SCIENCE PRESENTATION EVENING
Our Science presentation evening is coming along
very quickly. We are looking forward to sharing the
research information about Australian animals and
the diorama, which is a product, showing learning
and understanding. Putting a positive spin on your
questions when you see the research and diorama
will help your child see that you value their efforts.
BOOK WEEK
As part of the Book
Week celebrations,
students were
encouraged to dress up
as their favourite book
character or “Aussie”
dress. There were many
wonderful costumes!
Thank you to all students who participated with our
dress up day.
MT WORTH CLUSTER CAMP
Information regarding the Mt Worth Cluster Camp
has been sent home with all students in Yr 3 & 4. All
forms with final payment are due at the office by
the end of this term.
FUNDRAISING
The Fathers Day/ Special Persons Stall will be held
TOMORROW, Friday 2nd September. Thank you to
our Parents & Friends Group who have coordinated
this event.
WARRAGUL REGIONAL TRANSISTION DAY
Students attending Warragul Regional College in
2017 will be participating in a Transition Day on
Wednesday 7th September. Permission forms were
attached to the newsletter last week and must be
brought back to school by Monday 29th August.
SCHOOL DISCO
As you will see from a section of this newsletter we
have our school disco coming up very quickly on
Thursday, 15th September, from 6.30pm – 8.30pm at
the Darnum Hall. Children of all ages are welcome if
they are either enrolments for next year, current
students or ex Nilma PS students. If a child attends
who is an ex-Nilma PS student, it is expected that
they will be supervised by their own parent/s who
will remain at the hall. Staff will provide supervision
of current Nilma PS students only. It is also a non-
alcohol event.
We would like this to be a family friendly event. So come along and dance your heart out, whatever age you are !!! Please return the permission form for this event by next Friday 9th September, so that we can estimate
how many will attend for catering purposes. We understand that this
will be a significant change
from the previous one
which was held in Term 4.
At our most recent school
council meeting the
decision was made to have
it this term so that a
number of factors would
make the night a really good one. These being :
Daylight savings will not have started and
this allows children to play with their glow
sticks in the dark earlier.
The venue (Darnum Hall) is secure and safe
relative to cars travelling by the venue.
The venue has good kitchen facilities for
food preparation.
The reason I have listed the factors behind the
decision is to emphasize that we try, wherever
possible, to make decisions which will benefit all of
us and sometimes these have to be taken relatively
quickly. Thank you for your understanding of this
and other matters and we hope to see you at the
disco.

HOMEGROUP HAPPENINGS!
Book Week
The students all did an amazing job
participating in our Book Week activities.
These ranged from listening to and
discussing short-listed books, getting
dressed up, attempting to solve the Book
Week Staff Quiz, and completing activities
based on short-listed books read by a Year
6 leader.
Responsible Pet Ownership
On Monday we had a visit from Responsible Pet Ownership. Students listened and learned about how to
approach a safe dog and what to do in the situation of an unsafe dog.
Students learned about interacting with different pets and when to give them space and how to pet (pat) them appropriately.

Many young people grow up experiencing an imbalance of rewards for good behaviour versus punishments for bad behaviour. They have wrongly learnt that motivation is provided by others making threats. The aim of Nigel Lane’s chapter is his book is to give an alternative – something good as a prize. This might include: Setting up a simple chart on the refrigerator and filling in the squares when they have completed the task. This helps the child feel good about their efforts, encourages the other children with friendly competition and visitors can give the child encouragement too. A voucher system is easy to make and can be highly personalised. Some of the fulfilment can be cost free too – some examples would be;
An hour of TB watching Your favourite meal together One hour of undivided attention An hour later to bed A chore free day (or two!) An iTunes voucher Take-away for dinner Friends over for a sleepover DVD rental of your choice
The core message of giving a reward is that it acknowledges good behaviour and shows tangible appreciation. These things are increasingly rare in the life of a child as parents mostly use ‘things’ as a carrot (sometimes seen as a bribe) to do well.
Charts are available from the Chaplain so make good use of them. Remember to never put negative crosses or comments on the charts as shaming the child in this way reduces them on the inside and it’s difficult to recuperate.
Enjoy your family and have a great weekend. Anne Prime
