Notes for Jason Myers:BETHEL CHRISTIAN UNION CHURCHThis congregation was probably organized through the efforts of Rev. Abbott, from Indianapolis, about the time of the Civil War, or a little later. A neat frame church was built at the northeast corner of the southeast quarter of section 27, township 16, range 7. It took its name from the Bethel school house which then stood about thirty rods north of the church. No records of the church have been found, but among the families who worshipped there, whether they were members or not, were William Fries andfamily, A. C. handy and family, James P. Galbreath and family, J. Foster and family, Jason Myers and family,----Johnson and family. A. C. Handy preached many sermons in this church and James P. Galbreath was a very active member. The families became scattered and services were discontinued during the latter seventies or early eighties.

  • (2) the preacherWilliam Latta McCalla (1788-1859) was famous for his preaching in Brown County, Ohio andBracken County, Kentucky. There is an entire book of his sermons.

    (3) the teacher (the one you are after)William L. McCalla (ca 1796 Maryland-after 1870 Pleasant Township, Switzerland County,Indiana) had a half brother, Henry K. McCalla, who had one of those obituaries that are alwayswished for but rarely found.

[An * appears after each sentence that has information from Henry's obituary.] In May 1811Henry's parents [William's father and step mother] moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky.* In 1816they moved from Kentucky to Ohio.* In 1820 William was on the Huntington Township, BrownCounty, Ohio census. He was on the 1821, 1822, and 1823 Bracken County, Kentucky tax lists. On1 April 1825 William married Delia Neill (ca 1805 Kentucky-?) in Adams County, Ohio, but he wasnot on any of the Adams County tax lists from 1816 through 1826. William was on the 1825, 1826,and 1827 Huntington Township, Brown County tax lists. Then William was on the 1828, 1829,1830, 1831, [1832 was lost] 1833, 1834, and 1835 Mason County, Kentucky tax lists. On 2October William was of Mason County when he bought land in Maysville, Mason County. On 17April 1830 he and Delia of Maysville sold their land there. On 13 January 1831 he witnessed Joshuaand Mary McCalla's [his brother] deed for 5 acres on Fishing Gut Creek in Huntington Township. On 6 April 1831 William was of Maysville when he mortgaged a great deal of store merchandize. On 4 April 1833 his store in Maysville burned along with much of the town. In 1840 William was inLiberty Township, Adams County, Ohio. On 23 April 1845 William's father, John McCalla (ca1769 Maryland-23 April 1845 Aberdeen, Brown County, Ohio), died. On 25 December 1848 inManchester, Adams County W. L. McCalla gave his daughter, Magdalena N. McCalla, permissionto marry John Haslet McHenry. They were married in Adams County on 1 January 1849. In 1850William and Delia were in Sprigg Township, Adams County. He was a teacher. He became affiliatedwith Manchester Lodge, #317, of the Free and Accepted Masons in Adams County in 1858 andapparently demitted on 7 November 1859. In 1860 William and Delia were in Cotton Township,Switzerland County, Indiana. He was teaching. By 1870 they had moved to Pleasant Township,Switzerland County, Indiana. He was still teaching. His daughter and son-in-law were living nextdoor. I do not know what happened to William and Delia after 1870. William could have had a

    Hi Janine,

There were at least 3 men called William L. McCalla:

  • (1) my ancestorWilliam L. McCalla (14 March 1825 Brown County, Ohio-25 February 1893 Tazewell County,Illinois) married Elizabeth Jane Turney (23 March 1830 Ohio-12 August 1913 Tazewell County,Illinois) in Brown County, Ohio on 20 October 1848.

    (2) the preacherWilliam Latta McCalla (1788-1859) was famous for his preaching in Brown County, Ohio andBracken County, Kentucky.

In 1850William and Delia were in Sprigg Township, Adams County. He was a teacher. He became affiliatedwith Manchester Lodge, #317, of the Free and Accepted Masons in Adams County in 1858 andapparently demitted on 7 November 1859. In 1860 William and Delia were in Cotton Township,

Township,Switzerland County, Indiana. He was teaching. By 1870 they had moved to Pleasant Township,Switzerland County, Indiana. He was still teaching. His daughter and son-in-law were living nextdoor. I do not know what happened to William and Delia after 1870. William could have had awonderfully helpful obituary too, but I do not know where he died. He was famous and well liked asa teacher.

William and Delia had at leasted two more children: a boy born between 1826 and 1830 and a girlalso born between 1826 and 1830. What became of them? The two children were on the 1840census, but they were not necessarly McCallas. They could have been boarders.

The McCalla family is very confusing - too many Johns, William L.s, and Joshuas. I have more than200 pages on them and it is all on WordPerfect 3.something. Rekeying it on Word is daunting, butnecessary if it is to be printed. I need to quit stalling and get to it.

    i. Samuel Mears was born 1795 in Pennsylvania or Ky.

ii. William Mears was born 25 Aug 1799 in Kentucky, died 01 Oct 1873 in Butler or Black Hawk, Iowa, married Sally Newell 11 Mar 1819 in Brown Co. OH.

Notes for William Mears:WESLEY MEARS came to Black Hawk County, Iowa, in November, 1854, and first settled in Waterloo, where he lived till 1867, when he removed to the farm on section 13, this township, which is still owned by his family, his farm containing sixty acres of good land. Mr. Mears was born September 5, 1838, a son of William and Sarah (Newell) Mears, the father born in Pennsylvania, August 25, 1799, and the mother a native of Brown County, Ohio, born March 3, 1804. William Mears was reared in Bourbon County, Kentucky, where his parents settled when he was quite young. He began learning the blacksmith's trade of his brother Samuel, but not liking the trade he abandoned it and went to Brown County, Ohio, where he bound himself out to a hatter till he was twenty-one, but did not serve his entire apprenticeship. He subsequently engaged in farming, remaining in Brown County till 1830, when he moved with his family to Warren County, Indiana, and there entered eighty acres of Government land, where he lived several years, coming to Waterloo, this county, in 1854, and bought eighty acres of land where the Illinois Central depot now stands. William Mears built a saw-mill above the Union Mills, which he afterward converted into a grist-mill, where he carried on a profitable trade. After selling his mill he engaged in farming, and in 1867 he exchanged his farm in Waterloo for his place in this township, occupied by his family. He was married March 11, 1819, to Sarah Newell, daughter of William and Martha (Hall) Newell, and to them were born the following children Ephraim, Mahala, Caroline, Wesley (our subject), R. Alien, living, and William, George, Eveline, Miranda and Gary, deceased. William and George served in the late war, the former dying in hospital while returning from the army. George died in 1873. Both father and mother were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. The father served as supervisor while living in Waterloo. Wesley Mears, whose name heads this sketch, was married July 7, 1867, to Mary Collins, a native of Portsmouth, England, born in February, 1846, and to this union has been born one childElla Gertrude, born April 8, 1872. Mrs. Mears lost her father at the age of six months, and her mother married again. She was reared from infancy by a maternal uncle, with whom she came to New York at the age of twelve years, living there till she was twenty-three years of age, and married in Waterloo. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iabiog/blackhawk/hb1886/hb1886-m.htm

Okay, now I am beginning to think we are dealing with separate but related Mears families. David Mears was certainly in Ohio by 1806. I found a deed for 200 acres he purchased in 1810 today. He is also on tax lists in Ohio prior to 1810. If "reared in Bourbon County" equates with 6 or 7 years of life, then we still have the same family. If not, as this article sounds, we are dealing with separate but related families in that we have David Mears and Elizabeth's children and William and Samuel Mears.

Notes for James Mears:HUNTINGTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHSome years previous to 1832, Rev. Rutter, Robert Rankin, Rev. James Gilliland and sometimes Rev. John Rankin, met in private houses and schoolhouses, and a church was organized. The following persons were members: William Anderson and wife, Joseph Daniels and wife, Robert Scott and wife, David Dunseth, Thomas Gibson and wife and James Mears. In 1832, a brick house was erected on the opposite side of the creek and near where Hiett's Post Office now stands. The church stood for years, but about 1850 the brick walls became cracked and much damaged, so that it was unsafe, and it was taken down and rebuilt on a smaller scale on the same site. The church member became much reduced in the course of a few years by the death of some and the removal of others. Services have not been kept up regularly, and consequently the church has become week both numerically and otherwise.

    42. William Van Fleet was born about 1755. He died in 1843. He was the son of 84. Father /Van Fleet Vliet. He married Kniertje Vlerebome.

Notes for William Van Fleet:[165]. VAN VLIET.--"Information is desired of the Van Vliet family, the Van in many instances having been dropped. The record of an old family Bible (1839) says: 'Two brothers, Daniel and William Van Vliet, emigrated to America from Holland some twenty years before 1750; lived near New Brunswick, N. J. Daniel Vliet bought 16 acres near Six-Mile Run; afterwards, retaining this land, bought a farm in the wilderness of the Musconetcong river in N. J., about ten miles from Easton, Pa. He raised a family of seven sons and one daughter: John, David, Daniel, Margaret, Jesper, William, Garret and Abram. The five sons served as soldiers in the Revolutionary War.' From the Pension Department inWashington the names of Daniel and David appear as applying for a pension in 1833, and in the remarks at the bottom is the statement that his father and five brothers served as Revolutionary soldiers; also that Daniel, Sr., was Capt. in Col. Thompson's Regiment. Jesper married Polly Black of Philadelphia; their children were Abram, Garret (b. 1790), Acsah, John, Jesper, Ketura. The lastnamed Garret, my grandfather, went to Milwaukee in 1835 and was a surveyor in the employ of the Government."

    M. V. N. (Kansas City, Kan.).

[We confess to have spent considerable time in puzzling over the ancestry of theabove-named Daniel and William Vliet, and take much interest in the subject. We had supposed the Vliet families of Somerset to have been well worked outby the late Judge Ralph Voorhees, a descendant, and that publications byhimself and others, including Chambers, would at least assist in solving ourcorrespondent's problem. It seems that the Daniel Vliet referred to was a Captain in the Revolution, having also five of his sons in the service. This makes almost as unique a record in this respect as that of the family of Rev. JamesMcCrea, as noted on another page; and as the line of Daniel, begun in Somerset, developed into a number of the best known families in Hunterdon and present Warren (formerly Sussex) county, we have greatly desired to ascertain to a certainty Daniel's ancestry.

At the outset we may say that the record of 1839 in the "old family Bible" we believe to be incorrect, so far as the statement goes that "Daniel and William Van Vliet emigrated to America from Holland some twenty years before 1750."

    Page 30 of 205 Saturday, April 28, 2012 8:48:37 PM

  • Van Vliet emigrated to America from Holland some twenty years before 1750." We believe both were born near Six-Mile Run and New Brunswick, and descended from one of the two immigrants of that general family name; either from Adrian Gerritsen Van Vliet (or Van Vleet), who came from Utrecht,Holland, to New Amsterdam on the ship "Trouw," June 13, 1662, with his wife Agatha Jans Spruyt and five children, and whose sons were Gerrit, Jan and Dirck, or from Dirck Jansen Van der Vliet, who came from the Waal, Holland, in 1660, and settled in Flatbush. So far as we have known of the Somerset county Vliets they were descended from Dirck Jansen, whose sons were Gerrit, Jan and Hendrick. Gerrit appears to have located near Readington, and Jan (Judge Voorhees gives it as Jan's son Jan) settled near Six-Mile Run in or before 1717. This line does not seem to give any probable parent of Daniel and William. The writer, however, has discovered, from searching in the wills filed at Trenton, that a Margaret "Vleet" was the mother of both William and Daniel. Her will of Aug. 9, 1742, probat. Nov. 5, 1742 (Trenton Wills, Book D, p. 13), states she is a widow of New Brunswick, and gives her children as John, Francis, Mary, Ann, William and Daniel, the last two being under age. A codicil of the same date expresses the desire that her sons Daniel and William shall "keep house together." The husband of this Margaret, therefore, if known, would probably indicate clearly to which of the two Holland lines William and Daniel belonged. This, however, no search has yet revealed.

Of William Vliet, the son, we think he went from near Six-Mile Run to near Readington and m. Adriaentje Wyckoff, but are not certain that the ReadingtonWilliam is the same man. In any event he is to be distinguished from the William Van Fleet, of Readington, who m. Mary Middagh Aten.

As to Daniel, whose line thenceforward is traceable, and whose birth is stated to have been in 1726, it is certain he was a farmer near Six-Mile Run, having a small (16-acre) place; that he m. Charity Blackwell; that some, if not all of his children, were born there; that, at some time after 1752, he removed to near Bloomsbury in Hunterdon co., purchasing a much larger farm, and is buried there in a private cemetery. The pension papers of his fourth son, Daniel, Jr., give Six-Mile Run as the place of Daniel, Jr.'s birth; also stating that Daniel, Sr., was a Captain in 1777, and that Daniel, Jr., was in his father's Company. Captain Daniel d. in 1810, leaving a will, which shows his sons to have beenGarret, John, David, Daniel, Jasper and William, and that he had a daughterMargaret. This Margaret, by the way, was the well known "Peggy Warne," thewife of Joseph Warne. After her a Chapter of the D. A. R., now existing in Warren co., was named. Of the sons of the first Daniel we have learned the following:

The first son, Garret, b. at Six-Mile Run about 1745, served in the Revolution, and afterward became known as General Garret Vliet. He was a Major-General of militia and performed escort duty at Trenton when General Lafayette visitedthat city in 1825. He m. Lydia Eckman, settled near Danville, Warren co., and was a prominent county official for many years, as well as Member of the Legislature in 1828 and '29. His son, Daniel, who m. Barbara Woolever, was the father of the late Hon. Joseph Vliet, Prosecutor of the Pleas and afterward Judge of Warren co. His son, Daniel, Jr., was long an honored member of the Bar of that county. A sister to this Daniel, Jr., now resides at Washington, N. J., and is the wife of Rev. E. B. England, D. D., and Regent of the Peggy Warne Chapter, D. A. R. The second son, John, b. at Six-Mile Run about 1747, also served in the Revolution. The third son, David, b. 1749, also served in the War, and was living in 1833, when eighty-four years of age. The fourth son, Daniel, b. July 9, 1752, at Six-Mile Run, served, according to his pension papers of 1833, eight and one-half months in the Revolution, during the years 1776-'78. In 1777 he served in the Company of his father, who was Captain of the Company. He resided, in 1833, in Independence twsp., Warren co., and d. in 1841. The fifth son, Jasper ("Jesper" on some records), m. "Polly" Black, of Philadelphia. He also was a Revolutionary soldier. His sons

Garret moved to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., served in the War of 1812-'15, became a surveyor, prospecting as far west as St. Louis, resided for some years near Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was an engineer in the construction of the Miami canal, and finally, 1837, settled n Milwaukee. Our corespondent, who makes the inquiry above printed, is the daughter of Garret's son William.--EDITOR QUARTERLY]. ========================================================The Early Settlers of Somerset County NJ

It is not certain the place of residence of each of these families. The Sebrings and Harris's live in the vicinity of Bound Brook.Pieter Dumont on the South side of the Raritan, Powelsons near Pluckamin. All of them evidently did not remain permenently, nor did all of them leave descendents. The names of others continue to occur in the records for many years. Most of them areknown to have immigrated to Somerset from Long Island, and among them there are several names which indicate a huguenotorigin. Somerset County has had a large infusion of the Huguenot group.

Janine,Don't have much on the Calshet name. I do seea couple small references besides what is inSomerset Co. Hist Quarterly, where you probablysaw the info you gave me on Anna and Phillip,There was a Peter Calsha, which is probably thesame family. Peter is listed in the Bedminster Twp.tax ratable for 1785. He had 142 acres of ground, 5 horses, 8 cattle, and 1 slave. Doesn't list the numberof people in his household. Peter is also listed in the reconstructed census for Somerset county in1790. They have his name listed as Calsha / Caulshen.Wish I could be of more help.Steve McEowen

    46. John Updike was born in 1758 in Somerset Co. NJ. He died in 1815 in Seneca Co., NY. He was the son of 92. John Updike Sr. and 93. Mary Bragaw. He married Mary Smith.

Notes for John Updike:# ID: I00511# Name: John Updike , Jr.# Sex: M# Birth: 1743 in NJ# Birth: ABT 1758 in NJ# Death: 19 OCT 1819 in NY# PROP: 5 FEB 1805 Sale to David Johnson# Burial: UNKNOWN Old Log Meeting House Cemetery, Trumansburg, NY# Note:

The Op Dyck genealogy says that John died in 1815 in Seneca Co., NY. Tompkins Co. was formed in 1817 from Seneca Co., so the records that Charles Opdyke examined all mentioned Seneca Co. I believe that he is listed in the Old Log Meeting House cemtery as: UPDIKE, John d. Oct. 19, 1819 in his 78th yr. There is no reference to his wife. It seems likely that his son Jeremiah who moved to Hector, Tompkins Co. in 1821, came to take over his father's estate. This puts his birth much earlier than the Op Dyck genealogy says, but makes his first marriage to Gertrude more understandable as she is likely to have been born much earlier than 1760 (who had a child in 1767 and her sister's husband was supposedly born in 1733).

  • From the deed dated 2/5/1805 from John Updike to David Johnson, "... and the said John Opdike by his marriage to Mary Smith one of the before mentioned daughters" shows that Mary Smith was the daughter, not granddaughter of Jeremiah Smith. His residence was stated as Seneca Co., NY, but Tompkins Co. was formed in 1817 from Seneca Co., so he could well have lived in what is now Tompkins Co.

Owing to his migration to Seneca County, and death there in 1815, he is not clearly remembered by the Updikes of Tompkins County, N. Y., nor by those of New Jersey. Of his own grandchildren there has been found only one now living, and her memory is impaired by age. The following extracts from correspondence and records are however conclusive as to his place in the family tree.

Mrs. Mary Wilson, of Kewanee, Illinois, writes that she lived with her father Jeremiah near Princeton, N. J., until she was seven years old, (which was in 1821); that her father used to carry her across Stony Brook to the house of her aunt Charity (Dumont); that there lived close by Stony Brook a William Updike whom her father always spoke of as "Uncle," and whom she has always understood to have been her grandfather's brother; that her grandfather lived somewhere in New York State, but she never lived near him and does not remember his name; that she has heard her father say that his father removed to New York State when the Indians were thick there; that she was a baby when her grandfather died (1815); that her father Jeremiah removed from New Jersey to Tompkins County, N. Y., with his family in 1821.

Charles J. Updike, of Centreburg, Ohio, says that his grandfather Jeremiah was born and married in Montgomery township, near Princeton, N. J.; moved in 1821 to Hector, Tompkins County, N. Y., and in 1839 to Knox County, Ohio; and has told him that he was distantly related to some grandchildren of William Updike of Stony Brook near Princeton.

William Updike's grandchildren, referred to, lived formerly in Ohio near Jeremiah; they write that they frequently talked with Jeremiah about their, relationship, and they think that their grandfather William and Jere- miah's father were brothers.

A granddaughter of Peter Updike, in Hopewell, N. J., remembers going; when a child to the Cedar Grove school-house with the children of Jeremiah; Updike who lived near by, and who afterward
