Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome

There is plenty to look forward to in the Lotto NRFL this weekend with the sec-ond double-header of the season set to unfold!

The Premier League is now starting to take shape with a top three consisting of early leaders Hamilton Wanderers, Birkenhead United and Glenfield Rovers opening up a gap between themselves and the rest.

The Women’s Premier is taking on a similar look to its male equivalent with three sides – Three Kings United, Claudelands Rovers and Forrest Hill-Milford United – all locked on points at the top.

Ellerslie now have the lead in Division One after unseating previous incumbents Tauranga City United while North Force and Fencibles United are the front run-ners in Division Two.

In the programme this week we preview Rounds 6 and 7 of each of the divisions and feature photos from Phototek of Three Kings United’s remarkable 10-0 win over Waitakere City at Fred Taylor Park in the Premier League, during which former All White Allan Pearce scored four and Tom Konusi hit a hat-trick.

We also introduce a new feature with graphs plotting the progress of every team in each division so far this season - we hope you enjoy seeing how they’ve all got on since the opening day!

Our new Lotto NRFL-dedicated social media continues to be the place to go for all score updates, results, goal details and other news - remember to tag us @LottoNRFL with your updates from the sideline!

Good luck for your game!

Western Springs vs Glenfield Rovers

Seddon Fields | Thursday 23 April | Kick-off: 7.15pm | Referee: Glenn Lochrie,

Assistant Referees: Allan Wilson, Rajesh Kumar

Springs arrested their two-game losing streak with a draw against winless East Coast Bays last weekend and coach Neil Emblen will have been pleased with the resolve shown by his side as they were thumped 7-1 by Birkenhead in the previous round. They are still chasing their first win however and it would be a surprise if that came against the undefeated reigning champions.

East Coast Bays vs Onehunga Sports Bay City Park | Satuday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox,

Assistant Referees: Jeremy Ferguson, Ravinesh Kumar

Bays are one of three sides without a win and are only being saved from bottom spot by the poor form of Melville. They are therefore in great need of the points here but will not find it easy against a team they have previously struggled against, Sports having beaten them 3-1 and 2-0 last season. A famous name is leading the way for the

visitors, Wynton Rufer’s son Caleb the side’s top scorer.

Three Kings United vs Birkenhead United Keith Hay Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Norman,

Assistant Referees: Martin Neale, Greg Woo

Confidence will be sky high for both these sides as they are each coming off hugely-impressive wins, Three Kings having put 10 unanswered goals past Waitakere and Birkenhead outclassing Bay Olympic 6-0. A similar scoreline seems very unlikely here but there is no doubt this should be a highly-entertaining affair. Three Kings’ Allan Pearce is leading the golden boot race with seven goals.

Eastern Suburbs vs Waitakere City

Madills Farm | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Nick Waldron,

Assistant Referees: Dimitry Sabitov, Caleb Moffatt

After a promising start, the wheels have come off for Waitakere with a pair of heavy defeats, 8-2 to Birkenhead and 10-0 to Three Kings. They conceded only two goals in their first three matches so Colin Tuaa will want to see a return to those more resolute days. Suburbs will be full of energy after sitting out last week due to a flooded pitch at Melville.

Bay Olympic vs Central United

Olympic Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Fisher, Assistant Referees: Hayden Tutbury, John Bennett

These sides have had similar starts and are both occupying places in the middle of the table. The top four is well within reach though and a pair of good results over the Anzac weekend double header would leave each in a strong position going forward. Only four players have scored for Bay Olympic and Carl Jorgensen will be looking for others to relieve the pressure on top-scorer Jared Colligan.

Hamilton Wanderers vs Melville United

Porritt Stadium | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Kerr, Assistant Referees: Mark Owens, Hubert Bakx

Bottom-placed Melville were left kicking their heels last weekend due to their postponement and that was hardly ideal for Steve Williams at a time when his charges need every opportunity to pick up some points. They are the only team yet to get off the mark and will not be expected to finally do so against the leaders but league form often goes out the door in local derbies.

Claudelands Rovers vs Glenfield Rovers

Galloway Park | Sunday 26April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Brett Willis,

Assistant Referees: Dominic Hopkirk, Brett Chibnall

This is the only Women’s Premier match of the weekend and it’s a fitting clash to claim such a billing. Glenfield and Claudelands occupied second and third on the table respectively last season and appear to be among the title contenders again this time around. Bar their one slip up against Western Springs, Claudelands have enjoyed an excellent start and made a major statement in beating leaders Three Kings on their own patch last weekend. They are now equal on points with Kings and will go top if they avoid defeat here, albeit having played one more game. Glenfield are only a win away from sharing the lead themselves though, having managed to take the points in an amazing 6-5 victory over Fencibles in the previous round. Each side possesses a striker who can lay claim to being the best in the division with Glenfield’s Katie Rood and Claudelands’ Helen Collins looking likely to fight it out for the golden boot, although Forrest Hill’s Tayla O’Brien may have something to say about that.

6 | Programme 2015

Ellerslie AFC vs Metro FC

Michaels Ave | Friday 24 April | Kick-off: 7pm | Referee: Cory Mills,

Assistant Referees: Khalid El Gana, Paul Mason

This central Auckland derby will have plenty riding on it as Ellerslie are now the league leaders and Metro are one of those looking to knock them off their new-found perch. Ellerslie climbed to the top with a thrilling 3-2 victory over fellow promotion contenders Tauranga last weekend while Metro also earned an excellent result, winning at Takapuna by the same scoreline.

Takapuna vs Mangere United

Taharoto Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.30pm | Referee: John McCoskrie,

Assistant Referees: Michael Dickason, Tom Woo

Mangere will be in high spirits after claiming their first victory since the opening day with a 3-2 success at Forrest Hill and it seems as if their form depends greatly on Ernesto Lopez. Six of his seven goals have come in those two wins so it is clear who the Takapuna defence must focus their attention on. The hosts have a dangerous marksman of their own though in five-goal Tommy Miller.

North Shore United vs Hibiscus Coast

Allen Hill Stadium | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Allan Wilson,

Assistant Referees: Kevin Turnock, Chris Casey

The division’s only northern derby on Saturday brings together a pair of sides sharing promotion-chasing ambitions but approaching the match in contrasting moods. While North Shore went on the goal rampage last week against Mt Albert, the Coasters were thumped by Waiuku in a result that has put a dampener on their otherwise promising start to the season.

Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Tauranga City United

Anderson Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor, Assistant Referees: Allan Tobin, Neil Tobin

Nick Snedden must have thought things couldn’t get any worse after the 10-0 drubbing Mt Albert received at Hibiscus Coast but last Friday’s 8-2 loss to North Shore wasn’t much of an improvement. To make matters worse, Mt Albert are now facing one of the league’s stand-out teams but are at least buoyed by the return of goalkeeper Neil Dayal and defender Barry Donachie from suspension.

Ngaruawahia AFC vs Forrest Hill Milford

Centennial Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Carl Watkins, Assistant Referees: Sean Coon, Andrew McAllister

Ngaruawahia had the weekend off after the postponement of their game against Manurewa and will probably have relished the chance to regroup after a winless start to the campaign. An away win will be the favoured outcome here but the hosts will surely claim their first victory at some point over the coming weeks and will look to capitalise on the effects of Forrest Hill’s lengthy trek south.

Waiuku AFC vs Manurewa AFC

Massey Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: James Ashford, Assistant Referees: Peter Lamb, Ravi Prasad

Much more than local pride will be on the line for Manurewa in this southern derby as they are among three sides yet to win and are the only ones without a goal to their name. They will be disappointed to have missed out on the opportunity to meet fellow strugglers Ngaruawahia last week and are not facing Waiuku at a good time after the hosts hit five against Hibiscus Coast.

50 Years of Local Pride

Papakura City vs Onehunga Mangere

McLennan Park | Friday 24 April | Kick-off: 7pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault,

Assistant Referees: Anthony Barnes, Dave Doidge

Onehunga Mangere returned empty handed from their trek to Tauranga to meet AFC Fury but could have taken something from the game with better finishing and will look for more accuracy on Friday evening. Papakura pulled off one of the results of the season so far in becoming the first side to beat leaders North Force and are now within touching distance of the top of the table.

AFC Fury vs Te Atatu AFC

Maramatanga Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Gordon Campbell, Assistant Referees: Thomas Fritz, Daniel Wilkinson

These sides are both new to the league but will know little about each other after playing in different local divisions last season. Fury have adapted to life at this level more quickly by notching two wins while Te Atatu are still waiting for their first three pointer. They have proven difficult to get the better of though in holding three of their five opponents to draws.

Papatoetoe AFC vs Claudelands Rovers

Murdoch Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Avnit Maharaj, Assistant Referees: Gareth Jacobs, John Schipper

There is nothing separating these teams on the ladder with each posting identical records of two wins and three losses. The points could therefore go either way and both sides will see this fixture as winnable. Philip Paul has accounted for over half of Papatoetoe’s goals while the Claudelands net-busting has been shared around with Jack Connor, Darius Kubuya and Ewan Oliver all striking twice.

Oratia United vs Lynn Avon

Parrs Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Gordon Lee, Assistant Referees: Chris Scott, Peter Caffell

Lynn-Avon finally stopped the losing rot in drawing 1-1 with Te Atatu last weekend, picking up their first point in the process. Coach Karl Phipps will be hoping that can be the basis for an improved set of results but his charges will again be the underdogs in this western derby as Oratia have lost only once and are just two points off top spot.

Fencibles United vs Manukau City AFC

Riverhills Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Paul Shakes, Assistant Referees: Thomas Lee, Charlie Tseng

This is the highlight of the Division Two action and features a pair of sides both looking to launch promotion bids. Manukau have made light of their status as a newly-promoted outfit with an undefeated start – they are now the only team yet to lose – but will face one of their toughest challenges so far in Fencibles, for whom Zane Christiansen is scoring at more than a goal a game.

Albany United vs North Force

Rosedale Park | Saturday 25 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andy Holdsworth,

Assistant Referees: Reza Al Reba, Nick Kang

This is as close as North Force can get to a local derby so are likely to put in plenty of effort here, especially as they will be looking to bounce back after suffering their first defeat last weekend. Having gone all the way to Papakura for that loss, they will be relieved at making a shorter trip this time and will view one-win Albany as there for the taking.

8 | Programme 2015

Waitakere City vs Hamilton Wanderers

Fred Taylor Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox,

Assistant Referees: Martin Neale, Gordon Lee

If Waitakere fail to claim any points from Saturday’s encounter with Eastern Suburbs, then it could turn into a costly long weekend as they will not be fancied by many to earn a win here. Depending on results elsewhere, that could leave them precariously positioned near the foot of the table so upsetting the form book could be a necessity as early pace setters Wanderers come to town.

Melville United vs East Coast Bays Gower Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Wolken,

Assistant Referees: Brett Willis, Daniel Wilkinson

The Anzac weekend schedule has thrown up a contrasting pair of challenges for Melville – first they must deal with title contenders Hamilton before meeting second-from-bottom East Coast Bays. Given they are unlikely to claim that elusive first win over the leaders, this game is therefore of great significance but Bays are in a similar

boat so will be just as desperate for the points.

Three Kings United vs Bay Olympic Keith Hay Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens,

Assistant Referees: Greg Woo, Avnit Maharaj

Three Kings are promisingly poised behind the leading trio on the table and a good Anzac weekend could see them emerge as dark horses for a title push. They are fortunate to have been drawn at home on both days and will look to take advantage of that. Unbeaten Birkenhead will be a tricky proposition on Saturday so Neil Sykes will have identified the visit of Bay Olympic as a must-win.

Birkenhead United vs Eastern Suburbs

Shephers Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Kerr,

Assistant Referees: Tom Woo, Dimitry Sabitov

The hosts will go in as strong favourites here but Suburbs will take heart from the performance of fellow promoted side Western Springs against Birkenhead, which saw Springs pull of a late comeback to draw 2-2. Birkenhead did dispatch the other promoted team, Melville, 3-0 though so have proven they are capable of dealing with these sorts of challenges.

Onehunga Sports vs Glenfield Rovers

Waikaraka Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Fisher, Assistant Referees: Mazhar Batoor, Steve Merriman

Glenfield did the double over Sports last season but were made to work hard, posting narrow winning margins on both occasions. Having come close to claiming a point in those clashes with the eventual champions, Onehunga coach Hiroshi Miyazawa will be keen to go one better this time. Glenfield will be looking to stay amongst the leaders though so will be in no mood for slip ups.

Western Springs vs Central United

Seddon Fields | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 5pm | Referee: Nick Waldron, Assistant Referees: Paul Mason, Caleb Moffatt

With Springs’ rapid ascent through the leagues, this is another central Auckland derby to add to the list and the evening kick-off time means a healthy crowd could gather at Seddon Fields. There are plenty of similarities between the sides as they are both of a youthful disposition and look to play in an attractive, possession-based manner.

Forrest Hill Milford United vs Manurewa

Becroft Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: James Ashford,

Assistant Referees: Mike Williamson, Peter Caffell

If Manurewa fail to take anything from Saturday’s derby against Waiuku, they will be in even greater need of some points here, especially if the sides around them earn good results on Saturday. Forrest Hill have been handed a very favourable Anzac weekend with both matches against sides in the bottom three so will expect to be sitting pretty come Monday evening.

Ngaruawahia United vs Hibiscus Coast

Centennial Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Norman,

Assistant Referees: Sean Coon, Dominic Hopkirk

The Coasters will go from facing the second-best ranked side in the league to the second-worst two days later and will want to make sure the effort needed to match North Shore does not leave the tank empty for Monday. It’s a game they will be very much expected to win as they are already 11 points better off than Ngaruawahia.

Waiuku vs Mt Albert Ponsonby

Massey Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Carl Watkins,

Assistant Referees: Bruce McGrath, Mark Fleming

This game is likely to be of great importance to Mt Albert as they will find it difficult to upset a classy Tauranga side on Saturday, meaning at least a point will be a must at Waiuku. Ominously for Mt Albert, Luke Chapman scored his first goal of the season for Waiuku last weekend and, if he can recapture the inspirational form of 2014, the visitors’ defence will have their hands full.

Takapuna vs Tauranga City United

Taharoto Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Hayden Tutbury, Assistant Referees: Thomas Lee, Ravinesh Kumar

Tauranga have been asked to cover plenty of miles over Anzac weekend in being drawn away on both days and will want to make sure all that travelling is worthwhile. In contrast, Takapuna do not have to leave Taharoto Park at all and will have targeted a points’ haul of at least four from their home-based double header, with this appearing the tougher of their two assignments.

Metro FC vs Mangere United

Phyllis Street | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 3pm | Referee: Allan Wilson, Assistant Referees: Neil Tobin, Allan Tobin

If you are unsure of what game to take in on Monday then this could be a good bet as there was plenty of entertainment in this fixture last season, Mangere eventually running out as 4-3 winners. Mangere have been involved in plenty of high-scoring encounters in this campaign as well with none of their games featuring less than four goals.

Ellerslie vs North Shore United

Michaels Ave | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 5pm | Referee: Rajesh Kumar, Assistant Referees: Michael Dickason, Ravi Prasad

This table-topper is the highlight of Monday’s Division One schedule and there will be great interest from third-placed Tauranga in the outcome. Ellerslie proved they are capable of fending off the challenges of their title rivals in beating Tauranga 3-2 last weekend and will be looking to repeat that trick against Shore, for whom Reid Drake has scored five goals – an excellent return for a midfielder.

50 Years of Local Pride

North Force vs AFC Fury

Kamo Sports Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 12.30pm | Referee: Chris Casey,

Assistant Referees: Kevin Turnock, Jordan Morrow

This is a mammoth task for league newcomers Fury in more ways than one. Not only do they have to make the biggest trip in the entire NRFL system, at the end of it they will have to face the division’s most dominant side. Any sort of positive result would therefore be a major achievement, although North Force revealed the first chink in their armour with last week’s loss to Papakura.

Papakura City vs Papatoetoe

McLennan Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andy Holdsworth, Assistant Referees: Peter Lamb, John Bennett

Papakura will be targeting a maximum return from their Anzac weekend exploits as they have been drawn at home in both matches and are facing sides they will be confident of beating. Underdogs tend to lift themselves for local derbies though and Papatoetoe will be no pushovers after recovering from a shaky start to the season, winning two of their last three games.

Oratia United vs Claudelands Rovers

Parrs Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Tony Wall, Assistant Referees: John Kimber, Charlie Tseng

Claudelands bounced back from a heavy opening day defeat to win their next two games but have since slumped to consecutive losses and the porous nature of their recent defending will be a concern to Jim Keaney. They conceded nine goals in those two defeats and now have the league’s worst defensive record – a weakness joint golden boot leader Mark Withers will look to exploit.

Fencibles United vs Albany United

Riverhills Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Paul Shakes, Assistant Referees: Anthony Barnes, Eric Yu

Home advantage has counted for little for Albany with the only game on their own patch resulting in a comprehensive defeat. The three points they have collected so far have all come on the road so they can take heart from that in visiting second-placed Fencibles. The east Aucklanders are on their way to turning Riverhills into a fortress though, having won both of their two home matches.

Te Atatu vs Onehunga Mangere

Te Atatu Peninsula Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Jeremy Ferguson, Assistant Referees: Martin Huang, Robin Van Niekerk

Failure to beat Fury on Saturday would mean Te Atatu will still be in search of their first win here so this could prove to be a key moment in their season. After hitting a double on the opening weekend, Leome Funafuti has not scored again for Te Atatu and coach James Colligan could do with a goalscorer right now as none of his other players have struck more than once.

Manukau City vs Lynn Avon United

Walter Massey Park | Monday 27 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault,

Assistant Referees: Dave Doidge, Morgan Breuer

This would appear to be a banker for the home side as they are still to be beaten while a first win is proving elusive for Lynn-Avon. Manukau have the best attacking record in the league while only Claudelands have conceded more than Lynn-Avon, of all which points towards a comfortable victory for the hosts so Lynn-Avon will need to be at their best.
