Reminder
- Phil Merkel –
Now that we're all
recovered from a great
contest weekend, it's time to think about our next performance. It has been on the calendar for quite a while now, and it will be
our third appearance in Potomac Green. The Social Committee has been busy advertising
and selling tickets, and they expect over 100 attendees.
Reserve the date, June 14th which is a Sunday afternoon. The chapter will have to help set up the chairs in the ballroom starting
around 1:00 PM. The performance is planned for 3:00 PM. We will also provide light
refreshments of the punch and cookie variety for a social following. Cis Merkel and Nancy Richardson will be our community contacts
for that with details to follow.
We need all possible chapter quartets to augment the performance. It will be quite
similar to the Wardensville performance. So save your western gear and get ready to
sing.

Help at Potomac Green
- Sue Jones –
Ladies, we've been asked if we can help out
our guys for their performance at Potomac Green on June 14th.
Please let me know if
you would be willing to provide a couple dozen cookies or other pick-up
(no forks necessary) dessert items. It would be nice if we could do homemade, but I know
sometimes that's just not possible. I'm sorry to say that all the slots for brownies were filled before the request came to me!! Also,
we're requested to place the cookies/desserts on disposable serving plates so there's no
problem with making sure the right plates get back to the right ladies.
As always, thanks so much for your continued support for our guys and their
hobby!! Thanx, Sue
Gentlemen,
The scores from the combined Northern/Western Division competitions have
been posted on the M-AD website. Seven ND
choruses scored above 64.8 (our score), as did six WD choruses. When combined
with the Atlantic and Southern Division results, that means that 24
choruses scored higher than we did. If they follow the announced plan to invite 20-22
choruses to Ocean City, they will not invite the Jubil-Aires.
While I am disappointed that we did not score high enough to qualify, I tend to agree
with previously expressed views that it is not an unmitigated harm. It will allow us to focus on learning the new set of songs for our R&R
show, and preparing some of them for next year's Division contest, without the
distraction of taking a month or two to polish Little Patch (or trying to learn and polish new songs for competition on a rush basis). I'd
like to continue to sing (and choreo) Little Patch, but without the competitive pressure,
and while learning a bunch of cool new songs. I'm also inclined against trying to push our
way into District as "mike testers," at least as
a chorus. Even as mike testers we would feel the need to polish a performing package,
distracting us from learning and enjoying the new show package. (I do, however, support
Cliff's suggestion of inviting members of non-competing choruses to form a pick-up chorus to act as mike-testers. Such a pick-up chorus
could include those Jubil-Aires who want to participate.) Personally, I don't plan to go.
It's a long ride and a long weekend, and I think it would be a downer to sit in the audience and watch the enthusiasm of the
other, competing choruses. Maybe I'm getting jaded (since this would be my 15th
convention), but I'd rather spend the weekend listening to (and trying to sing) Beach Boys music.

We had 6 guests from last rehearsal! They
are (left to right, skipping Steve and
Richard): Mark, Jim, Pierre Bouscaren (former Jubil-Aire!), Matt, Josh and Dell
Ewing. We hope they come again! They all stayed for the full rehearsal and
sang with us. Fred says: “I think it was a
well-planned and, hopefully, very successful guest night.”
The first quartet (Phil, Steve, Bob and Cliff)
sang "My Wild Irish Rose" and proved that four guys that have never sung together can still put out a great sound.
The second quartet (Phil, Richard, Sam, and Cliff) sang "I Want a Girl" and proved that a good quartet can sound good even
when they (all) sing in the wrong key (a full note low). Fred says: “Personally, I was
droolling at the chance to sing the bari part a full note lower!” Roger says: “Don't blame me guys. I blew the B flat.”
Our latest member,
Robert Winer, gave a talk about what it means to be a new
member of the Jubil-Aires. He spoke from
his recent experiences.
