excessive deflection or movement of the support system.

Ddving and shoring a horizontal drift is more of an art than a science. If the standing time of anexcavation is greater than the time required to place the permanent support, shoring is notrequired. The following is standard practice in the mining and tunneling industry.

Place the tunnel lagging support frames in one tunnel. Open a four foot wide window adiacentto the crosspassage.

The following calculations show that the ribs and posts have more than adequate capadty tosupport the design loads. Calculation sheet 13 of 16 shows that the design load thrust in thearch rib is 71.1 kips. The horizontal thrust at the top of the post is 71.1 x Tan 40.3 - 7.4 = 52.9kips. This thrust is supported by hard wood blocking at the intersection of the arch rib and post.The vertical load to the post is 71.1 x Cos 49.7 = 46 kips. This load is supported by a l’-g"square x 6" concrete, fc’ = 4,000 psi footing block reinforced with 4 - #-4 Bottom each way.

The upper portion of the drift is mined to a distance of four feet. An arch fib and the upperportion of the post and a intermediate strut is placed. Before driving the upper portion of thedrift another four feet, the roof and walls shall be shotcreted between adiacent ribs and posts toa minimum thickness of 3.5 inches. The shotcrete shall be reinforced with 6x6 / W6xW6 VWVFwith 3/4 " minimum coverage. Drive heading to within four feet of the opposing tunnel.

From the odginal starting point, excavate the lower half of the drift for a distance of four feet.Place a wall beam if required to support the upper section of the post.the lower section of the post and the lower strut. Place shotcrete and Place the footing block,

6x6 / W6xW6 WWFbefore driving the drift an additional four feet. Continue the process until the drift is within fourfeet of the opposing tunnel.

Place the tunnel lagging support frames in the opposing tunnel. Open a four foot wide windowadjacent to the crosspassage. Complete,the excavation of the crosspassage. Place the HDPEliner.

Place the base slab of the crosspassage. After the base slab has gained strength, remove theupper strut and complete placement of the crosspassage.
