Ryan White• Totally normal teenage boy, born

with hemophilia (a blood clotting disease).

• Spent childhood in the hospital.

• When diagnosed with AIDS, Ryan’s home town, Kokomo, Indiana responded with fear and hatred towards him.

• Discriminated against.

• Faced many stereotypes:

• Only gays got AIDS

• He could spread it easily

• Gave speeches and spoke out to the world about his disease. He wanted to prevent the fear and hatred.

Ryan White

• “My name is Ryan White. I am 16 years old. I have hemophilia, and I have AIDS.” ~Ryan White

• “I came face-to-face with death at thirteen years old.” ~Ryan White

• “At 13, all-American and honors student Ryan White learned he had a deadly disease with no cure.” ~Back cover

Ryan White (cont.)

• Ryan was innocent because he was an all-American teenage boy, born with hemophilia (blood clotting disease).

• He contracted AIDS from a daily blood transfusion he was using to help his hemophilia. He didn’t deserve being born sick, it was just by chance that his parents were carriers.

• One of the reasons someone is innocent, is being a child. Ryan was 13 when he got AIDS and died at 18.

Ryan’s Obituary

• Obituaries were all over the country and in almost every news paper.

• Re-tells his story and all of his many accomplishments.

Romeo and Juliet

• Juliet’s nurse and the Friar have to arrange the wedding, because both Romeo and Juliet are too young to know how to handle it.

• Juliet’s dad doesn’t want her to marry Paris because she is too young. He shows us this when he says:– “My child is yet a stranger in the world. She hath not

seen the change of fourteen years. Let two more summers wither in their pride, ere we may think her ripe to be a bride.”

– She is very young, only thirteen or fourteen, and she’s involved with the feud between families.

Romeo and Juliet

• Romeo is IN LOVE with Rosaline one day, and by that night, he is ready to marry Juliet. Love is usually a symbol of innocents and Romeo is definitely in love.– Even though Romeo kills Tybalt, he died for

the wrong reason. He didn’t die as a punishment for his crime, but because he and Juliet were in love.

After the First Death

• Kevin McMann was killed by whatever drugs were on the candy. He didn’t know any better, not to eat the candy.

– “The child’s feet protruded from the covering: tiny green sneakers, almost new, white shoestrings tied neatly, pale green socks bunched at the ankles.”

– “An unwrapped stick of Spearmint gum. An orange crayon. A curled up length of string, the kind a boy might use to fly a kite or catch a fish.”

Kate

• Kate is innocent because she wasn’t even supposed to be on the bus, her uncle was.

• She was trying to help Miro just before he killed her.

• “This time, everything had stopped the way a watch stops, and the pain was her body and her body was the pain and she knew exactly what had happened and what was going to happen. The gun had gone off. She was caught between inhale and exhale. The pain… wow… breath-caught dying mommy and daddy I can’t breathe…”

My Sister’s Keeper

• Ana Fitzgerald– She’s 13 years old, and the only

reason her parents had her was so they could use her body to save her sister Kate, who has leukemia.

– Trying to figure out who she is and trying to be a normal teenager, but she spends so much time in the hospital its hard for her to have a normal life and friends.

•Ana decides to sue her parents for medical emancipation (rights to her own body) so she doesn’t have to save her sister any more.

•Right away, she has to make a hard decision to stop saving her sister, which may mean Kate will die.

•Part way through the case, she realizes she can’t handle this alone, and wishes she could go to her mom for help.

•On the way home from the court case, she and her lawyer get in a car crash and Ana dies. She was the least expected person to die, because she was so young, and helpless.

A Walk to Remember

• Jamie is 16 and has leukemia.

• She and Landon fall in love and she dies shortly after their wedding.

• Landon: “I might kiss you”

• Jamie: “I might be bad at it”– This bit of them talking, shows that Jamie is

legitimately innocent.

Jack Dawson• “I saw that on a

nickelodeon once, and I always wanted to do it.”

• “Well, yes ma’am, I do… I mean, I got everything I need right here. I got air in my lungs, a few blank sheets of paper. I mean , I love waking up in the morning not knowing what’s gonna happen, or who I’m gonna meet, where I’m gonna end up.”

The Unsinkable

ship

• The boat itself was innocent because it was new and “young”, but didn’t make it to America, it wasn’t rescued.

• “It's been 84 years, and I can still smell the fresh paint. The china had never been used. The sheets had never been slept in. Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.”– The ship was young, and it died in a sense.
