STEWARDSHIP

2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, ‘What are you

looking for?’” - John 1:38 What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time looking for the material

comforts of the world? Or, is your heart longing for something deeper that can only be found by spending time with God? Take time, each day, in silence and ask the Lord what it is that He wants you to do.

Ask Father James:

Jesus; The Lamb of God

In Genesis 22:1-19, Abraham is unconditionally commanded, "Take your son, your favoured one, Isaac, whom

you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will

point out to you." In that text, Abraham attempts to sacrifice his son Isaac on an altar and Isaac asked his

father Abraham; “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” (v.6)

to which Abraham responded, “God will provide for himself the lamb for the burnt offering.” Ever since then,

Jewish thought and later generations increasingly came to look forward to when Yahweh will provide this

lamb for the sacrifice.

In John 1:29 &36, John the Baptist sees Jesus passing by and declares; Look, “the Lamb of God…....” This

statement is seen as the fulfillment of Genesis 22 where Abraham states, “God will provide for himself the

lamb for the burnt offering” - Jehovah Jireh.

This statement of John's is believed to be the basis on which the New Covenant will be founded. It would

begin a new relationship of God and man in Christ (the new covenant). Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the

promise contained in Gen. 22:8, that God would provide the Lamb which would make atonement for universal

sin. The Old Covenant, where Abraham attempted to offer up Isaac as a burnt offering to take away sin was

not an acceptable sacrifice. Jesus will become the substitutionary sacrificial victim for the atonement for sin.

And consequently, our relationship with God will be founded upon our acceptance of his offering of himself

on the cross.

The confession of this belief is what we profess at the Latin Mass as Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi,

Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world..." After this profession, the priest then invites all present at

Mass to: "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (Jn 1:29).... Blessed are those who

are called to this Supper of the Lamb... St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 would make the connection for us. He

says; For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Feast, not with the old bread

leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth(1 Cor. 5:6-8).

Hosted by the Prairie Centre for Ecumenism and the Regina Council of

Churches, this study is free and open to all. A different Christian leader

will guide us each day as we explore the theme “Abide in my love and

you shall bear much fruit” (John 15:5-9).

The 2021 theme calls us to pray and to work for reconciliation and unity

in the church, with our human family, and with all of creation. Drawing

on the Gospel image of vine and branches, it invites us to nourish unity

with God and with one another through contemplative silence, prayer, and

common action. Grafted into Christ the vine as many diverse branches,

may we bear rich fruit and create new ways of living, with respect for and

communion with all of creation.
