Students will need to arrive at GPS by 9am and will walk to West End Oval for a 9:30am start. Please ensure students pack a school hat, some snacks and a water bottle on the day. A free sausage sandwich lunch will be provided for each child.

Stage Two Excursion The stage 2 excursion to Beechworth is week 8, Thursday 30th November to 1st December. We are asking that payment be made in full by week 5, Friday 10th November. If students have not paid in full by this time, they may lose their place on the excursion. There will be no refunds for students who cannot make full payment by this date. Thank you.

Stage 3 Excursion By now, the full cost of $330 for the excursion should have been finalised. If not, please pay any remaining money owing ASAP as it must be paid in full before the excursion in Week 5 this term. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Mrs Lemon ASAP to discuss.

Medical notes were sent home last week and will need to be returned by the end of Week 2. Once all medical notes are received a list of what to pack and a copy of the itinerary will be handed out to students.

A reminder that, as per our discipline policy, any students on a level 2 weeks prior to the start of the excursion may jeopardise their ability to attend. While on excursion, students are expected to continue to display GPS values of respect, responsibility and do your best at all times and that school consequences still apply. Aboriginal Hearing and Eye Sight Testing

A free hearing and eye screening is being offered to all Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander students from the 25th - 27th October. Notes have been sent home and are due back to Nicole or Mrs Lemon by this Friday.

Naming the new Griffith Secondary Education Provision The choice of a name for the new school is important and must follow the Department of Education’s Naming of Government Schools Procedures. The full procedures are available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library/policies/naming-of-nsw-government-schools?refid=285776. In summary, the procedures emphasise the importance of a school’s name. In the first instance the guidelines recommend that wherever possible a school should adopt the name of the suburb, town or locality in which it is situated. Where it is not possible to use the locality name, or where the locality name is regarded as unsuitable, a number of alternatives could be considered. The alternatives may be:

Local people, such as pioneering men and

women or families, Victoria Cross winners,

scientists, artists, explorers and community

leaders

Aboriginal local place names or words

Famous Australians

Community consultation is a critical component of the selection of a suitable school name. We are conducting a competition to select possible names suitable for the new school. A shortlisting process will be undertaken after the competition closes on Friday, 17 November, 2017. Following the shortlisting the final three possibilities will be publicised for public discussion. A final panel consisting of Griffith Secondary Education Advisory Council, student, parent, community, school and Department of Education representatives will make a recommendation to the Executive Director, School Performance, Wagga Wagga regarding the proposed name. The Executive Director will conduct the necessary checks to ensure the name is not in use elsewhere and meets the criteria for a government school name. Following this the Executive Director will seek approval of the new school name from the Minister of Education. Following the confirmation of the school name, consultation will take place around badging and motto. Throughout these processes, the history and traditions of Wade and Griffith High Schools will be respected.

What shall we name the new Griffith Secondary Education Provision? Suggested Name: Please provide reasons for your suggestion (maximum 150 words): Please email your submission to Maree Angus, Director Griffith Secondary Education Strategy ([email protected]) by COB Friday, 27 October, 2017
