What happened…• Spain gets Louisiana from France (1763)

• The United States declares its independence from England (1776)

• The US (with the help of Spain and France) wins the Revolutionary War (1783)

•AND all land west to the Mississippi River – except Florida

•Spain stopped building new missions since the French were no longer a threat on it’s eastern border (1790s)

• Now the two major powers in North America are the United States and Spain

• In 1803, Thomas Jefferson (the US) buys Louisiana from Napoleon (France) for $15 million. (1803)

• The United States DOUBLES in size and now has control of the Mississippi River. (important for shipping)

• Father Hidalgo issues his un grito and asks for the Spanish to fight for Mexican independence (1810)

• Mexico gains independence from Spain in 1821 and kicks Spain out of North America (1821)

• Now the two major powers in North America are the United States and Mexico
