The first month of the season is behind us and although we all are

hoping for warmer weather, the golf course is responding well despite the

cooler spring temperatures and slow growing conditions. The greens depart-

ment was able to complete our bi-annual aeration of greens during the first

week of April setting the foundation for an exciting 2014 season. We em-

barked on a major bunker project during the first part of the month that was

completed on April 29th, in which we edged and insured proper sand depths

on all bunkers throughout the property. Approaches were groomed and verti-

cutted twice to improve plant health, playability and aid in achieving lower mowing heights for

tighter lies. Various other tasks outside of daily maintenance practices were completed includ-

ing sod work, water fountain repair, cart path repair, new bed prep on #13 tee, sprinkler yardage

cap installation and cleaning up gullies.

If you attended the Golf Update Dinner during the first of April or have had the chance to

dust off the clubs for a round this season, you were able to catch a glimpse of the new method

to controlling cart traffic on each hole. In an effort to reduce the clutter of rope-lines and signs

on each hole, you will now notice two blue/white posts at the exit point of each hole. When

playing a hole, exit the fairway at the post in a direct route to the cart path adjacent each green

complex. This method will greatly reduce the wear and tear around our green complexes while

improving turf health and playability. Thank you for your cooperation in advance as we continue

to provide the best possible experience for the membership and your guest.

CONGRA TULATIONS KEN PI ZZICA

As the season progresses and the temperatures rise, so do rounds of golf. It is im-

portant for the integrity of our putting surfaces and the golfers behind that we all make a con-

scious effort to repair ball marks while enjoying a round at Longue Vue. Over the past few

weeks, I have noticed an increased amount of unrepaired ball marks on a daily basis. On Fri-

day, April 25th, I placed a golf ball on each unrepaired or improperly repaired ballmark on the 7th

green. As indicated in the picture, over 100 golf balls were utilized in this demonstration. A

ballmark left behind prolongs the recovery time and leaves scars on the greens for weeks. An

unrepaired ballmark also influences playability by effecting ball roll. Please take the time to

check out the blog (www.longuevuegreens.blogspot.com) for a video clip posted from the

USGA on the proper way to fix a ball mark.

We will continue to hit our stride in May as the greens department has multiple tasks in

store on the golf course. We are planning to groom and verti-cut fairways during the first of the

month, additional grooming on greens and approaches, install the remaining sprinkler yardage

tags, annual spring flower plantings, pre-emergent application and much more as we continue

to improve the playability and experience for the membership and their guests. As always,

MEMBER MONDAYS - N EW! EX PAND ED GOLF OPPORT UNITI ES

The Golf Committee and Pro Shop in conjunction with the Greens Committee and

Grounds Crew are happy to announce that we will try to open the course to member

play one Monday afternoon each month. The first of these days has been scheduled

for Monday, May 19. In order to allow Josh Saunders and his crew

to do the work they need to on Mondays, tee times will start at 1:00

p.m. The last tee time will be 5:00 p.m. and no carts will be allowed

out after this time. The Pro Shop and Locker rooms will be open

starting at noon, and the driving range will be open from 12:30 until

5:00p.m. Tod Pierce and the clubhouse staff are arranging a lim-

ited lunch buffet that will run from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m., so you may

host guests here. We hope that you are able to take advantage of

this “bonus” day to play. Look for more Member Mondays through-

out the summer!

Congratulations to Ken Pizzica for being inducted in the Penn Hills Sports Hall of

Fame on April 25, 2014. Ken was nominated because of his accomplishments as a

golfer and his contributions to the game of golf.

Narrow Your Focus on Visually Intimidating Holes

Later this month the PGA Tour Players’ Championship will be played at

TPC Sawgrass. The par 3 seventeenth is one of the most visually intimi-

dating holes in all of golf. Even though the best players in the world will

only be hitting a short iron or even wedge into the green, you will see many

of them struggle on this iconic hole. While you may not have an island

green par 3 on your home course, there is something you can learn from

playing a golf shot on a visually demanding hole.

Choose a target. This may sound too simple, but it is essential. It is im-

portant to remember that your target is not always going to be the flagstick. It is reported that

when asked why he never made a hole-in-one, Ben Hogan replied that he never aimed at the

flagstick. Below is a photo of the par 3 third at Longue Vue Club. My target is always the small

bush on the hillside behind the green, even when the hole location is back-left as it is in the

photo. It is a conservative line, but my goal on this particular hole is to hit the green in regula-

tion and take my chances two-putting for par. I’d gladly take a three each and every round.

N EW! “ALL YOU CAN PLAY” D ISCOUNTED GU EST DA YS

Starting in May, the Golf Committee is implementing a new discounted guest program for

this season on Tuesday and Saturday afternoon. The program runs like this… Members

may bring up to three guests after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays at a rate of $75.00 per

guest. This rate covers both the green fees and the carts fee. , as is for as many holes as you

can paly. Obviously, tee times will be based on availability. Members who have the Be My

Guest program always have the option to use their passes instead of using the discounted rate,

just let the Pro Shop know if that is what you wish to do. It is the hope of the committee that all

our members take advantage of this new opportunity to show off our great club to their guests.

The junior golf program has undergone some changes for 2014. Clinics will be at a new, later

time and the program for middle/high school aged kids will be vastly different. Details of the new programs

are outlined below. Please call the Golf Shop to sign-up and for additional information.

KIDS CLINICS

For juniors who are just starting to learn the game of golf or just want a fun and exciting refresher course, we will be holding 12 one-hour clinics. These clinics are open to all of Longue Vue Club’s juniors ages 6 to 12. During these clinics we are going to be covering all of the basics from grip & stance to chipping, putting, bunker play, full swing, as well as etiquette and the rules of golf. Golf clubs will be made available to those

juniors who need them. We will be offering these clinics at a new time, from 10:00 – 11:00am.

Dates for the Kids Clinics are as follows:

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday June 18, 19, 20

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday June 25, 26, 27

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday July 15, 16, 17

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday July 22, 23, 24

The Cost of these clinics is $30 per session.

Junior SWAT

New this year we are going to have a Junior SWAT. It is going to be held on Wednesday mornings at 9:00am. A 30-minute instructional clinic will be held at 9:00, followed by tee times beginning at 9:30. Jun-iors will have the opportunity to play golf with someone from our professional staff. The cost for this is $15 per day and includes prizes. This program is designed for highly advanced, competitive junior golfers that are able to play golf while walking and carrying their bags for 18-holes in a timely manner within Longue Vue Club’s pace of play guidelines. The first Junior SWAT will be on Wednesday, June 18th and continuing on Wednesdays in June & July. Please call the Golf Shop to sign-up on a weekly basis. EVENTS

Junior Club Championship

The 2014 Junior Club Championship is going to be held on Wednesday, July 30th with starting times begin-

ning at 9:30am. As opposed to past years, there will be only one age division.

Pro Shop - Junior Scramble

The Pro Shop Junior Scramble is going to be held on Thursday, July 31st. It will be a fun event, which in-cludes the juniors getting to go out and play 7-holes with the Professionals. Following the round there will

be a lunch buffet and prizes for all participants.

Junior Diebold Team Matches

The format for the Junior Diebold Matches has been changed. In 2014 and beyond, one of the four clubs will host a one-day event. Each club will play four junior boy golfers and, if possible, two junior girl golfers. Oakmont Country Club will be hosting in 2014. The date and time has yet to be determined. The 18-hole team qualifier will be on Saturday, June 21st at 2:30pm.

Private Instruction

Private game improvement lesson packages are also going to be available for individuals that are looking to take their game to the next level. They will consist of 3 half hour lessons along with a nine-hole playing les-

son. Please call the Pro Shop to get more information and to sign-up.

It is vital that young golfers be properly fit for their equipment, particularly the length of

their clubs. Clubs that are too long and too heavy hinder the development of young golf-

ers, forcing them to make compensations with their swings that take years to re-

verse. Because of this, young golfers should be fit each and every year for their

clubs. To combat the cost of buying an entirely new set each year for your sometimes

fast-growing children, we are offering a leasing program through U.S. Kids Golf. For

$100, your child will receive a set of clubs and bag to use for the 2014 golf season. You

will return the set to us at the end of the golf season and will get fit again the following

spring for another set. Please stop by the Pro Shop 1st to get fit, or tell us your child's

While nothing compares to Longue Vue in person, Longue

Vue in print is terrific too. Longue Vue is proud that our

Clubhouse has been included with other fabled clubhouses

such as Augusta, Medinah, Saint Andrew’s, Shinnecock

Hills, and Winged Foot in Richard Deidrich’s book, Legend-

ary Golf Clubhouses of the U. S. and Great Britain. A won-

derful addition to our library or coffee table, this volume is a

terrific gift. The book is available in the office for $50.00,

which is a 33% savings over the suggested retail price.

Sporting Clays is a great sport to be enjoyed year round. Everyone is

encouraged to stop by the skeet lodge and check out the recent remod-

el. For those of you who are new to the sport, LVC offers trap, skeet

and five stand. Walt Oggier, our shooting attendant is always happy to

share his knowledge of the sport and is available to work with shooters

of all ages and experience levels. The Shooting Ground is open year

round on most Thursday evenings, Saturday afternoons from 11:00

a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. The Club has

guns, vests, safety glasses, ear protection and ammunition available for

your use. Why not try your hand at a game of five stand, trap or skeet?

It is also a great way to entertain clients or special guests.

Please note the following exceptions to the Shooting Ground Hours:

On Saturdays May 3 and 10, 2014, Trap and 5 stand only will be open from 9:30

a.m. until 12:00 p.m. There will be limited availability to the Skeet Lodge during

these times. The Shooting Ground will not be available on Friday, May 9, 2014.

June 16 Ladies’ Beginner Clinic On June 16 from 10-11 a.m., a beginner clinic will be held. All members are invited to this clinic to learn the basics of tennis.

August 16, 17 Longue Vue Adult Club Championships On the weekend of August 16 and 17, the Adult Club championships will be held. Events will include Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

Junior Tennis Programs and Events June 9-13 and July 7-11 Junior Tennis Week-long CAMP “NEW” Longue Vue will hold 2 comprehensive Weekday Day tennis camps from June 9- 13 and July 7- 11. Each 25-hour week-long camp will be held Monday-Friday from 10am-4pm. June 16-August 15 Junior Summer Clinics 8 weeks of junior clinics will be held Monday–Friday from 11:15- 1:45.

June 20 Junior Traveling Team Matches Juniors ages 9 and older who demonstrate the ability to play matches are invited to play on the traveling team Juniors will be selected based on their interclub rankings, ability to serve, and professional analysis. July 19 and 20 Junior Club Championships On the weekend of July 19th and 20th the Junior Club Championships will be held. Events will include boys singles and doubles and girls singles and doubles.

2014 S WIM L ESSONS

Group swimming lessons will be offered beginning Tuesday, June 10th and will end on Thursday, July 17th. Please see the schedule below for specific dates and times. In order to accommodate the varying ability of swimmers, two differ-ent group levels will be offered and are described below. Private lessons will also be available throughout the summer. Tadpole Group This group is designed for children 3-6 years of age who are not yet comfortable in the water and/or cannot perform basic swimming skills such as floating, treading water, streamline kicking, and blowing bubbles through the nose under-water. These skills are the focus of the Tadpole Group. Lessons for this group will run from 11:15am-11:45am.

Guppy Group This group is designed for children 5 -8 years of age who are comfortable in the water and can perform basic swimming skills such as floating, treading water, and alternating arm strokes. Swimmers in this group will learn how to improve these skills as well as become more proficient at streamline kicking, competitive freestyle, and proper breathing tech-niques. Lessons for this group will run from 11:45am-12:15pm.

Private Lessons Private lessons will be available for those interested in having one on one instruction. All private lessons need to be scheduled through the Pool Manager.

marie Calandra. Mrs. Tohme is the former Kim Calandra.

We welcome Thatcher Isaac Garrison, born on April 5 to Stephen and Emily (Troutman) Garrison.

Thatcher joins 20 family members who are members of the Club, including his maternal grandpar-

ents, Jay and Margo Troutman. He will have no shortage of cousins to play with at the pool.

sweet finish to your Mother’s Day celebration. The cost for Mother’s Day Brunch is $28.00 for adults, children 4 -12

The Dinner Buffet will be served from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Enjoy the carving station featuring roast

prime rib of beef , au jus with horseradish sauce and citrus roasted turkey breast with pineapple

chutney. The buffet will also feature sautéed chicken scaloppini saltimbocca, grilled hebi, and

orecchiette pasta Bolognese with sweet sausage, mushrooms and broccolini. Gourmet red

potatoes with chives, fresh spring vegetable medley, and a wonderful array of salads will pro-

vide wonderful balance to our dinner. Of course there will be kid favorites and a wonderful as-

sortment of desserts. The cost for the dinner buffet is $29.95 for adults, children age 4 - 12 pay their age and chil-

dren 3 and under are free.

Plan to spend the day with Dad, enjoying a game of golf, leisurely swim or afternoon of skeet.

There will be sandwich specials at the pool designed with Dad in mind and a cookout buffet for

dinner. There is no a la carte dining for dinner on Father’s Day.
