Classic Porsche Needs a New Home
I have a 1970 911T with a Targa top and matching numbers in Porsche Conda Green available for sale.
This car came to me as someone else’s abandoned “80’s look” project. Previous owners spray painted
the body white, blacked out all the trim, dyed the interior black. In general, made a mess out of a classic
car in attempts to capture the “Miami Vice” look that was so en vogue at the time. So we had the car
taken to a professional paint shop to remove all the dents and repainted to its factory color, which is the
Conda Green.

Weekly Update 28 February 2017

Interior is completely redone with new carpet, seat covers, door cards and other interior bits. The
previous owners had tried at some point to convert the car
to a fuel-injected setup, apparently failed, and then tried
to go back to the stock carbureted setup. So to make sure
this Targa runs the way it should (or better, really), we
replaced the Zenith carburetors (which on their own were
notorious for being tricky to deal with) with Weber carbs,
replaced various other parts (such as the exhaust), and
then had the engine rebuilt and tuned to make sure it was
at its peak. Of course getting power to the ground is just as
important, so we repaired/replaced/refreshed the
suspension, as well as refurbished the wheels and
mounted new tires.

Porsche Events
2-6 March 2017, LitMeet Weekend
The Weekend LA becomes the Center of the Porsche Universe!
For 2017, Stoddard has taken over the LitMeet from Prescott Kelley, Wayne Callaway, and Jim Perrin
who built a little swap meet into one of the world’s most important Classic Porsche events. The website
www.lalitandtoyshow.com has been live for some time. They can be contacted at [email protected].
Saturday, 4 March 2017, Porsche and Vintage VW Literature, Toy/Model, &
Memorabilia Swap Meet
Yes, the full name is a mouthful. The centerpiece of LitMeet weekend will fill the ballrooms at the LAX
Hilton: you need to spring for the “early bird” admission just to have time to see [almost] everything.
Years ago, there was table after table filled with old Porsche literature. You’d find a brochure or
something you wanted then walk around looking to buy it at the best value. The literatures become
rare now and the LitMeet has evolved into something of a trade show where you can meet the folks
you’d normally deal with over the Internet.
Parking
There may be a small discount on parking at the Hilton. The Hilton garage has ceilings too low for
minivans or SUVs and it can fill up early. This is LAX so there’s lots of parking nearby.

356 Registry Members - Meeting with Trustees
356 Registry members can address their questions and concerns to a majority of the board 2:00 PM to
3:15 PM upstairs at the Hilton immediately following the Toy and Lit Show.
Sunday, 5 March 2017, So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display
There’s more of a traditional swap meet at the Phoenix Club as well as lots and lots of nice cars to ogle.
You aren’t shuffling through crowded aisles so it’s easy to meet your Porsche friends. And! The Phoenix
Club has excellent food and German beer.
There are now TWENTY3 Open Houses to choose from (see Related Events):
People will come from all over the world. Nearly every one of those folks will see and be seen at
Willhoit’s on Friday and European Collectibles on Saturday.
Sierra Madre Collection's first Warehouse Open House in 2016 also drew a big crowd—it’s Thursday.
Confusion
There are some inconsistencies between the Related Events page and the Shop Tour page. If there’s a
shop you’d like to visit that doesn’t have hours listed on the Related Events page but is supposed to be
on a Shop Tour, consider confirming with that shop.
Twofers
FRIDAY: Hunziker and Klasse 356 are in the same building, and Callas Rennsport is a couple
blocks North. You can only turn into Callas Rennsport from the northbound side of Hawthorne
Blvd—if parking’s full it can be hard to circle back. Consider parking in the lot South of Callas.
SATURDAY: Jim Liberty & European Collectibles are on opposite sides of the street. California
Porsches4 is in-between and Carparc USA LLC is a short drive (and their open house starts
earlier).
Hot Food
John Willhoit’s Open House
European Collectibles, Inc. 10th Annual “OPEN HOUSE”
Sierra Madre Collection's Warehouse Open House
Auto Kennel’s Open House (pizza)
The Phoenix Club (excellent German fare if the dining room’s open—always good eats in the
courtyard, not to mention German beer)
3 And there are more that aren’t even listed on the Related Events webpage. 4 California Porsches is a small outfit and has never been listed in Related Events, but they figured out about the Porsche traffic.

turns it into cars.
Rocky & Bullwinkle and Adult Beverages
Jim Liberty’s Open House is the only one to have served beer. Tiffany Liberty’s father, Jay Ward,
created Rocky & Bullwinkle and there’s plenty of memorabilia.
5 Porsche only built 25 911Rs and Tony often has two of them at his open house. 6 Jim Liberty is noted for “semi-outlaw” 356s, usually with optically perfect black paint and red leather. His “shop truck” is one of the most original custom VW transporters: a Binz double-cab with a 356 pre-A dashboard and Speedster seats. And yes, it has optically perfect black paint and red upholstery. 7 Benton Performance isn’t listed in Related Events but is a stop for a Friday Bus Tour.

Sunday, 5 March 2017, Pomona Swap Meet
It’s big and it’s at the Pomona Fairplex from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Your chances of finding worthwhile
Porsche parts aren’t so good but there’s lots to look at and all Porsches are eligible for corral parking.
After that, they’ll come on 23 April 2017, 4 June 2017, 13 August 2017, 15 October 2017, and
3 December 2017.
This is the same day as the So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display (page 13) which is a much, much
better event for a Porsche person.

Panamera Turbo S is an e--Hybrid
The most powerful Panamera is a hybrid. It can cover 31 miles in electric-only mode and corner and
accelerate at over one g.
From Porsche Newsroom, 02/24/2017
Premiere in Geneva: Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid
Porsche continues to achieve high levels of performance over the long term. The new Panamera Turbo S
E-Hybrid sees the sportscar manufacturer launch a plug-in hybrid model as the flagship of a model line for
the first time.
The four-litre V8 engine from the Panamera Turbo is combined with an electric motor, resulting in 500
kW/680 hp (Combined fuel consumption 2.9 l/100 km; electric energy consumption 16.2 kWh/100 km;
CO2 emissions 66 g/km) of system power and outstanding power delivery: Even when just above idle
speed, the Panamera Turbo offers an 850 Nm of torque. That means it accelerates from zero to 100
km/h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 310 km/h. The boost strategy of the all-wheel drive
Panamera comes from the 918 Spyder super sportscar. In the New European Driving Cycle, the average
fuel consumption is 2.9 l/100 km, and the new flagship Panamera can drive on fully electric power for up
to 50 kilometres. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid underlines the high importance of electromobility to
Porsche.

Unique drive concept with V8 engine and electric motor
After the successful début of the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, which uses a V6 engine together with an electric
motor, Porsche is showing once again that hybrid technology has great performance potential. The new
Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid combines an electric motor (100 kW/136 hp) with a V8 engine (404 kW/550
hp). The decoupler installed in the Porsche hybrid module is actuated electromechanically by an electric
clutch actuator (ECA), just like in the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. The result is short response times and a high
level of comfort. As in all other second-generation Panamera models, the fast-shifting Porsche
Doppelkupplung (PDK) with eight gears is used to transmit the power to the standard adaptive all-wheel
drive system Porsche Traction Management (PTM).
Panamera model celebrates its world première at the Geneva Motor Show
The E-Performance drive accelerates the luxury saloon to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and provides
extraordinary tractive force at higher speeds.
Combined with a top speed of 310 km/h, this means that the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid sets
yet more new benchmarks in its class. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid comes with air suspension as
standard and offers a unique balance in this segment: the comfort of a luxury saloon paired with
sportscar-level performance values.
Three-way combination: sportscar performance, comfort and efficiency
The electric motor is supplied with power via a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity
of 14.1 kWh. Within six hours, the high-voltage battery integrated in the rear is fully charged with 10 A
via a 230-V connection. If the Panamera uses the optional 7.2-kW on-board charger and a 230-V
connection with 32 A instead of the standard 3.6-kW charger, the battery is fully charged in just 2.4

hours. The charging process can also be started using a timer via Porsche Communication Management
(PCM) or the Porsche Connect app (for smartphones and Apple Watch). Moreover, the Panamera Turbo
S E-Hybrid is fitted with auxiliary air conditioning to cool or heat the passenger compartment even
during charging.
Performance, comfort and efficiency form a perfect three-way combination: The Panamera Turbo S E-
Hybrid starts in the purely electric “E-Power” mode as standard, and the four-door sportscar drives
locally over a distance of up to 50 kilometres with zero emissions. When a specific pressure point is
passed in the accelerator pedal, or when the battery charge level drops below a minimum value, the
Panamera switches to “Hybrid Auto” mode, at which point the power of both engines is available.
Consumption in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) for plug-in hybrid models amounts to 2.9 l/100
km for super-grade petrol (66 g/km of CO2) and 16.2 kW/h/100 km for electric power.
Début with two wheelbases
The new flagship of the second Panamera generation will be launched in the European market in July
2017. Further markets will follow in the second half of 2017. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is
celebrating its world première at the Geneva Motor Show (March 7 to 19, 2017). From the very
beginning, the four-door Gran Turismo will also be offered in an Executive version, with a wheelbase
extended by 150 millimetres.
As part of its standard equipment, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid includes the Porsche Ceramic
Composite Brake (PCCB), Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) including Porsche Torque
Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), Power Steering Plus and 21-inch alloy wheels in the 911 Turbo Design. The
basic package also contains auxiliary air-conditioning, adaptive aerodynamic elements and three-
chamber air suspension including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). The long version is
equipped with rear axle steering as standard.
Consumption data
Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid: Combined fuel consumption 2.9 l/100 km; electric energy
consumption 16.2 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions 66 g/km
Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Executive: Combined fuel consumption 2.9 l/100 km; electric energy
consumption 16.2 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions 66 g/km

Porsche 917 Owners’ Workshop Manual
Book Review by David Churcher, The Northlander, Jan-Feb 2017
Porsche 917 (1969 onwards) Owners’ Workshop Manual
Ian Wagstaff
$24.61 at Amazon
Given the title of this book one would
logically expect lists of torques to apply,
angles to set, and tools needed. But that is
not quite the case in spite of the “workshop
manual” description. The material is not too
technical but does give advice on where to
find genuine Porsche 917 spares, or new
manufactured equivalents, from places like
Dave Griffiths Racing in the UK. There is a
mention of spark plugs ... NGK work well and
cost less than Bosch plugs. If your 917 should
lose its OEM Fichtel and Sachs clutch you can
do what the John Wyer Gulf team did and
replace it with a Borg and Beck. If your 917’s
ATE brakes are not up to your expectations
you can replace them with Girlings ...
Not really a manual with instructions but it is
a not too expensive compilation of 917 facts
and photographs. A worthwhile addition to
any 917 fanatic’s library.
There is a fascinating chapter on the provenance of each car with its original and subsequent chassis
numbers. Explanation is given for the changed numbers, which cars were a real 917 and which were
made from bits found and pooled. And there is a description of the final identification of 917/23 which
had been confused with 917/20 for the years it lived in Japan.
Eight appendices give a great deal of detail for typical specifications, race wins, etc. And there is a huge
bibliography.
If you own a 917 you probably will not use this book as a reference in your garage. But if you wish you
owned a 917 and wanted to learn all about the car then this book is a gem. Cutaway drawings show in
great detail the layout of the flat 12 and the complete car. This book contains all the significant history
of the design, its evolution, the failed parts and the replacement parts, the engineers, the drivers, and
the mechanics. The mechanics include a few paragraphs from Alan Hearn.

Porsche owner looks to make NZ$853,000 in a month
From: www.stuff.co.nz, David McCowen, Last updated 14:27, February 27 2017:
An Australian car enthusiast could be set for an A$800,000 (US$614,352) windfall by selling a rare
Porsche for triple its new price after one month of ownership.
Porsche's Australian operation has expressed its disappointment toward a customer who has listed a
rare 2016 911 R coupe for sale at A$1.2 million (NZ$1.28m), with only 68 kilometres on the odometer.
The car's Australian retail price is A$404,700 plus on-road costs.
The advertisement says the car arrived in Australia in January 2017, spending little time with the original
owner before heading off to sale.
