Fall is on its way. The weather has been a

bit cooler recently and leaves have started

to fall to the ground. Is it just me, or did the

summer get shorter?? The kids are off to

school and soon it will be time to pick out

Halloween costumes.

CIRDC update:

This was a rough year for our canine popu-

lation (and at least one cat) with the out-

break of Canine Influenza Virus. I am cau-

tiously optimistic that the worse is past.

Unfortunately we are still not out of the

woods as new confirmed cases are still be-

ing reported. My own practice still sees new

cases, but much fewer than as in the week

and months before. Many parks and events

are relaxing their guard. The Chicago White

Sox had temporarily suspended canine

attendance to their Dog Days of summer;

but as of September 15th, the dogs “were

in the park” so to speak. With canine

attendance at dog parks and events back

on the rise, time will tell if we will see an-

other resurgence of this disease. Many of

you have seen and responded to the

CVMA survey regarding your practices and

the number of cases of Canine Infectious

Respiratory Disease Complex that you may

have seen and whether or not they were

confirmed to be due to Canine Influenza or

other pathogens. As “ground zero” for the

recent outbreak, we are viewed as the

go-to source regarding Canine Influenza.

These surveys are immensely valuable and

contain information that we have been

sharing with other states and communities

that have suffered outbreaks. In the coming

weeks and months, we will resend the sur-

vey to update the information regarding

new cases over the last months/quarter.

While answering these questions can be

tedious, I cannot overstate the importance

of this information.

ISVMA:

If you’re like me, the year has gone by fast-

er than expected…just like every year. I fre-

quently find myself scrambling to find an

end-of-the-year CE program to earn my CE

credits for the year. It certainly can be a

challenge to find an open period in my

schedule that matches up with one of the

few available conferences. For those of us

in this situation, there is GREAT news! The

ISVMA is having their annual convention at

the Crown Plaza in Springfield on October

23-25. You can earn 20 hours of CE credits

and enjoy a trip to our state capitol – all

within a few hour’s drive.

Download the brochure here: http://

isvma.org/2015ConventionBrochure.pdf.

Don’t forget, the CVMA has two remaining

CE events this year on October 14th and

December 9th, each worth 6 hours of CE.

Please visit the CVMA website or call the

office to register.

Public Education:

This year, one of the CVMA’s goals was to

increase the public’s understanding of the

benefits of proper and comprehensive pre-

ventive care for their pets. We have been

diligently working to achieve this goal by

creating new brochures to hand out at pub-

lic events, increasing our presence in the

community, and involving as many CVMA

members as possible. We have had the joy

and privilege of participating at events with

the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Fire, the

Arlington Pet Expo, Museum of Science and

Industry, with the Chicago Public School

system and many more. These have proven

to be truly wonderful and greatly enjoyable

experiences. The CVMA is frequently repre-

sented by its officers, board members, and

mostly by members of the public education

committee. It was brought up at the last

board meeting that many of our member-

ship would most likely like to participate as

well, but may not be aware of upcoming

events. We would love to have more and

more of you involved. It’s truly a great way

to connect with your community, get your name out, and

network with other’s in the pet industry. Please keep an

eye on your email as the office will send out updates re-

garding upcoming events and opportunities to partici-

pate. In addition, please visit the website frequently to

see updated event listings. Finally please feel free to con-

tact the office directly to find out where you can partici-

pate. If you know of an event that you think the CVMA

should participate in, PLEASE let us know!

Reminder: We currently we have two brochures available

for you to order: “Partners for Life: You, Your Pet & Your

CVMA Veterinarian!” -AND- “Preventive Care & Pet Own-

ership Responsibilities”. Be sure to call the CVMA office to

place your order today! These are free for you and your

clinic and provided by our Public Education Committee.

Legislative Update:

It has been a little quiet the last couple of months. There

are developing issues regarding the Cook Coun-

ty Companion Animal and Consumer Protection Ordi-

nance and a new lawsuit involving a business in Indiana,

the FDA and ability of veterinarians to travel with con-

trolled substances, and of course, the FDA’s emerging

stance on compounded drugs. At this point in time, there

is not much information to share, sooooo, no matter how

much you beg, I’m going to hold off on the legal speak

this bulletin. I know you’re disappointed.

To contact your legislator’s directly: www.ilga.gov.

Eric Voogd, Public Education &

Media Relations Director

Over the summer, members of the

CVMA board and I have been in close

communications with the American

Veterinary Medical Association and

Illinois State Veterinary Medical Asso-

ciation on key matters. As renowned

business expert John C. Maxwell

notes, “Leadership is not about titles,

positions, or flow charts. It is about

one life influencing another.” These

relationships between our Associa-

tions are ever so important as we

jointly collaborate and utilize one

another’s strengths to advance the

Veterinary profession. Autumn is al-

ready here as the Chicago Veterinary

Medical Association sets new initia-

tives in motion this fall and next year

that continue to demonstrate its de-

cisive leadership in strategic areas for

the benefit of our members.

This August, Junior Achievement of

Chicago (JAC) requested the CVMA to

participate in a more prominent

position with their education pro-

grams for middle, junior high, and

high school students. We are most

pleased to be partnering with JAC in

this expanded role, where members

of the Public Education Committee,

including Co-Chairs Drs. Priya Bhatt

and Monique Lewison, have consist-

ently demonstrated exemplary work.

These opportunities allow for our

doctors to engage young people

with STEM (Science, Technology, En-

gineering, and Mathematics) related

subject matter where the Veterinary

profession has an important voice.

If you love speaking with young

people and want to contribute to this

endeavor, a schedule is available

with dates and times in the Chicago

metro area for the 2015/2016 aca-

demic year.

On September 30th, I am speaking in

Urbana-Champaign at the University

of Illinois College of Veterinary Medi-

cine student orientation luncheon.

We clearly know from engagement

with young people at an early age

that the role of a mentor can be life

changing in helping them to achieve

their dreams and aspirations. Similar-

ly, part of the necessary foundation

for veterinary students to become

successful and confident practition-

ers requires professional guidance

from doctors who not only under-

stand the daily challenges, but can

impart these invaluable lessons. If

you desire to be connected with a

College of Veterinary Medicine stu-

dent from the University of Illinois

and help them as they join the pro-

fession, please let me know.

The CVMA returns once again for the

3rd Annual Science Works at the Mu-

seum of Science and Industry (MSI) in

Chicago from 10am to 3pm on Satur-

day, October 17th. The members of

the Public Education Committee have

consistently received the highest

praise from the leadership of MSI for

Let’s Talk: September Recap Dr. Julie Bunn, Committee Co-Chair

The membership committee hosted our

most recent small group discussion “Let’s

Talk: New Practice Owners” on Thursday,

September 10th at the CVMA office.

The topic was moderated by CVMA board

member and practice owner, Dr. Tracey

Hlede, and was attended by both current

and future practice owners. It was great to

get the insiders’ information on strategies

of buying a practice, new challenges of be-

coming “the boss”, and tips on marketing

and staff management. Thank you again to

all who participated.

Please welcome the newest group of

Congratulations to the CVMA’s Pet Loss

Helpline for 22 years of resolving the grief

of pet loss! We would like to thank those

involved with the Helpline for your dedica-

tion and commitment to the Human Ani-

mal Bond. The success of the CVMA Help-

line is inspiring, not only in the number of

years it has helped families, but also the

expanse of your reach across the country.

Thank you to this year’s Helpline volun-

teers, including veterinarians and hospital

staff, for your dedication and service!

22 Years of Resolving the Grief, Remembering the Good

The CVMA Foundation is planning for it’s

next annual FUNdraiser. We are planning a

big event to celebrate helping people help-

ing pets in need. The theme is Bollywood.

That means this event is going to be big,

colorful, festive, energized and a great suc-

cess! Have we peaked your interest?!?

The Fundraising team is looking for help in

making connections with event sponsors

and auction donors. Can you offer your

connections to help this event succeed?

We are currently working out details with

venues and entertainment and constantly

brainstorming new ideas to make this

March 2016 event one to remember.

If you are interested in participating in this

project, now is the time to step up! Please

their stellar and dedicated work interacting with the pub-

lic and sharing their love and passion for Veterinary Medi-

cine. This presents a wonderful occasion for you to send

your clients and their families to see the CVMA in action,

as our doctors will be meeting with over 10,000 individu-

als that day.

The Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) continues to be a defini-

tive, teaching moment. Its impact across the United

States underscores that veterinarians are a vanguard in

public health matters involving both the human and ani-

mal populations. In the beginning of October, you will be

receiving the third quarterly CVMA CIRDC Questionnaire

from the office to collect data for July, August, and Sep-

tember to be used by Dr. Donna Alexander and Cook

County Animal and Rabies Control. Members of the CVMA

are also discovering new CIV insights based upon never

seen before clinical observations. The lessons learned are

timely, and the voice of the Veterinary profession will be

a focal point in December 2015. Please save the date for

an upcoming conference Wednesday–Thursday, Decem-

ber 2nd & 3rd at Brookfield Zoo. Topics will include disas-

ter preparedness, emergency management, public health,

veterinary medicine, and animal welfare. This conference

will involve nearly 300 stakeholders from across the Mid-

western Federal Emergency Management Region V.

Finally, on a serious note, members of the Veterinary pro-

fession have been made the targets of cyberbullying this

summer. In August 2015, the American Veterinary Medi-

cal Foundation cancelled its “America’s Favorite Veteri-

narian” contest due to cyberbullying. The actions of an

individual to use the Internet to try to harass or humiliate

another person constitute cyberbullying. The Federal Bu-

reau of Investigation (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Cen-

ter, or IC3, has seen a substantial increase in reports of

cyberbullying over the past several years.

Not only can cyberbullying have damaging and

dangerous consequences to a person, cyberbullying can

violate federal law. This is a crime that must be reported

to the FBI. If you find yourself in these circumstances with

threats made to you (and your family) personally or your

business (and staff), please contact your local law en-

forcement and 911 (for an immediate threat). If you re-

quire assistance, please do not hesitate reaching out to

me so you are quickly directed to a FBI Special Agent, as I

have a close working relationship with leadership in the

FBI Chicago office. The CVMA will be providing more in-

formation for its members regarding the correct response

necessary to address and stop cyberbullying.

As the Public Education Committee continues to grow

with dynamic members, there are exceptional opportuni-

ties for you to join your colleagues. To contribute your

expertise in subject matter areas for public education arti-

cles, represent the CVMA in media through print, radio,

and/or television, or interact with pet owners and their

families at public events, or become involved through the

CVMA’s partnership with Junior Achievement of Chicago, I

look forward to hearing from you. Carpe diem!

Provided by Chicago Veterinary Medical Association Some content sourced from “Halloween Safety Tips for Pets” article on www.about.com.

Halloween can be fun and festive for people, but for pets it can also be dangerous. There are many Halloween pet safety hazards that are well-known (such as chocolate toxicity)

and some that are not (like xylitol toxicity). Here are some tips to help you ensure that

your pet has a happy and safe Halloween.

Things to Watch For on Halloween Halloween is fun for kids and adults, but it can be scary and stressful for pets. A constant ringing doorbell & strangely dressed people at the door can be stressful

for a pet. Some pets may experience diarrhea or even injure themselves if crated/contained. Consider keeping your pet in a separate quiet room, away from the door, when trick-or-treaters arrive. Strange people in even stranger clothes can frighten some pets.

Strangers in Costume may provoke an otherwise friendly pet into unexpectedly aggressive or fearful behavior.

Pumpkins or candles within a pet’s range are a fire hazard. Wagging tails and frightened cats zipping through the

house can easily knock over a lit pumpkin and cause a fire.

Keep your pets indoors. Halloween pranks committed against pets can be vicious, and black cats are particularly

at risk. Also, make sure that your pet doesn't run out of your home when you answer the door. In case your pet does escape, make sure it is wearing proper identification. Pets with identification are much more likely to be returned.

Halloween treats are for people, not pets. Be sure to warn children not to share their treats with pets. Candy

wrappers and lollipop sticks can be hazardous if swallowed and chocolate is poisonous for some types of pets.

Candy Concerns Candies, gum, mints, baked goods and chocolate containing the “sugar-free” sweetener Xylitol are highly toxic, causing rapid hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and liver failure in

dogs and possibly other species (ferrets). Chocolate is also toxic to pets. A 50-pound dog would have to eat about 50 ounces of milk

chocolate (but only 5 ounces of baking chocolate) for a toxic dose, but much smaller amounts can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Signs of chocolate toxicity: tremors, nerv-

ousness, vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, and in severe cases, seizures and death. If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, contact your veterinarian. Lollipop sticks and other plastic parts can cause intestinal obstruction and poten-

tially rupture the intestines, which is a life-threatening emergency.

Pet Costumes vs. Safety If you dress your pet in a costume, be sure that it doesn't interfere with the pet's ability to breathe, see, hear, move,

or bark. Also, consider reflective collars/gear for pets (and people).

For more information and tips about holiday safety for pets, call or visit your family veterinarian. Remember, your veterinarian is your very best source for advice on keeping your pet safe, healthy, and happy!
