Her songs are spun from beautiful lyrics and sophisticated music-writ-ing. No surprise then that her music plus her unique dress sense of head-scar f -cum-f lamboyant -co loured clothing has made her a hit with her

young fans.

The independent singer-songwriter will leave next year to tour Los An-geles and New York and promote her album. In an interview with The Nut Graph on 14 Oct 2010 at her shop IamJetfuel, Yuna tells us there is no incompatibility between tradi-tion and culture on one hand and modern, progressive thinking on the

other.

That might sound like a nice side job, but the truth is I don’t get hired very frequently. And it’s extremely diffi-cult to find consistent work. I don’t even try to line up gigs; I’m usu-ally satisfied playing for myself and whoever else happens to be in the room. Add to that the bachelor’s degree in music that I’ll be paying off for years to come, and my music “career” can easily be viewed as nothing more than a really expen-

sive hobby.

Music is a drug, according to the subject of Vox’s cover story this week, Lonnie Barker Jr. To that, I can attest. It affects you financially — when I was a sophomore in college, I spent a chunk of my savings ac-count on a new keyboard. It affects your social life. On many occasions, I have chosen to stay in and jam rather than go out simply because

I was on a roll.

ACOUSTIC GUITARAN OVERVIEW OF POPULAR GUITAR TYPES

There are several types of acoustic guitars. The most common are the Dreadnought (6 string and 12 string), Classical and Parlor guitars. Each guitar type is designed to accommodate different musical styles

Dreadnought Style Acoustic Guitar

While the dread-nought appears

in many variations. This is the guitar that comes to mind whe guitar that comes to mind when most people think “guitar”. Sometimes called a western guitar the Dreadnought is a big instrument with a full

sound and a lot of bass. Ideally dread-noughts are loud guitars designed to accompany singers or fit into a wide range of musical idioms. For the average player this is the right guitar.

Cutaway Dreadnought

Another style of dreadnother style

of dreadnaught guitar has a cutaway to allow access to the highest register. The cutaway’s effect on the guitar’s sound is a subject for de-bate but, the reality is that if you want

to play those frets, you have to be able to reach them. The assumption is that there is a loss of bass response due to the decrease in internal volume. Again a well made guitar will sound great anyway.

12 String Dreadnought

The 12 string guitar is similar in

construction and styling to the six string guitar. Although it has 12 strings rather than the usual six, the strings work in pairs tuned to the same notes the first two pairs are tuned to exactly the same pitch while rest are tuned to the same notes one

octave apart. This means that although the 12 string has a fuller, richer timbre, the notes and chord shapes are the same as the standard six string. The additional string tension makes this guitar somewhat less than ideal for beginners. It’s a great strumming guitar, but note bending is nearly impossible.

Yunalis Zarai Biography

LOUD MAGAZINE 2012 7

Music is one of the most powerful forces of uni-fication. It has the power to heal, the power to

help, the power to inspire, and the power to change.

Yuna understands the importance of music and has the ability to write songs that transcend any and all boundaries. With her soft vocals and warm acoustic guitar, this singer-songwriter crafts intriguing and infectious ruminations on life, love, and so much more.

Growing up in Malaysia, Yuna was first inspired by the universal appeal of acts like No Doubt, The Cranberries, and Fiona Apple. At the age of 19, while in law school, she picked up a guitar and began to fervently write. She released her self-titled EP in Malaysia in 2008. The single “Deeper Conversation” became a massive success and went on to win the title of Best English Song at the 2009 AIM Awards, Malaysia’s national music awards. Yuna swept the ceremony, garnering Best Pop Song and Song of the Year for her Malay song, “Dan Sebenarnya”.

Yuna joined FADER Label in summer 2010 and released her digital EP Decorate in March 2011, which had fans, critics from Billboard, KEXP, The New York Post, and even Russell Simmons himself, who raved, “an amazing new singer…her music is incredible”, all instantly praising her talents.

Also in 2011, SPIN featured Yuna in their Buzzcatcher piece, “Eight Bands You Need to Hear Now” and she gave a stellar performance before a packed audience at MTV Iggy’s “Best New Band in the World” concert in New York City.

Yuna was a finalist in the “Best New Band in the World” competition and the show aired live on MTV’s HD Screen in New York’s

legendary Times Square and was also streamed live worldwide on MTVIggy.com.

In January 2012, Yuna released “Live Your Life”, the first single from her forthcoming full-length album. It started getting airplay immediately at Sirius – The Loft, KCRW and KROQ. The music video premiered on MTV2 and was featured on the homepage of VEVO.

Most people in Malaysia did not understand what is the true definition of mainstream, indie and underground. The older generation used to think

that indie music and underground music are bad. This perception is totally unacceptable. They should know what indie music and underground music

are all about before making statement that will hurt people who support the movement of indie and underground band.

.Independent

In popular music, independent music often abbreviated as indie. It is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an

autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. There are a number of cultural and philosophical traits which could be

more useful in pinpointing what indie music is about than specific musical styles or commercial ownership. Indie artists are concerned more with self-

expression than commercial considerations (though, again, this is a stance that is affected by many artists, including hugely commercially successful

ones). A do-it-yourself sensibility, which originated with punk in the 1970s is often associated with indie, with people in the scene being involved in

bands, labels, nights and zines.Internet technology allows artists to introduce their music to a potentially

enormous audience at low cost without necessarily affiliating with a major recording label. Most artists maintain their own Web sites as well as having

a presence on sites such as Myspace.com. Technological advances such as message board, music blogs, and social networks are also being used by

independent music companies to make big advances in the business.

LOUD MAGAZINE 2012 13

In August 2002, in an art institute at Cikini, central Jakarta, two lover from the fine art faculty Rio & Sari decided to form a band together with

their fellow in the faculty named Saleh. This was

the first formation of White Shoes

& The Couples Company, which

features Sari in vocal & violin, Rio on rhythm guitar and Saleh on

melody guitar. The three of them made their first

debut in this formation in a college event. However, the

trio formation diverged from their original plan where actually Sari and Rio had keenly asked a

married couple from the music faculty to join the band the couples was

Ricky Surya Virgana & Mela

Virgana. Yet the couple was hard to meet since

they were busy lecturing

and covering for orchestras. Several months

later, the couple join White Shoes &

The Couples Company with Ricky on Bass and cello and Mela

on viola, keyboards and piano.

The Band’s acquaintance with it’s current manager Indra

Ameng was another story. Indra Ameng was

then already a well-known manager. Previously he was the

manager of an old famous band in the

1990’s called Rumahsakit.

Nevertheless, White Shoes & The Couples Company and Indra

Ameng did not meet in the world of music, but the world of visual art. This was because Indra Ameng happened to

be a visual artist and a

program coordinator in

an artist’ initiative space in

Jakarta, called ruangrupa. At the

beginning, White Shoes & The Couples

Company did not have a drummer. Thus, Ricky initiated to ask a friend

at his faculty namely John Navid a.k.a Lau Kun Sin for position of

additional drummer to play in one event at the

BB’s Bar. How ever, as the time goes by and

according to necessities, John

eventually became a permanent drummer in

2004. Thus, the final formation of White

Shoes & The Couples Company was set up.

LOCAL punk rockers One

Buck Short, known for their hit singles Fast Times and Kelibat Korupsi, are back with a full-fledged Malay album called Kampong Glam.

Two of the seven tracks from this second album, Carilah Duit and Pok Pok Bujang Lapok, the latter a coverversion of Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s famous

song from the 1959 film Pendekar Bujang Lapok, are already massive hits on local radio since the album’s release last week (retailed at RM21.90).

Kampong Glam showcases a new-found maturity for this bilingual band which had its share of ups and downs since 2001, including membership changes.
