Page 2: Longue Vue Club 2016 newsletter.pdfApril to aid in aesthetics and improve playability while maintaining consistent depths. Being ahead of the game is advantageous as a busy April approaches.

March is in the books and we have clearly “Sprung” forward into the season. Although

periods of on and off rain left the ground saturated to the point of limiting carts, I am excited at the

progress and how ahead of schedule the course is leading into the season. According to my rec-

ords and growing degree models from previous years we are close to three weeks ahead of sched-

ule and it is evident in the green-up throughout the property and the progress towards annual pro-

jects to prepare for the season.

Halfway through the month of March all playing surfaces have experienced their first cuts

of 2016. This is beneficial towards root growth as soil temperatures begin to rise in combination with warmer ambient

temperatures and the plant begins to wake up. Green-up and first cuts were not experienced till April during my first few

years prior to 2016. Therefore, allowing the plant to wake up naturally without pushing the envelope is going to promote

plant health heading into the season. In addition to mowing, two key projects that consume much of the spring are near-

ing completion as of April 1st. All beds have been cleaned, edged and prepped for mulch. The process of prepping the

bunkers for the season by edging and redistributing sand has also been completed. Adding new sand will take place in

April to aid in aesthetics and improve playability while maintaining consistent depths.

Being ahead of the game is advantageous as a busy April approaches. The capital project of Cart Path work on

holes 1-4 will begin around the first week. Our spring Aerification will highlight the first part of the month with a set start

date of April 11th. Cores will be pulled on Greens, Tees and Approaches followed by a layer of topdressing and soil build-

ing amendments. Fairways will be sliced during this week as well. The warmer weeks leading into Aerification will aid in a

quick recovery. Following Aerification, attention will be placed on a few scheduled projects along with continuing to

grooming the course for the conditions you have grown to expect.

As your visits to the course start to increase, I wanted to make you aware of the spots that you will notice in our

collars. There is no reason to be alarmed, the spots are the result of spot applications to eradicate the ryegrass this past

fall.

Unfortunately, some ryegrass did migrate its way during the

transplant process from #16 during the intermediate/collar project, a

far cry from the population prior to the fall of 2014. With the warmer

temperatures, existing bentgrass has already started to work its way

into the voids. The combination of Aerification and fertility applica-

tions will also help towards recovery. Any spots lagging behind post

Aerification will be plugged using nursery sod.

In closing, I wanted to remind everyone that we still have plenty of firewood for sale and although spring is here;

it is never to early to plan for next year. As you can see, things are really starting to ramp up on the course so the capabil-

ities of delivery will be limited and will cease around the middle of April. If interested, please contact Matt Wolfe at

[email protected]. Till then, remember to check out the blog (www.longuevuegreens.blogspot.com) or follow us on

Twitter (@lvcgreens) for all the updates and happenings both on and off the course. Enjoy the Masters and get the itch

for golf, we look forward to seeing you on the course!

GOLF TI PS FROM TH E P ROS BY DEREK DEJ IDAS , PGA

Practice Like a Tour Pro

As our golf season gets underway many of you will head to the practice range to wear

off the rust from the winter hiatus. Here are a few tips on getting the most out of your

practice this season.

Develop a Plan * Come to the practice tee with a pre-determined plan and stick

to it. Decide before you go to the course what areas of your game you are going

to work on and for how long. Set a timer if you need to (this sounds simple, but is

actually quite difficult).

Pick a Target & Use an Alignment Aid * It’s difficult to determine if you have hit a good shot if you don’t

know where you’re aimed and aligned. So place an alignment stick or one of the clubs you’re not swing-

ing at the moment on the ground parallel to your target line. Set up with your body lines parallel to the

alignment stick. It helps greatly to have a visual point of reference like this. Soon you will start to “see”

the alignment stick on the course.

Spend at Least One-Third of Your Time on Short Game * According to Dr. Mark Broadie, for every

stroke of improvement we achieve, 35% of is the result of better performance in short game/putting and

65% is the result of better performance tee-to-green. So I believe in makes sense to spend at least

one-third of your total practice time with your wedges and putter.

Practice Like You Play * Hit every shot like you mean it! Go

through your entire pre-shot routine for every practice shot you play,

whether a full swing, short game shot or putt. This quality over

quantity approach will translate to better focus on the golf course.

Play the Course on the Range * Playing shot after shot that you

would normally face on the golf course will make your practice

session more interesting and fun! This type of Random Practice will

help transition your range game to the golf course.

Alternate Your Clubs * Using your odd numbered clubs one day and your even numbered club the next

will reduce the overall wear on your set and keep you from always practicing with the same or a favorite

club.

When It’s Okay to Take a Mulligan * If after about a dozen swings things aren’t going as well as you’d

like, hit the reset button. Go back to the locker room, take a 5-minute break, and head to the range to

start over. If things continue to not go well, scrap your plan and work solely on your short game. The

absolute worst thing you can do in this situation is seek out additional instruction and cloud your mind

with additional thoughts. Stick with your swing thoughts and trust your coach’s plan. In other words,

grind it out! Sometimes it just takes more repetitions for your swing to click. Plus the extra short game

practice will come in handy when you have one of these days on the course and you need your short

game to save your round.

U.S . OPEN WEEK POLIC Y

The 2016 U.S. Open is being held in Pittsburgh at Oakmont Country Club June 13 through 19.

When the U.S. Open was last held at Oakmont in 2007, the event generated a lot of interest in

playing golf here at Longue Vue Club. The club was booked virtually the entire week and saw its

most profitable month ever. In anticipation of similar demand, the Board of Governors will be

allowing outside play Monday through Friday of that week at a premium price. As we anticipate

that Longue Vue will be exceptionally busy, we are enacting special play guidelines for the week

and want our members to be aware well in advance.

Monday through Friday the club will have an 8:30 a.m. shotgun for all morning play. (There will

not be a Tuesday Ladies’ Day or Ladies’ Thursday SWAT, nor will there be a Friday Blue Tee

SWAT.) This shotgun will be open to members and their guests, as well as corporate groups,

and potentially some limited Oakmont member play. In order to keep play moving and not over-

load the course, the morning shotguns will be limited to 108 players. You may sign up for a spot

in the morning shotguns now. We will switch to tee times for those afternoons, with times begin-

ning at 1:30 off of both #1 and #8 tees. (All times other than the weekday morning shotguns will

open Friday, March 18.) Tee times will end approximately 3:30 each afternoon so our greens

crew can prepare the course for the following day’s shotgun. The 1st tee will re-open on Friday

following the last group that has to cross from #18 to #1. The 1st Tee will be open for the re-

mainder of the evening, as there will not be a shotgun on Saturday morning.

Members may bring 3 guests each day under our normal guest provisions. If you bring more

than 3 guests on any day from June 13 through 17, the 4th guest and beyond will be charged the

package rate of $300 (includes green fee, cart fee, gift, and lunch).

Saturday and Sunday play will return to normal play with the exception that tee times will begin

at 7:00 with times from 8:00 – 10:00 being reserved for the SWAT. The times from 10:00 until

approximately 10:15 will be reserved for the Ladies SWAT. Following the Ladies SWAT, times

will be open for normal member play including any guests that a member may wish to bring.

The first 3 guests on either day of the weekend will be under normal provisions. The 4th guest

and beyond will be charged a rate of $200 (includes green fee, cart fee, and gift).

It is vital that young golfers be properly fit for their equipment,

particularly the length of their clubs. Clubs that are too long and too

heavy hinder the development of young golfers, forcing them to make

compensations with their swings that take years to reverse. Because

of this, young golfers should be fit each and every year for their clubs.

To combat the cost of buying an entirely new set each year for your

sometimes fast-growing children, we are offering a leasing program

through U.S. Kids Golf. For $100, your child will receive a set of clubs

and bag to use for the 2016 golf season. You will simply return the set to us at the end of

the golf season and will get fit again the following spring for another set, or you may

purchase the existing set you have leased for an additional $150. Please stop by the Pro

Shop before May 1st to get fit, or tell us your child's height. Feel free to give us a call at

the Pro Shop at 412-793-2375 with any questions or further details.

2016 JUNIOR CLUB L EA SING PROGRAM

TaylorMade Tour Preferred Glove, Adidas Cap with LVC Crest, and Adidas Solid Shirt

with LVC Crest.

By purchasing the Corporate Gift Package, you are entitled to a 15% discount on all Tay-

lorMade clubs for you and each of your guests. Professional fitters will be on site to pro-

vide club fitting recommendations. Please contact the Golf Professional Shop at Longue

of Governors, in conjunction with each club committee, has approved and implemented these

rules to ensure an equitable and enjoyable experience for all members and their guests when

TH E VU E FRO M VIN EYA R D AND TA BLE

Greetings Everyone!

April is the month for the kickoff to the adult beverage season at Longue Vue.

We have the Vine Club kicking off its second season on Thursday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m.

The first Vine Club meeting of the season will feature select Robert Mondavi Wines, with

a special limited edition vintage. It will be a great way to uncork season. New to this year’s Vine Club are

food stations available immediately following the presentation of the wines. Everyone is welcome to enjoy

them for a cost of $25 inclusive of tax and gratuity.

It isn’t too late to sign up for the 2016 Vine Club. If you are thinking about it, shoot me an email or stop by and

see me at the club. Cost for the Vine Club is $250 per couple or $200 if you have a wine locker at LVC.

There is also a Wine Dinner this month! More wine and everyone is welcome! We are hosting a South

American Wine dinner on Friday April 15. With the help of Karen Crawford, we tasted a number of great

South American wines and narrowed the field to six. We will be passing a wine upon your arrival and then

going into a five course wine dinner. Don’t forget, someone in attendance will be helping us pick the theme

and select the wines for the Fall Wine Dinner in November. I will draw the name of one lucky attendee and

the cost of his or her dinner that evening will covered by Tod Pierce. Please sign up online or give us a call.

Last, but not least where beverages are concerned, is the kickoff of the Beer Club on Wednesday, April 27.

More information is available in the article on the following page.

Enough about the drinks, lets look toward great food. Every Saturday night in April will be Prime Rib Night. I

know it’s been a long Lenten season this year, so here is the chance to enjoy the delicious tender beef you

have been longing for.

Another new program is that of the Chef’s Table. A formal spin on Dining With A Vue, you would meet with

Chef Phil and collaborate on a 5 course dinner menu to be enjoyed by all at your table. Depending on the

season and weather, you may choose to host your event on the Pink Terrace/Grill Room or Golfer’s Terrace/

Cocktail Lounge. Chef’s Table dates are listed in the newsletter and their is only one table per date, so don’t

wait to reserve your date. These will be selling fast. The cost is $75 per person not including alcohol.

Also, don’t forget about the Spring Member/Guest in May. It looks to be another great event and hopefully the

weather stays as nice as it has been so far this year. This will be tied into a Comedy Night that evening. Mark

the date of May 19th on your calendar and enjoy a pre-summer event at the club. The cost of the Comedy

Night with passed appetizers and a sit down duet plate dinner is $55 per person. If you play in the Member/

Guest event that day, you and all of your guests will receive 20% off of the Comedy Night price.

There are many more events to come this year and I challenge everyone to try something new this season.

The entire food and beverage teams looks forward to seeing you at the club.

Cheers!

Tim

N EW! L VC BEER CLU B

The first ever LVC Beer Club starts April 27. We are very excited about this and look forward to seeing

everyone, especially those who suggested this idea. It would be great to have a full room in the Men’s Grill

our first evening as we welcome a representative from Troeg’s Brewing Company of Hershey, PA.

Troeg’s Brewery will be giving away free glasses.

There will be 4 drafts that rotate every 2 weeks, as well as 2 drafts that will be the mainstay for the club;

Spaten and Miller Lite. The 4 drafts that will be in rotation will include, but not be limited to, an IPA, Lager,

seasonal beer, as well as a Wild Card beer that will be fun and usually a blast from the past.

The only cost for the club is $20 cash payable to Jeremy. This is for cash prizes during the season for reg-

ulars of the beer club for different achievements. On Beer Club Nights only, the drafts will be $4.00 per

draft plus everyone will receive a sampler glass of each. There will also be food set up

to eat along with your beer festivities. Watch for a list at the end of April of the brewery

representatives who will be at each meeting.

Sign up for this club in the Men’s Grill and we look forward to seeing you on April 27th.

Start time for each meeting will be 6 p.m. Cheers!
