General Manager’s LetterDear Mirasol Members,

Watching the news or reading the newspaper hasbecome depressing over the past few months, butas we begin 2009, I am very pleased to reportthat I have positive news! In last month’s Mirador,I commented that, especially in this troubledeconomy, the Club is in competition for your discretionary dollars and will focus on ways toadd value to your membership. I also mentionedthat your support over the past few months hasnever been greater, as was evidenced by the busiest

holiday week we have ever seen! It was wonderful to see your families enjoyour world-class facilities, participate in the many varied social and sportingevents, and create special family memories while at Mirasol.

We have made some revisions to our policies concerning immediate family that should encourage your families to enjoy your membership.Effective February 1, we are waiving the $25 per week Guest Pass fee forimmediate family – defined as parents, and children or grandchildren overthe age of 14. In addition, we will be offering discounted greens fees foryour immediate family. Hopefully, these changes will encourage you tohave your families visit more often! Please contact the Membership Officeif you have any questions.

As many of you may be aware, over 10% of the homeowners in Mirasol aresingle. This is a trend that clubs all over the country are experiencing, andmany clubs are making modifications to their programming and policies asa result. In December, Christina and Lauren from your Membership Officehosted a Singles Q&A Session to address any concerns, different program-ming, and other ideas to increase the singles patronage of the Club. We areexcited about some of the suggestions that were made and look forward torolling out some new programs soon.

The month of February brings Valentine’s Day and the Presidents’ Dayholiday school vacation week, so please remember that reservations for ourevents open 30 days in advance. I strongly suggest that you make your plansearly so you can be included! The Honda Classic (March 2-8, 2009) is alsocoming again across the street at PGA National. We will be selling ticketsagain at Mirasol for your convenience, as well as offering the complimentary“Mirasol Van” shuttle for our residents and your guests.

Wishing you health and happiness.

Sincerely,

Matt Lambert, CCMGeneral [email protected]

8 GOLF

From the Director of GolfGreetings! On Friday, January 2, we enjoyed an outdoor seminar onthe rules of golf by the USGA’s Director of Rules and Competition,Jeff Hall, who also happens to be the son of our starter, Alex Hall. The seminar was well attended, and by the comments from thosewho were there, the seminar was enjoyable and informative. TheNo. 1 thing I took from the seminar was what a great game we areall privileged to be a part of. It’s a game that is played by ladies andgentlemen, and a game that is played by the rules and is based onetiquette and sportsmanship. I know we all can take pride in beinginvolved in such an honorable game!

While investigating the USGA’s Web site, I came across some information I want to sharewith you. Regarding pace of play, the USGA recommends that an 18-hole round shouldtake no longer than four hours to complete, and that it is the responsibility of the playersto keep up with the group in front and maintain their position on the course. If they fallbehind and there is a faster group behind them, it is recommended to allow that groupto play through. Regarding care of the course, the concept is to leave the course betterthan you found it. Repair your ball marks on the green and other ball marks that mayhave been missed by one of your fellow players. At the completion of the hole, repairany damage that may have been caused by your spikes. Replace your divot or, in ourcase, make sure you fill your divot with the sand that is provided on your cart. If youshould play from a bunker, make sure to rake the bunker and, if damage has been left bysomeone else, take it upon yourself to also smooth over those footprints. If you have theopportunity, please visit the USGA’s Web site at www.usga.org, where you will findvaluable and interesting information.

TIP OF THE MONTHThis month, I will share with you some advice my instructor shared with me before thelast round of a New Jersey PGA Section event. It is advice that I believe can help anyonewho hopes to play their best. After a session in which we were working on my swing,he concluded the session by saying, “stop worrying about hitting a bad shot, everyonehits bad shots. Instead, concentrate and commit to doing what you need to do to besuccessful.” He went on to say that regardless of the outcome of the round and compe-tition, he would be proud of me. Of course, I asked him, “Why?” He replied that he knewI would give a good effort and regardless of what happened, I would never give up.

Think about the above advice and the message. The message is: Stop worrying aboutthe result; the best way to control the outcome is to commit to the process that givesyou the best chance of success. Do your best and never give up on yourself, no matterwhat happens. If you do this, you have won regardless of the score. I wish you well!

See you on the links,

Terry McDowell
