funds to assist me in the purchase of necessary

materials for my academics such as school

supplies, textbooks, and materials that are

needed for my classes. The funds will help

Laureen Riddick

I'm a first generation college student. When I graduated from

American River College I was the only one of my mother's

children to earn a high school diploma and then continue on

to higher education and earn an Associates of Arts in Liberal

Studies. The Noyce Scholarship will continue to aid me with

guidance and direction in my teaching venture. The Noyce

scholarship has afforded me the ability to continue to believe

in myself. I am able to dedicate my time and energy to being

a successful graduating biological sciences senior. The

scholarship has supplemented my income and drastically

reduced my work hours. Now my goal I'm currently striving for

is to graduate with honors so that I can show my future

students where science can take them. This journey of mine

has been a struggle but is worth every success and trail I

have experienced along the path.

Navigating academia has been a challenge and through my

mistakes I have learned a great deal. I was told in high school

that science was not for me by teachers and when I

attempted to take biology was removed from the class by my

counselor. This scholarship a platform for me to go back to

high school and make a positive impact in a students life and

encourage students that they can be successful in biology. It

has taken me years to work on my confidence in science and

to believe in myself wholeheartedly to go after a degree in

biological sciences. I have realized that I have to forge my
