The Shortlist

The laidback vibe of Cluny Court draws a constant stream of shoppers. Located along Bukit Timah Road and next to the Botanic Gardens, this two-storey colonial building is home to a handful of cafes, restaurants, a supermarket and specialty shops selling homeware, furniture and kids’ fashion. The shops are quaint and have an air of exclusivity – factors that make the shopping experience so wonderful. Here are three stores that have caught our eyes.

Cluny Court in a prime spot facing the main

street. This home décor store exudes

a warm and inviting front to passers-by

Founded by Australian-born Nina Beale,

Bungalow 55 offers an eclectic range of

The items are sourced from all around

the world, with a large fraction imported

from Europe, Australia and America.

There’s a predominantly colonial look to

the collection, but with a strong nautical

influence, evident in the blue accents

around the shop. The best part about visiting

When Casey Yew and her husband first viewed this 1,119-sqft condominium

apartment, it was love at first sight. Although the Upper Thomson Road location was an initial deterrence, the couple saw the bright side of staying in a quiet and serene location.

But what finalised the decision to get the unit was the layout of the apartment. “We were completely sold by the floor plan,” Casey says. “There’s a shared lift that opens straight to our foyer, so it looks like a private lift lobby. And the shape of the rooms are pretty unique as well.”

The young homeowners then sought out design firm Free Space Intent to help them realise their dream home. “I knew exactly what I wanted, which is a modern-looking home with a lot of personal touches in the furniture and accessories, but I had no idea how to achieve the look,” Casey confesses. “We needed to design this place to be a home that we’d want to stay in for a long time – it needed to be sleek, supple and modern.”

Together with the designer, the homeowners created the ideal interior for their lifestyle needs. For example, the master bedroom is fully carpeted and has four types of premium wallpaper for a truly lavish touch; the open-concept master bathroom is reminiscent of the ones found in luxury hotels; and even the glass-encased study room provides the perfect environment for the couple to work from home.

More importantly however, Casey didn’t want any over-the-top design elements that would overpower the basic look of the home. “I like to accessorise, so I wanted the basic design to be quite simple. That way, I can fill up the space with my own decorations and accessories,” she explains further. With the freedom to personalise her space, Casey and her husband can easily tweak the look of the home over the years.

Currently, the home has an “arty eclectic” look that Casey has cultivated over the last few months. Her personality is evident in her collection of quirky home accessories, ranging from novelty table lamps to cheerfully coloured cushions and unique wall art. Even the furniture – a mix of classic design pieces and custom modern furniture – is testament to her eclectic style.

The quest to personalise her home is an on-going event, Casey explains. “I’ll look around on my own and pick out items based on whether I think it’ll be appropriate for the look. If I’m unsure, then I’ll check with my interior designer.” While some homeowners dread the renovation and interior designing processes, it’s obvious that Casey really enjoyed the entire experience. “Even now,” she admits, “I still keep an eye out for things that will look good in our home. But I have to keep reminding myself that I can’t keep buying new things! I’ll run out of space to display them! ”
