Midwifery Student Practice Portfolio ELA 5 2016
IntroductionBefore you begin you placement you must ensure that you have read through the following resources:
Midwifery Students Practice Portfolio Guidelines Clinical Assessment Tools for the Midwifery Student (CAT) ELA 5 Course Outline ELA 5 Quick Guide
As explained in the Professional Practice Guidelines, the Experiential Learning Activities (ELA) in this program provide opportunity for you to develop your professional and clinical skills. During each ELA you will participate in a pre-clinical workshop in the School’s Horizon Hospital and Health Service (HHHS) and engage with the Clinical Assessment Tool (CAT) for Midwifery Students. Prior to attending placement you will be required to successfully undertake an Objective Structured Clinical Activity (OSCA) in the simulated environment HHHS and pass the Medicine Calculations online assessment, as identified in your Course Outline to satisfy the requirements for clinical placement. Any student who receives a fail grade for an OSCA will not be eligible to proceed to the clinical placement of the course. If you do not pass the OSCA on the first attempt you will be given a further opportunity to be reassessed, this will be arranged through your Course Coordinator.
ELA 5 consists of 1 pre-clinical day, 4 weeks x 5 days/week, rostered across a 7 day roster (this may include early, late and night shifts), and a post-clinical workshop. Please refer to the Course Outline to review the course objectives for ELA 5 and the assessment requirements.
*Please note you need to ensure you have met orientation requirements for each venue; please review orientation details under Clinical Experiences on your Learnonline site
Compiling the Portfolio This portfolio is to be taken with you on placement and while attending your COCE. It is important to show your portfolio to your Clinical Facilitator and the midwives you work with. Your portfolio should include the following documents:
Learning Plan
Record of Clinical Attendance
Clinical Assessment Tool for the Midwifery Student (CAT)
o Learning Tools (specified in the Course Outline)
o Competency Assessment for each area
Midwifery Student Venue Feedback x 2 (minimum)
Clinical Experience Records ( including COCE documentation) with reflections and updated Cumulative record of minimum experiences
Critical Reflection
All documentation must be clear, informative and in a report-like style.
No identification in any way may be made of women, babies or their families. Pseudonyms should be used to de-identify women and their families. Students are responsible for compiling and maintaining their portfolio. It is your responsibility to keep it safe and to ensure it is available for review by ANMAC if required for auditing purposes.
Assessment of your portfolio
All records for this ELA should be compiled in a folder along with the clinical experiences (including COCE) that you have documented during this ELA and since your previous ELA completion. Please ensure you update the cumulative record for each experience and the ongoing cumulative record of minimum experiences for your program. This record should be included at the beginning of your folder to be signed off by your Course Coordinator. Please submit original paperwork.
Portfolios will be marked through an interview process. You will be required to attend an appointment with the Course Coordinator or assigned marker to review your portfolio.
Internal students will undertake this interview face-to-face and bring their completed portfolio with them. Interview times will be scheduled through the learnonline site.
External students may opt to undertake a virtual interview; however the portfolio will need to be submitted prior to the organised interview time. Your Course Coordinator will schedule an interview time through the learnonline site.
If a student’s portfolio does not meet the required standard it will be returned and a further appointment scheduled to review and ascertain the grade. Any student that does not return the amended portfolio in the agreed timeframe will receive a fail grade.
Once this ELA has been marked, you must keep all documentation in a larger portfolio for evidence of meeting the clinical requirements for the program.
Passport to Placement
Please ensure that you take your Passport to Placement folder to placement should the venue ask to see evidence of the required documentation.
DSCI Criminal History CheckYour DCSI certificate must be available as this may be check at the venue you attend.
Nursing and Midwifery Student Clinical Placement Orientation, SA HealthNursing and Midwifery Student Clinical Placement Orientation 2014, Nursing Office Department of Health, South Australia, this is applicable for SA Public Health venues, http://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/wps/wcm/connect/ffbb7a8044f901d5b31df3005ba75f87/Nursing+and+Midwifery+Student+Clinical+Placement+Orientation+Package+V2.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&CACHEID=ffbb7a8044f901d5b31df3005ba75f87
Please make sure you have worked through the online package and have completed the check list and signed this form. Keep a copy of the signed checklist in your portfolio as some venues will request to site this. They may also request to site a record of your vaccinations so please have these available as well
First Aid and CPR certificateThese are a requirement for placement and it is advisable that you keep a record of these in your passport to placement.
Manual handlingYou must compete a manual handling session before commencing placement. This can be undertaken online by accessing the flowing link from the HHHS tab on your Learnonline site https://lo.unisa.edu.au/course/view.php?id=2229
Learning PlanPlease review your reflections from previous ELA placements to assist you develop your Learning Plan. You will need to develop this learning plan as outlined in your Course site. This is to be discussed with your Clinical Facilitator at the beginning of placement and should guide your placement experience. You can share this with any midwives or doctors you work with in order to help them understand your learning needs for this placement. At the end of your placement you will need to demonstrate how you have achieved your learning plan and submit it with your portfolio. An electronic copy of the learning plan template can be found on the course site.
Medicine Calculations CertificateYou must undertake the learning package online and gain 100% for your ELA 5 Medicine Calculations assessment. Please upload the certificate on the Learnonline site and present a hard copy at your preclinical.Attendance RecordYou will be required to keep an attendance record that will need to be signed each day of your placement by the midwife you work with or the Clinical Facilitator. Please note if you cannot attend placement for any reason you must notify the manager of the area you are working in as well as contact your Clinical Facilitator. This can be done by email so it is a good idea to ask for the contact phone and email for your Clinical Facilitator and also for the area manager. You will need to make up all missed shifts, you may be able to make up 1 or 2 days while on placement but this is not always possible, please communicate with your Clinical Facilitator. If you are going to be late or leave early due to COCE appointments you also need to communicate, however this should be an exception as being punctual is a professional responsibility. Communication is a key skill in midwifery practice and it is important that you communicate your absence to ensure that you facilitate a positive work environment.
*If your Clinical Facilitator is unable to arrange the required makeup shift/s you must contact your Course Coordinator and the Clinical Placement Unit to see if this can be arranged at an alternative time. Failing to complete the required shifts may result in a fail grade and you would need to complete the placement when the ELA is offered again.
Clinical Assessment Tool for the Midwifery StudentLearning Tools
While on clinical placement or through the Continuity of Care Experience (COCE), the CAT for Midwifery Students will be utilised to inform the clinical assessment component. You will be expected to complete each of the clinical skills learning tool assessments detailed in the CAT for Midwifery Students as outline below:
Learning tool number 22: Enteral/tube feeding the baby Learning tool number 23: Care of the unwell baby receiving oxygen therapy Learning tool number 24: Care of the baby receiving phototherapy Learning tool number 26: Neonatal resuscitation via simulation
* Learning tool 26 will be undertaken as the OSCA and this can be signed off at this point. Tools can be downloaded from the learnonline site.
*It is expected that students will attain a minimum rating of Proficient (P) for all tools
Any student who does not achieve the minimum rating for the specified skill will require ongoing support and reassessment. This will be undertaken in consultation with the student, Clinical Facilitator and academic staff at the University responsible for the course.
All CAT tools must be completed within third year of your program at a minimum of a proficient level. We recommend that you complete more than the recommended tools for ELA 5 during this placement. You will need to work with your Clinical Facilitator to achieve this as there will be very limited opportunity to assist any student except for very exceptional circumstances.
Competency Assessment
You will also be required to engage in 2 Competency Assessments, these assessments are usually undertaken at 2 weeks intervals. The Clinical Facilitator assigned to you for the associated ELA will be responsible for undertaking this assessment.
*It is expected that students will attain a minimum rating of Proficient (P) for the Competency Assessment for ELA 5
Students who do not achieve a pass grade in the first assessment will be required to undertake a clinical challenge either while on placement or in the HHHS with the Clinical Midwife. Upon successful completion of the clinical challenge, students will be able to continue the clinical placement and undertake a final summative assessment. Students who do not achieve a pass grade for the final summative assessment will not pass the ELA course. This may impact on their progression throughout the program.
The method of assessment chosen for both the learning tools and the competency assessment component is a modified Bondy scale. You will need to be familiar with the scales used to rate your practice and you may need to provide the midwife or facilitator with a copy of these prior to completing your learning tool.
Independent (I): Refers to being safe & knowledgeable; proficient & coordinated and appropriately confident and timely. Does not require supporting cues
Proficient (P):Refers to being safe & knowledgeable; efficient & coordinated; displays someconfidence and undertakes activities within a reasonably timely manner. Requires occasional supporting cues.
Assisted (A):
Refers to being safe and knowledgeable most of the time; skillful in parts however is inefficient with some skill areas; takes longer than would be expected to complete the task. Requires frequent verbal and some physical cues
Supported (S):Refers to being safe when closely supervised and supported; unskilled and inefficient; uses excess energy and takes a prolonged time period. Continuous
Dependent (D):Refers to concerns about being unsafe and being unable to demonstratebehaviour or articulate intention; lacking in confidence, coordination and efficiency. Continuous verbal and physical cues/interventions

Venue FeedbackYou are required to collect feedback from the midwives that directly supervise you while on clinical placement. This feedback is important and can be used to support your application in 3 rd year when applying for a graduate position. You must obtain at least 2 completed feedback forms for each area you are placed in although we encourage you to collect more if appropriate.
Critical ReflectionYour critical reflection should be submitted with your portfolio as a hard copy. Please refer to the Course Outline as each ELA has a different reflection activity.
