Two of Kentuckiana's favorite blues musicians will return to our area during the month of June. Stacy Mitchhart (top right) will be the headliner for this year’s second annual Smokin' on the River festival in Jeffersonville, IN. The festival takes place Friday and Saturday, June 18 and 19 at the Riverstage. Mitchhart closes out the festival on Saturday. See the schedule in this issue of Blues News for full details. The above photo was taken at last year’s Garvin Gate blues festival. Josh Garrett (top left) of Houma, LA will headline the first MERF/KBS Booty Shakin' Blues Festival to be held on Saturday, June 26 at the Riverfront Amphitheater in New Albany, IN. The festival is a benefit for both the Musicians Emergency Resource Foundation and the Kentuckiana Blues Society. The photo of Garrett was taken at the KBS 21st Anniversary Party last November at the Vernon Club. A full schedule for the MERF/KBS festival can be found inside this newsletter. Both festivals are free and open to the public.

3 BLUES NEWS June 2010
A new radio station made its debut in Louisville last month. Crescent Hill Radio (CHR), AM1650, is now on the air. The station was created by local musician Kathy Weisbach and is a community radio station with no commercials featuring local and regional music. CHR is an unlicensed but legal station and is allowed by FCC regulations. The station has a low watt transmitter and a broadcast range of about one mile from the studio at 2518 Frankfort Ave. However it is also streamed live on the Internet at chradio.net. Kathy is interested in playing all types of music on the station. If you know of any local or regional musician who would like to be heard on CHR she can be reached at [email protected]. Kathy has graciously allowed me to create a blues show that airs Friday nights from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The Kentuckiana Blues Radio Show will feature blues from Louisville and the surrounding area. My first broadcast was Friday, May 7. I want to thank all the musicians who have granted me permission to play their music on the station. If you would like to send me your music for the program please mail it to: Kentuckiana Blues Radio Show, PO Box 755, Louisville, KY 40201. You can also contact me at [email protected]. All music received will be evaluated for content (no foul or obscene language allowed) and entered into the station's data-base and played automatically on a rotating basis.
It's time to gear up for the local festival season. Three blues festivals will be in our area in the month of June. The largest in the state of Kentucky is the W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival in Henderson, KY from June 12 to June 19. It doesn't get any bigger than this one with a weeks worth of blues and more than a dozen national blues acts including Joe Louis Walker, Shemekia Copeland, Tab Benoit, Kenny Neal, Magic Slim, Shirley Johnson and Chubby Carrier just to name a few. It's a free festival and the complete schedule is available at handyblues.org. For those of you sticking around town the weekend of June 18 and 19, the second annual Smokin' on the River festival will take place at the Riverstage in Jeffersonville, IN. Four local blues acts with Stacy Mitchhart as the headliner will take the stage during this Indiana state barbecue competition. The following week the Musicians Emergency Resource Foundation (MERF) and the KBS will host a benefit festival at the Riverfront Amphitheater in New Albany, IN on Saturday, June 26. See the ads in this issue of Blues News for more information on both festivals.
The Russellville, KY blues society has announced their dates for the Mary Ann Fisher Summer Concert Series. On Saturday, June 5 the first show will feature L.C. Ulmer, Mississippi Millie and Tiger Gagen. Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band will be there on Friday, July 16. The Michael Gough Group of Bowling Green, KY will play on Friday, August 6. The Second Annual Gospel Festival is the last show in the series on Saturday, September 4. All shows are held at the West Kentucky African American Heritage Center at Sixth and Morgan streets. Russellville, KY is located about 30 miles southwest of Bowling Green, KY. Details are available on-line at russellvilleblues.com.
The deadline for this years KBS band competition is quickly approaching. All applications must be received by Friday, June 11. Forms are available on-line at kbsblues.org. You can contact me at [email protected] or 502/724-9971 if you have any questions.
Two local shows of note. The Vernon Club at 1575 Story Ave will host a Tim Krekel memorial concert on Friday, June 25. The lineup has yet to be announced but the proceeds will benefit MERF. The main man himself, Riley “Beale Street Blues Boy” King better known as B.B. King, will be at the Horseshoe Casino in Elizabeth, IN on Sunday, July 4. Time has started to catch up to the blues leg-end. After all he is 84 years old but I can think of no better way to celebrate our country's birthday than to see this national treasure in concert.

New Music Reviews!
Mississippi Heat Let’s Live It Up Delmark DE-807
Now for something completely different from my last review, Back to the Future from the 50’s. Mississippi Heat a modern Chicago Blues band has just released a new cd “ Let‘s Live It Up“ with 13 originals and one cover of Sugar Pie DeSanto's catchy Veltone/Chess classic "I Want to Know!". Inetta Visor, a very talented woman who sings the title track “Let’s Live it up” reminds you of a cross of Koko Taylor and Shemekia Copeland. Next we have John Primer singing on “Steadfast Loyal and True”, “Betty Sue” and “I Got Some News Today”. He has a Charlie Musselwhite vocal tone. He also plays lead guitar solos on the those first two songs John toured with Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim and The Teardrops before starting his own band in 1995.
Harp player Pierre Lacocque, (who wrote most of the songs on this compilation), was born in Israel and lived in Germany, France and Belgium. Moving to Chicago when a teenager, his biggest influence was Big Walter Horton. Pierre’s harp playing all through this CD is fresh and exciting never boring or lacking in intensity.
I really enjoyed listening to this CD. The only thing I find unsettling is the over use of the Electronic Vocal Harmonizer on the track “Jumpin' In Chi-Town“. Pick it up and give it a listen; I’m sure you will like it with its great cast of musicians. Along with Pierre Lacocque, Inetta Visor, and John “The Real Deal“ Primer we have :
Carl Weathersby: guitar (1,3,4,6-10.12), guitar solos (4,6,8,9) Giles Corey: rhythm guitar, solos (1,3,5,7,10-12,14) Chris "Hambone" Cameron: organ, piano, clavinet Stephen Howard: bass Kenny Smith: drums (2,3,5-7,9,10,12,14) Andrew "Blaze" Thomas: drums (1,4,8,11,13) Ruben Alvarez: percussion (3,7, 9) Rhonda Preston: vocals (11) The Chicago Horns: (3,6,9,12)
Jim “Fuzzy” Roth
1. Let’s Live It Up! (3:50) 2. Steadfast, Loyal, and True (4:48) 3. Jumpin' In Chi-Town (3:17) 4. She Died From A Broken Heart (6:03) (Inetta Visor I Chris Cameron) 5. Betty Sue (4:40) 6. Another Sleepless Night (4:17) 7. Peace Train (3:23) 8. Been Good To You (5:23) 9. I Want To Know (3:52) (Sugar Pie DeSanto I Bob Geddins I Badger) 10. Enlighten Me (4:44) 11. Daggers & Spears (4:54) 12. Don't Cry For Me (3:35) 13. I Got Some News Today (4:25) (John Primer) 14. Until We Meet Again (2:23)
Dandeliers (And Other Great Groups on States) Chop Chop Boom Delmark DE-703
Get out your Bass moccasins, white shirt, skinny black tie. Primp you Pompadour and Butch up your Ducktail and get ready to go Strolling at the High School Sock Hop. After listening to this new CD of the old music era 1953-‘57 of the Dandeliers & Other Great Groups on States Records ‘CHOP CHOP BOOM‘, I was ready to go to The Middletown Hop and then Cruise Jerry’s and Frisch’s.
Those days are long gone but you can relive them with the music of this great CD. These groups didn’t make it big as the more notable groups of that era but they represent the sound that WAS, Doo Wop, Harmony Street Corner Singing of the day. Local talent, stars in their hometown area but not lucky enough to break into the big times. Though all of these songs
are obscure they sound so familiar.
“My Autumn Love” and “My Love” by the Dandeliers could have easily been sound tracks to the Movies representing the 50’s and early 60’s. “Ridin’ and Rockin’ ” by the Hornets with the great sax ride takes you back to a simpler time of the juke box at the Malt shop. “In Your Dreams” by the The Strollers , “Mellow Daddy” by the Drakes (with it’s first take foul up and second take a wrap), “I Knew I Had a Chance” by The Palms , The Five Chances’ “Bashful Boy “ and “Gloria” (NOT the one you know!) will leave you “Lost In the Fifties Again”. Enjoy your trip in the “Way Back Machine” as you listen to this CD and all the great groups. Now excuse me while I look for my old jar of “Butch Hair Wax” (and my hair).

Dr. Feelgood Potts Goin’ Down To Memphis Pottstown Records
This band was an unknown since I had only heard them for the first time in a bar in Memphis and then only for 3 or 4 songs before I bought it. I liked the music style and the songs that I heard, so I bought the CD and had the doctor sign it.
More times than I care to remember, I buy a CD from a band and it is nothing like the
live music and I am disappointed with my purchase. As good as this band was live, I would have to say the CD is just as good. There are 10 songs on the CD, all written by Potts. Three of the songs are harmonica instrumentals and any fan of the harmonica is bound to like these. The other songs also feature harmonica, but on these three, he really stands out. On “Pistol Packing Mama” his harp work will make you think you are listening to Little Walter. The song “Greenwood Mississippi Town” is a sort of autobiography and is everything the doctor told me when I spoke with him.
Potts can play the rollicking energetic harp or the slow “draggin’ your feet” blues. The other instruments in the band are good too, but honestly I did not notice them the first several times I played the CD.
You can find this CD in Memphis or on CD Baby, and I highly recom-mend it to the harp lovers among us.

Juke Joint Allstars Live Blues Show Volume 2 BandStand Entertainment
I purchased this CD from the band while in Memphis recently. They have two CD’s out and I picked the one that I thought would be the closest to what I heard that night, which I liked. It turns out that the music does not resemble what I heard that night. The live band played blues with a rock bent, with harp
and fiery guitar. The CD is actually pretty good music for the most part. However, the CD falls apart after the first 3 songs. Not only does the music change, but the engineer must have changed because the volume drops down dramatically and the mixing seems to be different.
The vocals also drop off to the point that you wished he was playing the harp. The production of the CD was apparently done in a band member’s basement as the liner is paper cut in a crooked line, with a paucity of notes (the name of the songs and the booking agent’s contact phone number).
It is a shame that this band could not have been recorded in a more pro-fessional manner, but it is probably a statement about blues bands these days, who if they record at all, have to do it on a shoestring budget.
In summary, this is a good band, but don’t bother with the CD.
Bob Brown
Rick Holmstrom Late In The Night David Gerald Enterprises
Rick Holmstrom produced and recorded this CD in Los Angeles. He wrote all twelve songs and added his wonderful rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” . Jimmie Vaughan says “Keep your eye on Rick. He can play!” And he plays a
mean guitar and does the vocals, joined by band members Stephen Hodges and Jeff Turmes. A lot of just music chords on this CD and I like “Better Way”. My favorite was the title song, just called “In The Night”. Music clips at www.myspace.com/rickholmstrom. Check out this good guitarist.
Carolyn Joyce
I recently had the opportunity to spend 2 hours (yes only 2 hours) on Beale Street in Memphis. Since I had never been there, I real-ized that 2 hours was better than nothing and I had to see for my-self what it is all about. I started at 9:00 PM on the corner where B.B. Kings is located-the sign drew me there. I found at the door that there was a cover charge, which was no big deal, but I could hear the band inside and they sounded like Blood Sweat and Tears, so I moved on to find a place with better music or no cover.
The street was closed off by the police a’ la’ Bourbon Street in New Orleans and had quite a crowd being that it was the middle of the week, and most joints had a pretty good crowd inside too. After passing a few more bars, the sound of a harp beckoned me in a door near the corner. Better still, this place had no cover charge (don’t think that I am cheap, but if I have to pay to go in the door, my expectations are higher). The band’s name was the “Dr Feelgood Potts Band”. The music was very good blues so I pulled up a barstool, ordered a drink and found out how they could afford to not charge a cover.
After a few songs, the band went on break and I got to talk to the Doctor. He hails from Mississippi and moved to Memphis, but brought the Mississippi blues with him. He is backed by bass, drums and guitar, and is the house band (unfortunately I did not write down the name of the bar- another trip may be in order). I bought the CD ($20) that he was hawking called “Going Down to Memphis”, and had him sign it. While still on break, he started talking to some friends of his so I went a couple of doors down and caught another band (no cover of course).
The band in the second bar was named “The Juke Joint All Stars”. When I walked in, the guitarist was mesmerizing the crowd with his hot licks. After slowing down to warp factor 1, the harp kicked in and that guy was really good too. While this band was bluesy too, it was more of a Stevie Ray Vaughn style of music. I bought their CD also ($20). There were two to choose from-one with the whole band and one with only a few of them. I bought the one with the harpist on it which was titled “Live Blues Show Volume 2”.
By this time I was slowly running out of time and quickly running out of money, so I went back to hear the doctor. I stayed there until I had to leave to go back to the hotel and only had money for the trolley and change in my pocket. A beggar hit me up while waiting for the trolley and I figured what the hell am I going to do with this change in my pocket, so I contributed to the economic recovery of Memphis.
When I go again, it will be a weekend night or two, and I will plan on spending more time sampling the different bars and music. My two hours were well worth the effort.

Spinnin’ in the Drawer Where country meets blues Meets rock meets gospel Buy me a ticket, show me to a seat, stick a guitar in my hands. I’ll be awhile. Vault Point Knob, at the top of Beeler Hill. Where they buried people standing up, screwed into the ground. Literally. Louisville has been a well known hot spot for song writers, singers and good bands for many years and THE KING, Marvin Maxwell, (not Jerry Lawler), has had his drumming paws and life involved in many of the different scenes that occurred across that spectrum. We were having a smoke outside SRBB last fall, waiting for The King to join the KingBees on stage, and the conversation drifted back to Lonnie Mack. Mack recorded a bunch of 45’s for the Cincy Fra-ternity Label in Louisville and The King and Wayne Young and Frank Bugbee were among his back up group – and The King said unto me “A lot of the best songs (of the 60’s era) got throwed in the drawer and never were recorded be-cause people were scared that someone would steal them if they played them. Write that in your column.” So I did. Cash Box Kings I-94 Blues Blue Bella 1016 I reviewed this last month. My opinion has not changed: If you would like to hear 1950’s, ‘60’s Chicago Blues played to-day like it was then – this is your CD. It is their 4th, I have not yet had the privilege of hearing the first three. Watermelon Slim Up Close & Personal Southern Wick Music SRG – 1003 www.watermelonslim.com We saw Watermelon Slim for the first time, and in a concert setting, at the Madison Ribberfest last August. Then we were lucky enough to see him at SRBB this spring. What a showman! Is it blues? Yes. Is it country? Yes. Old country. No compensators on this voice. Well, what is it? A collection of songs that tell human stories with musical accompani-ment. Is it blues, is it country. Yes. But not only. Supposed to be him alone with a guitar. Some is, some ain’t. Sometimes somebody else gets loose and adds some noises too. It’s in my car and beside my house drawer. I like it. Jimmy Rogers With Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters Bullseye Blues Recorded live at the Breminale Festival, Bremen, Germany, June 7, 1991 Okie Dokey Stomp, Blues in D-natural (this is worth the price of the CD by itself), Same Old Blues, Rock This House, Gold Tailed Bird, Why Did You Do It?, Can’t Sleep For Worrying, Walking By Myself, Left Me With A Broken Heart, Got My Mojo Working, Shake Your Money Maker, You’re Sweet. The title and song list are descriptions enough if you are familiar with these people already. If you are not familiar with these people – please find this CD and listen to it – you need something to compare others with. The winner of the Christmas Contest “Name the song, group, and guitar player” was Kristopher Pickhardt of Indiana, who correctly said: Electric Flag , A Long Time Coming, Easy Rider, Mike Bloomfield” Although no one he was talking to had any idea why he said it
