1st Grade June News

Reading:For our final unit of reading, students will practice using smooth storytelling voices to bring out characters thoughts and feelings. They will zoom in on important parts, perform, talk, and think about their books with their book club members.

Writing:Our first grade writers are working hard writing fiction books! Children are learning that characters face a bit of trouble - and that writers get their characters out of trouble by giving their readers a satisfying ending. Students are currently engaged in planning and acting out to bring their lively imaginations to their serious work as writers. The students will be learning that writers use patterns to elaborate and they will then draw on their skills and knowledge as writers of fiction to create even more powerful stories.

Fundations:First graders are completing the final Fundations units in June. Students are expected to be able to read and write complete sentences combining all phonics skills and trick words introduced this year. They are identifying closed-syllables and vowel-consonant-e syllables in two-syllable words. They should be able to add the suffixes -s, -es, -ed, or -ing to change the meaning of words. Students are expected to notice vowel teams and r-controlled vowel sounds found in many words. Please be sure to review all trick words and all letter-keyword-sound patterns learned this year to help with decoding and spelling necessary for second grade reading and writing.

Math:Our first grade students will be learning about two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometry. Our students will be identifying and describing shape attributes. The students will be combining two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional shapes to create new shapes.

Social Studies:In our last unit, Economics, first graders will understand the difference between the words wants and needs and recognize that people work in communities to meet their needs and wants. Students will also identify the flag as one of the symbols of the United States.

Health:Our first grade students will be learning about Tobacco and Alcohol Prevention. Our students will be studying about how tobacco and its smoke can hurt the body. First graders are beginning to have a better understanding of how doing one thing makes another thing happen (cause and effect). They are ready to understand how using tobacco can hurt the body.

Science:Over the next few weeks, our first graders will learn about the summer season. We will discuss how to protect ourselves from the sun and how to dress appropriately for the warm weather. We will also be finishing up our planting unit.

Overview of Go-Math

Students will continue to study data tables, charts, and graphs. We will be ending the year with Geometry and Fractions.

ScienceStudents in all classes will be participating in observations of living organisms. Second graders will be learning about each stage of development: egg, tadpole, toadlet, and toad. No worries about the size of these toads as they are dime sized toads, just the perfect size for second graders. Students will also be learning what makes amphibians, toads and frogs similar yet very different.

Social StudiesWe will be studying social skills and economics. Students will be learning the differences between a want and a need. They will also be learning about goods and services and where many goods originate. In addition to this, they will also be proficient in what a producer and consumer is. MUSIC

I am very excited about the progress our 4th grade band has made this school year. I am looking forward to our performances at the 4th grade awards. It is also a very exciting time for our 3rd graders that have elected to learn an instrument next year. The 3rd grade will wrap up their "Recorder Karate" unit this month. (We may have some black belts before the summer!) Our musicians will continue to learn about new and interesting instruments and types of music. Second graders will start working on note-reading skills as they prepare for recorders in 3 rd grade. K and 1st grade students will continue to learn and explore all the different types of music and instruments.

4th Grade Orchestra: The students are gearing up for their final performance on Wednesday, June 6 th at the Junior High School! I have asked earnestly that they stay focused and make the most of their practice time leading up to this exciting day! The attire for our concert is white tops and black bottoms with a bright colored accessory (hair things, ties/bowties, socks). We do have a couple more lessons following the concert: the last day of lessons is Friday, June 15th. I hope that you will continue to support them in their instrument studies as they continue on to the Middle School ensembles next year. Their improvement has been tremendous and it has been my absolute pleasure getting to know them. They are truly wonderful children! As always, please do your best to help students avoid any absences from their lesson day and full orchestra rehearsal on Thursdays and to always bring their music folder with ALL their music inside, a pencil, and the Essential Elements book/packets to each rehearsal and lesson. It is their responsibility to practice at least 3-4 times each week and get their practice sheets signed by a parent/guardian weekly . See you at the concert!

What’s happening in Primary Physical Education?

It is hard to believe it’s the last month of school. For the month of June, students will be working on soccer skills and rope climbing. For the last week, students will have their “Time to Shine”. This is a chance for students to choose their

favorite PE activities and have some fun with their peers and PE teachers. We wish you all an amazing summer vacation. To our first grade students, you will be missed and good luck in second grade. To our Kindergarten students,

we look forward to seeing all of your faces in September.

-Mrs. Yovino & Ms. Richert

What’s happening in Secondary Physical Education?

In the intermediate building for the month of June, students will be working on two different things. Field days will be the week of June 4th – June 8th. After field day, the students will have their year in review unit to finish out the year. Students will have a chance to revisit some of their favorite activities and stations during this unit to end another great year of Physical Education.

-Mr. Riccio & Ms. RichertLIBRARY

This June, librarians from the Longwood Public Library will be visiting our school library to talk about the Longwood Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. Besides the marvelous books you can check out from the public library, they have numerous activities throughout the summer to enjoy.

I will be teaching your children through the end of June. Due to inventory of the library collection needing to be completed, the last day to check out books from the school library is May 25th with all library books being returned by June 1st.

Just as you practice a sport or musical instrument, reading is a skill to practice too. Please read to your children during the summer, and have them read to you. It has been a pleasure working with your children this year!

-Ms. HatemAs we enter the month of June, our attention turns to summer reading fun and the Longwood Public Library

Summer Reading Club Program. During the first week of June, the public librarians will visit our school library and present exciting details about the reading club and all of the other activities they have planned for the summer.

Our CEW students always achieve high levels of participation in the Summer Reading Club, thanks to the efforts of parents and grandparents who make sure that visits to the public library are part of their summer. Please encourage your children to join the Summer Reading Club. This will help prevent summer learning loss and will prepare them for a successful start to the school year in September.

Our last day for student book checkouts is Friday, May 25th and all CEW library books will be due back by Friday, June 1st. Library lessons will continue through the entire month of June with the following themes:

2nd Grade – Beatrix Potter Author Study3rd Grade – Dictionary Pictionary

4th Grade – A Look at the “Classics”

HEALTH OFFICE INFORMATIONJune 2017

I hope we all have big smiles to welcome the warm weather of June and prepare for our summer vacation. As our journey for this year together concludes, I hope you are excited to begin a new adventure this month!

There are 3 focus topics for June:1. National Safety Month2. Flag Day3. International Children’s Day

National Safety Month is something that we can all benefit from. Be dressed and ready for a day of fun. Don’t forget your sneakers and sunscreen! Flip flops are great for the beach but are not appropriate SAFE footwear for school. When playing in or around water always be sure that you can see your children and that they can see you. Encourage floatation devices when experiencing a new water adventure. Be sure life jackets fit securely and are Coast Guard approved. Always wear appropriate safety equipment when playing any sports and NEVER forget your helmet when you grab your bike, scooter, skateboard, horse, quad, mini bikes or go-karts. Don’t forget buckle up!

June 14th is Flag Day. Have your children wear their flag colors. Hang a flag together at home to celebrate as well!

June 1st is International Children’s Day. Take an opportunity to play like a child with your child. When we see their smiles it may help remind us how we felt to just get out and PLAY!

We will miss you during the summer. As always, stay safe and healthy!
