean up the River Seine.lts goal is to allow thetransportation of effluents from the main Parisian sewersand from other departmental collectors. These effluentsare then moved directly toward the Seine-Aval purificationfactory inAchéres or the Seine-Centre purification plant inColombes. This new circuit leads to a better utilization ofthe existing network and reduces the quantity of rain efflu-ents running into the Seine, thereby improving the waterquality at this point of the river.

Starting ShaftLongchamp Shaft is located in the park of "Bois deBoulogne" on the border of the River Seine. The LOVATMP146SE was lowered into the shaft, 31m deep, 9.6m indiameter. A 16m tail tunnel was excavated to permit theTBM train manoeuvres and water pumping equipment wasinstalled to discharge the ground water.The DriveThe completed tunnel will have an inner diameter of 3.0m,an outer diameter of 3.5m and a length of 1.205 km.Thetunnel alignment is a straight drive with a constant upwardslope of +2.1 1%.Crossing I50m under the Seine River, the tunnel then

progresses under buildings and major road intersectionsrequiring maximum control of ground settlement. Theentire alignment lies below the water table and, at the tun-nel invert, the water column varies from a minimum of 6mto a maximum of 30m.At the end of the tunnel excavation,the TBM will arrive at the base of a lOm deep shaft in theSt. Cloud area.The tunnel is excavated entirely in chalk, which appears

in different states of alteration due to the varying materi-als overlying the chalk stratum.The chalk alteration is con-siderable, particularly along the crossing of the river.
