CAPITOLFILE-MAGAZINE.COM 25 PHOTOGRAPH BY EVA IONESCO CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN doesn’t hold back when I ask why he’s never visited the Washington area. “I didn’t want to come during the Bush era,” he says matter-of-factly. “I’ve always thought it a beautiful city; I’m very excited to see the architecture. And now the Obama era has made it the coolest city in the US.” The Paris-based Louboutin brings his famed sky-high styles and glossy red soles to Neiman Marcus at Tysons Galleria October 24. Judging by the turnout to his other appearances across the US, you can expect a fren- zied fan base worthy of his rock-star status. “I started my company with my own little shop, so I always want to keep that contact with my clients,” he says. “Shoes are an element of conversation between people, but they’re made to be worn. I like to be surprised by how women wear my designs, and I love also that they don’t hold back, telling me what they like and dislike. That all diffuses itself in my brain back in my studio.” His fall collection is indeed a chic amalgam of romance, sex appeal and luxe techniques. Louboutin’s Lady Page pump, for example, is adorned with a ruffled bow—“handmade by one person,” he points out—while the Ronda Dina Damas is an ankle-strap d’Orsay pump crafted in a brocade the designer found in Damascus. “It’s important to me to seek out great handicrafts, so I’ve been collecting these beautiful damasks from Syria,” he says. “You can’t expect to make 20,000 pairs of shoes with them, but doing this teaches you patience, attention to detail and, regarding people, respect.” And while he’s enamored of our first lady, don’t expect Louboutin to force a pair of red soles upon her anytime soon. “I respect freedom of spirit and freedom in general; I think it’s the most important thing in the world, so we all must make our own choices.” Sounds like Louboutin has timed his visit to perfection.laurie brookins Heels Hill Famed shoe designer Christian Louboutin makes his inaugural area appearance at Neiman Marcus this month.
