DO YOU REMEMBER:

When a keyword was just a keyword? One word and no more and no less?

When webmaster’s hid keywords in white text on white backgrounds?

When desktop was the only search?

When 300 words was a worthy blog post and it earned green dot approval and page one ranking?

OR EVEN…

When “not provided” was actually provided in reports?

When a #1 rank meant you’d actually be at the top of page one search results?

Years ago I lost my love for SEO.

I felt abandoned in a sea of clients, their love of green dots, and their penalties from tricks and shortcuts.

When I lost my love for SEO, I lost control of my destiny.

I needed to remember that SEO really isn’t

about green dots.

I needed to remember what made me special

and unique.

I needed to remember that SEO was really about helping

others succeed.

I needed to remember that I could move mountains. I needed to remember that I did move mountains.

SEO showed me that I could moved mountains. I fought against the big guys and I won.

I did it by focusing entirely on the user and by helping the user at each stage of his journey.

I educated, I gained trust, and I built authority. All before we knew such tactics helped ranking.

And the best part – it was all by chance!

SEO has changed a lot in the last decade. And yet, SEO is still the exact same.

The goal of search has always been on the user and creating a positive user experience.

YOUR FIRST STEP IS TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT YOU & YOUR VISITOR:

Who are you? What do you do? What makes you different? Who do you compete with? Who do you help? How can you help them? What problems do your visitors have? What questions do they want to ask? Can you answer any of these questions?

Keywords are still important. They’re just more diverse! We just need to review them differently than in the past.

You don’t have to fight the knowledge graph, voice search, or any other Google shift.

You need to embrace Google’s shifts and educate yourself on the source of these changes.

You need to use SEO to help the user succeed.

You need to ask questions and offer solutions.
