Louis Poulsen has always had a unique approach to lighting. We do not

make light bulbs. We interpret their good and bad characteristics in a

way that ensures our fixtures fulfil our strict requirements for:

Good lighting for people.

Our lighting philosophy is integrated into all our products. Important

parameters such as no glare, good colour rendering and comfortable

ambience are therefore elements in our final fixture designs.

We care about people’s well-being, and want them to feel comforta-

ble working or relaxing in the light from our fixtures. We have an atti-

tude towards light – an attitude which aims to give you an experience

of comfort and ambience.

A holistic attitude to light

- and a true rendering of reality

The LED light source is still being developed, but its qualities are already come so

good that it provides a worthy alternative to many conventional light sources.

Louis Poulsen supplies LED light sources in two colour temperatures – 3000K and

4000K. Blue light makes light seem more pure and clear. Reducing the quantity

of blue light results in a warmer tone. An incandescent lamp has a colour tem-

perature of about 2600K.

LED light sources are also ideal for dimming. They can be dimmed smoothly

while maintaining their colour temperature.

LED light sources are also excellent at rendering the colours of nature. This is

clear from the continuous spectral curves, showing smooth transitions between

red, yellow, green and blue.

Beat LED is an update of Louis Poulsens downlight series which is

available in a wealth of variants and light sources. It is a versatile

lighting workhorse, which the LED version extends into an energy ef-

ficient solution suited to a wide range of lighting applications.

With its wide range of accessories, Beat’s identity helps highlight the

image and uniqueness of an architectural context. The light distribu-

tion or decor components attach to the fixture via a simple magnet-

ic system – requiring no tools.

a lighting workhorse that blends into any setting

Page 8: Louis Poulsen - Downlights

8

Beat is easy to install in ceilings. Simply pull down the three spring clamps and tighten

them against the ceiling panel, and the narrow ring ensures a close and stable fit against

the ceiling.

Beat is available with an external driver, making for easier installation, as this can be

installed where there is limited space above the ceiling.

The efficient heat sink on top of the fixture conducts heat away from the light source,

ensuring good efficiency and extending its lifetime.

Extremely long lifetimes are reported for

LED light sources. However, to maximise the

lifetime of an LED it is important to maintain

an appropriate operating temperature

around the light source. LEDs emit heat. The

better this heat is conducted away from the

light source, the better it will perform and

the more its lifetime will be extended.

LEDs are not just a light source

It is therefore not just a matter of inserting

an LED light source. The fixture must be de-

signed to ensure the lowest possible operat-

ing temperature around the light source.

One of the methods used to achieve this is to

conduct heat to a heat sink.

Long-term goals

Louis Poulsen optimises all its products to

the light sources they employ. Implement-

ing LED light sources demands extensive de-

sign changes to existing fixtures and great

accuracy in the design of new fixtures.

The great care we take with our products is

one of the hallmarks of Louis Poulsen, and

all our LED development therefore looks to

the future – not just tomorrow.

Beat is available with a wide range of accessories. If it is only to

serve as a downlight, the narrow white edge makes the Beat fixture

a stylistic and simple way to create lighting in harmony with the

style and architecture of the setting.

Beat has been developed to blend in equally with coffered ceilings,

or large flat ceiling surfaces. A discreet white ring on the ceiling sur-

face is the only visible feature.

The highly positioned light source significantly reduces ’passing by

glare’ and the matt reflector controls the luminance, ensuring a soft

diffuse light which is perceived as comfortable, whatever its colour

temperature.

Ultra-minimalism increases versatility

Strata LED is an updated version of Alfred Homann’s successful Strata

concept. Strata was designed in 1979 in connection with a major reno-

vation project in Nyhavn, Copenhagen.

The project required an integrated ceiling fixture for rooms with low

ceilings. Alfred Homann conceived a brilliant detail for this fixture. He

made the top surface of the rings concave, so that some of the primar-

ily downward directed light could be reflected back on to the ceiling.

This forms a decorative circle of light on the ceiling around the fixture

which had two effects: 1. It created the optical illusion that the ceiling

was higher than it was. 2. It smoothed out the differences in lumi-

nance between the fixtures and created attractive lighting on the ceil-

ing surface.

A brilliant idea re-expressed

Page 18: Louis Poulsen - Downlights

18

The ceiling becomes part of the room

Alfred Homann’s Strata fixture enabled him to in-

tegrate the ceiling as a visual element of the

three-dimensional perception of the space. Arne

Jacobsen had the same effect in mind when he

created the Munkegaard design classic.

The LED light source creates a different kind of light

Whenever Louis Poulsen updates a technical design, great care is taken not

to change the lighting intent of the original product. However updating the

light source not only involves employing a new light source, but also incor-

porating more stringent modern requirements, for example in relation to

energy consumption.

Light from LED light sources is perceived as clearer and more defined,

changing the perception of Strata in many ways. The delineations are more

stringent and the fixture appears brighter, primarily because the LED light

source has a continuous spectrum distribution, emitting more light in the

cool spectrum than a compact fluorescent lamp.

A different visual impression of the ceiling surface is created and the inte-

gration between the ceiling and fixture becomes more uniform.

Light features: The light distribution is diffuse and symmetrical. The white reflector ensures a soft pleasant light. The rings reduce the angle of glare and uncomfortable passing-by glare. The concave top surfaces of the rings reflect some light towards the ceiling, providing the illusion of higher ceiling height.

Zirkon was originally developed specifically for

Grundfos´ head office by architects C.F. Møller. Zirkon

is designed for use as a general ceiling fixture for

corridors, etc.

Zirkon has a precise, monolithic diffuser. The fixture

is characterised by its attractive bright disc, which

conceals any hint of the light source outline.

A polycarbonate disc beneath a downlight. It could hardly be more

simple, but focus on the details makes Zirkon something special.

The suspended polycarbonate disc appears to float as it elegantly illu-

minates the ceiling surface. The disc achieves its characteristic look

through the space which arises between the bright centre, ringed by

two different illuminated outer zones, and framed by the frosted, dif-

fuse, shining edge.

The fixture’s extremely simple design harmoniously matches other

fixtures such as Doo-Wop.

Superlative minimalism- harmonic presence

Page 28: Louis Poulsen - Downlights

28

Zirkon is available in three different sizes. This makes it easier to differentiate each

room’s design expression. Large surface areas in a room seem more peaceful with

a fixture of large diameter, and narrow corridors seem wider with a fixture of

small diameter. Interesting ceiling environments can also be created using the var-

ious alternatives. Let the sizes help make a difference to the room environment.

The balance is in the dimensions
