GREETINGS FROM YOUR PTA PRESIDENT
http://wcsoh.org/olc/teacher.aspx?s=3369
Welcome and welcome back to Longfellow! I hope you are ready for another wonderful year with
your student. Last year my daughter was a fifth grader at Longfellow and she made it her personnel
goal to try and attend all the activities offered throughout the year. I think she achieved her goal,
and at the end of the year she told me she had her best year ever! If you can't get to all of our
activities and events, I hope you will at least try a few of the many we have to choose from.
This year, COSI on Wheels, will be visiting our school!! Their program, “Launch into Space”, will go
well with our first ever “Conversations with NASA” which is a live video conference with our students
and scientists from NASA. On the Literary side, your PTA will be hosting an author visit and
workshop at our school. If reading is your child’s passion, they may enjoy our Junior Great Books.
This is a lunchtime book club for 3rd through 5th graders held in the winter months. Our Bank at
School program is a light introduction on the concept of savings and money matters. If your student
loves the ARTS, they may want to participate in the PTA Reflections contest or show their skills at
Longfellow’s Annual Talent Show in March.
We have plenty of social events planned for your child to enjoy with their classmates. This month
is one of my favorites, our Annual Fall Outing held at the Everal Barn. We have swim and skate
parties this winter and another favorite, Longfellow’s Annual Fun Fair, held in the Spring.
Also, November is PTA Healthy Lifestyles month, so be on the lookout for a health related theme
this month. I hope to see you at some of these events, and at the end of the year,
I hope your student can say they had their best year ever, too!

to do is remove the pop tab before you throw your can into the recycling bin.

Be Safe For Kids OHIO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION DIVISION OF COMMUNICATIONS - 1980 W. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43223
http://www.dot.state.oh.us Tips for Drivers in School Zones Beginning this week, nearly two million Ohio kids will go back to school. Half of the kids will ride the bus while the others will walk, ride bikes, drive, and get rides. It’s up to drivers to know the law and drive safely in school zones and around busses:
Stop for flashing red lights on school busses, regardless of which direction you’re going.
Once flashing lights go off and the bus begins moving -- or if the bus driver signals that it’s okay to pass -- continue your trip.
Obey posted speed limits. Drivers should also be aware of pedestrians:
Keep an eye on kids gathered at bus stops.
Watch for kids who might dart across the street to catch a bus or a ride.
Watch out for kids walking alongside of a road, especially if there are no sidewalks.
Make eye contact with pedestrians before turning in front of them. Watch out for kids on bicycles:
Bicyclists ride in the same direction as traffic, so drivers should stay alert and be aware of cyclists on the side of the road.
Pass with care. Drivers should maintain a three-foot clearance when passing a bicycle.

PARENT COUNCIL NEWS
First, let me introduce myself and explain my position on the Longfellow PTA Board.
My name is Linda George, and I have a 4th and 1st grader at the school. As your
Westerville Parent Council, (WPC) Rep I feel it is my responsibility to
keep Longfellow families informed on different events going on around the district.
I also like to share with the District your questions and opinions. Therefore, I have an
envelope hanging on the PTA board (outside of the 1st grade classroom) with Q & A
forms that I will forward to the district at my monthly meeting. At the following months
meeting, the district will give their responses.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email: [email protected]
Longfellow has been approved to participate in the Kurtz Cares program!
We have an opportunity to earn money for our organization for every retail purchase made at any Kurtz Bros location. All
anyone needs to do is mention our organization's name and account number and say they would like Kurtz Cares to support
our group at the time of purchase. That’s it!
Every three months Kurtz Bros will total all the sales and donate 10% of the proceeds to our organization. Participation is
not only limited to our group's members -- anyone can mention our name and account number and we'll receive 10% of
their retail purchase total as a donation to help support our non-profit efforts.
Kurtz has generously donated 16 yards of mulch to the Longfellow PTA each of the last 2 years.
They are located on St Rt 3 just south of 270.
