This settle- ment was declared an indepen- dent municipality in 1756. However, valuable examples of rock art have been found, pro- ving that there were already hu- man settlements in this area in Prehistoric times and later on, communities that lived first un- der Muslim and then Christian rule, following the Reconquest. Los Barrios is located on the fa- mous Ruta del Toro (Route of the Bull) and part of the town falls within the boundaries of the pro- tected marshland around the Ri- ver Palmones and the Alcornoca- les Natural Park. In fact, the most precious asset of this area is its natural surroundings, stunning scenery that is of great environ- mental value. The coastline zone stretches for two kilometres along the Bay of Algeciras, bet- ween the mouth of the rivers Pal- mones and Guadarranque, and here you can find the stretch of golden fine sand beach known as Playa de Palmones. The marshland around the River Palmones from which it takes its name is an important protected natural reserve that covers three different biotopes: the estuary, the marshes and a chain of du- nes stretching for one kilometre. This habitat is home to many dif- ferent species of animals and plants, such as evergreen pista- che, myrtle, black hawthorn and formations of rushes that are pe- culiar to marshland in the pro- vince of Cadiz. The other natural space surroun- ding Los Barrios, the Alcornocales Park, is another great attraction for tourists thanks to its beauti- ful scenery, its wealth of vegeta- tion and wildlife, and the option of trying out a wide range of out- door sporting activities such as hiking, climbing and caving. You can also go pony trekking, cycling and do water sports on the Charco Redondo Reservoir, an artificial lake in the moun- tains that offers all kinds of lei- sure facilities, or on the Guadacorte Lake, located in a beautiful residential area. Other emblematic sites in Los Barrios include: the Bacinete Caves with important exam- ples of rock painting and a ne- cropolis; the Montera del Torero (Bullfighter's Hat), an impressive rock mass that has been eroded by the wind into this curious shape; the Arroyo del Tiradero, a stream surroun- ded by dense vegetation, in the Alcornocales Park; the Betty Molesworth Botanical Park, built as a tribute to the Australian botanist; and the Hoyo de Don Pedro viewing points, on the slopes of the Sierra Palma, where you can gaze out at magnificent views of the Bay of Algeciras, the marshes and other towns and villages such as Los Cortijillos, Guadacorte, Ciudad Jardín and Palmones. In the town of Los Barrios itself, several kilometres from the co- ast, there are also various sites that are well worth a visit, such as: the Plaza de la Iglesia, where the Church of San Isidro Labrador stands with its 31 me- tre bell tower; the Town Hall and the magnificent home of the Urrutia family; the former Corn Exchange, which is one of the best preserved examples in Andalusia, dating back to the reign of Charles III, and currently houses the Natural History Museum; the former Hospital de la Caridad (Charity Hospital); the Parodys House, the former Casino or Clubhouse, which is now home to the Isidro Gómez Cultural Centre, dedicated to the author of "Pasodoble a Los Barrios "; La Montera Bull Ring and the Plaza de la Constitución, a large square with many shops, bars and restaurants where you can try out some of the delicious local food. español english Los Barrios Los Barrios La Montera del Torero se trata de una mole de roca arenisca rodeada de alcor- noques y arbustos, en cuyo entorno se encuentran diversas manifestaciones del arte rupestre neolítico de la comarca. Nearby there is a recreational area of the same name, which offers good parking faci- lities, picnic tables, barbecues, fountain and a children's park, all sheltered from the wind and sun. In Molinos del Raudal, you can relax under the shade of a leafy olive or ash tree or prepare a deli- cious bite to eat on the barbecues available to visitors. The refres- hing and peaceful presence of the Raudal pools seem to forget the previous and near turbulence. La Villa de Los Barrios dispone de fiestas todos los meses del año, destacan- do la tradicional Tagarniná, celebrada en Carnavales y el "toro embolao", fes- tejo organizado el Domingo de Resurrección. En Abril destaca la Romería de San Isidro Labrador, donde en honor al Santo, se sale con carretas y se hace noche en el Área Recreativa de La Montera. Durante el verano se da toda una serie de celebraciones como la feria de Palmones, la festividad de Ntra. Señora del Carmen, o las Veladas de los distintos Distritos Municipales. Dos ferias que destacan en la Agenda de eventos de la Villa de Los Barrios son la Feria Ruta del Toro, que tiene lugar la semana anterior a la Semana Santa y la Feria Internacional de la Caza, la Pesca y Turismo Rural (FICAPT). Los Barrios has celebrations all year round, such as the traditional festival known as Tagarniná, during the town's Carnival, and the "toro embolao", a bull run orga- nised on Easter Sunday. In April, the locals take part in a pilgrimage in honour of San Isidro Labrador, riding in carts and spending the night in La Montera Recreational Area. There is a cluster of celebrations that take place during the summer months, such as Palmones' Fair, the celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and various neighbourhood festivals and street parties. The two major fairs in Los Barrios are the Feria Ruta del Toro (Route of the Bull Fair), which takes place the week before Easter Week, and the International Hunting, Fishing and Rural Tourism Fair (FICAPT). This town boasts a wide range of different dishes, made from the finest ingre- dients offered by the land and the sea: wood smoked chorizo, skewered sardi- nes, paprika flavoured pork dripping, cockles, the ever pork scratchings, wild asparagus, nettle, spotted golden thistles, shrimp fritters, venison stew, wild boar stew, bull steak and free range chicken in sauce. The influence of Arabic cuisine is reflected in the use of spices such as marjoram, oregano, mint, rose- mary and basil. There are certain dishes that we have inherited directly from the Arabs, such as la moruna or carne a la moruna (Moorish marinated meat), caracoles al poleo (snails with pennyroyal) and olives. The seaside village of Palmones has become a gastronomic hot spot for tourists with discerning palates. A wide variety of restaurants lines the village's typical narrow streets, dominated by the nearby river marshes. Los rasgos más característicos de la geografía del parque son los llamados "canutos", una serie de estrechos ríos fluviales que se concentran en el extremo meridional del parque y nos aproximan a lo que fueron primitivas selvas ibéricas. One of the latest major projects taking place in the Alcornocales Natural Park is the Corredor Verde Dos Bahías (Two Bays Green Corridor) which links the town of Puerto Real to Los Barrios through former livestock rou- tes. The most characteristic features of this park are the "canutos", a series of narrow streams that flow through the southern end of the park towards what were once ancient Iberian forests. The protected marshlands surrounding the River Palmones are home to many different biotypes, wetlands, pastureland, orchards and grasslands. This natural space is per- ched in a strategic location, making it possible to catch a glimpse of diffe- rent species of birds in winter and during migration. La zona litoral del municipio abarca dos kilómetros de la Bahía de Algeciras, los comprendidos entre la desembocadura de los ríos Palmones y Guadarranque, donde se encuentra la Playa de Palmones, con sus finas arenas de tonos dorados. El río da nombre al Paraje de las Marismas del Río Palmones, una importante reserva natural que comprende tres biotopos distintos -el estuario, las maris- mas y una cadena de dunas de un kilómetro de longitud- donde encuentran su hábitat multitud de especies animales y vegeta- les como el lentisco, el mirto, el espino negro o unas peculiares formaciones de junco propias de las marismas gaditanas. El otro gran espacio natural de Los Barrios , el Parque de Los Alcornocales supone otro gran aliciente turístico gracias a sus preciosos parajes, a su rica y variada fauna y flora, así como por la posibilidad de realizar una gran variedad de actividades deportivas como senderismo, escalada o espeleología. También es posible realizar diver- sas rutas a caballo o en bicicleta y practicar deportes acuáticos en el Embalse Charco Redondo, un lago artificial rodeado de montes que cuenta con todo tipo de ins- talaciones para el ocio, o en el Lago de Guadacorte, situado en una hermosa zona residencial. Otros lugares emblemáticos del municipio son las Cuevas de Bacinete, donde se conservan importantes muestras de pinturas rupestres y una necrópolis; la Montera del Torero, una impresio- nante mole de roca que debido a la erosión provocada por el viento ha tomado esta curiosa forma; el Arroyo del Tiradero, un paraje natural de densa vegetación per- teneciente al Parque de Los Alcornocales; el Parque Botánico Betty Molesworth construido en honor a la botánica australiana del mismo nombre; y los Miradores del Hoyo de Don Pedro, situados en la ladera de Sierra Palma, desde donde se contem- plan unas magníficas vistas de la Bahía de Algeciras, las marismas y otros núcleos de población como Los Cortijillos, Guadacorte, Ciudad Jardín o Palmones. Dentro del centro urbano de Los Barrios , situado a varios kiló- metros de la costa, también existen lugares que merece la pena visitar, como la Plaza de la Iglesia, en donde se encuentran la Iglesia de San Isidro Labrador -con su torre campa- nario de 31 metros de altura-, el edificio del Ayuntamiento y la Casa de los Urrutia, magnífica construcción de estilo señorial. Tampoco debe pasarse por alto el Antiguo Pósito del Trigo -uno de los mejores conservados del reinado de Carlos III en Andalucía y que actualmente alberga el Museo de Historia Natural-, el Antiguo Hospital de la Caridad, la Casa Parodys, el Antiguo Casino -hoy en día sede de la Casa de la Cultura Isidro Gómez dedicada al autor del "Pasodoble a Los Barrios"-, la Plaza de Toros La Montera y la Plaza de la Constitución, donde se ubican una gran cantidad de comercios, locales de copas y res- taurantes en los que poder degus- tar la sabrosa cocina barreña.

Situado en la famosa Ruta delToro y con parte de su territorioincluido en el Paraje Natural delas Marismas del Río Palmonesy el Parque Natural de LosAlcornocales, Los Barrios tienesu bien más preciado en suentorno natural, de gran valorecológico y paisajístico. La zonalitoral del municipio abarca doskilómetros de la Bahía deAlgeciras, los comprendidosentre la desembocadura de losríos Palmones y Guadarranque,donde se encuentra la Playa dePalmones, con sus finas arenasde tonos dorados.
El río da nombre al Paraje de lasMarismas del Río Palmones,una importante reserva naturalque comprende tres biotoposdistintos -el estuario, las maris-mas y una cadena de dunas deun kilómetro de longitud- dondeencuentran su hábitat multitudde especies animales y vegeta-
les como el lentisco, el mirto, elespino negro o unas peculiaresformaciones de junco propiasde las marismas gaditanas.
El otro gran espacio natural de Los Barrios, el Parque de LosAlcornocales supone otro granaliciente turístico gracias a suspreciosos parajes, a su rica yvariada fauna y flora, así comopor la posibilidad de realizar unagran variedad de actividadesdeportivas como senderismo,escalada o espeleología.También es posible realizar diver-sas rutas a caballo o en bicicletay practicar deportes acuáticos en
el Embalse Charco Redondo, unlago artificial rodeado de montesque cuenta con todo tipo de ins-talaciones para el ocio, o en elLago de Guadacorte, situado enuna hermosa zona residencial.
Otros lugares emblemáticos delmunicipio son las Cuevas deBacinete, donde se conservanimportantes muestras de pinturasrupestres y una necrópolis; laMontera del Torero, una impresio-nante mole de roca que debido ala erosión provocada por el vientoha tomado esta curiosa forma; elArroyo del Tiradero, un paraje
natural de densa vegetación per-teneciente al Parque de LosAlcornocales; el Parque BotánicoBetty Molesworth construido enhonor a la botánica australianadel mismo nombre; y losMiradores del Hoyo de Don Pedro,situados en la ladera de SierraPalma, desde donde se contem-plan unas magníficas vistas de laBahía de Algeciras, las marismasy otros núcleos de poblacióncomo Los Cortijillos, Guadacorte,Ciudad Jardín o Palmones.
Dentro del centro urbano de LosBarrios, situado a varios kiló-metros de la costa, tambiénexisten lugares que merece lapena visitar, como la Plaza de laIglesia, en donde se encuentranla Iglesia de San IsidroLabrador -con su torre campa-nario de 31 metros de altura-, eledificio del Ayuntamiento y laCasa de los Urrutia, magníficaconstrucción de estilo señorial.
Tampoco debe pasarse por alto elAntiguo Pósito del Trigo -uno de losmejores conservados del reinadode Carlos III en Andalucía y queactualmente alberga el Museo deHistoria Natural-, el AntiguoHospital de la Caridad, la CasaParodys, el Antiguo Casino -hoy endía sede de la Casa de la CulturaIsidro Gómez dedicada al autor del"Pasodoble a Los Barrios"-, laPlaza de Toros La Montera y laPlaza de la Constitución, donde seubican una gran cantidad decomercios, locales de copas y res-taurantes en los que poder degus-tar la sabrosa cocina barreña.
