How To

Lose Weightby Lowering Glucose

Obesity shortens life span by eight to ten years on average compared with people of normal weight. For every 33 extra pounds, the risk of an early death increases by about 30%.3 So beyond just looking good, shedding those extra pounds is a proven lifesaving strategy.

Recent research places the overall risks of obesity into a clear perspective. Health care costs associated with obesity exceed those associated with smoking!4 So now that we recognize obesity as a complex metabolic disease, and not merely a risk factor,5 it’s time to define it.

Obesity occurs when excess calorie consumption overwhelms the body’s ability to expend calories as energy.6-10 At that point, the obesity disease process causes further increases in body fat and blood glucose levels. It alters the body’s pulmonary, endocrine, and immunologi-cal functions.5

Fat tissue, especially abdominal fat, is not a passive fat storehouse. It’s an active endocrine organ capable of synthesizing a variety of molecules and releasing them into the bloodstream, where they can dis-rupt the normal metabolic balance and cause a host of other diseases11,12 includ-ing diabetes,12 hypertension and car-diovascular disease,11,12 non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD),13,14 liver and colorectal cancer,14 and various diges-tive diseases.13

So it is very easy to understand why obesity increases your risk of death by 200–300%3 — and why it may be rob-bing nearly 2 out of 3 people of quality and quantity of life.1,5

For years, you’ve heard that the answer to weight loss is quite simply more exercise and a balanced diet. And it’s true that body weight often does come down when you strike a balance between energy (food) intake and energy expenditure (physical activity).8-10

But the reality is that there are many other poorly understood contributing factors … like the body’s response to environmental stimuli, genetic predis-position, and hormonal abnormalities.5 It’s time to acknowledge that this is a complex problem that requires a multi-pronged solution.

since green coffee beans contain higher amounts of chlorogenic acid and other polyphenol com-pounds that are lost to a great degree during the roasting process.

In a 12-week, placebo-controlled human study, 30 overweight or obese volunteers took either-green coffee bean extract or a placebo, dissolved in instant coffee. The extract produced an average 11 pound weight loss, a decrease in glucose absorp-tion, and an increase in glucose utilization. This decrease in glucose caused the body to metabolize stored body fat, which decreased the mass and amount of body fat.27

In a subsequent 22-week crossover study, par-ticipants took 350 mg of green coffee bean extract 3 times a day for 6 weeks, 350 mg of green coffee bean extract 2 times a day for 6 weeks, and a pla-cebo for 6 weeks in a randomized, double-blind manner. In between each 6-week phase, they took nothing for 2 weeks. They made no significant changes in their calorie intake or in the percent-age of carbs, fat, and proteins they ate. And no

In addition to interfering with glucose synthesis and release in the body,25 chlorogenic acid reduces after-meal blood glucose spikes.

By analyzing combined data on over 450,000 people, scientists have discovered that decaffein-ated coffee provides the same protective effects as caffeinated coffee.17-21 So coffee’s ability to affect metabolism doesn’t stem from caffeine … but from a polyphenol called chlorogenic acid found in green coffee beans.

It seems that chlorogenic acid inhibits both glu-cose absorption22 and the amylase enzyme that breaks down starch into sugar for absorption by the body.23 Chlorogenic acid helps prevent diabe-tes by inhibiting weight gain … which it does by reducing glucose levels2 and decreasing intestinal calorie absorption.23,24

In addition to interfering with glucose synthesis and release in the body,25 chlorogenic acid reduces after-meal blood glucose spikes that can last for hours or even a whole day.25 It lowers insulin activ-ity and reduces body fat accumulation,26 resulting in weight loss.

To investigate chlorogenic acid’s weight-reducing effect, scientists used green coffee bean extracts

significant change in exercise during the study. The green coffee bean extract was the only real difference.

And these were the results: 24

• Weight decreased over 17.6 pounds on average, with some participants losing over 22.7 pounds

• BMI decreased 2.92 on average • Bodyfat decreased 4.44% on average,

with some participants losing 6.44% body fat • Heartrate decreased 2.56 beats per minute

on average • 37% of the participants that were considered

pre-obesity (25–30 BMI) returned to a normal-weight range24

A follow-up to this study showed that, in contrast to food-restricted diets, 87.5% of the participants maintained their weight loss after the study24 … and no side effects were observed.

Based on all the research to date, green coffee bean extracts provide a viable way to simultaneously effect weight loss and moderate glucose levels.
