Recreation NewsBy Bree Nash

Thank you all for celebrating our upcoming annual Independence Day Celebration with us! It’s a great kick-off to summer fun, music and entertainment. The Ithaca community has wonderful concerts in many of the local parks and community centers – and they’re free! We’ll continue to spend time in the great outdoors for more berry picking, trips to the Ithaca Farmer’s Market and the Cornell Plantations, along with our weekly picnics at the local state parks! Is there another place you’d like to go? Please let us know!!!

July is full of events to get you out and about in this beautiful Ithaca weather. It sure is getting hot, so remember to stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids. Be sure to protect yourself from harmful UV rays with sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.

What Makes Us Human: Through the Artists EyesWe’re excited to host Carol Hockett, Johnson Museum of Art Educator to Longview who will explore the major states of life (and art) in a three part series. We’ll look at examples from Asia, Europe and Africa as well as South American and Meso American cultures covering material from the ancient world through contemporary painting and sculpture. The programs will take place on the following Tuesdays from 10:45 – 11:45 a.m.:

July 10 – How we worship: Faith and the sacredJuly 17 – How we Love: Love, Marriage and the Family July 24 – How we prepare for death and the next world: Art and the Afterlife

Have you ever worked or been interested in working in a Library? We have a unique opportunity for you! Longview is starting a Library Committee and we are interested in your input. Anyone that would like to be involved can attend a Library Committee meeting on July 12 at 1 p.m. in the Library. If you cannot attend the meeting, please speck with Bethany Calkins in Recreation. Hope to see you there!

All the best!

Bree, Bethany, Laurie, Sarah, Soni and Cora

Ithaca College Partnership Events By Chris Pogorzala

IC Lecture Series: The Pirates of Penzance: An Introduction and AppreciationGilbert & Sullivan were the superstars of 19th Century musical theater. Their work echoes down to today! The Pirates of Penzance, which had its premiere in New York City on New Year’s Eve, 1879, is one of their best known operettas. The show gave us a Pirate King, who has the heart of a poet and Pirates who go about the countryside in search of brides. It also has a gaggle of English maidens frolicking at the seashore and a modern Major General who knows quadratic equations, but isn’t too sure of what a commissariat is! And, it features young Fredrick, the slave to duty, who may be the world’s unluckiest Leap Year baby.

Come hear about the creation of the show, have its tangled plot untangled for you, and hear some of the great music from the show that is almost as popular today as it was more than a century ago!

Your guide to The Pirates will be Jim Mica, a member of the Summer Savoyards--a group that has been mounting productions of Gilbert & Sullivan’s works since 1961 in Binghamton, New York. (Jim is also a Research Specialist for Ithaca College’s Office of Admissions.)

The presentation will take place July 17 at 7:00 PM in the Longview Auditorium.

IC Lecture Series for July: Card ShufflingOn Wednesday, July 18th from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in the Longview auditorium, John Rosenthal, a professor of Mathematics at Ithaca College, will give a talk about card shuffling as a way to demonstrate various principles of mathematics. He will reveal a systematic way to shuffle a deck with an even number of cards and demonstrate that after some number of repetitions of this systematic shuffle, the deck is restored to the original order. Professor Rosenthal will also discuss various ways to compute this number of shuffles. In the process this topic will be used to illustrate various aspects of mathematics. This topic will also be connected to a recently solved problem in mathematics and to another, as yet unsolved, problem.

Be Sharp! Stay Sharp! Takes a BreakThis brain aerobics group led by Chris Pogorzala will be on hiatus during July, but will start up again on Wednesday, August 8 at 3:00 PM in the Ithaca College Classroom on the second floor of Longview.

Page 5: LONGVIEW NEWS · 02 Shopping Trips: 7/2 – Tops (Mon. trip) 7/5 – Walmart 7/9 – Wegmans 7/12 – The Dollar Store 7/17 – Aldi 7/19 – Target 7/24 – P&C 7/26 – Kohls 7/31

Important Dates Coming Up in August for Those Interested in Auditing CoursesChris Pogorzala will offer an information session on auditing courses at IC and a number of ‘walk-in’ advising sessions in the Ithaca College Classroom to help Longview residents select classes and complete the registration paperwork. Mark your calendars for: • Course Audit Information Session: - Monday, August 6th from 2:30 - 3:00 PM

• Walk In Advising Sessions: - Monday, August 6th from 3:00 - 4:00 PM - Tuesday, August 7th from 9:00 - 11:30 AM - Thursday, August 9th from 2:30 – 4:00 PM - Monday, August 13th from 2:30 - 4:00 PM

Residents may audit up to six credit hours of courses during the fall semester. Registration is on a space available basis with permission by the instructor and takes place just prior to the beginning of each semester. Classes held on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday are 50 minutes long and those on Tuesday & Thursday are 75 minutes long.

The Longview/IC Shuttle provides transportation to courses offered in the mornings (Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, and 12:00 and Tuesday/Thursday at 9:25 and 10:50). The first day of classes for the fall semester will be Wednesday, August 29.

For those who are interested in reviewing the courses offered in Fall 2018, there is a handout with instructions for looking at the course schedule online and a handout with general information about auditing courses available on the Ithaca College Information Rack located at the end of the short hallway just inside the main entrance of Longview. There are also four notebooks available for people to borrow from Bree Nash in Recreation that have a printed list of only the courses offered during the times the shuttle runs.

If there are questions about using the online course schedule or the abridged copy of the schedule in the notebooks, please contact Bree Nash at Longview (375.6335 or [email protected]) or Chris Pogorzala at Ithaca College (274.1051 or [email protected]).

What Do You Do If You Received Mail In Your Mailbox That Is Not Yours?Did you get someone else’s mail by mistake? If this happens to you, please do the following:

Write the work “refused” across the face of the envelope and then write either person not at this address or wrong address (as appropriate), draw a line through the bar code at the bottom of the letter, and then drop the refused mail into the outgoing U.S. Mail slot located across from the 3rd floor elevators. For your information – this

process only works for 1st class mail or mail items marked return receipt requested. It does not work for bulk mail or catalogs; these can go directly to recycling.

The mail carrier will return it to the sender or deliver it to the correct person. Please remember that we do not have the same mail carrier every day of the week. Please help him/her out by sending returned mail back correctly.
