A total of 181 students from 11 states, includ- ing seven from Kentucky, earned an invitation to join the choir. Those selected were chosen based on a re- cording of a selected piece submitted to a panel of ACDA judges. The ACDA membership consists of choral directors who repre- sent more than one million singers across the United States. The Tilghman song- stresses are each a member of the Paducah Tilghman Choir and the school’s female a cappella group, Concordia. Collectively they have performed over a hundred times in concerts, recitals, musicals, church- es, for weddings, parties, civic clubs and charity functions. Betty JonesFULTON — Betty Sue

McKelvy Jones, 79, of Ful-ton died at 4:05 p.m. Tues-day at Golden Living Center in Union City, Tenn.

She was a member of Jackson Chapel Church and a secretary at the former Bugg Brothers Feed and Supply.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Jones; three daughters, Debbie Clark and Deanna Harner, both of Union City, and Denise Wright of Harrison, Ark.; two sisters, Dorothy Hamlin of Michigan and June Moran of Clinton; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wal-ter and Gladys Page McK-elvy.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Brown Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Bobby Barnett offi ci-ating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

thy Wood Brown, 83, of Princeton died Wednes-day at Lourdes hospital in Paducah.

Mrs. Brown was a retired Caldwell County teacher and a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Princeton.

She is survived by one son, Will Brown; one daughter, Dana Wrinkle, both of Princeton; and one grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wil-liam F. “Bill” Brown; and her parents, Karl Dana and Faye Childress Wood.

Services will be noon Fri-day at Central Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jim Stahr and Charley Morgan offi ciating. Burial will fol-low at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Clint “Shorty” Gray, 88 of Eddyville, died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday at Christian Care Center of Kuttawa.

He was a member of He-bron Baptist Church, where he had served as deacon. He was an honorably dis-charged veteran after serv-ing in Germany during World War II. He retired from ITT Grinnell in Princ-eton.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Polk Gray; one daughter, Nancy Thompson of Eddyville; one son, Rog-er Gray of Princeton; fi ve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Ann Gray; and two brothers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dunn’s Funeral Home in Eddyville with the Revs. Jerrell White and Bri-an Griggs offi ciating. Burial will follow in Hebron Cem-etery.

He is survived by his fa-ther and stepmother, Chris-topher Allen Hepburn and Sierra Nauman Hepburn; his mother Kandi Mullins of Paducah; three sisters, Cait-lyn Michelle Brown, Jour-ney Brown, and Savannah Brown; two brothers, Rich-ard Hatton and J-Den Mul-lins; paternal grandmother, Rena Hepburn; paternal grandfather, Daniel Stanley; maternal grandfather, Kevin Mullins; and paternal great-grandparents, Larry Hep-burn and Donna Scivally.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro with the Rev. Bobby Richardson offi ciat-ing. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery.

Blair, 87, of Smithland died Wednesday at Caldwell Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband, Leslie Blair Sr.; two sons, Leslie Blair Jr. of Marshalltown, Iowa, and George Blair of Smithland; one daughter, Deborah De-Guire of Smithland; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ethel Beeler.

Services will be at noon Friday at Lindsey Funeral Home with Lynn McWhert-er offi ciating. Burial will follow at Paradise Church Cemetery in Livingston County.

Traveling showMcNabb Elementary students recently enjoyed a performance by the Market House Story Theatre troupe. The traveling theatre is sponsored, in part, by a grant from the local Ronald McDonald House Charities. The theater goes into area schools to give children pre-K through 5th grade an interactive performing arts ex-perience. Approximately 13,000 students benefit from the yearly tour that brings theater arts curriculum into 52 schools in western Kentucky, northwestern Tennes-see, southern Illlinois, and southeastern Missouri.

Six Paducah Tilgh-man team members earned top awards in fi nals of the Hilltopper Speech Tournament in Bowling Green on Dec. 10.

The tournament, which was a qualifi er for the National Indi-vidual Events Tourna-ment of Champions in San Francisco next May, included schools from California, Ten-nessee, Indiana and Kentucky.

Tilghman students recognized in the fi nals were senior Maximillian Curry and sophomore Will Hancock, Varsity Broadcast Announc-ing; sophomore Gabe-riel McGovern, Novice Broadcasting; freshmen Tristen Miller and Erin Burba, Novice Storytell-ing and sophomore, Peter Girmaldi, Novice Poetry.

Non-advancing top 3 fi nishers were 1st-Victo-ria Potter and Kimberly Mai; 2nd-Lily Burba, Cade Perfi li, Yasmine Martinez, Trisha Stinson, Emily Page, Chandler Emmons Smith, Sean Blakley; 3rd-Cassie Arboleda.

Tilghman is cur-rently in eighth place in the National Forensic League Kentucky Dis-trict standings, based on speaking points so far in the season. There are three points sepa-rating the 6th, 7th and 8th place teams.

Tilghman students earn speech honors

VIDOR, Texas — Bil-lie Jo Spears, whose per-formance of “Blanket on the Ground” went No. 1 on the country charts in 1975, has died at age 73.

Carl Willis of R.S. Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee, Texas, con-fi rmed her death. He had no details, but The Orange Leader reported that she died Wednes-day morning at her home in the Southeast Texas town of Vidor, 85 miles northeast of Houston. No cause of death was stated.

The native of nearby Beaumont, Texas, was voted most promising female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in 1976. Her other hits included “Mr. Walk-er, It’s All Over” in 1969; “What I’ve Got in Mind’ in 1976; “Misty Blue” in 1976; and “If You Want Me” in 1977.
