Tonight’s Topics
Topics• Loudoun’s Stormwater Goals
• Requirements from Virginia DEQ
• Existing Stormwater Management Facilities
• Other Methods of Pollution Reduction
• Example Projects
• Partnering with HOAs
• Loudoun County Stormwater Contact Information
3
Goals
• Largest stormwater goal for Loudoun County is to reduce pollutants in Stormwater Discharges
• Pollutant reduction efforts improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay and locally impaired streams
• Pollutants of concern include: Nitrogen Phosphorus Sediment Bacteria
4
Requirements from Virginia DEQ
• Chesapeake Bay Pollution Reduction Goals Required by the Virginia DEQ 5% Reduction by 2018 40% Reduction by 2023 100% Reduction by 2028
5
Existing Stormwater Management Facilities
• Existing Stormwater Management Facilities can be modified to make them more efficient Conversion of Dry Ponds to other Best Management Practices such as
Constructed Wetlands. Installation of Forebays in Wet & Dry Ponds Modifying Existing Swales with Underdrains
6
Other Methods of Pollution Reduction
• Installation of New Stormwater Management Facilities (bioretention, dry swale, constructed wetland, permeable pavement, etc.)
• Developing and following a Nutrient Management Plan (Fertilization Plan)
• Tree Planting (aka Land Use Conversion)
7
Other Methods of Pollution Reduction
• Restoring Streams Mitigates erosion within the stream channel Promotes a healthy watershed

Example Projects
• Tree Plantings at Sugarland Run, Broadlands, and Red Cedar HOAs– Helped Plant 968 Trees in 2015– Converted 3.26 acres of turf to natural area
9
Example Projects
• Installation of New Stormwater Management Facilities Gwen Thompson Briar Patch Park Constructed Wetlands
Treats roughly 89 acres of previously treated stormwater runoff Removes Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Sediment from Stormwater that
would enter an impaired waterway Adds environmental education elements to an existing park site

Nutrient Management Plans
• Nutrient Management Plans are being developed for all County Park sites with more than 1 acre of playing fields
• Plans include information on placement, timing, and application (amounts and type) of fertilizers
• Plans are designed to reduce the loss of excess nutrients to the environment
• Helps to mitigate algae blooms and “dead zones” in local waterways

Partnering With HOAs
• DGS hopes to partner with local HOAs to: Find potential projects Determine pollutants removed and estimate overall project cost Contribute monies towards these projects Ensure improvements will be maintained over the life of the facility Raise public awareness about stormwater related issues
