Executive Summary

This portfolio is about Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books, an institute that provides

translation services and publication of translated book in Malaysia. This is in line with

Malaysian Vision 2020 mission (ITBM, 2014). This study is based upon various secondary

sources which touch on the historical background of the organization, its main functions, and

objectives. This portfolio also is enclosed with appendices on the job vacancy by the

organization, followed by the writer’s cover letter and resume.

Introduction

This portfolio investigate’s and report’s about the functions of an institute that involves the

translation industry. I am interested in this organization because based on the information that

was gained it would be beneficial for my future job application. Furthermore, this portfolio is

to fulfil the requirement in Language for Occupational Purposes taught by Mr. Shamsul

Anuar, lecturer of International Islamic University. It is interesting to know more deeply

about this organization since it is very useful for my job interview as I am a graduating

student on this semester.

This portfolio is about Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books. The institute is

known for translated books and documents. It is also formerly known as Malaysian National

Institute of Translation and was established on 14th September 1993 before it changes its

name to Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books in 16th December 2011 (ITBM 2014).

The aim of this study is to investigate the background of the organization, its main

functions, and objectives. This is to expose the historical background of the organization as

how well its function in Malaysian industry in achieving its objectives.

Methodology

The method that was used in gaining data on the institution was by obtaining information

from secondary sources which are mainly internet-based. A qualitative research design was

used, and the data was collected and analyzed.

Findings

The result from the investigation will show the historical background of the organization, its

main functions, and objectives. The discussion is made in order to give clear details and

understanding on the organization.

Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books, formerly known as Malaysia National Institute

of Translation was established on 14th September 1993. The company is owned by Ministry

of Finance and administered by Ministry of Education. On 16 December 2011, with the

mandate from Prime Minister Malaysia National Institute of Translation has changed its

name into Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books. In line with country’s Vision 2020,

Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM) provides translation service and

publication of translated books in Malaysia and it is located at Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur

(ITBM, 2014).

According to (ITBM, 2014) their philosophy is:

An organisation providing translation services for books, documents, information,

software and other literature from various languages into Malay and also other

languages.

An interpreting centre for local and international clients.

A professional development centre promoting the method, technique and art of

translation, interpreting and information exchange in various languages.

A human resource development centre training and enhancing the skills of translators,

editors, interpreters and other language professionals to fulfil the country’s needs at

national and international levels.

A reference centre establishing standards and quality assurance for translation,

interpreting and information exchange in Malaysia.

The organization has been divided into 5 departments under the managing director (ITBM,

2014). However, there is currently no position in one of the departments which is the

Corporate Department that consist of 4 divisions.

Main Functions

The organization performs two main activities in the field of publishing in Malaysia

which is the publication of the translation and publication of original works of Malaysian

writers. Two activities are carried out starting from processing the obtained manuscript until

it was published into the hands of readers. Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books

receives the best work from foreign writers in the world which need to be translated into

national language by participating in the various international book fair. In the event, the

organization also implements marketing strategies in promoting the works of the nationals for

international readers. However, it is by creating partnership between various international

agencies (Lettres De Malaisie, 2013).

The organization has provided with six types of services which are translating,

interpreting, editing, training, subtitling, and support services (ITBM, 2014). However, every

service has its own rates and terms and conditions.

For the year 2014, the organization is planning to publish more Malaysian writers

work in France as it will be translated into French language and vice versa. The work has

been discussed between the organization and publisher from France. There are a total of 6

works as follows (Lettres De Malaisie, 2013):

Objectives

Here is the organization’s objectives stated by (ITBM, 2014):

1. To enhance translation services in multiple languages.

2. To increase the translation and publication of quality informative materials in Malay.

3. To intensify efforts to translate and publish prominent local works in other languages.

4. To provide a platform for local writers to produce original works of varied genres.

5. To strengthen interpreting services at the national and international levels.

6. To expand promotion and marketing of ITBM’s services and products within the

country and worldwide.

7. To produce outstanding and highly skilled human capital through courses and training

in translation, writing and editing.

8. To strengthen capability, capacity and governance of the organisation to provide

ITBM services and products.

9. To support all endeavours of the government and interested parties in translation and

book publishing.

10. To enhance and optimise the use of facilities to promote the sustainability of the

translation and book publishing industries.

11. To improve the capability of part-time translators, editors and interpreters and their

management.

In order to achieve its objectives, the organization has set its mission and vision. One

of the missions is to overcome barriers in the dissemination of knowledge through quality

translation for a developed society consistent with Vision 2020. Next is to enrich the

knowledge source in Malay relating to the thinking of Malaysians in regards of culture,

translation by science and technology and book publishing. Another is to internationalize the

national works continuously by translating and book publishing to be at par with another

works done that recognized worldwide. Lastly, it is to have human development in the

translation and book publishing industries (ITBM, 2014).

The vision of Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books is to be the leading

translation organization and publisher of quality books (ITBM, 2014).

Conclusion

Since its establishment, Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books has been in

service for 21 years in the translation industry. The organization has provided excellent

translation service to its customer’s not just locally but also worldwide. Various translations

can be done in this organization as it has a very competitive and professional work force in

translating local language into other foreign language and vice versa. In order to achieve the

organization’s aim, the organization will continue to provide the best translation service to its

customers and pursue in achieving recognition as the best translation organization globally.

Appendix 1

Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books, formerly known as Malaysia National Institute of Translation was established on 14th September 1993. The company is owned by Ministry of Finance and administered by Ministry of Education. Executive of Management and Human Resource Division

Main objective is to manage and supervising matters related to the management and development of human resources in order to improve the unit’s performance in line with the organization objectives.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Candidate must at least possess a Post Graduate Diploma or Bachelor Degree in any field.

Must possess at least basic in Microsoft Office.

Proficiency in English and Malay. Chinese would add as advantage.

Ability to work under pressure.

No experiences required as training would be provided.

Fresh Graduates are encouraged to apply.

Salary: RM2000 – RM2500 depends on relevant working experience.
