We very much regret that the industrial situation and the world paper shortage are compelling us to produce issues of MT with less than the usual number of pages, and apologize to readers and to the many advertisers for whose announcements we have been unable to find space.

underwent this painful operation solely on my advice; indeed I do not doubt that he consulted several other critical practitioners for their opinions before coming to the decision, and rightly so.

LORD BERNERS May I beg the courtesy of your columns to ask readers if they have reminiscences, letters etc which could be of help to me in the biography of Lord Berners I am writing ? Any material sent will be duly acknowledged and treated with care before returning it.

So little of this composer's career is as yet re- corded in print that it is hoped that this biography will be as comprehensive as possible.

ERKEL I am gathering material about the Hungarian Composer, Ferenc Erkel (1810-93), and am inter- ested in locating any letters and manuscripts of Erkel in private collections. I also wish to buy copies of his operas Hunyadi Ldszld and Bdnk bin which were published in piano score by R6zsavilgyi of Budapest before the end of the last century.

I should be grateful for any help your readers may be able to give.
